Hey, just found your channel. I wanted to share my experience with growing ginger & turmeric. I live just north of Atlanta, GA, USA (Zone 7, if that helps). I know wild ginger grows here so I decided to plant some raw organic ginger (and turmeric) from the store straight in the ground here and see if it would survive the cold winters. All the green leaves die back during the winter but they come back every year (when it warms up) on their own so they survive with no issue staying in the ground over the winter. No fuss. They don't even get full sun here... they have less than ideal sun (understatement) being in a heavily shaded/wooded area. They do great. No need to dig them up and replant. I recommend anyone interested just give it a try. I took really small pieces that had sprouted in my kitchen before I was able to finish it, and they are coming back bigger each year! Turmeric is super expensive and it has the most beautiful lush leaves! Again they die back in the winter but it makes a really beautiful plant for landscaping in the spring, summer, and fall! edited to add.. the ginger is in a totally shaded spot and obviously I think more sun would be ideal, and it would probably flourish even more, but I'm sort of just working with the space I have... that said, more of a message on it surviving in the ground over winter and doing well even in less than ideal sun conditions.
Nice one Mari. I leave at lest one patch of ginger in the ground here through our winters so we can harvest it fresh as needed. Helps that we live in the sub tropics though.
Thanks so much! Zone 7 in TN and ready to plant ginger. Rather than wrangling heavy containers I’d rather do it your way. Going to look for a spot today. How soon should I put in ground?
Thanks, I'm halfway between Augusta and Atlanta. I appreciate all your information. I love ginger and tumeric and have been trying to figure out if I can grow it here with the occasional frost.
Nice one Eunice 👍👍 Have been busy setting up some new beds here this week as well. It's a bit late for us to be planting ginger though so it will have to wait until August. Cheers & happy growing. 🌱🌱

