- How To Grow Turmeric From Store Bought Tubers - Part 1 of 2. Turmeric is a rhizomatic tropical plant used for its bright orange fragrant root tubers. Its in the Ginger family and is quite easy to sprout and grow from the organic stuff you buy at the grocery store! Given the health benefits of this amazing root crop, we should all be growing a little organic Turmeric right at home!
In this video, follow along as I teach you how to first successfully sprout the Turmeric tuber, followed by what soils to use, and how to plant up that newly sprouted Turmeric baby! Easy stuff, but there are a few basic principles.
This is a great project for growing indoors and for teaching kids how things grow, as well as the vegetative life cycles of root and shoot development. One of the best indoor projects that you gardeners can do as we wait for our garden beds and plots to thaw outside.
As a fully tropical plant, Turmeric will need supplemental heat if you live in temperate regions or if your indoor temperatures are below 80F. Sprouting usually takes place within a week with viable tubers, although the progress of growth at this stage can vary quite a bit. Give it a try, starting, sprouting, and growing Turmeric indoors is highly rewarding, and most of all, super fun!

@@MiddleEastMilli Just growing the plants a bit larger with more roots before moving them on to their final pots. I can't move them outside until May, so I've been holding them back. They grow huge, like Ginger, almost too big for indoors! They need an outside growing session for adequate harvest.

You can remove the shoot and roots from the mother tuber. Just plant the shoot and roots. Put the mother tuber back and it will sprout again. I use peat moss which is much cheaper than coconut fiber. I also stuff as many tubers into the peat moss as possible. It really doesn't matter.
Turmeric is such an amazing plant like that! :-)
Coconut fiber is more sustainable!
@@Amoondar Peat moss grows freely in many places with nothing but some moisture. They don't even need rain. Just give them some shades. And they will grow all by themselves. They can even grow without soil. Put a rock in some shade and you will see moss growing on it. LOL It is one of the earliest life forms on this planet. And they survived millions and millions of years. They provide the earliest organic matter allowing modern plants to thrive.
@@trumplostlol3007 you gotta do more research. My partner worked at many grow shops so we know all about the industry. Moss growing on rocks and peat ARE NOT the same thing.

I tried to plant a little piece from 1 centimeter big. It now looks like a banana tree. I guarantee, they will not stop growing. And they grow super fast.
Even faster than Ginger...its quite amazing!

@@1voiceCriesOut It's kind of sad, but you should just kill the plant, and harvest the roots. You can plant a few back after that. It is not a big problem, because it grows so fast. You can also dig up what you need, and leave the rest.
@@1voiceCriesOut but yes I can harvest from it, there are like 7 big plants in one big pot now, but I want it to flower so i don't harvest it yet.

Most nurseries use the square pots for their smaller plants. They may not sell the plants in them, but they'll have tons for free. The 4", 5" and 5" ones are the most useful! I can't believe how the cold is coming in....ugghhh! Ha ha, happy growing.

The turmeric that I bought from Vermont Bean and Seed is pretty much round the first year I let it stay in the pots and stopped watering it . Near spring I started watering it and put it in a window area for light till spring. The second year I left it to grow in the same dirt. In the fall I pulled the tubers out soaked them in water and kept them in the near dark till early March. This 3rd. year I separated them and left the main tubers with s few of the small young ones attached. After about 2 months they started to sprout and the main tubers never sprouted but remain firm. I left the tops just out of the dirt. The attached tubers are the only ones that sprouted? Many of the smaller tubers that I placed in 4 to 6 inch pots sprouted . I have never had one flower. My tubers are rounder than yours and this year I'll give away many of the smaller plants. I'm wondering if I have the right turmeric? My wife is very tolerant of my experiments but I told her the blossoms would be worth the wait. What can I do to make them bloom? I can find a different source of tubers if you let me know what type to look for, or ware to buy them. please help If you can.
Loving your channel. Mixing your potting soil thought. Why not put the materials in a pot (I'm thinking of using an old cement mixer that I have and mix it. This gives time to thoroughly mixed the components of the mix.
For sure.. And going larger scale, I'd definitely need a less labor intensive way to mix! Good idea!

