The "Make Yourself" album is imo a masterpiece. The mixing, the energy, the crazy dynamic and atmosphere changes Incubus had. Crazy good songwriting and singing. Front to back record for me
something that often goes unappreciated is that DJ Kilmore's samples are often created by the band in the studio, recorded, pressed to vinyl, then sampled back into their songs.
@@TheStandingroomonly traditionally DJs will use a mix of pre-existing records to “scratch” on the turntable. According to this commenter, the DJ in Incubus will *create* the sounds/samples himself- likely with synths and music software. THEN he puts those sounds/samples (that he created) onto a vinyl record so that he can “scratch” his own records, which adds an authenticity to the band’s overall sound.
The whole band is unrelated. I'm still convinced Brandon Boyd is one of the best vocalists. Mike creates great riffs; just interesting music in general. Both bassists are great. Dirk is amazing. And Jose while maybe not the fastest or most technical drummer makes some of the most interesting beats I've heard in rock music, has a great groove and has a hard hitting style that reminds me of Wilk from Rage.
The drummer Jose Pasrillas is so great on this entire album! His patterns can be complex, but tasteful simultaneously. (he's pretty underrated imo) I remember when I was first learning drums, I'd play along with the this whole album through in one sitting on many occasions no problem! Thanks Rick for looking at an Incubus track!
I absolutely agree, the public has stopped listening to the complexity of music and often only associate skill with speed and volume. That's what I love about this series and what Rick is doing here to isolate all of the pieces to puzzle.
I’ve been binging his drum along videos. Have to admit I’ve never paid much attention to his drumming. Those videos he’s posted makes me appreciate the complexity and variety he plays. It’s sorely missing in a lot of modern drummers.
Yup. Pretty rad. Just makes you appreciate Joe Pasillas even more when he pulls it off live. Definitely an underrated drummer and band in general for their raw musical talents.
A salute to my high school days. So many memories wrapped up in this song/album. These videos always leave me with a much greater appreciation and understanding of songs I've known for decades. It's like listening again for the first time. Thank you again Rick!
Reading the comments and seeing everyone say "Awe, I wish it was _____ song," just goes to show you how many awesome and beloved songs Incubus gave us 😎
it also shows what a pain in the ass people are. One minute into it and people are talking about other bands... it's like stfu, chill out and follow along and hopefully learn something. Lots of detail to pay attention to and things to take away. If you write songs then you should definitely pay attention.

I love how pumped up Rick gets in the heavier parts of this song! I've never been a big Incubus fan, but this was pretty cool as all of his videos are.
This is great, a few years into starting electric guitar, Einzinger was super important in my growth and acted as a bridge for me into jazz and jazz fusion. I feel many guitarists my age (30) who dug into his playing and influences (also Mars Volta at the time), ended up getting into King Crimson, Belew, electric Miles era, etc. I don’t listen to Incubus all that much now but they’ll forever be an invaluable part of my foundation and growth as a musician.
Not gonna lie, Rick: Incubus has been my favorite band for about the last twenty years -- basically since this album was released. Real glad you made this one. Keep up the great work.
Thanks again Rick for forcing me to rediscover these '90s songs I wrote off during my pretentious 'if it's not prog it sucks' period. Stellar songwriting and fantastic analysis as always - love this series!
My god Rick, Incubus is the most influential band I listened to in my early 20s and Brandon Boyd got me into singing! If you could make a series on the composition styles of artists such as Incubus, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and so on it would be absolutely INSANE. Thanks so much for this

Great video, as usual. I like how you set up the thumbnail to keep us guessing what song it’s gonna be in all your videos. I had my fingers crossed for “nowhere fast,” but I knew that was a long shot. One of my favorite channels on UA-cam.
Fuff Mcduffin I love “Nowhere Fast” (one of my favorite Incubus songs, if not my absolute favorite), but it seems he only does hit singles of bands with stems from Guitar Hero: World Tour. “Pardon Me” is from the same album, however, and has similar elements such as drum and bass verses with volume swelling seventh chords on guitar, wall of sound Alt-Rock chorus, etc. The “Steve Vai” rip-off bridge of “Nowhere Fast” is interesting, though.
Pardon Me was my go to jam when I was a kid. When I'm washin dishes, it was Pardon Me that made washing dishes so awesome. When cleaning the restroom, it was Pardon Me that made me do this mundane task. It's just an awesome song!
I feel like Incubus occupies a weird, slightly underrated space in 2000s music. This album and Morning View are probably two of my most played albums in my first car’s CD player, but for some reason they don’t jump off the page on “best of the decade” lists or anything. Really were a fantastic band though.
Incubus was my whole middle and high school, Rick!! I absolutely love hearing the isolated tracks and the in depth analysis you do it really makes me appreciate the song and band even more....keep rocking my friend!
I'm not an Incubus fan. But I still watched the whole video because I always get something out of Rick breaking down the production techniques. I also love how "into it" he gets when he's breaking stuff down for us all. You can tell he's a real music fan. I enjoy the videos of songs I like more, but I'll watch every one Rick puts up. Peace.
Consistently one of my favorite bands. I know a lot of people have opinions about their more recent work, but I still love it. In my opinion they grow and change as people so why couldn’t their music also? They are all incredibly talented. I have such good memories associated to their music.
I enjoy these episodes for so many reasons but mostly to hear the elements of the completed songs that are very subtle or lost in the mix until you know they are there.