I planted ginger from the store about a month ago and already is growing! So excited! But I water every other day, I guess I should slow down. Thank you for such a great video.
Thank your for such worth while information. This is my first year growing ginger in Maine. First year of growing ginger anywhere. I'm really excited to see the outcome.
I truly appreciate your demonstration of the harvest bringing the whole process full circle unlike so many other videos I've seen. Really helpful and cant wait to try it myself. I've got some great organic white ginger sprouting here in my cabinet here in Oakland California.
Watched a few videos on growing ginger but really enjoyed yours. Very informative, unrushed, and detailed. Thanks for giving both metric and imperial units and also for showing the US growing map. Seeing exactly how you've done it, I'm inspired to do likewise. I've just gotten around 200g of organic store-bought ginger that I will plant out in half-barrel containers today. Cold comes in October here in NY, and considering I've gotten in a bit late, I'll bring them indoors into the sun room to extend their life. Looking forward to watching your other videos over the coming month. Cheers!
Thank you Rob for producing the Informative and inspiring video. The five steps growing process is very easy to follow. I am amazed by the high yield from just nine rhizomes. I enjoyed watching it very much.
Than ks Mohammed. Hope to have another decent harvest in a few months time. Not sure it will be as large as this one as I didn't grow as many plants last season. Cheers & happy growing.
Planted ginger for the first time last year (July 2021) and since we have had a very mild Autumn I harvested them yesterday. Had a very nice crop. Will follow your tips and hope to have an even better one this year.
Hi Rob, excellent narration and videos, I enjoyed it very much. Tomorrow, I start my planting and look forward to my mini ginger farm in my backyard. Thank you.
Thank you for the useful tips. I've always been unable to get good yield. I've discovered it's because I did not let the cut areas heal and have been putting in smaller portions into the soil. I will try this now and hope for a bumper crop 😂. Thank you very much 🙏🏾
By far and away this is the best instructive video on anything. Step by step, full details and data, easy to listen to and uncluttered information. Now I believe I fully understand the the entire process and results to expect. Please don't change the format.
Wow, this is a great video!!! I started growing ginger just because it sprouted, but I had no idea what I was doing. I tried before but it always rotted. Now I know why. I live in Los Angeles, so I can grow lots of subtropical fruits. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. It’s awesome to finally actually see a complete video from sowing to harvesting. Enjoyed this video, and well done🕊
Dear Rob, Excellent advise and tips. exactly my experience too. i love your warning for the full sun. and great detail about the mother section. to show the for-and-after photo of the mother section. i will try to regrow the mother section next season again to see if that is possible. + how many years i could keep replanting the mother section. In Costa Rica, we let it grow for 2 years. then it took 2 seasoned men 50 minutes to dig out 1.5 mtr x 1 meter section to pull out about 40-50 kilogram of ginger. it was insane. (permaculture style)
I've only ever let the mother go for 2 seasons but can't see why it couldn't grow for more if it was healthy enough DD. That's a fantastic harvest as well mate, VERY impressive. Cheers & happy growing. 🌱🌱🌱
Thank you for the thorough breakdown! Awesome that you were converting measurements and degrees as you were teaching. What an enormous bounty! I swear even a 1/4 of that for me would be amazing. The store I buy my produce at has excellent organic goodies, but turmeric is quite expensive. For the same weight of ginger to turmeric I'm paying about $15 more for the turmeric. It's madness. Lol. So now I am absolutely going to try and grow both. I use quite a bit of both everyday in a blended drinkn I make. Thanks again!
Thanks for this video! So many videos out there on how to sprout and grow ginger, and yet none of the ones I've seen actually explain how to maintain and actually harvest it. :D Great to see the whole process.
Hi Rob. Greetings from my beautiful tropical country, the Philippines! So amazed watching your vid on Ginger planting. We began to grow some vegetation, fruit-bearing plants and even exotic plant trees as well in our bare-land somewhere down south. We got a lot of helpful tips and hopefully get a considerable harvest soon. Godspeed.
This video really goes to the full length of explaining growing ginger. I thank you so much. Not sure if ginger like our nordic climate, but will definitely try it.
Glad it was helpful Nerdbert. I do know a few folks that have tried to grow it way up north. The planet will grow to a point but the rhizome doesn't put on much size. Still worth a try to see how it goes. 👍 Happy growing 🌱
Wooow. i like the way youve ellaborated. Its not complicated to grow, can be dried and packed easily. Thanks very much. Am in the tropics and we dont have dont extreme weather conditions. will try growing.
That was one of the most informative and easy to follow vids on planting I have watched. I am headed outside right now and going to try my hand at it! Thanks
this Covid-19 social isolation thing isn't all that bad - been spending a hell of a lot more time out in the yard, along with dad. great channel - looks like Ginger is gonna be my first edible crop :)
I live in Canada so unfortunately my climate does not support the growing of ginger but I loved your video very thorough and encouraging I look forward to learning more now that I have subscribed
GOOD EVENING ROB, I REALLY LOVED YOUR VIDEO. YOU EXPLAINED PLANTING GINGER QUITE WELL THAT EVEN A BEGINNER CAN UNDERSTAND. I HAD BOUGHT A PIECE OF GINGER IN THE SPRING AND I HAD PLANNED TO MAKE SOME STIR FRIES AND I ALSO WANTED TO MAKE SOME TEAS WITH IT. UNFORTUNATELY, IT HAD GOTTEN PUSHED TO THE BACK OF MY COUNTER. WHEN I FOUND IT I NOTICED IT HAD GROWN LITTLE GREEN NUBS ON IT. SO I WASN'T SURE IF IT WOULD GROW, I FILLED A TALL POT WITH POTTING SOIL, I BROKE IT IN FOUR CHUNKY PIECES AND LET THE GINGER SIT OVER NIGHT TO DRY. THE NEXT EVENING I PLANTED THEM ON THE OUTTER SIDE OF THE POT AND ONE IN THE CENTER. STILL THINKING THAT THEY WOULDN'T GROW, BUT I LEFT THE POT UNDER A GROW LAMP. I OFTEN FORGET TO WATER THEM, BUT WE WERE GOING OUT ONE AFTERNOON, AND THERE THEY WERE FOUR TALL GREEN STALKS! I WAS SO THRILLED! NOW I'M NOT SURE IF I SHOULD TRANSPLANT THEM TO A LARGER POT (SEEING HOW LARGE YOUR GINGER HAD GROWN! I NEVER GREW IT BEFORE SO THIS IS MY FIRST TIME) I LIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA SO PLANTING OUTSIDE IS NOT AN OPTION. IT'S EITHER TOO HOT OR TOO COLD. WHAT SIZE POT DO YOU RECCOMEND THEY BE PLANTED IN? TO GROW PROPERLY? RIGHT NOW THEY ARE GROWING IN A 15 INCH POT. BLESS YOU AND ALL YOUR GARDENS! THANK YOU FOR PASSING ON YOUR KNOWLEDGE. ~ DEBBIE
Hi Debbie. I would move them up into a pot that's 12" or larger. That should give them enough room to spread out a bit. Try not to disturb the roots too much when transplanting as that my slow down their recovery time. Hope that helps some & Happy growing.
Thanks Rob l am absolutely gob smacked at the yield! I am inspired to grow my own and in a large pot too - Can’t wait for Spring to get started. God bless and thank you for something so positive in these Covid 19 times - something wonderful to look forward to.❤️🐨🇦🇺
I’m so happy 😀 and love it 😍 how you mentioned that’s a little of Cambodian ginger behind you!! Thank you for sharing us how to grow ginger step by step! It’s very helpful 😍😍After I’m done watching this I’m going to plant my ginger..I have been planting a few veggies such as snow peas, green beans, bak-choy, and different varieties of herbs, since the stay at home order....ty

