I feel so bad for Pepa. When she says “A thunder will lead to a drizzle, and a drizzle will lead to a sprinkle!” It really shows you the amount of pressure shes under. Like a sprinkle isn’t even that much but shes freaking out abt it like shes abt to cause the next hurricane
It's honestly sad that her powers trap her in a vicious cycle of "if I panic, then I'll make bad weather, which leads to more panic as I try to calm myself, which leads to more bad weather, etc."...tbh her powers look cool, but they'd be absolutely nightmarish to live with. Abuela was 100% living vicariously through Isabella. She looks the most like a young Abuela, and she's being married to Mariano who looks a lot like Abuelo Pedro. Abuela's forcing Isabela to live the "perfect" life she wishes she could have lived had she not lost her home.
There is obvious color coding in the family too. Like pepe and Felix's side are yellows and oranges, and julieta and Augustine's sides are blue and purple. Notably except for Isabella who wears pink. Which is a younger brighter version of abuela wearing red. I think they were color coding Isabella more in line with abuela. Also at the end of the movie when Isabella is allowed to be messy she wears blue
I think the girl in one of Bruno’s visions looks like Isabella too, which caused Mirabel to attempt to fix the miracle by “talking it out” and “hugging,” but the girl was revealed to be Abuela at the end, so Isabella does look like her
And and also in the picture that all of the children have with Abuela when they get their gift, Abuela only smiles with Isabella, everyone else she has a serious face/is frowning

To be fair Pepa and Julieta were about 40 at the time, which is around the time many people stop having kids (also, there’s already a significant gap between Dolores and Camillo iirc, so the gap between Antonio and Camillo isn’t all that surprising for Pepa’s side of the family)
But also, imagine the impact of pregnancy hormones and emotions + potential post partum depression on Pepa... I'd probably take awhile between kids too!

The worst part is a lot of the things they ask of her are unnecessary like moving churches when they could just plan things better. Same with herding donkeys, if they kept a better eye out for their donkeys instead of relying on Luisa.
Bruno went ten years without his sisters, any hugs, any birthdays, without his nieces and nephews, practically without a life~ all because of a stupid gift that made everyone hate him
rather, not because of the gift, but the "opinions" of others about his ability to warn. Everything could have turned out differently if people had listened to his observations of others (and not blamed for the truth about the "rain", the death of a fish, that someone would gain weight and someone would go bald). If for years there were no such problems in a family that hid its problems, sacrificed something instead of solving everything together. Moreover, not to push Bruno away, what will happen gives others the opportunity to prepare. And whether it's good or not depends on how people look at it. Because any experience is useful in its own way for further growth.
exactly, and in the end, he never really got a proper apology. just a hug and he was accepted back which is still messed up. how come they had to give him permission to come back into the family? he missed 10 years of his life living in isolation
@@snickersbar4995I think you misunderstood that part of the movie. Sometimes, a hug is as good as a verbal apology, and really, Bruno seemed to not demand anything from his family at that point and only wanted to come back to them.
That line plus her part in We Don't Talk About Bruno makes it seem like she really wants to tell someone, but she's too scared to bring up Bruno so she's just trying to drop hints.
In that same song when she says that Bruno told her that her love would be betrothed to another, and then Isabela cuts her off to talk to Mirabel, you can hear her saying in the background that sometimes she still hears Bruno, but it's implied that she thinks she is just imagining it.

Dolores and Peppa must've been the happiest ones in the family when the magic was gone. One is bombarded with loud sounds 24/7 and the other can't properly process her emotions without a rain cloud or high winds forming around her. I wouldn't be so eager to get my powers back if I couldn't control them.

I think the only apology that was warranted from him was the one to Pepa for her wedding day. It wasn't technically his fault, but his comment did cause some undue stress for her on a very special day. Aside from that, everyone else owes him an apology.
The only apology he kind of gets is finally getting a hug from his mother after 45 freaking years... But unfortunately this is a big part of Colombian and a lot of more collectivist cultures. The person who's seen as a f****up has to be the first one to apologize. I wish in the rebuilding of the house thing we could have gotten a couple of short pieces with his sister's apologizing for not standing up for him. Poor Bruno. I had the thought recently that the reason Dolores keeps her hair up the way she does could be because the sound of her hair constantly rustling right next to her ears would drive her insane. If true it just goes to show how their gifts affect them on even the smallest of levels, and often for the worst
@@redguyslave409 for body based sounds, we always block those out automatically. thankfully, she wouldn't be able to hear them, I don't think. there's literally a disorder in which people with a normal level of hearing end up hearing their body sounds. eyes blinking, heart beating, bones and muscles moving, skin shifting. like, that's a real thing. so Dolores would hopefully be automatically blocking those sounds out. it's just everything else bombarding her.

During the whole movie, we can see Dolores in what seems like always a horrible mood because of all the sounds shes hearing. Julietta is always wearing an apron and look at those gray hairs, the girl is constantly cooking. And did she the type of injuries those people had. It’s like her gift gives people free reign to do reckless shit.
Personally, I believe that the reason Pepa tries to frantically calm herself down literally all the time is because her gift is like Bruno's - it doesn't help the family. It only causes chaos. So she's probably scared that Abuela will treat her the way she treated Bruno, and that she'll be cast out just because of the chaotic gift she was given. That's, from my point of view, the reason Felix and Camilo always try to like calm her down and help her conceal her clouds - her feelings, from Abuela.
Actually a very good explanation of her current mental health and I really hope -if there’s is an extension of Encanto or another movie- that we get to see a more of Pepa‘s side of the family.
Mirabel explains that Pepa’s abilities help with the crops and when she is in a good mood the days are sunny and warm and if she is worried at least the village doesn’t have to worry about droughts. The problem is that she’s expected to keep a sunny mood most of the time and that’s impossible for anyone who’s not a sociopath.

My theory is that all of their "powers" are manifestations of their generational trauma. Julieta wishes that there had been some way Abuela could have healed Abuelo, Bruno thought, "If only Abuela and Abuelo had known those bad people were coming, maybe they could have done something to stop it", Pepa just straight-up has anxiety, Isabella felt the need to be perfect to cheer up her unstable family members, Luisa feels the need to be strong to hold the family together, Dolores became hyper-aware of every sound because when you have an emotionally unstable parent noticing a door or cabinet shut just a little too loudly is a survival tactic, Camilo is a trickster and joker at heart but his fear that this doesn't make him a useful family member made him wish he could be "someone else." Antonio is literally the only family member whose power has nothing to do with generational trauma... why? Because it was Mirabel that spoke to him before his door ceremony--- not Abuela. Mirabel told him it was totally okay to be himself no matter what. What did Abuela tell Mirabel before her ceremony? She retold their most traumatic family memory. It's fair to assume that she told every family member this horrible traumatic memory before every door ceremony. The fact that Mirabel was the one to break this cycle shows that Casita chose the right person to become the new family Matriarch. This also explains why Casita didn't give Mirabel her own room. Casita wanted Mirabel to be there for future family members before their door ceremonies. Been kinda wanting to make a UA-cam video to explore this in-depth.
Thoughts: Pepa's gift is actually quite unfortunate because not only is she constantly drenched, but she's getting others rained or snowed on. Her weather is also an obvious disruption to the goings-on of those around her, such as having wind blowing things around. Not only this, but she can't even seem to have an emotion without everyone knowing how she feels. She can't lie, be sad, angry, or even nervous privately. Delores is indeed probably losing her mind, because she doesn't seem to be able to turn off her super hearing. She can hear EVERYTHING going on in a wide radius, and I'm sure the sound of so many people talking, eating, playing music, going to the bathroom, doing...other things...is absolutely maddening. Isabella was, to put it crudely, almost pressured into becoming a brood mare to bring forth another generation to endure the same pressures as the rest of the family. Not to mention the expectation that everything she did and said should be perfect at all times, right down to symmetrical flowers.
I honestly believe that Isabela couldn’t stand Mariano and would love nothing more but to punch him in the face. The plants proved that not once, but twice. 😂

