    Instead of adding a prepoo, in a warm shower, I wet my brush and begin detangle my hair from tip to root. The gel that is already in my hair becomes hydrated and imparts the slip that I need to detangle. As I have resistance in detangling I wet my brush in with water in a warm shower. This usually takes 10 minutes and then I proceed to rinse under my shower head.

    I am feeling you on the ends feeling way more dry no matter what the cleanser is. I love that you are trying to find what’s working for YOUR hair ❤💙Say it louder for the people in the back. Thank you about the feed back on the oil pre poo/ detangling… because this has been done for centuries and it’s crazy to hear people saying it doesn’t work etc, it’s about how you are doing it and what oil are you using.😊

    You just made me realize why I love the Pattern Detangling as a leave-in, as opposed to a prepoo. You're right that it's great at making the hair curl, which is great for styling.....not so much for detangling.
    That's also why I don't exactly love the African Pride prepoo for detangling. It really causes my hair to snag after a while because it's defining my hair. Great insights!

    Finding a happy medium with cleansing has been my biggest hurdle. I’ve dealt with overcleansing to the point of dramatically raising my hair’s porosity, and I’ve battled with dehydrating product build up. My goal is to never have to endure either of those ever again, so I’m looking forward to seeing how you approach your cleansing process from here on out 🙏🏽
    If you decide to create a Patreon, I’d definitely join. Your content is so high quality and informative (a rarity in the natural hair space, IMO) that I feel like I’d get my money’s worth.

    I’m definitely trying to buy less this year, after a year of experimenting and figuring out what works best for me and finding some staple products! Otherwise, my main goal is to keep growing out as much as I can and just maintaining healthy hair 😊 I definitely learned a lot about my hair in 23 and sort of feel like I started my hair journey over fresh, which is a nice feeling.

    Sounds like a sound and well tested regimen. I've returned to hot oil pre-poo. Most often I apply to targeted areas: Perimeter, ends, and crown. Cleansing 2-3x/week works. I totally agree with "low-buy". In fact, I am only repurchasing staples on sale!🙌🏾

    Thanks for sharing your experience and reflecting on your current and future hair journey! Its great for thinking about where I want to go with mine in the future.
    Combo I had to talk about somewhere:
    By the way, since you love slip, I recently stumbled upon a LEGENDARY combo that I just had to tell someone about - So I've been kind of lazy and I haven't been deep conditioning. Instead, I use garnier's sleek & shine conditioner mixed with africa's best ultimate herbal oil and cantu kids styling custard (to be honest tho, it doesnt really feel like it does anything, I just chose it for the polyquaternium-37 in it). The oil works wonders- like the conditioner is the base and then the oil comes through with THAT SLIP; at that point, I wasn't even finger detangling because my hair detangled itself, it was smooth like butter -and the best thing is that these products are so cheap that I don't feel bad about using a bunch of product. I will say though, I've decided to do twists for a bit so I'm not sure how it would pan out as a wash & go but you neeed to try the conditioner and oil. My twists came out looking like I used a curling wand and I'm horrible at twists 😂
    And regarding leaving a conditioner that's not marketed as a leave-in in my hair, my hair dried easily (didnt feel wet but still felt moisturized). I've experimented by leaving some deep conditioners in my hair and I found that they seriously retain water in my hair despite a long period of time passing (and usually water in hair for too long damages it). Curly hair is just a different breed when it comes to conditioners tbh and my hair doesn't really mind leaving conditioners in my hair so I just save money in doing so.

    I'm going through a similar transition period around the shampoo I'm using weekly! My end just aren't feeling right and I get my hair trimmed regularly. I'm transitioning to using my moisture shampoo 2 weeks in a row then my all-purpose on the 3rd week(which I'm still deciding on which one is better for my hair), but I'm strongly considering just focusing on my scalp and not as much concentration on my ends. Also considering going back to deep conditioning weekly until my ends are back to a normal state. I love following your journey and everything you've shared has been so helpful!!!❤

    I appreciate sitting in on your thoughts for your 2024 hair. I’ve had to actually strategize regarding my hair care for 2024. My hair has grown significantly since my big chop almost 1-1/2 yrs ago (I transitioned for 6 months before the big chop) and I’ve had to take stock of what I want to “do now” know what I mean? I discovered that my hair loves petroleum jelly as a moisturizing sealant and I just trimmed my hair today….all by myself!! I did it in the way that works for me. I’m protecting my hair during the Winter months with twists under head wraps and I feel good about this decision….although my husband tells me that he’s forgotten what my hair looks like! 🤣 I’ve learned that I seriously have to moisturize my hair even though it is in twists that never see the light of day. I wear WnG throughout Spring, Summer and Fall. I went with the Anthony Dickey method for my WnG hair and found “Perfection”! I don’t use co-Wash products….I call it a “Water Wash”. Hydrating my strands, rinsing off all products…applying conditioner and leave-in and calling it a day! Best of all….I will be washing my hair with water or shampoo IN THE KITCHEN SINK! I can not stand in the shower…naked and cold….just for my hair. 🥶 Thank you for inviting us to develop our individual intentionality regarding our hair care for 2024. Well done!!! 🙂

      You too?! I cannot stand in the shower that long. I’m on well water so I don’t have a water bill but I still feel so wasteful when the shower water runs that long and being naked and wet that long standing there just grosses me out. I’m going back to the kitchen sink. And I don’t have to bend my head over. I can hold my head up and use the sprayer so the water runs downwards on my hair just like when I’m in the shower.

