That must be it. Dre is not stupid enough, and is totally untrained - no way was he going to start something. But he might have unknowingly stepped in the wrong direction or said something. The grab was a warning - stay there, stay silent.

Since this movie is a reboot of the 1984 "Karate Kid" film with Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio, the instructor here on this film sounds a lot worse than John Kreese on the 1984 "Karate Kid" film. Perhaps the only reason why the instructor here is threatening is because, he's sticking up for his student on what he said at 1:35. When Mr. Miyagi and Daniel Larusso entered the Cobra Kai dojo, it seems like John Kreese was trying to hurry things up to get Daniel and Mr. Miyagi out.

Whilst we are learning something that is inherently violent, it is what the practitioner learns and does with it that makes the difference. 2:34 "you both came here, one of you fights now"
Mr Han probably wasn't confident he could take Master Li in a fight - but took a gamble on Dre in order to beat Master Li (as the superior Karate instructor) and also helped Dre get respect from his counterparts. Nice.

He didn’t come to fight. He came to make peace. He agreed to fight ONLY under the umbrella of an official competition. That way the arrangement would be honourable and legitimate, and not a simple grudge match. Nothing would be been gained if Mr Han beat him up.
I’m surprised how many people fail to realize this 🤔

Wow this movie got so much better now that I know what they are saying. I watched this movie so many times but I don't think I ever had subtitles. This is actually sooooo good now that I understand Jackie chan's emotions. He must be afraid of something that happened in his childhood

I feel like it'd be cool to see this tie-in to the TV series as well. Kreese (and the troops that taught him) had to learn their karate from somewhere and the style having its roots in China would be plausible. I think there are interesting story arcs that could come of it.

In KK3, Terry Silver does mention a certain "Sensei Kim sung Jan" as Kreese and Terry's Karate Teacher. One thing about Kreese's backstory that bugs me is that,
In Cobra Kai, Kreese is shown to be a bullied nobody who joined Army and learnt Karate there. But in KK1 & KK3, Kreese is said to be a Karate Champion and even an instructor in the US Army, which means he should've been an Expert prior to his enlistment. Terry Silver in KK3 says its was Sensei Kim Sung Jan who trained both him and Kreese and the latter formed Cobra Kai by combining his Karate knowledge along with his Vietnam-War experiences.

1:10 We do not train to be merciful here. Mercy is for the weak. Here, in the streets, in competition. A man confronts you, he is the enemy. An enemy deserves no mercy. What is the problem, Mr. Cheng?
