Celestial spirits are basically the embodiment of the 88 modern constellations. The ones Lucy used were Aquarius (the Water-Bearer), Horologium (the Pendulum Clock) and Taurus (the Bull). You can see that, at the beginning (and counting the one she bought at ep 1), Lucy has 7 keys with her. All celestial spirits are at their most powerful in their homeworld, with their power being restricted when they are summoned by their owners. The more powerful a celestial wizard is, the more powerful the celestial spirits become outside of their homeworld.

Fairy tail OSTs are ridiculously good, they always come in at the right time. A bit of information about celestial spirit magic, Lucy has to put magic power in to open the gate and keep the gate open. And the power of the spirit also depends on the condition of the wizard. You will gradually find out more later on. In ep3 it is explain what the celestial spirits are.