I don't think Isabela HATES Mariano. After all he is a kind, handsome, man who loves his family and makes his mother proud. She just doesn't love him. It seems to me like she barley even knows him, and the families are just setting up an arranged marriage. Of course, she is still unhappy and doesn't want to marry him. Everything worked out in the end though. Mariano ends up with Delores, so he still joins the family Madrigal. And Isabela is now free to explore her power, find herself, and maybe find love on her own terms if she chooses to eventually marry.
@@pixywings Even with the originally planned idea of her having a lover, I doubt she would hate Mariano. If there was someone to blame, it wouldn't be him, but Abuela who is presurring her into marrying him. Though, depending on how good she knows Dolores' hearing to be, she may have been upset that her cousin never blew up the whole "Isabella already loves someone else" ticking bomb, as I am sure, that even if Abuela may not have approved (at first) since she was living by proxy through Isabella, her parents and Mariano would have all not only understood she felt pressured by Abuela, hence why she didn't say anything, and Mariano would not force someone who loves another to be with him, as he is a good person (and I consider he would understand because he wants to make his mother proud... hell, it could be interesting to even hear him admit, that maybe, he too was kinda doing it because he wanted to make his mother proud).
Also the fact that during the proposal scene abuela tells Luisa to get the piano not allowing her a moment to eat her meal and be with the family, she IMMEDIATELY gets up even though she’s eating
Luisa is a servant to the villagers she’s expected by everyone to serve them when they need her because that’s how Alma presents Luisa to them and they just think she’s always willing to help them out whenever they call.
Yeah, that how grandma is. I also experience this *a lot* when I'm just sitting and eating my meal. So we have family member coming, and my grandma cooking outside making sambal or something(i don't remember) and she like: RATNA CAN YOU GET THE SALT! and me who just have one bite on the rendang just like: 😑 So i take the salt, and give it to her, then i sit down and eat, and not long after that she call me again. grandma: RATNA I FORGET ABOUT THE SUGAR CAN YOU TAKE IT AND BRING IT HERE! and i was just like: 🥤🤦🏻♀ She call me just when i just want to drink my TEA and i even not half done eating yet. So i take the sugar, i take the brown sugar, the onions, garlic, and all that thing. I take it ALL outside and because it to many i literally hug them. And my mom who see me pass by just like: 😂 This happen when i was 12/13. So after that whenever my grandma ask me for salt or sugar or whatever i bring all of the ingredients. I think it's because I'm the tallest(and literally the strongest girl/woman in our family after my mother. *that why i can relate to Luisa*), there's my uncle but he's a man, and can only make indomie so yeah. Well, at least with helping my grandma my cooking start to taste like her, so i guess is a win for me 😋 i can't wait for this Raya tho I want to learn my grandma special beef this time.
I really thought it waa gonna be another Maleficent type of Disney movie until she found Bruno. I couldn't even finish watching the miracle song because it was so painful. How hasn't she gone insane is beyond me. On that note the magic was a dick for letting her suffer all that just to teach them a lesson. Yes they're all happy in the end but irl those years of traumatizing memories wouldn't just go away that easily.
Yeah....you summed up every reason I personally hated the grandma. Though I think many people miss something with Pepe; She's litterally forced to be happy because how her emotions affect the weather. That includes the world around her. So her mood could literally be the difference between a bountiful harvest and a drought or famine
Avoiding a drought or Famine requires her to not be happy sometimes, though. Which means that Abuela's insistence on perfection has potentially gotten people killed.

The way Isabella immediately shrinks into herself when Abuela shows up, physically becoming smaller. During the whole movie her movements were small and confined, even while dancing her arms never went too far out. During her song she's flinging herself every which way and expressing so much. But when Abuela shows up and starts yelling she holds her arms to her sides and slouches a bit.

I like to think that when the miracle was reignited it was better than before, Dolores could control if she wanted super hearing or not, Pepa's power wasn't as tied to her emotions, so she would not just create a tropical storm if she saw a rat and the overall healthier environment of the family was able to make up for the rest of the shortcomings.
I like to think that too, I also believe that Pepa gained more control over her gift by not trying to suppress her emotions and having overall better mental health

Dolores is now at peace and her lovelife is now booming. Pepa now can control her powers because she is now free,she found a healthy way to manage her emotions. Camilo still the Camilo we know. Mirabel now found her worth to the family. Abuela realized that she became just hard to her family because she's just scared to lose the "miracle" that given to her,REMEMBER...She witness Infront of her wide eyes how her husband died.
What I just realized about this movie (I've watched it many times now lol) is that the gifts were supposed to be things that made them happy; things they enjoyed. They were like Abuelo Pedro's last gift to his family. He didn't want them to grow to resent them. For example, I get the feeling that Isabella loved plants and nature, just like Antonio loved animals, etc. At the end, when they got their gifts back, it was different; they felt they were allowed to enjoy their gifts as they would have wanted to enjoy them.

“Out of control” is also such a gross thing to say because like… in that context, it’s Isabela is out of ABUELA’s control. Abuela groomed her to be perfect and now that she’s taking 5 minutes to be herself, she’s “out of control”. She didn’t for one second think that maybe isabela would want to be in control of her own life, her own time, her own powers.
Theres a lyric in "What Else Can I Do" that I feel gets over looked a bunch. Isa sings "It just needed to be. And they'd let me be." I think that line really encompasses that she doesn't want to be the golden child. It's suffocating, and she just wants to be left ALONE.
Juliettas gift was actually damaging, because shes not gonna be around forever and every single person (child and adult) have become reliant on her to heal every cut they have. What are they gonna do when she dies? The adults of the town are damaging their children by teaching them to be reliant on one person when it comes to their health
I feel like if there is a series to go along with the movie, she should have a class about health and medicine that way when she's gone, the people will be able to fend for themselves when it come to their health.

Yeah but Mirabel is constantly left out from the family. Not being included in a family photo and no one caring, and being thought of as dead weight to the family. Alma and Isabela always wanted her to shut up, hide and do nothing related to the family because "she'll mess up things for the whole family" like they don't want her to be a part of them.
I feel like, in Dolores' case, the worst tragedy is that she is *trained* by Abuela to spill the beans constantly, as soon as she gets info/is asked to. Of all the Madrigals, she is with Isabela one of the very few that passively fight against her influence (interesting enough, they're the elder of their respective siblings) and keeps things to herself (Bruno being still there and working in the shadows to keep the house afloat)
We can't say if Dolores is TRAINED by Abuela, You're stating things without actual facts or evidence to back it up. Your uncle whom is always been seen as a bad-omen, your mom telling you that he ruined her wedding, and him basically telling you how the love of your life would be betrothed to someone else? I would be pretty weary and scared of him (stated at the beginning of her part of "We don't Talk about bruno"), and it seems like he actively makes the choice of staying in the walls so it's quite easy to get stay quiet and just give him some food through the cracks or something. But when it comes to the magic dying? YEAAAHHH That's a pretty BIG secret to hold onto, as not only could it devastate you and your family as you wouldn't know what to do without it, your whole community whom has been depending on your family and the magic would be devastated too. Bruno's case is weird as we don't entirely know why people fully accepted to not talk about Bruno, as Either it's because they know Abuela still loves Bruno and would be devastated if he was ever mentioned (Not really having a good coping mechanism to deal with her own trauma of the death of her Husband), AND While we do get the whole "He predicts the future" What can we say that he can't influence it in any bit? After all, his literal sister can control the WEATHER, so it makes sense why people would just assume he would make bad things than predict it. Also, Isabella literally stated that one of the reasons why she would act perfect is for Abuela to be happy, so I don't think that's passively fighting against Abuela's influence.

@@conejitorosada2326 I think the biggest indicator that Dolores has been "trained" to spill the beans on everything is Mirabel's reaction to her finding out about the vision. Which I believe was something like "She's gonna tell everyone." To me that's some pretty strong evidence saying that Dolores has been habitually revealing secrets to everyone. So I don't think it's unfounded to say she has been trained by Abuela to share everything she knows.
literally have a same uncle as felix and a same aunt as pepa she is capable of breaking the sound barrier and glass with screams by getting stressed over the smallest misunderstandings of the family but the uncle always deals with it somehow and loves her despite living with it everyday, a literal saint, one of my idols of a man
3:43 so for those who don't know, this is a saying that some families say to their kids when they get hurt (it's what my mom would say to me when I was little) so Bruno is basically saying it to the house since it's covered in cracks as if it got hurt.