Rewatching this wonderful video Rob , thank so much , will be implementing your 5 to try my 2nd round of ginger this season . 👌🙏 What a wonderful harvest !! I really miss the good old days when you did such videos , now that you have aquaponics as your major method of growing , I will just rewatch your older videos 🤓.
It is taking a while to get the soil area of the patch sorted out MBG. 👍 Most of the new wicking beds will need to be removed at some point & set up in their permanent positions after we get some landscape work done. Cheers my friend & have a top one.
This was a great, your produce was amazing and you are a natural presenter. I am off to find a decent piece of ginger or two to try to emulate you! Thank you for the inspirational video.
Planning to start growing ginger and love love looooove this video. I'm in Melbourne and hoping that now that spring has started, I can start growing these and hopefully with great results. 5 steps were very well explained and very concise. Thanks for this video!
I'm glad you found the video helpful Kathy. 😁 I was hoping to see some start to sprout here in the aquaponics but things have cooled down a bit this week. 🤔 Cheers & happy growing.🌱🌱
Very well done video. I have seen many crapy ones, yours is the best video I have seen. Most information and straight to the point. simple and easy. Keep up the good work .
Great video Rob. I have been looking for this for large scale farming and at last i find you. Will send you my small farm ginger soon. Keep it up. Shared knowledge is wealth.
Hello Thanks to you, I have just harvested my 4th year of ginger and turmeric from my grow bags. The candied pieces are in the pot awaiting sugaring and the ginger syrup from Jeff Herriot is in the pot ready to be bottled. It’s November here and we had our first freeze last night. I had a question on the grow bags. Every year thus far, I have emptied the bags and let them hang dry for the winter. As I grow older and more frugal , I wonder about leaving the soil in the grow bags over the winter. We have drops in temp a few nights a winter that go below zero. My bags are currently in the garden. Some are in trays some are on the ground. How do you think they will hold up if I don’t dump the soil? Do you dump yours and clean them out? Some of mine are growing moss around the bottom few inches. I agree with all the comments. Yours are the best videos going! Thanks for all the attention you put into them.
Thank you very Much Bonny. I would think they should be fine left over winter. I would recommend feeding them with some compost to get the beneficial microbes going in them for the next season. With our soil, I just "feed" it up with some compost & maybe more potting mix if the level drops to low. I hope that helps some & sorry for taking so long to respond to your post. Cheers & happy growing.
Hi Allen. I have done a video a few years back looking at growing garlic in warmer climates. ua-cam.com/video/zjI7prcwMrM/v-deo.html & this is the harvest video from that planting, ua-cam.com/video/CUR5C1AFxYw/v-deo.html I would share this seasons video but the yield wasn't as good due to me neglecting them a bit. Hope that helps some.
I watch this vid last year and planted my first ginger crop. I still have 5 month to wait til harvest. I have followed your steps and they are growing high and strong.
Great video! Planted my own ginger following your instructions. Half of them rotted away, the store bought ginger looked extremely parched. Was lucky it sprouted at all. Took it a full month to pierce the dirt surface, but it did (southern Europe, summer here now). So excited: a known tropical plant growing in my flower pots! Amazing! Thank you! Also, appreciated your on-the-go conversion metric/imperial units. Fot us Europeans it can be a bit distracting. Not in your videos: i can stay 100% focused. Good luck in your garden and keep them videos coming!
The mother rhizome can be used to start another crop next season Kaarin but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter. The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well. Cheers.
Thanks for watching how we like to grow our ginger & share the clip around with family & friends if you think they'll enjoy it too. 🐟 🌱🍅 Cheers all & have a top one. 😊 Rob
Hey Rob. I was wondering, can you replant the original ginger pieces after you harvest the new ones? I think I seen that done before, but can’t remember. Thanks. Love your videos

