- Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Let me just start off by saying a big thank-you to you all for all of your support with the channel!
In this video we’re going to be addressing the question: How did Harry’s Expelliarmus match Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra in the graveyard scene in the Goblet of Fire? What’s interesting about this scene is that it almost suggests that Harry is Voldemort’s equal, but that is really not the case. So, how did he contend with the dark lord himself? As we know, this scene marks the proper return of Lord Voldemort after a long hiatus. Before this point in time, Voldemort had still been trapped other, weaker forms. First, a whisp-like form, and then his rudimentary form, a form that only barely gave him a physical presence.
You see, Voldemort could not truly return until he was given a regeneration potion, an ancient dark potion that helps restore non-corporeal wizards to their bodies. It just so happened that Little Hangleton was the location of one of the most important ingredients in the potion - bone of father. The potion as a whole required 3 ingredients, bone of father, flesh of servant, and blood of foe. To create this potion, Wormtail and Barty Crouch jr helped Voldemort source these ingredients. They were able to create the potion successfully by using wormtail’s flesh, Voldemort’s father’s bone, and harry’s blood. All of the ingredients were then placed inside of a cauldron, and Voldemort’s rudimentary form was placed inside.
After assuming his new all-powerful form, Voldemort summons an array of Deatheaters and begins to address Harry. Voldemort, in typical Voldemort fashion, begins his monologue and essentially proclaims that Harry’s survival 13 years prior was purely a fluke. I think that Voldemort was doing this weird peacocking to prove to the Deatheaters that he was still powerful, and that he wouldn’t be outdone again. Or would he?
What happened next? Well, let’s start with the passage from the book:
“A jet of green light issued from Voldemorts wand just as a jet of red light blasted from Harry's - they met in midair - and suddenly Harry's wand was vibrating as though an electric charge were surging through it; his hand seized up around it; he couldn't have released it if he'd wanted to - and a narrow beam of light connected the two wands, neither red nor green, but bright, deep gold…”

I think wands choose the wizard when they have corresponding personality, not particularly because of any of the reason you listed :D
When the wand sees it and the wizard can both learn and grow together from their union, then that wizards' magic will become more powerful/controled by usage of that wand.. kind of thing.

Now, don't get me wrong, Harry was a very talented wizard and not to be trifled with. Making a full-on Patronus and then expanding it like he did in the 3rd book/film was not only improbable at the time, but very extraordinary and impressive. But I felt like how he was perceived at being "unbeatable" or "More powerful wizard of all time" is a reach.

"The one with the POWER to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches". Voldemort had the knowledge and experience, but those were unavailable to him in the Priori Incantatem battle in the Graveyard. At the final battle at Hogwarts Voldemort couldn't maneuver using apparition, as he did in his fight with Dumbledore at the Ministry, and went straight to Avada Kedavra thinking that the Elder Wand would give him the edge. In both cases the struggle came down to a contest of pure power and Harry came out on top as prophesied.

Expeliarmus is an underrated spell in my book. Its basic but it is able to disarm a wizard, leaving them unable to perform magic. I think it was meant to be that way in the story too.
Not exactly. A wizard/witch can perform wandless magic, but he/she has to be way more experienced than the person who disarmed him/her, in order to even hold on to the fight. I believe Voldy was way strong for just a disarming spell to leave him powerless.

Short answer is Harry’s wand being twinned with Voldys just negated the effect.

The relation between their wand cores didn't negate the effects of either spell. Both wands had Fawkes' feathers as cores and this resulted in the rare reverse spell effect, Priori Incantatem. If Harry had overpowered Voldemort in the graveyard Priori Incantatem, Voldemort would have been disarmed by Harry's Expelliarmus and possibly killed by his own curse rebounding, and vice versa. ✨✨✨
Also, the incantation that allows you to view the spell(s) another wand previously cast is "Prior Incantato".