I feel the most for Dolores... she was so happy without her gift, and was able to express her self loud and boldly. Then the gift came back... right back into sensory overload 😭
I hope she got some nice noise-canceling headgear (earmuffs, maybe? I bet Mirabel would totally make some nice ones if Dolores asked for the help) at the end of the film. Her gift seems absolutely exhausting.

i think for julietta its that elder sister syndrome. helping everyone but no one rly helped her. pepa clearly has lots of anxiety and is supposed to never express any negative emotion unless she wants to burden everyone else. she has to be constantly happy to a toxic point.
And Bruno as the youngest and the only male member of the family for how many years, had to deal with all the sh1t people talk about him, and I bet Abuela Alma probably told him to "get over it and man up"
Seriously I laughed out loud at the ending when it was like "the curse is back, nooo!" Goddammit, I feel bad for la Familia Madrigal. On the one hand I was happy their powers were back because it seemed really sad that they all lost their powers but at the same time yeah they were kinda making them miserable, huh? Well... hopefully they will learn to better handle their powers and not constantly worry about being perfect or controlling them? Fun Fact: When they restored their -gifts- curses, dolores is the only one on the door portrait that looks sad. She was so happy that she can finally get some peace and quiet 😭

Well, considering her power is most like caused by a family dynamic where she's literally had to use her ears and tip toe around not to upset anyone, I'd say she should be able to tune it down herself now there's no cause for it anymore.
It wasn't the magic making them miserable. It was just they were so pressured to being perfect and Abuela put so much on them. But when Isa was able to make her own flowers she was still happy with her magic. She just wanted to use it her own way. Same with Pepa. When she let herself let loose she could be happy with her powers. Plus I think everyone would have been sad if Casita remained a normal house cuz Casita had a personality too.
Agree with everything, including Casita getting its own powers back. It played as much of a character in the film as any of the Madrigals! I also read somewhere that there's a theory that Abuelo Pedro's spirit (represented by butterflies) is the one that powers the Casita and watches over the family.. I could totally see that!! 🦋🏡
my theory is that casita is abuela's husband in spirit form. casita always makes sure the family is safe, especially mirabel since she has no magic. it seemed like casita knew how important mirabel was to the family. always letting mirabel know to hang in there. i love this movie so much :D
@@beeperbee I'd argue that Mirabel does have a gift, though. It's just not obvious like everyone else's. One thing you might notice is that many of the characters' clothes are a reflection of their powers. Dolores has little motifs that look like sound waves, Isabela's dress is very floral, Pepa has sun earrings and sunny waves on the collar of her yellow dress, Julietta has healing herbs embroidered all over her clothes, Camilo has chameleons on his poncho, Luisa has barbells on her skirt, Bruno has hourglasses on his poncho, even Antonio has animals on his clothes before he gets his ability to talk to animals. Mirabel is covered in butterflies. The candle has a very prominent butterfly on it. Mirabel is the living embodiment of the miracle, which is why it flickers and weakens along with every time Mirabel loses hope. This is also why she seems to be the only one who can communicate with casita on the level that she does, why her door "disappeared," and why casita came back to life when she turned the front door for the first time. She doesn't have a room because casita itself is her "room." The love and hope that Pedro had for Alma and his children is what led him to sacrifice himself for them and the power of that caused the miracle and allowed them to, well, fly free like butterflies. Mirabel's love and hope helps Luisa, Isabela, Bruno, and Abuela to see how they were trapped in fear and to free themselves to become happier, healthier people. It's subtle, but I think the signs are all there.
I think in some cases the magic does make them miserable, in case of doleras (I probably botched the spelling) she suffer from chronic sensory overload, Pepa has to suffer with getting soaked whenever she gets ticked off

When I tell you I cried watching this movie, I CRIED. It came out around the time I'd just lost my job and before I got my new one and I'd been having problems with my own family. Heck, that night I'd had a big fight with my mother who thought I wasn't trying hard enough. I decided to watch this movie at like 3 am early in January just to take my mind off the stress and I identified so hard with Mirabel that I cried at three points- first when Mirabel sang "Waiting On A Miracle", once when Mirabel and Abuela fought after Isabella's song, and once when Mirabel and Abuela had their conversation at the end of the movie. I was such a mess by the end of it I had to get my older sister on the phone and just talk to calm myself down and absolutely gush over the movie. I absolutely adore this movie, I will never not love it.
In Colombia it's apparently good luck to have rain on your wedding day, which is really interesting when it's such a negative symbol for Pepa. She's so worried about having any negativity that she can't see the good things and Felix has to ground her and show her what she's not seeing. Mad props to Felix and Augustin this whole movie though, they are the healthiest part of the whole family and I adore them.
What I think is that Alma told Pepa "You have to make sure that it's a good weather on your wedding day because the whole town will be there to see you get married". So that is how she became that nervous and made everything else happen when Bruno tried to cheer her up...

i just realised that their gifts are actually roles in family trauma. Isa is put under pressure of being perfect, Luisa is being taken advantage of, Pepa is told to bottle up her emotions, Camilo is having problems with his identity/is a forgotten middle child and Bruno is an outcast just because people don't understand his words and so on
And their gifts represent the steps needed to repair that trauma. They need to talk (Antonio), listen (Dolores), be open with their emotions (Pepa), be flexible and willing to change (Camilo), grow together (Isabela), heal each other (Julieta), lift each other up and lend each other their strengths (Luisa), and look forward to the future rather than dwell in the past (Bruno).
Also to add on to Ireki's point, Dolores is always on edge because of what she hears, Julietta is forced to be the main nurturer when the person who should fulfill that role is not, and Antonio turns to unconventional outlets to release his stress (first Mirabel then his animals).

Honestly, Camilo has no problems with identity, if you want to have some flaw in him, then say that he has a useless power for the village, it makes a thousand times more sense. Oh, and I think it's important to mention that Abuela is also part of this list, she just tried to make everyone useful because she thought it was the only way to honor her husband's sacrifice, she sacrifices herself, She hurt everyone by being hurt too, and although she is the antagonist for half of the movie until the "Oroguitas" part, she is still a victim of the war and the weight that is carry an entire village alone, and without a gift, of course

They probably wanted to build something else where the church is and thought the new location was more convenient. She was also asked to reroute the river, and she moved a bridge at the beginning. Now that I think about Luisa is probably constantly rearranging the town everytime someone’s location becomes inconvenient.

I feel so bad for Pepa and Dolorous, Pepa can't get a moment of peace because she's always stressed about her gift which in turn makes her even more stressed and Dolorous can hear literally EVERYTHING in a mile radius.
I feel bad for Dolores. She actually covers her ears duirng Antonio's gift receiving because it's so loud. It must be painful. My husband wondered if her magic room was soundproof so she could sleep. But from things she said in the movie I don't think so. Her and her mom got the worst gifts.
Her moms gift can be cool and useful if she learned how to properly control it, like she did at the end of the movie. Dolores is just fucked though. There are few benefits to being able to hear everything.
I used to think it'd be a cool "superpower" to have, then a friend told me about a time he and his dad had a quiet conversation in their kitchen, and his mom heard everything even though she was at the other end of the house -- because she was lying in her darkened bedroom suffering from a migraine. If that's the trade-off, there's no way in hell I'd want that power.
I love that this movie is about a dysfunctional family that actually loves each other very much. They just needed some therapy and better communication skills.
The "Imperfect" flower was actually the only white flower, and white represents purity. This makes it worse because she was basically symbolically pressuring her into losing her virginity to a person she doesn't particularly love solely for the family's reputation.
It was also a Daisy which are considered weeds in some places so it has the second symbolic meaning of Abuela literally weeding the thoughts/personality traits she doesn't like out of Isabela's head like a gardener.
To be fair, it seems Abuela didn't know that Isa wasn't in love with him. In her mind, she was just excited for them to start a new generation of family and missed the warning signs that Isa felt pressured into the relationship. Just like she missed the signs that everyone else was suffering because of her inability to look beyond their gifts.
Not just her virginity, but her whole life (chance of genuine love, individuality, etc) which is WAY more important than your virginity, and far more permanent.

