- The ocean is a big place. In this video, I will discuss the true story of naturalist William Beebe's encounter with large and mysterious creatures from the abyss and offer explanations for the incident. Take a deep breath and don't touch those fish because this will be a deep dive into the curious case of the Untouchable Bathysphere fish of 1932 - likely one of the most plausible cryptids out there.

My dad worked on a fishing boat in Alaska. Tons of bycatch was never photographed, identified, or seen again because the job was so hard nobody bothered to do anything with an “interesting fish”. I think it’s entirely likely that some of these exist, we just haven’t properly documented them yet.
That's entirely possible... an animal doesn't have to remain unseen to be undiscovered. It just needs to remain unseen by someone who'll take a picture

Also he did a few in globsters which a few of them were explained as decomposed basking sharks.

yeah sure, on the scale of the Earth the ocean is large, but compared with the universe, it's nothing. Makes you think about how if we can reasonably hypothesize that these fish exist somewhere in the ocean what prevents us from hypothesizing about extraterrestrial life existing in other parts of the universe.

Currently, a lot of superhabitable planets i.e better than Earth , have been discovered. All later deep sea diving vessels had passive built in means of an emergency ascent so that in an emergency the explorers might still be recovered on the surface. If the cable suspending that bathysphere broke, Beebe would be on a one way trip to the bottom.
Bit of a design flaw, if you ask me.
Pretty terrifying. The thought even now makes me shudder. The guts one had to have to do this, I tip my hat to him and all other early sea explorers.

Even nowadays the seas are a source of mystery and terror for a lot of people, now that we know a lot more things about them. Imagine what it would felt like to go down there in an unreliable and unsafe bathysphere, with little more than an idea of what you could find.

Im a diver. After a while you know the reefs and it gets absolutely boring. You won't find monsters even if you tried.
Hell I'm lucky enough to have seen whale sharks, sharks, rays, sea snakes and all that. But really its generally a rare occurrence and there really is nothing in there than corals and fish if you're lucky enough to live in the tropics

That, or he saw a larger breed of dragonfish that since went extinct because it was more fragile than the little ones. Or maybe is just now much more endangered, and we haven't seen them again as a result (;-;)
Not to mention, even today a LOT of notable fish sightings are still very rare and often completely accidental. I don't find it hard to believe that even in such a hokey old bathosphere, he ran into a rare fish sighting or two regardless. Luck doesn't have much to do with the expense of your equipment, lol. Think about how long we've hunted giant squid and still had so much trouble!

tbh, i think they are even more unlikely than Yeti or Bigfoot.. the jungle they live in is not that big (and are steadily reduced in size due to deforestation), and were very well-traveled (for a jungle) by the VC during the war, and by poacher/logger after that..
and while we do have the saola, which is about 1m high and 1,5m long (so fairy large size), we actually have quite a number of bone, hide, and photo of the animal by now.. nothing has been found about the bipedal cryptids, however..

Great video and I totally agree with your explanation of misidentified species.
We are now so used to the incredible deep sea footage from submersibles and rovers we forget how relatively primitive Beebe's set up was.
It was immobile with a few unidirectional viewing ports; the fused quartz viewing ports were not perfectly clear and had refraction issues,;
the lamp was comparable to a handtorch...... Add to this the dodgy ventilation and cramped restricted quarters they were in, its a wonder they saw anything clearly at all!

For whatever reason, I feel confident that those fish exist, or once existed, the way he described them. That’s just me, but if a reputable ecologist is confident in what he saw, then so am I. It’s not like those are any more outlandish that other animals known

...but the description sounds nothing like an oarfish aside from "long fish".
Anonymous Off-Brand idk I think that the way he describes the jaw is as constantly open resembles the protruding lower jaw and the “small blue legs” he describes resemble the markings down the side of the body being reflected by the light of the vessel. It may not be a perfect match, but considering the tropical climates and depths the species inhabits, it seems like a logical conclusion.
@@gabriellarichbourg102 You may be right. Plus, often times descriptions of previously unknown animals can often be slightly different than what they are like in reality. Certain fins could be mistaken for limbs, dots for eyes, spines for fins. Especially with as dark as it can get down there, using artificial lights that are rather dim, shadows can be cast and also mistaken for parts of the fish. I can't think of any specific instance as an example, as im pretty tired at the moment, but you very well may be right.
Then again, it could be just as possible that it was an entirely different species. Possibly one we have yet to rediscover and properly name or study it. Personally, I think that may be the case, as he says that the fish have the overall body shape of barracudas. Oar fish tend to be longer and more whip like, IMO, and they don't have noticeable fang like teeth, which he had pointes out.

However, all abyssal mining plans have focused on exactly those two regions because they're the most accessible to our current technology. It isn't a coincidence that many deep sea vents were discovered by mining exploration expeditions.

I literally can't imagine how many species we haven't discovered..... or never discovered, because they've died out since the beginnings of our explorations there in the 30s. I mean, jesus. We've seen trash in the marianas trench, we're absolutely already having an impact down there. I don't want to think about all the mystical (looking! but very real) creatures we've lost and are losing.
Definitely getting much better with the quality of your video
Today I found an old book about fish while rummaging through my stuff, and one of the drawn pictures caught my eye.
In a section about deep sea critters, there was a drawing of the five-lined constellation fish! I was caught off guard that they included it in this old and relatively small book, but it was a pleasant surprise. The book is not in English, and the translated name given to the fish is "deep sea discus".
I absolutely adore the way you handled this video! It was a very interesting mix of mild horror/mystery with your regular zoology videos, and I'd love to see more.

I didnt look at the length of this video and was thoroughly hurt and confused when I suddenly realized it was over. Grateful for all of your content but this low key made me sad since normally you do such lengthy content. Thank you for posting anything at all. Just my experience. Wow I really liked this one very different from the usual debunks or alternative speculative zoology scenarios created by guys like you, Darren Nash and CM Kosmen for if these creatures where real. It is interesting to hear the possibility that a cryptid as fascinating as this could have existed and or still exist in some form. Great video as always dude.

The story is fascinating and obviously there a plenty of species that haven’t been discovered or information to confirm a creature exist. It’s seems like a misjudgment in distance and size due to poor lighting, I think you covered this study with cardboard figures on one of your mothman videos, explaining where the teens were driving as fast as they could with dim headlights. As far as science knows, they most likely have seen most of these already :)

5:24 I believe those are oarfish he's describing. They're massive and very rare. But there is some fantastic footage of them. They often beach themselves in twos, which in inexplicable. I believe they're the fish that inspired stories of sea serpents.
This actually does make sense and fit the discription given. I read somewhere that most if not all of the cryptids he discribed were real animals which have since been discorvered.
