You know, I simply stumbled upon this and it really is very good indeed! What an atmospheric lace, and you have a gem in Stuart. A supremely happy man working in a magnificent environment and doing a truly worthwhile job. Thank you all,
I chuckled when Stuart called Jim 'Muck'.....that's a proper Lincoln expression ie a shortened version of mucker or mate. Excellent video and I'm off up the tower today for the first time after living in the city for half a century!
Little Stuart ,what a guy, the politicians in this country want to take a leaf out of his book ,if they did their jobs properly like he does ,this country would be in a better shape, well done stu, credit to you for looking after this magnificent masterpiece.
Wonderful documentary! When I was a kid, I got a book for Christmas called The Children's Guide to Architecture and the façade of Lincoln Cathedral was one of the pictures on the cover so I had wanted to see it since I was about 10 years old. My wish came true in 2010 when my friend and I went there in December on a not at all well-planned visit. Our trip coincided with the worst winter storm in years which ended up being lucky for us because we hadn't even booked a hotel! The weather caused the Christmas Market to be canceled at the last minute and we ended up having the Cathedral and the city pretty much to ourselves. I wouldn't give anything for that trip! I bet Stuart has some vivid memories of that storm too!!
Hey Stephen, Thank you. Wow! Your trip sounds memorable and all thew more magical for the winter storm. Shame about the Christmas market cancelation but maybe you'll see it on a return visit...it really is very good. I bet if you asked Stuart, he would remember it.
Wonderful! I used to work in the Minster in the days when the Domus Supervisor was a mutton-chopped chap called Gordon. In those days, "young" Mr Boyfield was known as "Little Stuart"
A majestosa Catedral de Lincoln. Muito bonita o exterior e também o interior da Catedral. E o trabalho desse homem é muito bom. A visão que se tem lá de cima da torre é simplesmente linda e o céu estava lindo nesse dia parabéns.
Love Lincoln ❤️ Nice to see the Cathedral from the perspective of the maintenance man “Domus Supervisor “. Even Mr Boyfield’s job title is majestic! Super! And he has a gargoyle/ grotesque xxx
Yes, Stuart's gargoyle is amazing. I went up onto the roof to film those shots. It's a pretty decent size and is a true work of art in itself. Stuart is rightly proud of it.
Thank you Shaun. It is an amazing cathedral and you're right, Stuart is a really great chap and if you ever visit, you will very likely see him working in and around the cathedral. Thanks again.
I visited this magnificent cathedral in 1991 when I travelled around England and Wales by car. This was when you could go by ferry from Gothenburg to Harwich, those where the days!
Would we ever build such a structure again the builders and planners of Centuries ago where so skilled. Add those skills to the skills needed to build sea faring ships right up to modern computers, rockets we are such a clever species.
I live nearby and visit the cathedral often. What I wouldn't do to have my own grotesque. Incredibly jealous. I will be looking out for it when I am next there.
eddyk If you're stood at the front of the Cathedral, head out on the right hand side and about half way down (and back a bit) you'll find Stuart's grotesque. It is very cool.
I found it fascinating during the opening of the video how Stuart operates like clockwork while winding the clocks. He probably knows what time of day it is without even looking at his watch just by judging from the sounds of foot traffic.I was happy that we got a look into the bell tower.I’m a journeyman electrician by trade so i identified with many of the tasks involved. The fire alarm system, the most important had me at the edge of my chair...All good. Very Interesting about the gargoyles. Those are the nicest looking gargoyles I’ve ever seen, far from the grotesque.Truly a humbling job.

I'm not sure about the seating capacity. The cathedral does install more seats into the cathedral for special occasions, especially during the Christmas period.

Thanks for your comments Hamshaw. Stuart is a gem and the Cathedral is well worth a visit. They run some great tours of the place too!
Met this guy today, a really nice fella.
Next time i pay a visit I'll be keeping an eye out for Stu and his amazing grotesque!
As a Lincoln lass born and bred, trained at LCH now living in Australia that was a beautiful programme. Many, many thanks.

I love that Stuart has his own grotesque on the cathedral. It makes you look at those carved faces in new light, don’t you think?
Beautiful cathedral a magnificent gothic wonder
The best video of this Cathedral I have seen. Made by someone who was worked there for 37 years!

What a charming presenter and informative video.
Serendipity at its best. What an excellent doco.
I can see the Cathedral when I clock out of work and hear the chimes as I walk to the car park.
a very privileged job and satisfying compared to many so called jobs these days lucky man
Absolutely right Sam. Stuart is such a happy chap. He loves the job he does.
I was born in a house on Greetwell Gate at 8.10 pm so the first external noise to reach my ears would have been the bells ringing the quarter hour.
I remember as a child we used to run up and down those tower steps. This in 1940s and 1950s.
What a fascinating and informative video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Watching a guy wind clocks and changing rubbish bins. Fascinating.

You should have a mini cherry picker for the high work. May be less cumberson than that large metal unit.🤔🤔💓💓
He seems like one of those "one kinds" of supervisors lol
What is the seating capacity for the main church because it seems as big as the RAH?

The church is supposed to open to everyone. But £9.50. This means poor people can't afford to go in.
You don't have to pay, they just ask if you would.
How else do you think they maintain the building?.

Wow, a lie within the first two minutes. This building was NEVER the tallest building in the world.
Yes it WAS the tallest building in the world. FACT. Google it...this fact is everywhere.
LOL
It beat the great pyramid of giza, as the tallest building in the world until it's main tower toppled in an earthquake in the 1200s.