@@Furienna definitely, but I think the whole marriage - trying to act in love, smiling constantly, waking up next to them, kissing goodnight, watching other people live the life you want around you EVERY DAY, knowing this is the life you are stuck in until you die.... Cumulatively, I think that is way worse than losing your virginity to someone you don't love. (Speaking as someone who still has nightmares about the guy I lost my V to. I was planning on waiting til marriage before him, and that was a huge part of my identity back then. My virginity is the LAST thing I think about now- it's just a story I might tell as a joke now to friends).
I love seeing the theories that Mirabel's gift _is_ the miracle, her undying support and love for her family despite their differences is what keeps the miracle alive.
Or that she was free of the burdens of the magic. I also like the theories that she was given the gift of empathy and understanding, and the gift of talking to Casita, since she seems to be the only one who does that.
There was a theory that ever since Mirabel's ceremony, the house started cracking more, because she felt she wasn't accepted anymore ever since the ceremony (she tried finding ways to see what her miracle was, and already gave up during the events of the movie). Alma never hugged Mirabel ever since she was 5.
one of the theories i’ve seen which i subscribe to is that while she doesnt have a magical gift, her gift is the miracle itself. like how Abuela has no magical gift but is kinda the cae taker of the candle and the leader of the family. the woman is getting on in years and probs doesnt have long left and the house chose Mirabel to be the next caretaker/owner, compounded by the final scene no less. she doesnt have a door because they are alternate worlds essentially that the house has no power over (shown by mira going into Bruno’s) and Abuela still lives so Mirabel cant take over yet. the cracks started because the family is the miracle and they need to be in harmony for the magic to keep working.and we all know how the family, especially Abuela, reacted to Mirabel not getting a power. and the cracks speed up the worse Mirabel feels as well, they all affect it but Mirabel and Abuela seem to have the strongest influence on it.
I don’t like those theories because if that were true she would technically still get her own room. I just like the idea that during her gift ceremony the house just kinda glitched out like how it did later and that’s why she didn’t get a gift. I also just like the idea that she didn’t give a gift which gives her the ability to help others as she doesn’t have the burden that they have to carry. And even then she still has her own suffering as despite not knowing the misery that her family members go through she still wants to be helpful so she wishes she had a gift but yet she never gets one.
I had the exact same thoughts about Luisa throughout the movie. Even though the family saw using their gifts for the village as a duty, the way she was constantly expected to do free labor for everyone pissed me off. Just because someone's big and strong doesn't mean you can treat them like a pack mule (or climb their bodies without permission). She's even asked to move the piano during dinner like it's nothing, when she could have been tired or sore. They could have played the piano from wherever the hell it was.
You can't really just blame it on others for asking something of Luisa when Luisa herself doesn't say "No" or Deny any of these requests. It's clearly part of Luisa's personality to just help others and do what they need her to do because she knows herself that She can do it in a way that others can't. So it's just an endless pressure on Luisa, as if she doesn't say no then people think it's okay to ask more of her, but asking more of her would put more pressure but she still won't say no to them.
Surface pressure which is the song Luis sings is actually based on the writer's older sister. Luisa is sort of like a tribute to her and older sisters.

You can’t put that kind of pressure on a kid! Considering pepa is always treated as dramatic and no one takes her feelings seriously I doubt they took Luisa seriously either making her ignore her own feelings to put others first.
Luisa based so much of her personality and self-worth around her gift that she completely broke down once it started to go away. This only shows just how extraordinarily resilient Mirabel is; the strongest Madrigal couldn't handle even one day in Mirabel's shoes.
The thing about Julieta is we dont get to see her struggle much but we all know shes has it the hardest. She wakes up early and cooks food for a whole village everyday. Thats why she has the most gray hair out of all the triplets. And she still manages to be a kind, encouraging mom. And we all know that she was probably like a second mom for her siblings because of her power. Poor girl. Well Bruno also has streaks of gray in his hair. I think Pepa also has a few through her auburn hair, you can see if you look really closely. But I do agree that Julieta definitely has the most gray hair of the triplets.
Also, the fact that they get their gifts at like 5 years old. That means that even at 5 she was probably spending all waking hours baking and healing grownups. Plus, they didnt have Luisa strength yet, so the towns people were building and moving everything themselves so probably were injured constantly. The amount of bad injuries she probably saw at so young and was expected to heal alone, instead of being a kid
Pepa's gift seemed awful to me the moment they mentioned it. Yeah, weather control sounds awesome... but being emotion controlled just means she has to force herself to be happy all the time. Something that becomes especially hard when a bad moment brings about weather that just wants to put you in a worse mood
You know what else, some characters can definitely be explored much further. Some like Julietta and Camilo. So many people say stuff like "Camilo's just a teenage boy he loves his gift" Dude had a total of 5 minutes in the movie and was purely used for comic relief, he can have a whole lot of backstory we don't know about. Same with a lot of Pepas side of the family
I just wish that Casita could have comeback without the gifts. Also, can we appreciate that Felix willing married someone with such dangerous and unpredictable powers? And that includes meeting Pepa, dating, proposing, being engaged, staying with her to start a family and have three kids, etc. Most guys find one fault and they’re gone. Just shows how amazing of a character Felix is! ☀️
For real though, can you imagine what it was like when Pepa was giving birth? Weather powers + painful child labor (idk if they had painkillers or not) = not a fun time for anyone. And even her more positive emotions I imagine could be destructive, like what if she was really happy and it caused a draught or something?

An extra detail is that on the new door at the front of casita, Delores is the only person who looks unhappy, due to her having to hear everything, loud, all of the time all over again