I think what reversed the killing curse is a combination of who and what each person and there intent is. Being that Harry casted expelliarmus, it didnt pull or knock Vs wand away but the souls it had taken. It was all the right combination to not only block the killing curse but literally reverse its and its casters actions. You could say harry literally expelled the souls from Vs wand. Like liu kang and shan tsung haha.
The way I see it, Voldemort went out because he'd lost his focus. Petrified by the fear of sensing the death of Nagini, Voldemort, who in the very name, has always feared death, no longer had his mind on wanting to kill Harry, all he had on his mind as he held the spell was his desire not to die. Since you have to mean the unforgivable curses for them to function properly, Voldemort's curse was no longer full strength, Harry's was.
Harry's expellyarmus isn't a killing spell as much as it is a disarming spell

It’s all down to Voldemort pointing out that their wands are “twins” of a sort. It’s why he uses another wand to kill Harry in Deathly Hallows pt 2. Their wands refuse to kill the other, they can at best maim or injure each other. Obviously we know in their final duel that Harry wins because the Elder Wand is not only not obeying Voldy, but it’s actually obeying Harry instead, not to mention Nagini being killed after Harry was freed as a horcruxe. Sure it’s plot armor, but Harry was always bound to beat Voldemort due to things neither of them knew. Voldemort never forsaw any of the events of the films or books. Voldemort believed that the Elder Wand obeyed him after killing Snape. Voldemort never knew Harry himself was a horcruxe, and he literally always underestimated Harry it’s jokes. Plus throughout the films we see Harry use Expelliarmus with increasing proficiency, not to mention the sheer power of the Sacrificial Protection Lily placed on Harry.
I thought this happened because their wands were too alike to mortaly harm eachother. That's why he went after the elder wand.

Sorry for the correction, but I think Voldemort actually used another spell to force him to bow, then tried to use the Imperius Curse to make him say "No," but Harry resisted it.

Lily’s sacrifice of love and the protection she gave Harry kept him from dying three times at the hand of Voldermort. Not referring to the two instances in the Philosopher’s Stone, only the instance featured here in the graveyard and the two at the end of Deathly hHllows.

Two wands with the same wand core in a duel will make a magical orb around the two it will show all the spells they have cast and with avada kedevra it will show the people they have murdered

No it can be any spell they each use. Doesn’t matter what spell it is, just that so long as the wands are brothers (are both from the same core).
Avada kedavra is basically a single target instant kill spell. Very effective against a single target if you don’t want to wait for them to die, or give a chance of recovery. However, in my opinion, for actually murdering someone, it is the least efficient of every other spell available.
For one, you have to aim accurately to hit your target. Two, it affects a single target, and you can’t chain the effect. You have to initiate the spell every time you want to hit someone with it. Which make it possible for the target to dodge, or even block it. Three, it’s completely ineffective against horcruxes and things protected by powerful defensive magic (since Harry was protected by Lilly, AND he was a horcrux, too, there was simple no way Voldemort could have killed Harry using the killing curse. He had a two layer impenetrable shield against that spell)
Spells like sectum sempra, protego diabolica, fiend fire, while not as quick, each have properties that make it a better choice when you want to be sure your attack will work. As an added bonus, you could say that protego diabolica is an AOE (area of effect) spell with controlled single target ability. Avada kedavra may be instant, but its effectiveness is dwarfed by protego diabolica. First, you only need to initiate it once, then keep it up and control it while it’s still active. No need to initiate the spell for every target. Two, it affects everyone who enters the AOE, too, which means you are protected. Three, the longer you maintain it, the more powerful it gets.
Then there is fiend fire which can also destroy horcruxes. Makes the killing curse look like a little joke, doesn’t it?
Voldemort may have been ridiculously powerful, but had he actually spent some time to learn different spells instead of being so narcissistic and arrogant to only focus on horcruxes and Avada kedavra, well, I doubt he would have used the killing curse at all. There are just countless better options.
@@CelestisForgeUK there is no defensive magic that can protect against aveda kadevra, except a loved ones sacrifice. Also, protego diabolica is not designed as an offensive spell, its more for testing someones true alliance, technically if you simply dont walk into it it cannot hurt you . Grindewald manages to use it offensively becaus he is extremely skilled even when compared to voldemort (and also, one can aruge that the fantastic beasts series are not canonical)
@@CelestisForgeUK uh wrong. The Killing Curse IS the most efficient way to kill anyone. Yes, it's a single target spell. Yes, you have to land the curse for it to do anything. But consider this: you ALSO have to hit your target with any other spell and if you intend to kill one person, the Killing Curse is the best way to do it since it's unblockable. You can defend yourself against Fiendfyre by using either Protego or a water spell to block. Protego Diabolica is a primarily defensive spell that only became offensive since it was Grindelwald w/ the Elder Wand using it. So for an offensive spell that intends to kill an opponent, the Killing Curse actually IS the best way to go.
Moreover, the Killing Curse conveniently doesn't leave any traces of violence. This makes it harder for an investigator to identify the cause of death. It is clean, powerful, and efficient. THAT is why it's the preferred tool for killing.