    Great video! I was over-cleansing with shampoos and it caused irreversible damage for me. I have fine hair that is prone to more frizz before my wash day, so I've found the balance with using a pre-wash hair mask that has more emollients/humectants alongside the oil bc it softens my hair and gives it a hydrating boost for the shampoo.
    Re-introducing light-weight oils/creams and products that have oil as a primary ingredient is also helping my hair to make sure it's not brittle during the week :) My current hair goals are embracing my tight coils and continuing to invest in plant-based products/companies that are healthy for my skin/body.

    I wear a wash n go most of the time (you can see in my video). I first had my hair cut at Hair Rules in NYC and now I maintain it on my own. The only thing is, I'm not retaining length. My fro has been about the same for a few years. I'm excited to try out some of your techniques to see if I can get over the hump.

    I'm with you on the love of mousse. I realized that I was using mousse literally every week with every set. Even though I started trying different creams I ended up feeling like they were just an extra layer of product with no real benefit for me. So I decided to just use leave-in (moisture milk) and mousse (The Doux Honey Foam) for my sets whether it's a wNg or twist out. And it has simplified styling so much..and it works great for me.

    Brittney, yes clay wash is money. It clarifies without stripping. I use a rhassoul clay that I buy on Amazon by Halal Everyday (the bag lasts forever). Over time, the clay also makes my 4c curls pop, pop, pop! It can take practice (to get the best consistency for you) but hopefully you like it!

    Great video! I just discovered damp detangling last week myself. I was tired of the shower water getting cold and decided to detangle on dry hair. I spritz a little water in it and added just a tiny bit of the Curlsmith Curl Bond treatment. I was worried becuase it had been 2 weeks since my last wash. But I ended up losing the same amount of hair that I normally lose in 1 week...half of what I expected. Going to be trying this more often for sure!

    So glad to see you talking about ur hair experiences again!
    Man u make that fable & mane oil sound so good, I've seen it on TikTok but was wary about its hype being paid sponsorships and I already have so many oils. I tried oil detangling dry because another certain stylist said it was the best thing to do. I tried it for about a month (so like 4 washes) it didn't work at all for me, it was too dry and I lost a lot of my ends. But I don't even think i've seen that AHG video about damp detangling with oil before! So I might have to try again with oil but damp. I was damp detangling with another product tho, Epres, it's another bond builder, but it's a very watery mister and has a softening effect so it's surprisingly not bad for detangling damp!! the only drawback is that it dries relatively quickly so i had to work in smaller sections than desired, but the fast drying aspect makes it great for overnight usage. Epres did actually help a bit with my heat damage, as it used to be straighter but it's a little slow to work considering the significance of my damage (took about 2 months/8 washes to see an improvement in my elasticity) and I know it's the Epres working because I've had heat damage 3x now over the last 10 years and i never saw any improvement before (back then the only thing you could do was protein treatments and grow it out, which didn't do shit for me really aside from grow new hair)
    However, I'm taking a break from buying another set of Epres vials, because I wanted to use k18. So I wanted to see how k18 reacts with my (now heat-damaged,) hair alone. (actually, I typed this out before you mentioned Epresdaunting in the video looool). That and I plan on big chopping in the spring, so I'm very interested in getting to k18 and getting at least 6 usages out of it since idk when my hair will ever be this damaged again. and hopefully it never will be lol. but I was curious to see if I could potentially find a sure way to "heal" heat damage through bond repair in the future. I hadn't Epres tried using oil with epres, but another creator I like was doing it and I was soo curious, but because I'm "testing" I held back lool
    I actually have the weirdest experience with my current shampoo (Adwoa Baomint) it used to tangle my hair up so bad (but i had like 3 bottles and the deep conditioners is very good at detangling so I didn't mind), I think because it was too moisturizing. but I want to say that ever since i got heat damage, it doesn't tangle as bad if at all. maybe it's the looser texture because I used to be very 4C, and now I've got multiple textures between 3C and 4B. but I do still plan on changing my shampoo to something else
    I'm also not that into raw oils, but I love hair oils for how soft and buttery they feel, they glide through hair very well too when formulated nicely. When it comes to trims, i'm actually trying to aim for trimming less, but I'm still trying to figure that out without getting an excessive amount of damage, which is why I'm just starting over since my split-end damage has been pretty aggressive for the last few years and I realized why (both my and my stylist's detangling brush, an EZ detangler). But basically, i havent retained any length over the last 5 years between my own and my stylists bad habits.
    I know i typed a lot, but I can't help it. not really anticipating how people will treat me aftecuttingIut my hair especially since I don't plan on telling anyone irl. they'll all just talk me out of it because my hair is longer than most girls around me but it's only about armpit length really and i want to get my hair longer, the split ends are holding me back. but there's not many girls who have hair just cut off like that so you give me a lot of courage for talking about your experience all this time, so thank you a lot for being a creator. Also hey i actually think you have the perfect kind of content for tiktok. So i'm sure you will figure out what works best for you if you ever go through with it!