When it comes to Pepa, "We don't talk about Bruno" and how quick she was to hug him, I think a big part of why she doesn't want to talk about him is because his absence hurts. He's not just her brother, he's her triplet, and I can't help think both she and Julieta felt something was terribly missing without him for that 10 years. So as soon as she saw him there, Pepa rushed to hug him, with Julieta right behind, because that painful empty spot that was their triplet bond was finally fixed.
I mean honestly after watching the movie several times over I came to the realization that really no one in the family ever hated Bruno. In fact he was never "exiled" which is something a lot of people misconstrue. He only left because he didn't want mirabel to be treated badly because of the vision he was asked to have of her. No one asked him, or forced him to leave, he *chose* to leave to avoid unnecessary conflict....and I think the scene where he is calling his gift unhelpful is literally just how he has learned to cope with his self-imposed isolation. He has to continue to justify his absence as "its better if I'm gone" otherwise his sacrifice was in vain. Kind of like how people will say they're horrible people and no one should interact with them as an excuse for why they push away their friends and family, that the people they care about would be "better" without them. I believe that "We don't talk about Bruno" is likewise the family's way of coping with the fact that they feel abandoned by a family member they thought they could trust. They don't know *why* he left, only that he did, so in their hurt they're finding reasons to dislike him after the fact. I think the only exceptions to this really is Camillo, Dolores, and Isabella, who were too young to really make an opinion on his leaving, (and I believe Camillo, being his mother's emotional support son, picked up on her feelings towards the situation and thus imagines him as a villain) and thus are more honest. Mirabel was too young to really remember him. I mean in the end, Abuela and family were *worried* about mirabel and scared about what her not having a gift could mean, so they asked Bruno to look into it. Then Bruno just....dipped. No note, no reason why, nothing. He told *no one*. Imagine if, for instance, you were scared for the safety of your child and the person you asked for help just f*cked off the face of the world, blocked you on social media and never gave you a reason why? Would your first instinct be "oh hey he probably had a good reason?" Or would it be more "He must of not cared about me, my child, or the rest of us, because why would he leave us when we needed him?" However, of course, they always did love him. They were just hurt, feeling like he abandoned them. I think that's also why Abuela rushes him when she sees him because she *never* hated her own son (as much as she may have disliked some of his visions), she just, again, felt hurt because SHE was the one to ask him to have the vision about Mirabel (The last vision he had, and the one he never showed anyone before disappearing into the walls). Pepa and Julieta I believe are the same way (though they didn't know Abuela asked him to have a vision about Mirabel). Sorry for the long comment lol, but this is a really lovely complex side to the relationship and the song that I believe gets so overlooked because people simplify "this person good, that person bad" too much for this film lol.
One of the things I really loved about this film was that there was no one clear cut ‘villain’. The conflict comes from the relationship between the family members and their place in the community. Definitely one of the best films Disney has made imo.
Actually I think Camilo might be the only one other than Mirabel who doesn't actually remember him because Isa and dolores would be about 11 when Bruno left while Luisa was 9. So they probably remembered him especially since they don't meet a bunch of new people in the encanto.
I get the feeling casita doesn't choose this. I think she's just the caretaker and someone to be there to make sure the home is always protected. She doesn't have control over the magic rooms at all, as stated in the movie, so I very much doubt she has any influence on the entire process.
When they all went back in though, their gifts seemed to be making them happier - I saw an excerpt of the script that said under Mirabel's Miracle, their powers weren't quite so set in stone and they were all able to appreciate them and have more time to relax. Like Pepa was laughing under a snow cloud, and she didn't care any more that it *was* a cloud, Isabela was able to use her powers to express herself the way she wanted, Luisa was deposited in a hammock (by the donkeys) and given a cocktail. The only person I really feel sorry for is Dolores - she's still going to be hearing everything 😕 At least she has Mariano now
I think with them having a break from having those gifts and the assumed expectations that came with them, to refocus themselves on their internal issues rather than just covering them up to appear flawless like before, they came back together genuinely as a stronger and happier family.
I feel like everyone gets most characters struggles, Isabella being pressured to be fake perfect, Luisa having her worth being measured on how many people she can help in a day, Dolores not having one moment of peace and being constantly tortured by her power, Camillo having to be the emotional release for everyone and rather being anyone else than himself, We dont even need to explain Pepa or Bruno being bullied out of existence for being too inconvenient or Mirabel for not being special. Little Antonio's fear of being treated like crap like his mom or Tio or even Mirabel but also to continue a family legacy. But when people think of Julieta, they only think about her cooking and how she doesnt seem bothered. Imagine the pressure of being the older daughter, the only one who doesnt cause trouble, the one your mom counts on to be her right hand, to keep everything and everyone just working perfectly, caring for your siblings by keeping them out of trouble and defending them from everyone elses anger, including your mom's. Listening to your siblings and your mom in constant conflict and trying to defuse the situation. She also was like Isabela when she was young, expected to have a good marriage and have kids, cause Abuela probably didnt believe Pepa and Bruno could. Shes seeing history repeating itself thru her daughter but like everyone else she doesnt have the courage to say anything against it. She was taught to put on a smile, be helpful, kind, feminine, docile and obedient, feeding everyone in the village and being everyones nurse/healer. Imagine being responsible for the health of a whole village? And does she get any credit? No, shes ignored by everyone, shes invisible, just serving and nodding, while Abuela bullies all the other members of the family. Girl must be exhausted 24/7, shes obviously low energy, probably in full dissociation most of the time and must feel hella guilty for seeing her daughters suffer and not being strong enough to break the cycle. Shout out to the husbands for trying to help the whole situation while still being supportive to their wives decision to keep respecting Abuelas wishes and the family hierarchy, even if they dont agree with it. thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Theory time (I watched the movie today and am dismissing the candle thing because there isn't any waxy oil stains like you would have with wax) So, let's talk about strength. Mirabel isn't strong physically nor telepathically, but she is in other ways. For example, the stubborn will to move past being berated, shunned, and flat-out abused by her own grandmother and family. She literally hugged the very woman who tortured her every single time gifts were mentioned, and it spread to the town, like it always does. Thing is, Mirabel is curious and stubborn and always searches for conclusions, aka why she made Bruno not only do another vision but find the clue needed to start piecing things together. La Casita probably did give her a gift, but not one in a normal sense like doors. Instead, through sheer will and survivor instincts. Why else would Casita ONLY SHOW Mirabel the damage over time to lead to the candle or saving the miracle. She was fighting for basically her grandfather because I have a strong felling his soul went to the candle to protect and give life to his family after he was chop shopped by machetes. He probably gifted Mirabel strength so that one day the decision on what happens to the house will be made by someone who is far more mentally strong than a widowed grandmother who takes out her traumas by generations and abandoned one of her children to the point where he left in order to protect Mirabel fearing the worst for her since everyone assumes he is awful with no wild card/chance of good or bad. The truth. TL/DR: Mirabel did get the gift, and her instinct to wipe the wax off was honestly probably a sensory thing since nobody told her not to do that and her gift is mental strength.
Isabela’s behavior in 4:38 shows a lot of anxiety, guilt, sadness and fear. The brushing off her dress nervously, not meeting peoples gazes, literal hugging herself. I feel really bad for her.
Luisa is my favorite character and she’s my perfect, wholesome, beautiful amazing little Cinnabon roll and it really makes me so mad that not even once did she ever get a simple “Thank You” for everything that she does from anyone in the whole movie
Watching this movie, you realize how not everyone is as happy as they seem. This is true in real life. I mean for this movie it’s in the form of gifts/blessings. even with mirabel and abuela, afraid to be left in the dark and scared to lose everything she “worked” so hard for. The ending scene where mirabel sees herself in the doorknob and says “i see me” i bawled like a baby, bc that scene felt so important to me. the feeling that you are enough as you are. every character has a lesson along side them, and it’s so beautiful to see

Luisa is totally my favorite character.
Abuela was 100% living vicariously through Isabella. She looks the most like a young Abuela, and she's being married to Mariano who looks a lot like Abuelo Pedro. Abuela's forcing Isabela to live the "perfect" life she wishes she could have lived had she not lost her home.
There is obvious color coding in the family too. Like pepe and Felix's side are yellows and oranges, and julieta and Augustine's sides are blue and purple. Notably except for Isabella who wears pink. Which is a younger brighter version of abuela wearing red. I think they were color coding Isabella more in line with abuela. Also at the end of the movie when Isabella is allowed to be messy she wears blue
I think the girl in one of Bruno’s visions looks like Isabella too, which caused Mirabel to attempt to fix the miracle by “talking it out” and “hugging,” but the girl was revealed to be Abuela at the end, so Isabella does look like her

Everything could have turned out differently if people had listened to his observations of others (and not blamed for the truth about the "rain", the death of a fish, that someone would gain weight and someone would go bald). If for years there were no such problems in a family that hid its problems, sacrificed something instead of solving everything together. Moreover, not to push Bruno away, what will happen gives others the opportunity to prepare. And whether it's good or not depends on how people look at it. Because any experience is useful in its own way for further growth.

Personally, I believe that the reason Pepa tries to frantically calm herself down literally all the time is because her gift is like Bruno's - it doesn't help the family. It only causes chaos. So she's probably scared that Abuela will treat her the way she treated Bruno, and that she'll be cast out just because of the chaotic gift she was given. That's, from my point of view, the reason Felix and Camilo always try to like calm her down and help her conceal her clouds - her feelings, from Abuela.
Actually a very good explanation of her current mental health and I really hope -if there’s is an extension of Encanto or another movie- that we get to see a more of Pepa‘s side of the family.
Mirabel explains that Pepa’s abilities help with the crops and when she is in a good mood the days are sunny and warm and if she is worried at least the village doesn’t have to worry about droughts. The problem is that she’s expected to keep a sunny mood most of the time and that’s impossible for anyone who’s not a sociopath.

My theory is that all of their "powers" are manifestations of their generational trauma. Julieta wishes that there had been some way Abuela could have healed Abuelo, Bruno thought, "If only Abuela and Abuelo had known those bad people were coming, maybe they could have done something to stop it", Pepa just straight-up has anxiety, Isabella felt the need to be perfect to cheer up her unstable family members, Luisa feels the need to be strong to hold the family together, Dolores became hyper-aware of every sound because when you have an emotionally unstable parent noticing a door or cabinet shut just a little too loudly is a survival tactic, Camilo is a trickster and joker at heart but his fear that this doesn't make him a useful family member made him wish he could be "someone else." Antonio is literally the only family member whose power has nothing to do with generational trauma... why? Because it was Mirabel that spoke to him before his door ceremony--- not Abuela. Mirabel told him it was totally okay to be himself no matter what. What did Abuela tell Mirabel before her ceremony? She retold their most traumatic family memory. It's fair to assume that she told every family member this horrible traumatic memory before every door ceremony. The fact that Mirabel was the one to break this cycle shows that Casita chose the right person to become the new family Matriarch. This also explains why Casita didn't give Mirabel her own room. Casita wanted Mirabel to be there for future family members before their door ceremonies.