- Sectumsempra can also instant kill. If the caster use it properly, the target will be seperated in many pieces, dead. If not, then the victim will suffer blood lost like Draco Malfoy has suffered when took a hit from Harry, at that time don't know what exactly Sectumsempra can do. In my opinion, Sectumsempra is working like a buff version of Diffindo, the difference is that Diffindo can't work properly like Sectumsempra and the counter-spell for Diffindo is more well-known.
- Confringo can also instant kill. Not only it is an AOE spell, but also when you target the spell at the right place, the victim will be doomed up like when you ignite a bomb inside a person.
- Protego Diabolica can also instant kill with full intent. It can throw flame toward victims, and when the flame reach the victim, the victim will be disintegrated into ash, and dead. When the spell is uncontrolled, it becomes too powerful that it requires many wizards to prevent that spell from rampage.
And now, reasons why Voldemort shouldn't use Avada Kedavra only:
- First, Harry already had 2 protections, sacrificial protection from Lily, and the unintentional horcrux. Harry body also contain a fragment of Voldemort's soul, and due to that, if Voldemort use Avada Kedavra on Harry, only that fragment soul will be doomed, and Harry will be still fine like nothing happened (Actually he has gone to Limbo, luckily he has chosen to go back).
- Second, still about the sacrificial protection. Since Harry has sacrificed himself, at the second phase of Battle of Hogwarts, Voldemort can't use Avada Kedavra on anyone at Hogwarts because the spell will likely be deflected like what happen at Potter's house at Godric's Hollow.

Its also implied in the final book that, by being a horcrux, Harry's willingness to fight back caused the horcrux in Harry to equally fight back. Every time Harry & the gang tried to destroy a horcrux, the immense dark magic that created them will become violent & retaliate. When Harry is knocked nearly unconscious on Hagrid's bike, the horcrux fights Voldemort back. But when Harry is prepared, even willing to die in the dark forest, it can't fight back

What i never really got was how voldemort died from expelliarmus. I mean its just a spell to disarm opponents and knock their wand out of their hands, in the end harry manages to hit him with it, the wand flies from his hand and he just turns into dust from that? Heck come to think about it, why's expelliarmus a red jet anyway, i dont remember that being a thing in any other instance than these beam struggle scenes, even when voldemort is using a different wand
He didn't die from the Expelliarmus, he died because Neville killed Nagini and that was the last horcrux keeping Voldemort alive, atleast thats the movie death.
I think Voldy’s wand backfired on him with his own curse. You can see the green beam run up his hand and arm.

@@vermontmike9800 the Avada Kedavra is an instant kill curse so if it was the beam he would of died instantly, but if you look at Voldemort's hand it starts getting black like Dumbledore's hand when he tried to destroy the ring. That's why I believe it was the killing of Nagini that caused his death. I could be wrong though. That's my take.
His own spell backfired on him, cause the elder wand wouldn't kill it's own legitimate owner, and he wasn't the owner.
let's not forget that Voldemort mentioned that since his wand and Harry's are twins they can't fatally hurt each other. Great content as usual 👍

It's established in the books that it wasn't the spell, or even Harry's magical prowess, that defeated Voldemort in battle. It was is outstanding courage and willingness to confront his death. That's the one area where he was leagues ahead of Voldemort.
I think the main reason why this made me think Harry was Voldemort's equal was because of how similar it looked to Dragon Ball Z's beam struggle

Voldemort was more powerful. Harry was not his equal, but just enough to contend with him. Voldemort I argue was not able to fight at full power either since that one last part of him was still in Harry. Voldemort was also likely toying with him the whole duel. Harry won because elements stacked in his favor and the apparition gave Harry the courage to fight. Voldemort was then caught off guard

Does anyone else see this as a huge problem? Because when you think about it, Lilly's Blood-Sacrifice meant that Voldemort literally could NEVER win. He might've stood a chance had he not used Harry's blood to supersede the blood protection and simply waited until Harry was 17, but then he wouldn't be able to use the regeneration potion to come back in the first place. I mean, sure he's got TONS of enemies, but who is going to be tricked like Harry was?
Really when you think about it, it means that every time Harry and Voldemort meet before their final confrontation literally has no tension at all, because Voldemort literally can't kill him.

