  • C5 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY™ 1985 INSULATED VIZ JACKET Review - Why It’s Great, But Why I regret Buying This One
    In this video, I’m going to look at the Gore Shakedry Jacket. I’ll tell you what’s great about it……. And why I sort of regret choosing this particular one.
    As I’ve said in previous videos, I cycle throughout winter, in some pretty harsh locations. I cycle the Dales, The Lakes, The Peaks….. So, I need some pretty good kit.

    @8:08 - Its called 1985 because - In 1985 , 3 engineers working in Germany for a fabric company called gore tex. They went cycling and realised that the industry at the time didnt have any waterproof, breathable, durable cycling jackets. so they created the first Gore Tex cycling jackets.

      Hi @@BrianHealy666, I've yet to find a 100% waterproof jacket that is also as breathable as normal fabric. For me, the best solution is a high quality winter jacket combined with an unlined Shakedry. However........ GORE-TEX is discontinuing the Shakedry fabric, and is replacing it with GORE-TEX ePE..... Interesting times!!!

    I agree the unlined jacket is more versatile you can always add another layer when its cold it gives you more options. Surely the jacket is designed to roll up into its own rear pocket, turn the pocket inside out then feed the jacket into it, I have several jackets that do that.

    Hi Jon I have the single layer jacket and it work really well even when the temps go up until the point it gets taken off and stuffed in a back pocket. My rides often start early morning with a long downhill ( yes that means a lot of climbing later in the day to get home) so the jacket has proved invaluable keeping out the wind and rain. I think the problem with the insulated jacket is like having a layer of blotting paper between you and the outside world. Whiffy kit is not nice. hi, I was reading that the Shakedry fabric had some resistance and therefore durability problems, and I read that there have been variations in the fabric on some manufacturers. Is this true or do all gore-tex Shakedry jackets have the exact same fabric?

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  Рік тому +1

      Hi @Alsteoaa,
      Yes, the Shakedry fabric is fragile. I have two Shakedry jackets, and both have small damage. One was caused by a thorn, the other was caught on the back of a chair. The fabric is very thin, and is therefore vulnerable.
      Yes, the industry is now seeing variants of this fabric. My understanding is that Castelli will be releasing their own version of Shakedry that performs in the same way.
      It’s also worth noting that GORE-TEX is discontinuing the Shakedry fabric for ‘Green’ reasons, and is replacing it with GORE-TEX ePE. We will have to wait and see if it performs as well.

      Hi dsonyay,
      Haha..... made me chuckle to myself!!
      I've got the unlined version too now, and it is a lot better, still a bit 'smelly' though! The answer is to ride with it undone until you have to do it up. I was thinking of doing a review on that one too, but as they're discontinuing it, I'm not sure if it's worth it.

    • @dsonyay
      @dsonyay Рік тому

      All good. Actually.. I think the number has to do with the weight of the fabric (weave density?).
      The lined version is for when you wake up and the rain is already coming down and you know it won’t stop til after the ride. It’s really for the worst conditions. I think you mentioned it too.. but yeah the unlined version is the one to pack and carry along.
      I’ll be honest,, in south Louisiana we have soooo many no rain days it’s easy to skip the really bad days. Very easy to make up the miles later. Many times the rain is so short lived I just wait it out or delay start times. I can ride every day too, because I’m now retired. :)
      My friend lives In Seattle Washington.. his rain days are nearly the same as yours. I’m very spoiled…. We have very mild winters, and nowhere near the rain.

    I hope you don't mind me asking but I could really use some advice. My husband is an eager cyclist and almost grabs every opportunity to ride his bike. However, he has struggled to find the right clothing for cycling in the winter and has now spent quite an amount on clothing that doesn't really work - he is, more or less, going crazy that he cannot ridehis bike in the winter (we live in Denmark and get lots of rain autumn and winter) I would really like to get him something which can help him ride his bike more during the winter and I would like to ask what you can recommend. Both jacket (which he can put in a small bag, like you showed, should it get too hot) and "trousers" (don't know the English word for that), and gloves - basically a good winter kit which does not cost a huge amount of money. Thank you so much in advance, kind regards Malene