Pepa's gift is actually quite unfortunate because not only is she constantly drenched, but she's getting others rained or snowed on. Her weather is also an obvious disruption to the goings-on of those around her, such as having wind blowing things around.
Not only this, but she can't even seem to have an emotion without everyone knowing how she feels. She can't lie, be sad, angry, or even nervous privately.
Delores is indeed probably losing her mind, because she doesn't seem to be able to turn off her super hearing. She can hear EVERYTHING going on in a wide radius, and I'm sure the sound of so many people talking, eating, playing music, going to the bathroom, doing...other things...is absolutely maddening.
Isabella was, to put it crudely, almost pressured into becoming a brood mare to bring forth another generation to endure the same pressures as the rest of the family. Not to mention the expectation that everything she did and said should be perfect at all times, right down to symmetrical flowers.
I honestly believe that Isabela couldn’t stand Mariano and would love nothing more but to punch him in the face. The plants proved that not once, but twice. 😂

I don't think Isabela HATES Mariano. After all he is a kind, handsome, man who loves his family and makes his mother proud. She just doesn't love him. It seems to me like she barley even knows him, and the families are just setting up an arranged marriage. Of course, she is still unhappy and doesn't want to marry him.
Everything worked out in the end though. Mariano ends up with Delores, so he still joins the family Madrigal. And Isabela is now free to explore her power, find herself, and maybe find love on her own terms if she chooses to eventually marry.

Though, depending on how good she knows Dolores' hearing to be, she may have been upset that her cousin never blew up the whole "Isabella already loves someone else" ticking bomb, as I am sure, that even if Abuela may not have approved (at first) since she was living by proxy through Isabella, her parents and Mariano would have all not only understood she felt pressured by Abuela, hence why she didn't say anything, and Mariano would not force someone who loves another to be with him, as he is a good person (and I consider he would understand because he wants to make his mother proud... hell, it could be interesting to even hear him admit, that maybe, he too was kinda doing it because he wanted to make his mother proud).
Also the fact that during the proposal scene abuela tells Luisa to get the piano not allowing her a moment to eat her meal and be with the family, she IMMEDIATELY gets up even though she’s eating

The way Isabella immediately shrinks into herself when Abuela shows up, physically becoming smaller. During the whole movie her movements were small and confined, even while dancing her arms never went too far out. During her song she's flinging herself every which way and expressing so much. But when Abuela shows up and starts yelling she holds her arms to her sides and slouches a bit.

I like to think that when the miracle was reignited it was better than before, Dolores could control if she wanted super hearing or not, Pepa's power wasn't as tied to her emotions, so she would not just create a tropical storm if she saw a rat and the overall healthier environment of the family was able to make up for the rest of the shortcomings.
i really hope thats the case, they looked so miserable with their gifts before.

What I just realized about this movie (I've watched it many times now lol) is that the gifts were supposed to be things that made them happy; things they enjoyed. They were like Abuelo Pedro's last gift to his family. He didn't want them to grow to resent them. For example, I get the feeling that Isabella loved plants and nature, just like Antonio loved animals, etc. At the end, when they got their gifts back, it was different; they felt they were allowed to enjoy their gifts as they would have wanted to enjoy them.
People don’t talk enough about Madrigals getting an animal whisperer and the next day a bunch of donkeys get out and the village’s first instinct isn’t to ask him but to go to Luisa who is already doing 5 other things

I feel like, in Dolores' case, the worst tragedy is that she is *trained* by Abuela to spill the beans constantly, as soon as she gets info/is asked to. Of all the Madrigals, she is with Isabela one of the very few that passively fight against her influence (interesting enough, they're the elder of their respective siblings) and keeps things to herself (Bruno being still there and working in the shadows to keep the house afloat)
We can't say if Dolores is TRAINED by Abuela, You're stating things without actual facts or evidence to back it up. Your uncle whom is always been seen as a bad-omen, your mom telling you that he ruined her wedding, and him basically telling you how the love of your life would be betrothed to someone else? I would be pretty weary and scared of him (stated at the beginning of her part of "We don't Talk about bruno"), and it seems like he actively makes the choice of staying in the walls so it's quite easy to get stay quiet and just give him some food through the cracks or something. But when it comes to the magic dying? YEAAAHHH That's a pretty BIG secret to hold onto, as not only could it devastate you and your family as you wouldn't know what to do without it, your whole community whom has been depending on your family and the magic would be devastated too.
Bruno's case is weird as we don't entirely know why people fully accepted to not talk about Bruno, as Either it's because they know Abuela still loves Bruno and would be devastated if he was ever mentioned (Not really having a good coping mechanism to deal with her own trauma of the death of her Husband), AND While we do get the whole "He predicts the future" What can we say that he can't influence it in any bit? After all, his literal sister can control the WEATHER, so it makes sense why people would just assume he would make bad things than predict it.
Also, Isabella literally stated that one of the reasons why she would act perfect is for Abuela to be happy, so I don't think that's passively fighting against Abuela's influence.

Well, considering her power is most like caused by a family dynamic where she's literally had to use her ears and tip toe around not to upset anyone, I'd say she should be able to tune it down herself now there's no cause for it anymore.
It wasn't the magic making them miserable. It was just they were so pressured to being perfect and Abuela put so much on them. But when Isa was able to make her own flowers she was still happy with her magic. She just wanted to use it her own way. Same with Pepa. When she let herself let loose she could be happy with her powers. Plus I think everyone would have been sad if Casita remained a normal house cuz Casita had a personality too.
Agree with everything, including Casita getting its own powers back. It played as much of a character in the film as any of the Madrigals! I also read somewhere that there's a theory that Abuelo Pedro's spirit (represented by butterflies) is the one that powers the Casita and watches over the family.. I could totally see that!! 🦋🏡
my theory is that casita is abuela's husband in spirit form. casita always makes sure the family is safe, especially mirabel since she has no magic. it seemed like casita knew how important mirabel was to the family. always letting mirabel know to hang in there. i love this movie so much :D

One thing you might notice is that many of the characters' clothes are a reflection of their powers. Dolores has little motifs that look like sound waves, Isabela's dress is very floral, Pepa has sun earrings and sunny waves on the collar of her yellow dress, Julietta has healing herbs embroidered all over her clothes, Camilo has chameleons on his poncho, Luisa has barbells on her skirt, Bruno has hourglasses on his poncho, even Antonio has animals on his clothes before he gets his ability to talk to animals. Mirabel is covered in butterflies. The candle has a very prominent butterfly on it. Mirabel is the living embodiment of the miracle, which is why it flickers and weakens along with every time Mirabel loses hope. This is also why she seems to be the only one who can communicate with casita on the level that she does, why her door "disappeared," and why casita came back to life when she turned the front door for the first time. She doesn't have a room because casita itself is her "room." The love and hope that Pedro had for Alma and his children is what led him to sacrifice himself for them and the power of that caused the miracle and allowed them to, well, fly free like butterflies. Mirabel's love and hope helps Luisa, Isabela, Bruno, and Abuela to see how they were trapped in fear and to free themselves to become happier, healthier people. It's subtle, but I think the signs are all there.
I think in some cases the magic does make them miserable, in case of doleras (I probably botched the spelling) she suffer from chronic sensory overload, Pepa has to suffer with getting soaked whenever she gets ticked off

When I tell you I cried watching this movie, I CRIED. It came out around the time I'd just lost my job and before I got my new one and I'd been having problems with my own family. Heck, that night I'd had a big fight with my mother who thought I wasn't trying hard enough. I decided to watch this movie at like 3 am early in January just to take my mind off the stress and I identified so hard with Mirabel that I cried at three points- first when Mirabel sang "Waiting On A Miracle", once when Mirabel and Abuela fought after Isabella's song, and once when Mirabel and Abuela had their conversation at the end of the movie. I was such a mess by the end of it I had to get my older sister on the phone and just talk to calm myself down and absolutely gush over the movie. I absolutely adore this movie, I will never not love it.