Battle of the 7 potters.. he used (in the movie) Lucious Malfoy's wand... why didn't that work? Harry was pretty much KO or something, trying to control the flying bike and his wand was acting on it's own.. but this time Voldy's wand wasn't the twin-wand .. so... why did that fail?

This is actually explained pretty well in the book, the elderwand did not want to kill harry because he was its rightfull master, not voldemort....
It's probably the 2nd reason, also we can see Voldemort asking for other death eaters wand stating this very same issue in deathly hallows part 1. He took the wand of Malfoy.
First off: I have read the books AND seen the movies. But the movies had some inconsistencies when it came to Expelliarmus...In COS, Snape uses it on Lockhart in the dueling club demonstration, and it send Gilderoy flying. In POA, Harry uses it on Snape and it sends him flying. Later, Harry uses it on Wormtail, causing the wand to fly from Wormtail’s hand. In the rest of the movies, it did the same thing. How come in those first two instances it sent the opponent flying? Is it just a movie inconsistency or can someone explain?

As far as we know, two brother wands (ones with the same core from the same animal which gave them) cannot best one another. Hence why Voldemort and Harry's wands were 'equals' at all time when facing each other.

it was a combination of two things. one is voldermort coming back with harrys blood in the goblet of fire.. that made a living connection with the protection spell and unbound it from lily and rebound to voldermort himself prolonging it. secondly, the elder wand case. technically draco was the owner, harry disarmed him and he became the true owner. i think the wand was working against him the entire time, hence why vold wanted to break the spell connection, but the wand would never kill its own master. it backfired the spell and i really feel like made the spell harry's, its just voldermort cast it and the expulsion spelled backfired the wave. thus vold ended himself

Only two wands that are similar to each other (both cores came from the feathers of the same pheonix) could collide to each other, creating the phenomenon called Priori Incatatem. It wouldn't work for two different wands.

In the book, in Harry's and Tom's final duel as soon as the two jets collided against each other Tom's spell rebounded back to him, unlike the scene in book 4 where the jets interlinked and the souls of the last people that Tom had killed came out from where the two jets were connected.
Neither did it happen during the duel between Albus and Tom.
Read the books.

In the final duel there was no priori incantatem. However, the reason as to why they connect I can't say for certain.
In the movies jets of magic hit one another at a constant rate for effect. I do not know how it is in the books.
I can assume, however, that Voldemort's attack on Harry could be weakened due to the elder wand's allegiance. Combine this with the fact Voldemort used Harry's blood to return and it protectional qualities over Harry due to Lily's sacrifice. This could allow for Harry's and Voldemort's jet to engage one another instead of Voldemort's one overpowering Harry's.

The Elder Wand wasn’t truly Voldemort’s Harry had disarmed Draco earlier before the fight making him the new owner
The spells are also opposites of each other, one is meant to kill the other to disarm

It's kinda anticlimactic when you know about it, but from book 4 and beyond after voldemorts ressurection harry is immortal until voldemort dies, essentially making every scene/chapter where harry's life is in danger kinda dull. Cause no matter what would happen he'd just come back lol.

My understanding is that aside from Harry and Voldemort’s wand which both have the phoenix tail feather core and the Elder Wand which has Thestral hair as its core, all other wands have either unicorn hair or dragon heartstring cores. So if that was the case, shouldn’t Priori Incantatem occur more frequently if two wands with unicorn hair cores go head to head for example?
I think the hair/feathers have to be from the exact same animal for this to happen. Not too sure though

It’s because their wands shared the same core, to put it simply. All the other times it didn’t work on Harry was because Harry had a piece of Voldemorts soul living inside of him repelling the curse back towards Voldemort. Another reason is because Harry’s mothers love sacrifice shield was still attached to harry even though Voldemort was brought back with Harry’s blood. at the end in the dark forest Harry as you can see had his hands down, closed his eyes and LET Voldemort hit him with his curse.
one more point, Harry and the protroums charm. hermione "I've over herd snapes only a powerful wizard could cast such a spell of that magitude." later harry tells hermonie that he knew he could because he already did. that being stuck in his subcouncious at the time of the duel. yet still fresh in his memory of the prior year. not know how, but knowing he had to some how.