Thanks for your efforts Rick. Besides Incubus is one of my favorite bands, I really appreciate all the time and hard work in all the videos of this series. Awesome! I'm honestly not even a huge Incubus fan, but I do have a nostalgic attachment to their first 2 albums from when I was in high school in the late 90s, and I always really liked this song. It's odd but catchy and interesting. I've never remotely delved into this band's particular songwriting habits and theories....so this one should be interesting and illuminating. This series is by far my favorite thing Rick does. Can't wait to hit play. :D
Saw them live like a month ago in Hamburg, Germany. Even though it's a promo tour for their latest album, about 40% of the setlist consisted of songs from Make Yourself, this one included. It was the second time I got to experience them live (first time was back in 2011, on a festival near Hamburg). They still haven't lost their drive, even though their last two albums turned out to be much more mellow, compared to their first three albums. The crowd went wild. Pardon Me was the perfect opener to the concert!
wah mantap.. jadi pengen tau ceritanya bisa muncul di video rick. Btw, tell Rick that I'm a big fan, his videos are really2 awesome and inspiring. Rock on!!
Great in-depth analysis, Rick. I had the same impression the first time I tried to cover its guitar line. I instantly became a fan of the band after studying the whole song. Keep up the good job!
Rick, I love your enthusiasm with how that chorus always comes back in so clean, crisp and hard on the and of 4. and the drums emphasizing "3 and a 4" in the chorus riffs. This song is really well put together , and the way you break it down is scratching my musical itch. This song is a really underestimated banger. It came out when I was 23 and I fell in love with this album !!!! Sang it drunk a million times. "The Warmth" on this album is another fav of mine. Loved incubus since the very first time I heard "New Skin" off their Science album. Very talented bunch of guys. Wish they would come out with another album with a little more of that heavy youthy angst they used to have LOL great lyrics , great vocals , great band. ...............just found you on you tube recently Rick, good stuff man!
Could you please do Beck next? He is often looked over as a stoner rocker or the guy who did Loser but he is probably one of the most eclectic musicians of the last 20 years. He's done everything from folk, country, blues to rock, hip hop, funk, electronic. Also has written one of the best breakup albums of all time in Sea Change.
I vote for the always good 'loser' (his first BIG hit) or 'Devil's Haircut' would be awesome as it's a simplistic chord progression reiterated into an oblivion of awesomeness, Plus that over emphasized snare sound in the mix is killer, or he could possibly do something more offbeat, like 'beautiful way' or 'Debra'...although given the ridiculous context of 'Debra'....I think 'Loser' or 'Devil's Haircut' would be better suited to the WMTSG series, lol.
Great video and musical explanation of the song! When I was a teen and this album came out, Incubus easily became my favorite band. Even more amazed when I learned the song was about a group of Vietnamese Buddhist monks who self immolated themselves in protest of the world and its political state.
You Mr. Rick Beato is doing a wonderful job in breaking down and explaining songs that makes them great, from a technical/professional point of view to a musical perspective at the same time, letting ordinary people who just like music, digest and appreciate it more the way this artists and musicians wanted to express their music to us. I'm an aspiring drummer but doesn't have the resources to pursue for now and earphones are already part of my ears for my daily life. That's how I love music and this really helped me understand and appreciate it more. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and professional skills, letting us add more knowledge and appreciation to music. Please don't stop this series.
Wow...these guys deserved way more credit than I ever gave them.
I really like the move he makes when he signals a chorus or drums kicking in, Rick is a rockin' dude.
Carol is Javanese/Indonesian!! Hai Carol salam kenal! Tell Rick our Band MONARKI from Indonesia is produced by Beau Hill!! It's awesome!!
MONARKI the band hi! Yes I’m from Jakarta. Salam kenal juga!
wah mantap.. jadi pengen tau ceritanya bisa muncul di video rick. Btw, tell Rick that I'm a big fan, his videos are really2 awesome and inspiring. Rock on!!
Carol Kuswanto baru mau comment nanya kak Carol dari Indo bukan? haha,, sukses trus kak 👍👍
Kereenn 👏😄
Great in-depth analysis, Rick. I had the same impression the first time I tried to cover its guitar line. I instantly became a fan of the band after studying the whole song.
Keep up the good job!
You could do incubus forever, and I'd love to watch, they have so many killer songs. Neither Of Us Can See, Nowhere Fast, Warning, Vitamin.
Back would be a GREAT one. Good Suggestion!
If you want to talk about production a far more interesting choice would be Heart is a Drum, especially with regard to how it sounds so rich.
Rick probably doesn't want the Xenu cultists breathing own his neck.
Anything from Midnight Vultures. Yep.
Great video and musical explanation of the song! When I was a teen and this album came out, Incubus easily became my favorite band. Even more amazed when I learned the song was about a group of Vietnamese Buddhist monks who self immolated themselves in protest of the world and its political state.
Love Incubus. They are real artists.
Yup!!
By the way, Incubus and this song are one of my favorites!
Sick Sad Little World will always be their masterpiece
Sick sad little world. Completely mesmerizing incubus song.
