    Great stuff. Just to clarify - are you saying that you should be looking at the intermediate point rather than the golf ball until impact? Also do you visualise the club moving through the intermediate point or the ball travelling over it? (Or something else!) thanks

    I was curious because I’m left eye dominant so curious I went out in my backyard and took a few swings less ball of course.
    Wow, that swing felt flawless… three times in a row.
    I’m taking to the range tomorrow.
    At this point thank you
    It explains a lot!!!

      Right on! We have come a long way with studies on human vision since then and discovered it has a huge bearing on how we react to our targets! See our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and check out our “alignment reload” and “alignment reset” series of videos! Then see “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” which shows you how to deliver through this human side targeting system!

    Shawn you have the best training videos I.have ever seen and you make your teachings easy to comprehend. I really like them. On my comment below I was trying the grass cutting and I seem to have no consistent level at Impact using the swing you recommend. The target training you provide is excellent. I just cannot get the ball target out of my way. I was a marine and know about focusing on targets. The targets we focused on was looked at. The ball being down and the target to the left of my head makes it very hard to make something not in my sight picture a target. I have played about 17 years and I am a 47 handicap. I take lessons and. I am all over the course. I go places most golfers have never seen. I will continue to watch and try your advice. Thanks for taking time to answer me.

    The "position" that you display at 3:38 is crucial to pure contact. The concept of squeezing a ball against a door frame with the club is spot on. I practice doing it, then I take that same feeling to the swing. If you're not in that position at impact, it's going to be a long day at the office for certain. Great video Shawn.

    Watched this last night and used the looking at the intermediate point, then the ball technique and it was SO much easier to stay with the target. Used this today for the first time and shot 2 over on a 9 which is 4 shots better then my best 9 this year! Immediate results! Thanks for the video WIG

    Shawn, so timely is your teaching today. Lately, I have really been struggling with this occasional wandering eye/distracted eyes dilemma. I am right handed and I have discovered I am right eye dominant. If I tilt my head too much left and don't fully see the ball with my right eye, I lose focus and sometimes come out of the shot - especially with driver. If I keep my right eye on the back of the ball throughout the BS and DS with some head tilt....much better focus and result and staying with the shot and keeping my head still and behind the ball until impact. You are right- on when you say that too much technical thinking can lead to eye distraction(at least for me). Would love to hear any other thoughts you have on those of us right handed players who are also right-eye dominant. Keep up the fantastic journey down the rabbit hole of golf, Shawn!

      Study top players who are strongly right eye dominant. I would especially suggest Sorenstan. I am blind in my left eye (from childhood) and have used Sorenstan as a model. However, you can include Duval and many others on the tour. What I have found is a shorter backswing and opening the hips early through the swing than the players that are left eye dominant. It is natural to do this because of sight, but it is effective. Look at tapes of Sorenstan and you will see her do this with her irons, but with the driver (much longer swing) she allows for the time to generate speed and keeps her eyes on the ball at contact. I learned I can do this with a driver because the ball is on a tee. I also strongly recommend what Shawn has to say about alignment. This is true in spades when you are right eye dominant and right handed. I always fought aligning to myr right and coming over the top until I worked on alignment as Shawn describes in his video on this topic.

I have been coaching for more than 15 years and I never really thought that the student was club centric when he looked behind ont he back swing. Great idea to start at intermediate point and go back to ball. And Duval and Sorenstam are two of my most fav players. All that in just 8 min!? Amazing work.

    This is a great teaching! When I putt, even long ones I look at the hole and I putt much better. Haven't tried it for chips and pitches yet but now I wonder. In the last part of the video you talked about players who switch their vision to the target during the swing while keeping behind the ball. Dumb question because of the players you listed but for someone who doesn't play every day (8.9 hcp) is this a valid thing to do? Can't wait to get to the range and try it.

    Hey Shawn, another great video, do you think people who tend to look over the ball without any tilt behind are more likely to have a backswing that goes on the inside?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 роки тому +1

      No, it is a mixed bag and it depends on what they are focused on at address; are they trying to hit the ball, find a position, or are they focused on where they want to start the ball?