This is probably the most detailed and very easy to understand video tutorial on how to planting Ginger and to harvest large amounts of it. The other specific details that were explained in this video were extremely helpful especially for people who are garden beginners do you want to learn how to grow ginger properly. I really enjoyed your video. This gave me a great understanding on to how grow ginger properly. Thank you.
Since March I have used a lot of fresh herbs, specially for teas. About 2 months ago, I started to plant some of them like mint, sage, basil and so on. Today, you inspire me to start planting ginger and turmeric that I use a lot of those days. Thank you for your channel and keep it up. 👍👍👍👍👍
"Plant it out when it's over 25 degree celsius"... So that would be that one week a year in July here in Sweden haha! I'm gonna try anyway and just take it inside when the temperature goes below 0. Wish me luck!
I live in Canada and my ginger has recently sprouted. It took about 3 months and it's place in a room with afternoon direct sun. Place a heating pad under the pot if you see the warmth missing. Like yourself, warm weather doesn't start until late July thro August. I wish ou the best of luck with your gimger.
So excited and I can’t wait to grow my own ginger, you’ve made it appear so easy. I buy so much fresh ginger about 500- 600 grams a week to make ginger or yogi tea and sometimes the quality from the store is not the best. Thank you.
I absolutely love ur chanel . i had hoped to send a pic of my tiny ginger growing indoors and im in NJ southern part. Our weather here is "ify" but I've been feeding it home made compost and ot looks great so far . and as i stated id love to show u . anywayz ill keep watching for more tips.i also have few pineapple this june is one year i have 1and a half more years b4 it is mature to eat .
Am glad you're enjoying the clips C.P. 🙂 The ginger should do well if you have pineapple growing as they both like very similar growing conditions. 👍 Hope you get a nice harvest of ginger when fall rolls around. 🌱🌱 Cheers.
Thank you for your amazing video. I love to drink Ginger root & lemon tea with honey. I make my own from store bought Ginger root. Now I want to learn to grow my own.
Sounds great! I've gone the other way around. We've run out of ginger so am now using store bought root to make our ginger beer. 😕 Hope you get a great harvest.
Thank you for this very interesting video. I am living in Spain since a few years and have to try out every plant or flower I put into the soil as the climate can be very extreme here (both ways hot and cold). Growing veggies and herbs in containers seems more interesting than full soil over here. My question however is, the containers you plant them in, do you drill many holes in them to have good drainage? Thanks again.
The fabric containers I use are called Root Pouches & drain very well. You will need to drill holes in any containers you use to grow in. Will help any excess water drain away from the roots. 👍👍
This has been the best video Ive seen. Some say put in water for a while until shoots sprout but then you have to move again & disturb the roots. So it hot now in France & Im gonna plant a few & see what happens. Found a few bulbs already sprouting so no inhibitor....

Hope it grows well for you Ann Marie. 😁
This is so far, the most useful video in a smartphone , that I have watched in a whole year! Thanks very much.👍👍👍

To think that this video took months to put together is just amazing. Thank you for your careful and precise explanation. Starting a 1acre ginger farm

Best ginger video I’ve watched! Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Carolina & hope it helps you to grow a great crop. 😁👍
Glad it was helpful Alyssa. 👍
Hope you're crop gives you a great harvest.
Cheers!
That's great to heat Glenn & hope you get a decent crop mate.
Happy growing. 👍🌱

Planted ginger for the first time last year (July 2021) and since we have had a very mild Autumn I harvested them yesterday. Had a very nice crop. Will follow your tips and hope to have an even better one this year.
Hi Rob,
excellent narration and videos, I enjoyed it very much. Tomorrow, I start my planting and look forward to my mini ginger farm in my backyard. Thank you.
Hope it grows well for you Bobby.
Cheers mate. 👍
Thank you for the useful tips. I've always been unable to get good yield. I've discovered it's because I did not let the cut areas heal and have been putting in smaller portions into the soil. I will try this now and hope for a bumper crop 😂. Thank you very much 🙏🏾
Glad it was helpful Annabel & hope you get a bumper crop next time round. 😁😁👍🌱
By far and away this is the best instructive video on anything. Step by step, full details and data, easy to listen to and uncluttered information. Now I believe I fully understand the the entire process and results to expect. Please don't change the format.

Would like to do some more like this when I get the time.

Wow, this is a great video!!! I started growing ginger just because it sprouted, but I had no idea what I was doing. I tried before but it always rotted. Now I know why. I live in Los Angeles, so I can grow lots of subtropical fruits. Thank you for making this video.
Glad it's helped you some Deborah & your first harvest is a top one. . 👍

Wow! I'm grown ginger like this in Ghana. Thanks you've made it too easy. Thanks.
My pleasure & hope you have a fantastic harvest. 😊
Great video Rob. Really well laid out simple steps I will grow them right away. Thanks
Glad it helped some & hope you have a great harvest Audrey. 🌱🌱
Nice one 👍 We've saved a bundle growing our own ginger. It's still about $50 a kg/2lb here.
Happy growing.

Glad it was helpful Nerdbert. I do know a few folks that have tried to grow it way up north. The planet will grow to a point but the rhizome doesn't put on much size. Still worth a try to see how it goes. 👍

GOOD EVENING ROB,
I REALLY LOVED YOUR VIDEO.

Hello
Thanks to you, I have just harvested my 4th year of ginger and turmeric from my grow bags.

That's great to hear GB. 👍 We still have a few months to go before we start harvesting ours here as well.
Have a great one mate.
That's great Christian. Hope you get a decent amount of rhizome from the survivors.
I noticed you separated the mother rhizomes from the crop. Do you replant, eat or discard them?
The mother rhizome can be used to start another crop next season Kaarin but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter.
The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well.
Cheers.

I’m going to “gingerly” pull these out....no pun intended. 😂😂😂
