Yeah, a gift that kept practicing for the last 20 years. When you say "a gift" you make it sound as if talent is 90% of what he does, while it's all practice and skill
Half a step only, you can understand why he only stays half a step ahead but the speed his brain works at must be insane.
It's a full step ahead. If he was half a step ahead he would not make it to the next bar. Think about it.

@@ikuep if you freestyle you know that, that’s not true. It just comes natural overtime with practice, to rhyme and continue with the flow. At least for me. I’m not on Harry Mack’s level but I’ve been freestyling for years and consider myself above intermediate level. Once you learn to freestyle at a good pace and learn filler words that you can repeat occasionally doing a freestyle it makes things much easier. I don’t really think ahead when freestyling I just go with the flow and rap about what I know.

My guy Harry doesn't even realize how much of talent that in itself is. This basically means that his vocabulary and jargon output is so second nature that its involuntary at this point. So for him, it's about the topic.
Anything possible if you put enough time and effort in. Harry has spent countless hours doing this stuff and it definitely shows. He is a true legend

This is even more Impressive than thinking far ahead.
It's not more impressive than thinking far ahead. You have to simultaneously hold what you're going to say in your head, and the further ahead you're thinking, the more you have to hold.. and the more "mental ram" (to use his words) it occupies.
What Mack does is insanely impressive, but thinking further ahead gets harder and harder because you have to remember more. Thinking half a step ahead allows you to lock in on something and release it verbally soon after.
@@bhpaak that depends on how u look at it. Being able to think and react quick enough to be able to grab on 1 thing and then go to the next thing instantly without knowing what ur going to say next is more impressive to me
I agree that it depends on how you look at it. Some of his word play, and the way he will deep-dive into some of the subjects is incredibly high-level and super impressive, even if he had been given an hour or longer to work on it. To think that he is coming up with some of that stuff right before he's throwing it out, in time and on meter, is just mind boggling.
@@bhpaak The thing is, even without thinking further, he can create full stories. That is ridiculous. I would never think that he is only thinking 1 bar ahead. But I think his mind is so trained, that his subconscious is already making these decisions in story line for him.
@super hessu They're two separate skills and he only really polished one. My brother is an excellent freestyler and can write some pretty good shit but if it came down to recording, he would prefer to freestyle his verse and just go with that. I'm pretty good at freestyling as well, but if I were to record, I would have to write because I've practiced writing more intricate and complex stuff more, and I know I would have a much higher quality verse in the end. But my brother could write a sick verse, and I could freestyle one if I had to, but we put our skill points in different skill trees lol.
This is fascinating. It’s remarkable how Harry almost never skips a beat and never misses a word. There are some fillers but never any pauses. It’s rare that someone can give a presentation or even hold a convo for several minutes straight without pausing to collect thoughts, think of the right word, or say something like “umm.”

Essentially his autonomic brain has learnt it, like learning to drive for example, really hard at the start when you have to consciously think about each element, then once learned becomes easy because those multiple tasks are delt with subconsciously. Leaving one free to think.

Chris Turner did a TED talk on it, you should check it out. I can easily see Harry doing the same. Chris basically said the same as Harry right now: He raps in the moment and once the muscle memory has been built up, it seems to be pretty easy to come up with words that rhyme, so you never have to think ahead a lot.

Okay I tried this and it worked like a charm, I was stacking rhymes that was longer than my arm.
this is honestly cooler than if he "zooms out" and sees the whole verse at once cause then during the freestyle the only thing he has to think about is breath and mouth control and the flow switch ups. the fact that he can articulate the lyric just milliseconds before he spits it with such little effort just proves how much of a lyrical genius he really is

Its not even the rhyming its the content knowledge around the words, topics or objects he is amazing at.
I love his honesty and openness. I have no intention of trying to freestyle, but i can appreciate someone of his skill / talent, openly talking about and teaching others without personal gain and just to help others with their skill.

Not only does he never pause, but he can make stories out of his rhymes at. Most people decent at it can make rhymes that sound good. Harry finds words to rhyme and uses them to tell a story that goes for many bars in the future with the same subject. That amazes me.

Dope insight Harry, this makes alot of sense now, but I guess a follow up question would be:
There have been freestyles in which your bars are all related to a particular subject or topic; almost like you're freestyling a story. What is your thought process during these freestyles?
I'm guessing you connect the dots as mentioned, but it seems you take it a step further and cleverly connect the dots to form a picture at the end. It's madly impressive and at times has me second guessing whether it was a freestyle to begin with.

Granted, so much of what you do is the result of pure talent that can't be recreated in a lab, there is something to the notion that the brilliance is two fold; one part is the linear process and natural inclination of the MC/observer, the other part is the inherent built-in brilliance of language and reality itself, and the infinite ways the two interconnect.
It's like the Universe is looking for a suitable vehicle, enticing you to bridge the gap between it's inherent beauty, fractal nature and rawness on the one hand, and your real-time cognition, memory, general knowledge base, and vocabulary, etc, on the other -making for an endless fountain of subject matter, like stepping stones for your stream of consciousness to navigate, keeping the vibes youthful, on point, and refreshed.

Believe me it's much more than studying, this gut (Harry Mack) is a lyrical genus , such a beautiful thing to watch and listen to; "Brooklyn Ocho" said it correctly and he spoke with Harry Mack, and afterwards Ocho still was not convinced when Harry spoke to him about studying; although Harry has done much studying about the culture of rap and the history, all the lingo and gestures, Harry is a professor of rap he lives and breathes rap and has a single mindedness of purpose when he raps, that is a universal gift when realized simply needs to be fine tuned. "Harry Mack has found and is realizing his dharma!!
So basically this fucking magician is now taking the time explain his magic tricks. It's hard to put into words how inherently humble and generous this man is.

This question wasn’t really a mystery if you observe the spectrum of his process. Especially the moments where he forgets a word and has to ask for it mid rap. He has no time to prepare, so that makes it evident that there is no real set up, he’s just half a step ahead of where he currently is. I actually just experimented with his process, and I can see with practice one can achieve this with great success. Doesn’t make it any less fascinating though to see behind the scenes of the wizard. To be allowed to see behind the curtain is every illusionist point of discomfort, so I appreciate HM‘s transparency.

It’s not about thinking ahead it’s about having the vocabulary and the witt and the ability to pick apart words as they come. Say the story and the rhymes will come if you understand syllables and how to make things rhyme that really shouldn’t at times as well.
