The Dark Side of Philippines

  • Being the world’s second-largest archipelago with numerous volcanoes means that the Philippines is rich in natural resources. This is why this territory was highly sought after and occupied by three foreign nations before its independence: the Spanish, the US, and the Japanese.
But the year 2022 was proven to be fruitful for the nation. Their GDP growth was up to 7.6% from only 5.6% the previous year.

I've been to the Philippines more times than I can count. While this video is mostly accurate, two things I'll point out. First, Balut is not only duck eggs. Chicken eggs are used extensively as they are much cheaper. And NO, I've never tried one. Second, I've sung the song "My Way" many times. It is a popular song sung often. Most all Filipinos don't care how you sound. They don't care if you can hold a tune or not. They love to sing and have fun and that's all that matters. But one thing will anger many Filipinos. If you act like you are better than they are. Be humble. Acknowledge them as equals and you will have a great time. Like any place there are problems. But the Philippines is a beautiful country with beautiful people.

We are used to hearing from people that life in Philippines is heavenly and ethereal. In reality, it's not. It's a place where the old saying holds cruelly true: " No money, no honey". Everything and everyone is weighed based on wealth. Those who have don't care about those who don't.

WW11, not WW1, Japanese occupation started in 1941.
The Philippines is like a collection of different countries. On one hand Manila, slums, a waste management system which isn't implemented, high crime, pollution.....With Davau at the other extreme. One of the safest places to live in the tropical East. With over 7000 island the variation is huge. Dumaguete falls somewhere in between and is a popular choice for expats to settle. Yes you have to tolerate the poor satellite reception (which will improve) and intermittent losses of power.
But you concentrate on the negative and ignore the parts that make westerners want to move there. That lack of computer time being a good case in point, you don't move there to live the same way. The slower pace is part of the ideal. Then there's escaping TikTok idiots. and schoolteachers allowing kids to 'identify as cats'
The West is in a rapid social decline, White British in the UK will be the minority ethnic group in 25 years at the present rate of immigration. The culture and history will be destroyed. Our politicians seem to think Blair's original policy makes sense because we won't pick apples?! If you want them to do a 'U' turn you'd better act now. Same with the US.
Of course there are mosquitos, pretty niaive to expect otherwise, at least the gecko's help!

Making a video about the DARK side of a Country, especially the Philippines, is not gonna make Filipinos happy.
The make of this video obviously is directing this towards foreigners like Americans and Europeans.
I see some commentators ask why you don't point out the positive sides. Well, that is not the topic in this kind of video, obviously.
And they point at Dark sides in the USA. Again, that is not the point of this video.
Balut eggs are in my eyes and opinion disgusting, but if they were dangerous to consume, people would abstain from eating them.
Loud Karaoke bars can be a blessing or a source of irritation, depending on who you are, and how far they are from your residence.
But this is not a DARK side of the Philippines. It is just what it is, take it or leave it. It is quite fun to go to such places, in my opinion, but in some places there are just too many of them.
One Dark side of this Nation is that human lives do not seem to be of the same value as in the West. Man slaughter by either machetes, knives, guns or poisoning is ratherwide spread here. Combined with too much Red Horse or Tanduay or Shabu, a jealous or insulted person can easily inflict harm and even death to his enemies.
Also politically motivated executions are quite frequent. Renting a killer to do the job for you is affordable, I have heard.
Internet speed is hardly a part of a Dark side, but yes, the lack of competition due to regulations, shows that there are ties between companies and politicians that impact the level of free market and competiton.
The speed surely depends on the area you are visiting. In the far flung provincial villages, yes, it may be very slow. Also in some city areas. But for tourists coming here for just a couple of weeks, they probably know this already.
All those cell towers are actually a dark thing, since they emit a lot of radiation that has been proven to be dangerous for humans - especially the 5 G Towers.
PLDT has a broad band cable solution if you live in an area that they serve. The problem is you need to make a contract for 3 years upon installation.
Muggings, pick pockets etc. out in the open streets are unheard of in the area where I live.
However, burglars are known to sneak into houses and properties at night. That is why having an aggressive dog is important.
I found few signs of corruption in the Davao region, so I guess we can thank Rodrigo Duterte for both safety and lack of corruption due to his rather specially strict policies while he was a Mayor.
However, there are plenty of corrupted politicians all over the Philippines. With large mansions, expensive cars and luxury items that they would not be able to afford without stealing money from somewhere in the system.
Corruption may affect some international tourists, especially in Manila, but it is mostly a problem for the locals.
You are absolutely right about taxi drivers in Manila, so beware!
The School system is NOT a Dark side in this Nation, generally speaking.
Public schools are basically free of charge, but the parents will need to pay for uniform, shoes, pencils, books, snacks etc.
They pay 260 pesos for PTA for ONE school year, as a fee for a Parent Teacher Association.
They learn to read and use Tagalog and English, following an education system that was given them by the Americans during their Colonial reign, thus preparing Filipinos for further possibilities when adults, where they can find work abroad.
And so many private schools are available for quite affordable fees, if the parents belong to the middle class. The quality of learning in these latter schools are much higher than in public schools, so if the parents can afford it, they will prefer private schools.
A Dark side of the Philippines is how people in power in some cases rule their constituents very hard, and often without an ounce of respect neither for their own Constitution of 1987, nor for Human Rights.
This was especially seen during the lockdowns and forcing of vaccines even on young children.
Science and Truth is here equal with what the Governor, Mayor or some other leaders say, and they act like they have a Monopoly on both.
Arrogant politicians are found everywhere in this World, just like mosquitos.