      @@golflessons thanks shawn, I've been playing for just over 2 years and currently have a handicap of 9. However I have a tendency to let the ball become my target. Since watching your videos on intermediate points I've never hit my irons so well. However I have somewhat fallen back in to my same rut, but I tend to find myself thinking about a neutral plane backswing, and just come straight back over the top crashing in to the ball. Even when I separate the ball and the target and swing towards my target, I find my subconscious and upper body overtaking and allowing the club to come swing back over the top. I have tried tilting the head back and this sometimes results in the best hit irons I've ever hit, but also can be dire. At a bit of a crossroad not knowing which way to go at the moment 🙈

    Dominiant eye is a factor in beginners setting up to the ball,Yes the desire to hit at the ball with the clubhead and doing no ball/hand/eye co-ordination drills are the major reasons for poor golf.
    But if I had been left eye dominant like Jack Nicklaus and many other top golfers I would have set up naturally better, in the end I developed a Monika/Duval action but had to find this out for myself as in those days i didnt have the benefit of your wisdom!

      Right eye dominance and lack of your Wisdoms are why most amateur golfers set up with the head center to forward of center and most Pros set up with their head center to right of center with Jack N being a supreme/extreme example.

    So let me get this right. I am right handed and right eye dominant, so I should not look at the ball at address but look at the grass a couple feet in front? Then look at the ball on the takeaway?

  • @patentlyJR

    Shawn where do you currently stand on taking divots? If I'm task and target oriented should I organize my set up to go a little deeper through the ground or to take as small a divot as possible while 'cutting the dandelion'? It looks like the last time you addressed this on UA-cam was 7 years ago.. :)

    To keep my swing as effortless as possible, I've been using the perpetual motion drill at the side of the golf ball which allows the club to track on plane. Then I move the machine in when I go to play the actual shot. It's a bit easier with the driver because you are never allowing the club to touch the earth...with irons, it's not so easy as there is a tendency to make contact with the ground which muddies up my club face. Cleaning the club face, sort of takes me out of that feeling I want to have seconds before playing the actual shot. Should I just do the perpetual motion above the ground and then lower everything when I go to play the shot?

    • @giardiaguy
      @giardiaguy 7 років тому

      Thomas; exact same routine as you! If you can split the difference with the irons practice drill (i.e. thin it with less grass dirt) then go to the ball slightly lower, you'll graduate that better for the actual ball swing. Shawn is so good, he can do the air swing near the ball, then lower it for ball/ground real swing. I suspect he will recommend that if possible, as you proposed. cheers.

    • @dadmaxx8641
      @dadmaxx8641 7 років тому

      Yes. That is what I've been doing. The perp motion drill is fantastic because you can use it not only to prepare yourself in the best way for the actual shot, but it makes it so easy to troubleshoot after you've hit the shot. I have had a tendency to hook the ball...that's my usual miss. The hooked shot feels way different from the perp motion swing...I feel that I've basically stalled at the ball (defaulting to it)...this causes the arms to wrap around my body (crash) and the whole swing feels short...the opposite of the perp motion feel. When I allow myself to make a full turn through and allow the arms to finish where they want (release), it's always a more desirable result in terms of distance and accuracy.

I will soon be showing my fitting at Ping and they showed me a great trick for seeing lie angle without hitting on a lie board and just regular shots on grass with a sharpie! Trace a straight line on the ball and set it vertical and at the back of it; then hit a shot to a target and see if it prints perpendicular to the grooves!! :)

    I have no left eye and the slightest movement of my head means that I lose sight of the ball. I've found an advantage in formalising the movement as did Jack Niklaus and focus on a point some inches behind the ball during the back swing. This has the effect that my downswing seems to be more in sequence eliminating in some part the tendency to come 'over-the-top'. Am I doing the right thing here.?

      Thanks for the links Shawn but I've watched most of your fine videos over and over and in fact have copies of your DVDs I've virtually worn out. I apologise for letting you down because for the life of me, nothing works. Last weekend for example, I used up 100 shots in 12 holes losing ten balls in the process - a typical round for me. I stopped counting after that for fear of losing heart and never playing again. On the driving range, I hit straight shot after shot, much to the admiration of other players but once on a golf course, the wheels come off right royally. I don't play with others because of being an embarrassment. I've had hours of tuition only to be told by several of your peers that it's all in my head. Sorry for the bad news....