In Colombia it's apparently good luck to have rain on your wedding day, which is really interesting when it's such a negative symbol for Pepa. She's so worried about having any negativity that she can't see the good things and Felix has to ground her and show her what she's not seeing. Mad props to Felix and Augustin this whole movie though, they are the healthiest part of the whole family and I adore them.
What I think is that Alma told Pepa "You have to make sure that it's a good weather on your wedding day because the whole town will be there to see you get married".
So that is how she became that nervous and made everything else happen when Bruno tried to cheer her up...

i just realised that their gifts are actually roles in family trauma. Isa is put under pressure of being perfect, Luisa is being taken advantage of, Pepa is told to bottle up her emotions, Camilo is having problems with his identity/is a forgotten middle child and Bruno is an outcast just because people don't understand his words and so on
And their gifts represent the steps needed to repair that trauma. They need to talk (Antonio), listen (Dolores), be open with their emotions (Pepa), be flexible and willing to change (Camilo), grow together (Isabela), heal each other (Julieta), lift each other up and lend each other their strengths (Luisa), and look forward to the future rather than dwell in the past (Bruno).

I feel so bad for Pepa and Dolorous, Pepa can't get a moment of peace because she's always stressed about her gift which in turn makes her even more stressed and Dolorous can hear literally EVERYTHING in a mile radius.

I feel bad for Dolores. She actually covers her ears duirng Antonio's gift receiving because it's so loud. It must be painful. My husband wondered if her magic room was soundproof so she could sleep. But from things she said in the movie I don't think so. Her and her mom got the worst gifts.
Apparently the creator confirmed her room is sound proof.
Also when she says she heard Luisa's eye twitching all night, she meant during the party.
Poor Dolores
Her moms gift can be cool and useful if she learned how to properly control it, like she did at the end of the movie. Dolores is just fucked though. There are few benefits to being able to hear everything.
I used to think it'd be a cool "superpower" to have, then a friend told me about a time he and his dad had a quiet conversation in their kitchen, and his mom heard everything even though she was at the other end of the house -- because she was lying in her darkened bedroom suffering from a migraine. If that's the trade-off, there's no way in hell I'd want that power.

I love that this movie is about a dysfunctional family that actually loves each other very much. They just needed some therapy and better communication skills.
And Abuela to get corrected for child abuse by generations but she's a woman so she's allowed to torture and berate everyone.

I could imagine that Camilo might have trouble finding out who he truly is while changing his form almost all the time.
The "Imperfect" flower was actually the only white flower, and white represents purity.
This makes it worse because she was basically symbolically pressuring her into losing her virginity to a person she doesn't particularly love solely for the family's reputation.
It was also a Daisy which are considered weeds in some places so it has the second symbolic meaning of Abuela literally weeding the thoughts/personality traits she doesn't like out of Isabela's head like a gardener.
To be fair, it seems Abuela didn't know that Isa wasn't in love with him. In her mind, she was just excited for them to start a new generation of family and missed the warning signs that Isa felt pressured into the relationship. Just like she missed the signs that everyone else was suffering because of her inability to look beyond their gifts.
Not just her virginity, but her whole life (chance of genuine love, individuality, etc) which is WAY more important than your virginity, and far more permanent.

@@Furienna definitely, but I think the whole marriage - trying to act in love, smiling constantly, waking up next to them, kissing goodnight, watching other people live the life you want around you EVERY DAY, knowing this is the life you are stuck in until you die.... Cumulatively, I think that is way worse than losing your virginity to someone you don't love.
(Speaking as someone who still has nightmares about the guy I lost my V to. I was planning on waiting til marriage before him, and that was a huge part of my identity back then. My virginity is the LAST thing I think about now- it's just a story I might tell as a joke now to friends).
I love seeing the theories that Mirabel's gift _is_ the miracle, her undying support and love for her family despite their differences is what keeps the miracle alive.
Or that she was free of the burdens of the magic. I also like the theories that she was given the gift of empathy and understanding, and the gift of talking to Casita, since she seems to be the only one who does that.
There was a theory that ever since Mirabel's ceremony, the house started cracking more, because she felt she wasn't accepted anymore ever since the ceremony (she tried finding ways to see what her miracle was, and already gave up during the events of the movie). Alma never hugged Mirabel ever since she was 5.
one of the theories i’ve seen which i subscribe to is that while she doesnt have a magical gift, her gift is the miracle itself. like how Abuela has no magical gift but is kinda the cae taker of the candle and the leader of the family. the woman is getting on in years and probs doesnt have long left and the house chose Mirabel to be the next caretaker/owner, compounded by the final scene no less. she doesnt have a door because they are alternate worlds essentially that the house has no power over (shown by mira going into Bruno’s) and Abuela still lives so Mirabel cant take over yet.
the cracks started because the family is the miracle and they need to be in harmony for the magic to keep working.and we all know how the family, especially Abuela, reacted to Mirabel not getting a power. and the cracks speed up the worse Mirabel feels as well, they all affect it but Mirabel and Abuela seem to have the strongest influence on it.
I think it’s also to remind the family that they are human, and to not lose sight of what the gifts’ meaning really are
I don’t like those theories because if that were true she would technically still get her own room. I just like the idea that during her gift ceremony the house just kinda glitched out like how it did later and that’s why she didn’t get a gift. I also just like the idea that she didn’t give a gift which gives her the ability to help others as she doesn’t have the burden that they have to carry. And even then she still has her own suffering as despite not knowing the misery that her family members go through she still wants to be helpful so she wishes she had a gift but yet she never gets one.

I had the exact same thoughts about Luisa throughout the movie. Even though the family saw using their gifts for the village as a duty, the way she was constantly expected to do free labor for everyone pissed me off. Just because someone's big and strong doesn't mean you can treat them like a pack mule (or climb their bodies without permission). She's even asked to move the piano during dinner like it's nothing, when she could have been tired or sore. They could have played the piano from wherever the hell it was.
You can't really just blame it on others for asking something of Luisa when Luisa herself doesn't say "No" or Deny any of these requests. It's clearly part of Luisa's personality to just help others and do what they need her to do because she knows herself that She can do it in a way that others can't. So it's just an endless pressure on Luisa, as if she doesn't say no then people think it's okay to ask more of her, but asking more of her would put more pressure but she still won't say no to them.
Surface pressure which is the song Luis sings is actually based on the writer's older sister. Luisa is sort of like a tribute to her and older sisters.

You can’t put that kind of pressure on a kid! Considering pepa is always treated as dramatic and no one takes her feelings seriously I doubt they took Luisa seriously either making her ignore her own feelings to put others first.
Luisa based so much of her personality and self-worth around her gift that she completely broke down once it started to go away. This only shows just how extraordinarily resilient Mirabel is; the strongest Madrigal couldn't handle even one day in Mirabel's shoes.
The thing about Julieta is we dont get to see her struggle much but we all know shes has it the hardest. She wakes up early and cooks food for a whole village everyday. Thats why she has the most gray hair out of all the triplets. And she still manages to be a kind, encouraging mom. And we all know that she was probably like a second mom for her siblings because of her power. Poor girl.

Well Bruno also has streaks of gray in his hair. I think Pepa also has a few through her auburn hair, you can see if you look really closely. But I do agree that Julieta definitely has the most gray hair of the triplets.
Also, the fact that they get their gifts at like 5 years old. That means that even at 5 she was probably spending all waking hours baking and healing grownups. Plus, they didnt have Luisa strength yet, so the towns people were building and moving everything themselves so probably were injured constantly.
The amount of bad injuries she probably saw at so young and was expected to heal alone, instead of being a kid

Pepa's gift seemed awful to me the moment they mentioned it. Yeah, weather control sounds awesome... but being emotion controlled just means she has to force herself to be happy all the time. Something that becomes especially hard when a bad moment brings about weather that just wants to put you in a worse mood
You know what else, some characters can definitely be explored much further. Some like Julietta and Camilo. So many people say stuff like "Camilo's just a teenage boy he loves his gift" Dude had a total of 5 minutes in the movie and was purely used for comic relief, he can have a whole lot of backstory we don't know about. Same with a lot of Pepas side of the family
I just wish that Casita could have comeback without the gifts. Also, can we appreciate that Felix willing married someone with such dangerous and unpredictable powers? And that includes meeting Pepa, dating, proposing, being engaged, staying with her to start a family and have three kids, etc. Most guys find one fault and they’re gone. Just shows how amazing of a character Felix is! ☀️

For real though, can you imagine what it was like when Pepa was giving birth? Weather powers + painful child labor (idk if they had painkillers or not) = not a fun time for anyone. And even her more positive emotions I imagine could be destructive, like what if she was really happy and it caused a draught or something?