Thanks for the info, after watching your vid, looks like I can’t plant them now as summer is ending here and you said it needs a lot of warmth and humidity to sprout. I also don’t have any space indoors to do this. Btw, I also don’t have germination trays nor coconut fiber soil, just good potting mix or compost, and large pots and I’ll have to grow them outdoors in Spring. Will that do?
Just put it in some dirt in a vase indoors next to a window.. you dont need anything else

Thanks! Yeah, I ended up having to bring mine inside because it just didn't grow fast enough to beat out the coming fall. So I have 11 pots of it growing inside now, going to do a transition video into larger pots, then a final harvest video! :-)

I have an odd scenario, in which a friend gave me some tubers and I set outside in my lanai and forgot about them. Now, 4 months later and still sitting in a cup by themselves, i found them again and they started to sprout on their own. Florida heat and humidity did it on its own lol. My newb gardener question is if I should still soak them or place tubers right into the 1020 tray? Sorry for my ignorance, everyone starts somewhere and I’m excited to get these going... thanks in advance!

The Turmeric plant that I have indoors at a south facing window, each leaf that forms will turn brown at the edges and then slowly die. Do you know what causes this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

First time trying to grow some tumeric, they just sprouted (I planted in June) didn't know what I was doing so I'll have to bring them in this winter. Hopefully will be able to harvest in April. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Great video!! 👍
Hey Donna, getting them to sprout is half the battle! Definitely bring them inside, they are fully tropical. Try to give them as much sunlight as possible through a window and keep its temperature above 75F. The plants may be delayed a bit, so April might be a longshot, but definitely in the summer you should be harvesting!

I've bought ginger in the bulk section of the grocery store. I'm not sure if I've seen tumeric, though. Is it similar in flavor to ginger? I've got ground ginger on my spice shelf; but, no ground tumeric. Tumeric has something in it called curcumin, which shows some preliminary benefit in some studies in treating or preventing some types of cancer.
Yeah Donna, Turmeric is known for some pretty serious health claims. It grows nearly identical to Ginger. Harder to find though. The stuff we get comes all the way through Peru!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I need to get a warming pad. Or, I got turmeric with growth retardant on it. 🤔 I'm dehydrating tomatoes in the oven at 170 today so I have the container on top of the oven for added warmth. We keep our house 68-70 year round.

It's a great question. While I have no doubt that it would probably work... Turmeric (and Ginger) tubers have all they need to sprout and grow right away. It's only after a couple of weeks that they need a potting mix and extra nutrients. Whenever I've gone with a straight potting mix, I've had far more tubers rot than by going with peat moss or coco fiber.

Well...they are planted under the soil...so dark is fine. Until they sprout. :-)
Where is part 2 of growing Tumeric please.
Do you take all baby rhizomes off mother and replant the mother plant roots and all, or plant baby rhizomes with buds or both, idk what I'm doing lol
I just take a few rhizomes off to start new plants, the rest gets harvested completely

My turmeric shoots are begining to form leaves, but the leaves are very light-green. Its looks too light-green. I guess its too much sun at such a young age. My Question... is that normal or are the shoots getting too much sun to handle ?
Yeah, the leaves themselves shouldn't be a different color than the stems. It's not a super dark green plant to begin with, and they do love full sun, but check that you're not over watering or over heating them. Let me know how it goes bob.

If growing inside in a pot, is 69 degrees Fahrenheit year round with a full spectrum 5000K 1180 lumens LED lights good enough for turmeric?

Hey Sushma, you can water the trays while they are sprouting if they dry out, but I find with the clear domes over top, I don't really have to water them! Cheers. :-)
Were is part 2?
I planted some rhizomes few weeks ago, they still haven't budded. Any advice?
Its all heat and moisture. Weird that they haven't sprouted yet. Did you soak and/or wash them to make sure all growth suppressors were washed off?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms i did do all that, my guess is the soil i used is not really good and besides its raining and the climate is mildly cold these days where i am. Im going to change the soil on it. Is a soil mixed with compost good or what would you recommend?

Hey Tristin, mine are still gong strong. I think they should move up a size pot for another month or so. Growing indoors now, so that's slowed them down. Going to start a new batch in February so it can life a normal life cycle by going outside next summer. Cheers!

Same here Val, I'm in Victoria, BC. I use either a heat pad made for plants, a light source, or both.