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi Malene,
      Glad to help. First of all, when buying clothes for a cyclist, it’s important to remember that a lot of brands sizing is very small. I take a size 38 inch (96cm) jacket, but in most cycling jackets, I’m an extra large. So, worth remembering this.
      Jacket - 100% waterproof jackets aren’t very breathable, so it’s best to have a heavy warm winter jacket, these are known as a ‘Softshell’ jacket and then a thin waterproof rain cape to go over the top of it. The Castelli Alpha RoS is a high quality warm softshell jacket. It will keep him warm, and is shower proof. However, it’s not 100% waterproof. If it rains for long periods, it’ll get through. I’ve done a video on the Castelli Alpha RoR, it’s here:
      ua-cam.com/video/R-8w-EUslJw/v-deo.html
      Adding a rain cape to go over the top of a winter jacket is a good idea. The ones that pack down to nothing are known as ‘Packable’ or ‘Stuffable’. The unlined version of the GORE Shakedry would be a good choice, as it’s 100% waterproof. They too come up small, and you also need to remember that you’re putting it over a thick jacket, so you really need to size up. There is nothing wrong with big and baggy in the winter, as it traps air, so keeps you warm. Also, the more waterproof, the less breathable, so baggy is better in this case. I discuss the unlined version of the GORE Shakedry in this winter kit video:
      ua-cam.com/video/yDoIA-IdN78/v-deo.html
      100% waterproof packable jackets like the Shakedry cost an absolute fortune though, so you may want to look at brands like Altura, or Endura. Not as waterproof, but still very good, and a lot cheaper!!
      Trousers - The English word is tights!! What you need here is warm, not waterproof. Waterproof is hot and sweaty. A high quality fabric will expel the sweat, this is known a ‘Wicking’. My personal choice for winter tights is the Assos MILLE GT. I discuss the Assos tights in the above winter kit video. Another brand worth looking at is Lusso.
      Gloves - Spatz is the brand I’d suggest you look at. I use the Spatz THRMOZ Deep Winter Gloves. They are warm and water resistant….. further testing shows they’re not waterproof though. I’ve done a separate video on them here: ua-cam.com/video/Hb5QR-5xCrc/v-deo.html And you’ll also see them in my winter kit video. Spatz also do a waterproof glove, but I’ve not tried it. You’ll find them on their website: www.spatzwear.com I also hear regular good reports on Assos winter gloves.
      I hope this helps, Malene, and good luck with your kit search.

    On the other hand, when Castelli proudly proclaims that their $250-300 RoS jackets have absolutely *no* lining at all, one wonders whether a thin sheet of Goretex is really such a good deal after all. 🤨

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  Рік тому +1

      Hi Victor,
      I think the Alpha RoS does a great job of keeping you warm, whilst at the same time trying to retain some of that ‘race-fit’ that so many riders chase. I do however feel that it falls short in the waterproof department. I feel that a 100% waterproof warm/lined jacket can sometimes be an unpleasant garment to wear. For me, the Alpha RoS combined with an unlined Shakedry is the perfect combination for unpredictable, changing conditions.

They all smell of sweat after just one run and that's with me having a shower the night before. I also have a Marino wool top with long sleeves and that one smells as fresh after a 5km run as before (so I know the problem isn't my sweat). It's the fabric.
    They should have used Marino wool for the lining of that jacket.

      Anyway, back to your question. The unlined Shakedry would be an ideal jacket to keep you dry whilst still being packable. I’ll be honest, the fabric is not that breathable. If I’m riding hard and it’s done all the way up, the sweat doesn’t escape. However, the unlined version doesn’t keep you too warm, and when undone a little, it flaps around in the wind, all of this does help to keep it dryer inside when compared to the lined version.
      Thanks for watching,
      Jon

      Jon, thanks for your comments about the breathability of the unlined Shakedry jacket. That kind of confirms my suspicions. If it is raining and 100% humidity, the air is saturated and there's nowhere for the sweat to go. Someone would be getting sweaty even without the jacket on. When used as a windbreaker, a GoreTex jacket (especially Shakedry) will be more breathable than a basic coated nylon jacket, but in the rain, the breathability of any jacket is limited.

      Hi Louui ,
      I went for an EU Large (US L, Asia XL). To put that into perspective, I’m a Large in Castelli, wear a size 38 jacket, am 180cm tall and weigh in at roughly 78kg. Hope that helps.
      Thanks for watching.

    Anybody has the same measures?

      I’m 180cm and weigh 78Kg. I’m wearing a large. The arms are thin…. I have thin arms, but it can be tight…. If you have muscular arms, be careful.

    I've got more Castelli and Sportful gear than I can shake a stick at, but one jacket I won't buy is Shakedry! Can't say I've ever felt the need for one, whilst wearing Gabba, Perfetto and Alpha. I've got 2 shells, a very unique Castelli Gore Windstopper and an Endura Xtract. In fact the Endura is fantastic, it really takes a pounding from the rain!
    The DWR coating on the Gabba/Perfetto and Fiandre jackets is so good, I rarely feel the need for a Shakedry! For anybody wishing to own one, I suggest you buy one pretty soon as production is ceasing...✌️
    Gore Infinium 205, 203 and 150 are king!

      Hi GravelTramp,
      You make some good points.
      I find my DWR Castelli kit to be pretty good in damp and light shower conditions, but if I get caught out in a heavy downpour, or I’m riding in the rain for hours on end, then they fail me. Also, DWR needs to be regularly heat treated in order to ‘resuscitate’ its affectiveness. A ShakeDry never needs reviving, and will never let the water through.
      However, saying that, the ShakeDry has its downsides too. It’s really a summer ‘Race’ cape, and I struggle to get it over something like an Alpha RoS. Also, I don’t care what the blurb claims, it’s not breathable, I have two variants, and neither breath.
      In the winter, I wear a RoS and pack an old baggy cape. In the spring, it’s a Gabba and the Shakedry.
      Yes, it’ll be interesting to see how the Gore's new ePE membrane performs in comparison.
      Thanks for watching.

      It Does breath better than anything else, but if you overdress yeah you will sweat a lot anyway.
      Shakedry is so effective at cutting the wind/water that you don't need much underneath most of the time (for fall, only a good baselayer).
      I'm talking about the non liner version of course.
