Solid Rock's re-release program continues to pick up steam as this package gathers together three of the rarest ever Larry Norman LPs (the original version of "Street Level", "Letter Of The Law" and "Labor Of Love") and adds in one partially released project (side one of 'Rough Mix 3' was put out as the 'Barking At The Ants' EP in the early '80s). The price might seem high for a double CD which is probably aimed at collectors rather than selective admirers but it still works out cheaper than buying the bootleg CDRs which prompted this release, and you get better sound quality, a 12 page booklet written by Larry, and bonus tracks. All in all there 42 tracks here and only two have appeared on CD before, some have never been released anywhere before. "Street Level" is vintage Norman. Side one features a poem and three songs from a solo concert in 1969, while the five other tracks are studio demos from 1970 including an impressive pop song "Sigrid Jane" cut by Larry and Ray Charles' band. "Rough Mix 3" works quite well too. This is a collection of recordings from 1978 to 1985 and features enjoyable live versions of "Why Can't You Be Good" and "A Note From Mr. God" alongside an early version of "The Tune", a cover of Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman", and a version of "More Than A Dream" which has Larry and his Young Lions cohorts sounding a bit like Adam And The Ants. Quite a mix! Some of the other material leans towards praise and worship. The other two albums concentrate mostly on Tom Howard covers with a few short original instrumental compositions thrown in. It's easy to see why they were never released properly and why they gathered bad reviews when they are placed alongside Norman's best work. That said, there are four or five of the songs and their performances from these two poorer albums riveting. The stripped down versions of "Where His Soul Touches Down" and "Watch The Master Make It Right" will almost certainly hit the mark with fans of Norman's own ballads like "The Outlaw" and "I Hope I'll See You In Heaven". The two bonus tracks are absolute gems. The short demo of "Love On Haight Street" from the late '60s and the studio recording of "A Woman Not A Maid" from the unreleased 'Rough Mix 2' album, it's probably fair to say that over these two CDs you can find Larry close to his best and worst, but if you are a big fan or a collector you'll probably enjoy the collection.

The Believers shouldn't be convicted, they should already be doing these things. The Church should be convicted, the ones who do nothing.

Larry wrote this so long ago, and it has happened and is happening to so many, so often, but it's much worse than when Larry sang about it, and it will get worse according to the Scriptures. Another prophetic truth from Larry.
i was introduced to Larry Norman by our youth leader ad church, bought his albums, listened to his music all through high school, heard him in concert (with Randy Stonehill). Even saw him in concert again in San Jose in 1990. Very familiar with "The Great American Novel" and "Readers' Digest". But i just heard *this* song for the first time a couple of years ago. (Oh well -- at least he wasn't talking to Birch! ;) )
Like King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" -- Larry addressed this song directly to the Church. "Let's stop marching for peace and start marching for Jesus, and peace will take care of itself."
This truly is one of Larry's most compelling songs. The message is chilling.

I saw him in concert about 6 times in the 80s and 90s when I was a Christian and one last time in 2001 as an agnostic/atheist. He was an exceptional performer, very intelligent, not afraid to speak the truth as he saw it regardless of the consequences.
I can easily set aside his professional and personal failures, especially as they did not affect me personally - and in any case, most stones are best left un-thrown. He remains one of the only influences left in my life that I could still call spiritual. He was too Christian for the contemporary scene (being anti-abortion, and singing about Jesus and the rapture) but not religious enough for the Christian scene (worldly themes, equivocal lyrics, no fan of organised religion, rumours even then) and maybe that was one reason I liked him so much - not his views which i disagreed with frequently, but just that he was an outsider, a complicated, but clever antagonist - warning us of our jeopardy. The hit job video done on him just made me more fascinated by him. Was he really a narcissist? Possibly. But he was part performer and part evangelist and far better at both than his peers - and in any case he is no longer here to defend himself. His concerts and tapes were pretty cheap and the only interval collection i ever experienced was in the mid 90s when he was in and out of hospital. He clearly had significant heart disease and it took him at 60 - he was hardly faking it. Was I ripped off? No I don’t think so. I lost far more money and time to churches and respectable religious endeavours. For me, seeing him in concert was like standing before a great work of art or a great landscape, he made me think about the spiritual realm (and the world’s potential end) in a way I almost never got from church or organised religion. He was good with a band, but always best with his Spanish guitar, and his stories, arpeggio, falsetto, humour, piercing stare, prophecy, and artistry remains with me. 20 years on from the last time I saw him there are just these YT videos, for which I am grateful. Someone should make a proper film about him, it can say what it likes about his private life or his motives, as long as it captures what his concerts were actually like. He was one of the greats, dismissed, rejected, condemned and now at risk of being forgotten, but truly special, perplexing and profound. I met him only once when he signed something for me, he was very sweet and polite. I hope he found peace.

When this song came out I the 70’s it seemed so unbelievable. Now 45 plus years later it has become realistic.
I agree completely, i looked for this on youtube just in the chance that I might find it wanted to play it for my wife as we are noticing the 'signs of the times' and that our freedoms may not be taken for granted! Thank you so much for putting Larry Norman's music on the net. I had never heard of him but found a reference to him in a book I am reading, "Jesus Revolution." I searched for his music and found all that Greg has put on. I have been listening to every song I can find since Sunday (off & on). Yes, come Lord Jesus.

Fast forward to 2017... it is happening.
It started long, long before 2017. I saw everything start to change in 1960. You can read about it on the web, I'm sure. Please take the time to do so. Find out why so many children grow up without a father in the house (or a father figure in their lives). "Free Love." Yeah, that's turned out really well. I had a Home Health Aide who had eight (8) children with eight differenet dads (somewhere), & "mom" was no mother to them. She only wanted the extra money the government gives for each child you have, and she was getting over $1,000.month for food (beside a welfare check), only had to work 20 hours a week, & the government paid for child care (and clothing, formula, etc.).
The elderly and disabled live in subsidized housing, and the gov takes 1/3 of whatever they get from SSI or Social Security, and they get $15.00/month for food. Try living on that! They work all their lives, and now they are old, and the SS is based on what they made in the 50's, 60's, etc., so they live on under $10,000/year BEFORE their rent is taken out. Shameful!

My experience is that if you are not a evangelical Christian and a republican, which I am not, many will declare you something less than Christian. When one mixes their religion with politics then your politics becomes your religion. That is the threat to Christianity, at least where I live.

Larry was not part of the Jerry Falwell revolution that brought evangelicals into the Repubs. He was pretty much against it. He always sang about not only Jesus but racial injustice, the poor, the institutionalized church being out of touch, the environment etc before it was cool to do so.

Listen to Walter Martin debate a Freemason to start, and then get deeper into it, and learn about the symbols, the degrees and what their end goal is. (Also, why you have to be a Freemason before you can be a Shriner.)
