I grow it in the Pacific Northwest in pots in my kitchen. Got a small root at the grocery store (stunning that we'd have it!), watered for 8 months, and...nothing. Suddenly, one day, WHOOSH, 8 inches tall. Now it's in the kitchen, bottom-watered, divided into 4 pots...about 4 ft. tall now.

Nice one John. I love growing it here in sub tropical SE QLD Australia & find it LOVES our wicking garden beds.
You missed out the info on adding black pepper to help activate the beneficial constituents of the root when preparing it to eat. There's been a number of studies posted on it now if that helps any mate.
Cheers & keep up the good work John.

When juicing Turmeric the best cleaner to remove turmeric stains is Mr. Clean ANTIBACTERIAL! Pour some into a spray bottle and spray everything the turmeric has touched including the cutting board. Mr. Clean ANTIBACTERIAL will turn the turmeric stains red so clean all your juicer parts until you no longer see red and the stain is gone! This is the only cleaner I found to work effectively on turmeric stains!

@Zizzi's Genetics I am 70 used basic cleaners as always felt sprays perfume caught my chest. I used what my Mum did for everything, Apple Cider Vinegar, White Vinegar, bicarb of soda still do.
Sons brought spray deodorant into the house, almost a war, could always smell it!
I'm no goody two shoes, don't drink, smoke, have never drank Coca Cola, similar or diluting juices, food made from scratch, very little processed. Glad I did, COPD from passive smoking, Asthma, a litany of serious illnesses. Third son said, Ma, look at you, your a wreck you should have just done all of those things! Response, didn't like them, anyway, I prefer shoes and clothes. With 4 boys, I bought in sales only and still have majority of shoes and boots.
      Anybody size 3?
My sons fiancée is keeper of the shoes when I pop my clogs, lol. She loves them, is a half size bigger assures me she will find a good home. They come in and out of style!

Wow, Turmeric is your favorite! I've never heard you even mention them!!
Yep, its a great plant, no need for 'starts' as you said in the beginning, just plant the rhizome! I'm surprised since you say you plant them that this was the first time you tasted the leaves!
I fine chop them, then dry at 105-110 degrees so that it is still alive, I then ground it up and put it in a jar in the frig. I can then easily add a tablespoon to my smoothie with a dash of pepper of course!

Love raw turmeric in my lunch shake, add ground black pepper for added efficacy...I also add cacao powder, blueberries, 1/2 banana, fresh ginger root, cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cocoanut oil, maca powder, ashwaganda powder, cayenne, ground flaxseed, local honey or bee pollen, pea protein or whey protein powder, 50/50 chlorella, spirulina tablets, and some pom juice to add liquid. If bananas and blueberries are frozen, really stays with you!

I have a sneaking suspicion that the leaves or the flowers or some part of the plant has the ingredients needed to make the curcumin able to be utilized. Just because nature is usually pretty good at stuff and to expect a black pepper plant to be nearby and expect people to eat it at the same time is very far fetched... I
I don’t think anyone would instinctually dig in the ground and pull up in orange root, and then go find a Peppercorn and say.... “Mmmm yes, these seem lake a natural match....bet they are deeeeeelicious together!”

Opal. Fatheree Yes. Palm Springs, Ca has a very similar climate to Las Vegas (where John Kohler grows his turmeric outdoors).

Kat C yes, tumeric is very expensive wherever it is sold outside the tropics. As long as you live in a zone 8 climate you can grow them outdoors year round. Heck, I have an aunt who lives in Vancouver that grows turmeric and galangal like weeds.

Yeah, you just can't trust that John. He says all sorts of things have the highest antioxidants. Actually, it gets confusing. You see, there are many different types of antioxidants, and we need them all. Some common ones are vitamins A, C, E, catechins, lycopene, flavanols, and resveratrol. There's a lot more.
When people say that blueberries have the most antioxidants, that's not true at all. Blueberries have the most Anthocyanin antioxidants. Actually, they come in 5th, what you really want are wild blueberries. They come in #1, with twice as much antioxidant power as cultivated blueberries--but where are you going to find them?
But that's not really true either. When they say wild blueberries are #1, they're really speaking of common foods. John knows of lots of uncommon foods and wild foods that he likes to use and wild foods always have more antioxidants. He knows of foods that have more Anthocyanin than wild blueberries. So that's one antioxidant. When he says "This food has the most antioxidants of anything you can eat," he may be speaking of "any Anthocyanin you can eat" or maybe any lycopene antioxidant, etc. Or he could be talking about some other antioxidant altogether, like a rare one.
Add to that the fact that John is always learning of new plants, and that scientists and nutritionists are all always claiming different results for different tests on fruits and vegetables and leafy greens, and you can see why John might say that for many reasons why several foods have the most antioxidants.
The important point is to listen to John when he is telling you about a beneficial plant and find out if it will grow in your garden and how you can obtain it for yourself. We need to become like safari hunters, using John's youtube channel as our guide, to help us find and collect specimens of the world's most beneficial plants loaded with all sorts of different kinds of antioxidants, and place those proud specimens in our gardens to feed us and make us the epitome of healthfulness. So let us put on our safari hats.