An extra detail is that on the new door at the front of casita, Delores is the only person who looks unhappy, due to her having to hear everything, loud, all of the time all over again
No wonder Julieta makes arepas. It's small, not many ingredients, easy to make, and keeps well I imagine. I'm sure she has a fridge full and a shelf just for her husband.

When it comes to Pepa, "We don't talk about Bruno" and how quick she was to hug him, I think a big part of why she doesn't want to talk about him is because his absence hurts. He's not just her brother, he's her triplet, and I can't help think both she and Julieta felt something was terribly missing without him for that 10 years. So as soon as she saw him there, Pepa rushed to hug him, with Julieta right behind, because that painful empty spot that was their triplet bond was finally fixed.
I mean honestly after watching the movie several times over I came to the realization that really no one in the family ever hated Bruno. In fact he was never "exiled" which is something a lot of people misconstrue.
He only left because he didn't want mirabel to be treated badly because of the vision he was asked to have of her. No one asked him, or forced him to leave, he *chose* to leave to avoid unnecessary conflict....and I think the scene where he is calling his gift unhelpful is literally just how he has learned to cope with his self-imposed isolation. He has to continue to justify his absence as "its better if I'm gone" otherwise his sacrifice was in vain. Kind of like how people will say they're horrible people and no one should interact with them as an excuse for why they push away their friends and family, that the people they care about would be "better" without them.
I believe that "We don't talk about Bruno" is likewise the family's way of coping with the fact that they feel abandoned by a family member they thought they could trust. They don't know *why* he left, only that he did, so in their hurt they're finding reasons to dislike him after the fact. I think the only exceptions to this really is Camillo, Dolores, and Isabella, who were too young to really make an opinion on his leaving, (and I believe Camillo, being his mother's emotional support son, picked up on her feelings towards the situation and thus imagines him as a villain) and thus are more honest. Mirabel was too young to really remember him.
I mean in the end, Abuela and family were *worried* about mirabel and scared about what her not having a gift could mean, so they asked Bruno to look into it.
Then Bruno just....dipped. No note, no reason why, nothing. He told *no one*.
Imagine if, for instance, you were scared for the safety of your child and the person you asked for help just f*cked off the face of the world, blocked you on social media and never gave you a reason why? Would your first instinct be "oh hey he probably had a good reason?" Or would it be more "He must of not cared about me, my child, or the rest of us, because why would he leave us when we needed him?"
However, of course, they always did love him. They were just hurt, feeling like he abandoned them. I think that's also why Abuela rushes him when she sees him because she *never* hated her own son (as much as she may have disliked some of his visions), she just, again, felt hurt because SHE was the one to ask him to have the vision about Mirabel (The last vision he had, and the one he never showed anyone before disappearing into the walls). Pepa and Julieta I believe are the same way (though they didn't know Abuela asked him to have a vision about Mirabel).
Sorry for the long comment lol, but this is a really lovely complex side to the relationship and the song that I believe gets so overlooked because people simplify "this person good, that person bad" too much for this film lol.

One of the things I really loved about this film was that there was no one clear cut ‘villain’. The conflict comes from the relationship between the family members and their place in the community. Definitely one of the best films Disney has made imo.
Actually I think Camilo might be the only one other than Mirabel who doesn't actually remember him because Isa and dolores would be about 11 when Bruno left while Luisa was 9. So they probably remembered him especially since they don't meet a bunch of new people in the encanto.

I get the feeling casita doesn't choose this. I think she's just the caretaker and someone to be there to make sure the home is always protected. She doesn't have control over the magic rooms at all, as stated in the movie, so I very much doubt she has any influence on the entire process.
When they all went back in though, their gifts seemed to be making them happier - I saw an excerpt of the script that said under Mirabel's Miracle, their powers weren't quite so set in stone and they were all able to appreciate them and have more time to relax. Like Pepa was laughing under a snow cloud, and she didn't care any more that it *was* a cloud, Isabela was able to use her powers to express herself the way she wanted, Luisa was deposited in a hammock (by the donkeys) and given a cocktail. The only person I really feel sorry for is Dolores - she's still going to be hearing everything 😕
At least she has Mariano now
I think with them having a break from having those gifts and the assumed expectations that came with them, to refocus themselves on their internal issues rather than just covering them up to appear flawless like before, they came back together genuinely as a stronger and happier family.
At the end of the movie, if you look really closely, the doors were glowing, they didn't have the family member's picture on them, just glowing

I feel like everyone gets most characters struggles, Isabella being pressured to be fake perfect, Luisa having her worth being measured on how many people she can help in a day, Dolores not having one moment of peace and being constantly tortured by her power, Camillo having to be the emotional release for everyone and rather being anyone else than himself, We dont even need to explain Pepa or Bruno being bullied out of existence for being too inconvenient or Mirabel for not being special. Little Antonio's fear of being treated like crap like his mom or Tio or even Mirabel but also to continue a family legacy. But when people think of Julieta, they only think about her cooking and how she doesnt seem bothered. Imagine the pressure of being the older daughter, the only one who doesnt cause trouble, the one your mom counts on to be her right hand, to keep everything and everyone just working perfectly, caring for your siblings by keeping them out of trouble and defending them from everyone elses anger, including your mom's. Listening to your siblings and your mom in constant conflict and trying to defuse the situation. She also was like Isabela when she was young, expected to have a good marriage and have kids, cause Abuela probably didnt believe Pepa and Bruno could. Shes seeing history repeating itself thru her daughter but like everyone else she doesnt have the courage to say anything against it. She was taught to put on a smile, be helpful, kind, feminine, docile and obedient, feeding everyone in the village and being everyones nurse/healer. Imagine being responsible for the health of a whole village? And does she get any credit? No, shes ignored by everyone, shes invisible, just serving and nodding, while Abuela bullies all the other members of the family. Girl must be exhausted 24/7, shes obviously low energy, probably in full dissociation most of the time and must feel hella guilty for seeing her daughters suffer and not being strong enough to break the cycle. Shout out to the husbands for trying to help the whole situation while still being supportive to their wives decision to keep respecting Abuelas wishes and the family hierarchy, even if they dont agree with it.

Theory time (I watched the movie today and am dismissing the candle thing because there isn't any waxy oil stains like you would have with wax)
So, let's talk about strength. Mirabel isn't strong physically nor telepathically, but she is in other ways. For example, the stubborn will to move past being berated, shunned, and flat-out abused by her own grandmother and family.
She literally hugged the very woman who tortured her every single time gifts were mentioned, and it spread to the town, like it always does. Thing is, Mirabel is curious and stubborn and always searches for conclusions, aka why she made Bruno not only do another vision but find the clue needed to start piecing things together. La Casita probably did give her a gift, but not one in a normal sense like doors. Instead, through sheer will and survivor instincts. Why else would Casita ONLY SHOW Mirabel the damage over time to lead to the candle or saving the miracle. She was fighting for basically her grandfather because I have a strong felling his soul went to the candle to protect and give life to his family after he was chop shopped by machetes. He probably gifted Mirabel strength so that one day the decision on what happens to the house will be made by someone who is far more mentally strong than a widowed grandmother who takes out her traumas by generations and abandoned one of her children to the point where he left in order to protect Mirabel fearing the worst for her since everyone assumes he is awful with no wild card/chance of good or bad. The truth.
TL/DR: Mirabel did get the gift, and her instinct to wipe the wax off was honestly probably a sensory thing since nobody told her not to do that and her gift is mental strength.
Isabela’s behavior in 4:38 shows a lot of anxiety, guilt, sadness and fear. The brushing off her dress nervously, not meeting peoples gazes, literal hugging herself. I feel really bad for her.
Luisa is my favorite character and she’s my perfect, wholesome, beautiful amazing little Cinnabon roll and it really makes me so mad that not even once did she ever get a simple “Thank You” for everything that she does from anyone in the whole movie
Watching this movie, you realize how not everyone is as happy as they seem. This is true in real life. I mean for this movie it’s in the form of gifts/blessings. even with mirabel and abuela, afraid to be left in the dark and scared to lose everything she “worked” so hard for. The ending scene where mirabel sees herself in the doorknob and says “i see me” i bawled like a baby, bc that scene felt so important to me. the feeling that you are enough as you are. every character has a lesson along side them, and it’s so beautiful to see
