  • The demo video compares the Yamaha CP73/88 series keyboard sounds, to those of the Nord Stage 3. I own the Nord Stage 3, but ALL the sounds you hear from The Nord here, are also found in The Nord Electro 4, 5, 6, and newer.

    This is exactly the video of the Stage 3 Compact I've been waiting for. Have wanted to know how well it deals with pianos on the waterfall keys, and haven't seen any other videos that look at things in such detail. So thank you!

    I agree with some comments, I have played both, they are both great but Nord gives you that cherry on the cake in terms of sound quality. It sounds more natural, Yamaha feels a bit more synthetic but is very close. In my case, playing nord offered more fun for me. It just sounds amazing.

    I might have missed him saying it, but when he's saying it's not a truly fair comparison, and how the Nord is designed to also do organ and some synth stuff, keep in mind the Nord is MUCH more expensive.
    It seems all the Yamaha Rhodes sounds are of the "shallower" variety. They sound for sure very good, but it'd be a shame if there isnt at least one Rhodes on there with stronger lower harmonics and fundamental.

    Electric Pianos are way better on the CP73. As far as Piano sounds/samples go I can't really say which one is better, they can be tweaked and to be fair they should be compared to the real pianos. For the Organ section, yes, Nord did a good job, Yamaha should have made something like the Reface YC but it's like you said, this is a CP. Thanks for the comparison.

    • @yasu11

      I have the feeling that the epianos on the CP just "know their place" a little better (in a imagined mix), sound somewhat rounder, warmer and less harsh. I think the majority of this might be fixable with some EQ, but out of the box I too like the CPs better.

    Ben, when it comes down to the best and more realistic acoustic piano experience what's your choice between a Nord piano, CP88 and Korg Grandstage? in terms of sound & keyboard action. Thanks for the video, very detailed and helpful.

    • @benallen5967
      @benallen5967  4 роки тому +3

      J, thank you for your question. Of those you mentions, the CP88 has the best action by FAR. However, a Nord Grand would be a good choice as well. Sound wise, that is tough... they all have great piano sounds. The CP88 is excellent, but a Nord Piano has far more options for piano types. The Korg sounds great, but the action is nothing whatsoever like a real piano. Hope that helps!

    • @tuneunleashed
      @tuneunleashed 2 роки тому

      @@benallen5967 The reason why the CP88 has better action its because the CP88 isn't as versatile they did that on purpose because the Nord Stage isn't just intended for pianos it has organ so they wanted to keep it light. That's why there is the Piano and Grand series.

    • @benallen5967
      @benallen5967  2 роки тому +1

      @@tuneunleashed oh believe me, I’ve had them all. The Nord Stage 3 88 is a compromise action intentionally, so you can play synth and organ stuff on its action. It’s exactly the same idea as Kurzweil implemented in their Forte. The action is not quite piano, not quite synth, not quite organ.. but it’s OK for all those things.

    I only care about piano authenticity. I don't care about organ or synth. I am a professional jazz pianist and I scramble to make a living. I get alot of solo gigs in small places cafes restaurants etc. So I am looking for simplicity and authenticity. The fact that you aren't using 88s probably means I am in the wrong place. But I use keyboards with on-board speakers so I only have to bring a couple of neutral powered studio monitors to augment the sound and that's it no mixer no PA. I wouldn't consider a Nord for these reasons plus price is a issue.

      Márton Lesták Nord is much better. You can choose and download piano libraries you need. On yamaha you can’t do it, and you must struggle only with maybe two sets of piano samples, and you doesn’t have sympathetic resonance on yamaha, it’s deal breaking for me. Also, nord sample pianos as they sounds, and yamaha cleaning sounds of samples, non authentic at all. Also, nord is handmade and much better build quality. There’s much more things in which nord is better. But if we talks about price, there is where we stop this discussion

    Nord stage does warmer but its also twice the price (yamaha is cheap in france at espace clavier boutique)

    • @theclaverman
      @theclaverman Рік тому

      You have to remember that this is almost always the case. When you reach a certain level in quality you have to pay alot more to just get that 5-10% quality increase. The Nord does not sound twice as good as the Yamaha, but to me it sounds just that little warmer and like a litlle more authentic, but not much….But what really is not shown in this video is that with a Nord Stage you can do ALOT more than with the CP. When it comes to flexibility and programability the Yamaha (even if it sounds good) doesn’t have a chance against the Nord…and this is also reflected in the price difference, and also the reason why you see Nord Stages all over the place on TV live shows etc…. Keyboard reviewers seldom point this out, as most reviews are just about “which has the best piano sound”.. I love my Nord Stage 3, and the only keyboard which can trigger me to sell it would be a new Nord Stage 4…

    • @benallen5967
      @benallen5967  2 роки тому +1

      @@alexkorels actually, there are larger differences between the two than you might thing. The organ engine is one, but the CP works on a three section basis (Piano, EP, Other) and in advanced mode, those could all be the same. The YC has the organ engine, and then it has two Keys sections, which can be identical and have their own effects- however… the YC has slightly more capable editing options. For example, you can sweep a low pass filter on the YC. The CP doesn’t have anything like that. On the other hand, the CP has several acoustic pianos which are not available in the YC (though most are). The YC is the more versatile of the two, for sure. Same key action on both.

    I think the Nord has a slight edge with the acoustic pianos. The Nord's samples are more realistic in the low bass and and in the higher ranges. However, I think I prefer some of the EP sounds on the CP. I also think the CP has a more aesthetic and intuitive control layout. The price is right on the Yamaha too. The Nord might generally sound a little better, but not $1500 better especially considering I have zero interest in organ sounds.
    The only reservation I have with buying the Yamaha right now is the keyboard action. You seem to quite prefer the Nord's action. Ive played a Nord electro 6 with the waterfall action, and I didnt like it much. Felt too springy. So if the action on the Cp73 is worse than that, it might not be for me 😔

    • @benallen5967
      @benallen5967  5 років тому

      The CP73 action is perfectly fine if you are not expecting a piano like action... it gets the job done for EP sounds very well. I get a much much better response from the CP88, however. Nord has more than one action. You have the SW, which is more for Organ centric playing- but they have a HP model as well, which gives you a portable hammer action, though most don’t prefer that one, it is just fine for many others. My solution, is a Nord Electro or Stage, and a good weighted controller.

    What kind of speakers are you using? When I put my Nord Stage 3 through a QSC, the piano sounds sound like shit. With regard to the Yamaha CP, that’s an expensive keyboard when comparing to Yamaha P-125, which has 88 keys, is lighter, and has more piano sounds.

    • @benallen5967
      @benallen5967  4 роки тому

      Hey Mike! I use Focal Shape 65s in my studio setup, and two QSC K10.2s live, or more often, I use in ears which are Sennheiser EW IEM G4 transmitter and pack, with Westone W60 in ears. I'm not sure why you mention the P-125 here, as that is a significantly different instrument than the CP series. The sounds may be more plentiful in the P series, but construction, sound quality, and keyboard action are much much better in the CP series.