I had 3 balut eggs I ate in two nights, delicious with vinegar!! As for slum areas, yes a lot and many are dense houses together. I recently came back from Manila and my taxi took a short cut from the traffic to somewhat slum area. But one I noticed in these slums, people try to stay dressed clean as much as possible and put on happy faces. Not so many look depressed. And for one thing, I'd rather walk in those slum streets anytime vs 3rd Ave in Seattle, Camden NJ, or south side of Chicago USA. And note, we don't want these US criminals in the Philippines, please stay away.

I lived 2 years in the Philipines, and you forgot to mention:
    - The flooding on the streets and even inside the houses. When rain comes, the Philipines becomes a poluted pond, since the lack of a good sewer system is evident.
    - Very hot and humid weather. Forget about having four seasons or cold weather. The city side is a living oven. You must really like beaches and tropical weather to love the Philipines.
    - Mosquitoes everywhere, geckos and other insects. The Philipines is known not only for its hot weather, but the abundance of mosquitoes, house geckos, ants and other insects. Hope you're not allergic to them.
    - Rice. If you're a person that is not used to eat rice almost everyday, you'll have a bad time in the Philipines, or you'll spend a lot more buying food.

Every nation has their story… Philippines is not immune with bad and good reviews…. You have to be Pinoy and open minded to understand ones culture. The bottom line is “ Philippines is a nation of kindness”….. bad things can happen anywhere… but it’s just a speck from the silver lining that you will get from majority of Filipinos!”Welcome to Philippines” 🇵🇭❤️🙏

stop the cap. kindness? you mean kaplastikan? no thanks. i'd rather live in western countries than here, if i only have the money. as a filipino, everyone i talk to seems very stupid. that is why i have less than 10 friends. dont forget toxic positivity, i really hate that filipino attitude. "hey dont be sad, goodvibes lang!" smiling doesn't wipe your problems, you need to know when to be sad and tackle the problem. learn how to accept your countries negatives.

Wow, nice work Mr vlogger. U nailed every bit of issue on it's head. BTW, put 1 on ur head too, bec u missed 1 impt bit of info from ur scathing remarks. D Pinas doesn't have violent mass shootings, like d ones we have almost everyday here in d states. How abt school massacres? Does d pinas have it? Realize that pinas also has a gun culture like us here in d states. In pinas, u could purchase loose/unlicensed firearms for arnd $100 - in Cebu. D proliferation of unlicensed firearms in d pinas is also a major issue in d country. Yet, dyu hear abt mass shootings in d country - that happens almost everyday, like here in d states? I suggest, open ur eyes & have a balanced outlook of d pinas. Yet, for all ur negative reporting, numerous caucasian expats live in d country, particularly from d states. Tourism is on d rise. To b blunt abt everything, we r a lot better than a lot of S American countries, also better than Sudan, Syria, Iraq, & other poverty stricken countries. Let me inform u also, pinas is alrdy d call center capital of d world, beating India in its own game.

Oh BTW, the gun culture in the phil is d same as here in d US. Filipinos are legally allowed to own handguns & assault rifles.
