  • The Dark Side of Indonesia
Indonesia is an archipelago country with over 17,500 islands and 300 ethnic groups, which fall into three broad divisions: inland wet-rice cultivators such as Java, the coastal trading, farming, and fishing people such as Sumatra, and the inland societies of shifting cultivators such as the Dayak communities of Borneo.
Indonesia is now the largest economy in Southeast Asia, with a GDP of 1319.1 billion USD in 2022, which represents 0.59% of the total GDP in the world. On the other hand, the country still has room to grow in terms of its GDP per capita, ranking 5th in Southeast Asia with 4783.3 USD. This puts them just below Thailand and above Vietnam. Overall, their economy is steadily advancing with a growth of 5.03%.

Indonesia, like many other countries, faces a complex range of factors that contribute to its poverty levels. Some key reasons for poverty in Indonesia include:
    1. Unequal distribution of wealth: Wealth in Indonesia is concentrated in the hands of a few individuals and corporations, leading to income disparities and limited opportunities for the majority of the population.
    2. Limited access to education: Education plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty. However, many people in Indonesia lack access to quality education, particularly in rural areas. This limits their chances of acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to escape poverty.
    3. High population growth: Indonesia has a large and rapidly 4. Corruption and mismanagement of funds: Corruption is a major issue in Indonesia, with reports suggesting that it is widespread across various sectors, including government, judiciary, and business. This results in the misallocation of funds intended for development and poverty alleviation programs, further exacerbating poverty.
    5. Limited job opportunities: The lack of sufficient job opportunities, especially in rural areas, contributes to the high poverty rate in Indonesia. Many people are forced to work in the informal sector, where wages are low and there is no job security or access to social protections.
    6. Weak infrastructure: Inadequate infrastructure, such as poor transportation networks and limited access to clean water and electricity, hampers economic growth and development in Indonesia. This affects various industries and the overall well-being of the population.
    7. Natural disasters and environmental challenges: Indonesia is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods, which can destroy infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. Additionally, deforestation and environmental degradation have negative impacts on agriculture and the environment, affecting the rural population who heavily rely on natural resources.
    8. Lack of investments in healthcare: Limited access to healthcare services and a lack of investment in healthcare infrastructure contribute to the high incidence of diseases and poor health outcomes in Indonesia. This not only affects the quality of life but also hinders productivity and economic growth.

I live in Bali in a quiet area away from the busy tourists. Rent, travel & food is great value. You can learn the language in months, it's super easy. 10/10 would recommend.

Well if you happen to meet one of those axe-slaughterers or scooter-riding stomach-slashers I am sure that it will instantly go down to -1/10....... I mean you only have to be out of luck once in your life and that can be the end of it. Why even give it a chance to happen? For me it still seems like Russian Roulette..... Rampant poverty and corruption can bring people to commit heinous crimes.

@@3m4il What? Are you bonkers mate? Why is it hard to understand that I don't want to live in or close to some favelas in Brazil, or in South Africa, or in some weird place in Mexico or Venezuela..... Safety is measurable and some countries have statistically proven higher crime rates than others. It is well known how safe Japanese or South Korean cities are for example. I am from Germany and I can assure you you will never find any video about an event in Germany where people stop you on your scooter, stab you and rob you, or that a gang of ax-wielding thugs do the same to your car/home and if you are out of luck they also butcher you and everybody else in the house. The likelihood that something at that scale would ever happen in Germany is almost 0. And not something that you will see in the news on a regular basis..... This has nothing to do with Fort Knox..... somebody is really hypersensitive here and it's not me......

America is much more dangerous. Yes, there is crime in Indonesia. Of course. But, rare. Far more rare than in Europe and in America. Even police don't bring guns in Indonesia. And bank robbery is unknown. Homicide rate here is only 0.4. Among the lowest in the world.

when what you so called uncivilized netizen merged out and defending their country from your "Dark side" emphasizing.... that s called NATIONALISM... When you used STRONG WORD such as uncivilized netizen to address other people..then what makes you different from them? What makes you think you have better manner than the others when you talked about other people disadvantages blatantly and disrespectful. Pls remember, you may disclose the finding and fact but dont stigmatize one sample to whole population.