    Welp, to answer your question I am currently wearing my hair straight because of the weather. It's a nice change of pace and I don't have to deal with the humidity. So I go see my stylist and she blows my hair out and I get a silk press. It usually last about 3 weeks if you take good care of it. It's been a much needed break from my wash and go, Even though I love it, lol But I have been enjoying not washing my hair every other minute. This is really giving my hair a chance to just relax and breathe... And no I don't mean relax as in a relaxer LOL But I am enjoying the silk presses. I've twicked my routine like reintroducing leave in back in 2023 and since it has gotten colder I've be prepooing . I always done it but for the past two year I kind of let it go because I felt it would make my wash day to long. The day before wash day I prepoo with warm water with aloe vera or light oil. I feel my hair likes it and I see less hair in the shower.

    I don't like detangling in the shower either. Not because it takes long for me because my hair isn't that dense; I just don't like all that hair in the tub and drain. I started pre detangling on damp hair. But I use conditioner or leave in. I even used Quiet Calm Curl Control once and I really liked my shampoo experience afterwards. I also start with a wide tooth comb, then follow up with the brush.
    As for cleansing, if you are cleansing twice a week, do you have to double cleanse each time? My understanding is double cleansing is necessary when the first round isn't sufficient.
    Lastly bond builders, I'm not so sure K18 makes a noticeable difference for me. But I have begun using Aveda's bond building leave in. They even have a bond building styling cream. I opted for the leave in because I didn't want any hold in the cream. I've been liking my hair more since I incorporated it. I use it as a leave in post conditioner not in place of conditioner like K18 suggests.

Also just started using CURLS Creamy Curl Cleanser because I wanted a gentler cleanser. It's low suds... pretty much a co-wash I guess. But I really like it. And it clumps my curls so much and feels really good.

    Love your channel! You’ve really helped me navigate the *formulated* butters and oils journey 💚. Have you tried the following combo: Kinky Curly Knot Today, She Scent It Plum Nectar & Agave Custard, and ENBBA Naturals Gel? This is my go to combo every single wash day. The shine, definition, moisture and overall lightness has seriously pushed out every other combo. I am currently using squalane oil for my finishing oil, like a pea size amount once my hair is completely dry. I’m super stoked to see your 2024 journey and as always thanks for sharing your journey

    When you said, "We've already done that. We were doing that back in the 2010s...It doesn't work, we've moved on to this." I'm assuming you were referring to the daily cowashing or the Anthony Dickey method. What have you heard about why it doesn't work? The same reasons why you say it didn't work for you? Too laborious?

    • @BrittanyMia
      @BrittanyMia  10 місяців тому +5

      I was speaking in general about anything that I try. I’ve had people tell me that it’s an old method, and that we moved onto something that works better. However, I wouldn’t have known it didn’t work for me if I didn’t try it myself. Now I know that cleansing my scalp two times a week is what I need. But even that is something that other people think is too much.
      For me, the Anthony Dickey method is too laborious. I don’t think it’s harmful. I just know that if I hate doing it, I’m going to damage my hair doing it.

    • @curlynella1011
      @curlynella1011 10 місяців тому

      Don't go long in between washes/detangling. Like I do that every 7 to 9 days. Even if it's just detangling and putting my hair back in a style and not washing. The more shedded hair, the most complications with detangling. Detangle before washing. Use slippery products like a conditioner before shampooing to detangle first. Even if you wash every two weeks, always re moisturize and style after a week to get some of those shedded hair out

    • @CakednBaked1

      I have med-high dense hair. Try starting by working your hair in sections. Take your time detangling. I like to start off by finger detangling (it helps to separate knots and get rid of shed hair).

      Noted. I will also apply this to my regimen. I just dread having to detangle. I know it is part of the process though. I am not trying to complain, believe me. I just want to simplify things that way I won't feel overwhelmed. Thanks so much for your feedback. I appreciate it. @@CakednBaked1

    I would just caution - too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily good. There are reports of folks that have hair damage from over-use of bond builders. Especially in terms of using all of the products of the line. I’ve seen some examples presented by stylists on IG. If your hair is in overall good health, I think that’s the risk. I have bleached hair, but still only use Olaplex once a month, with a protein conditioner every other week. For me, that’s been more than enough, to the point that my hair is doing so well that I’m growing out my short tapered cut.

      Honestly, it went by really fast because I was doing it so much that my hair wasn’t tangled or anything. It became a part of my shower routine. I would just wake up an hour earlier so that I would have time to wash and then sit under the dryer. I just hated touching my hair every day lol it felt like a chore. I stopped looking forward to it, and started dreading it around day three and four. I was like Yep, this ain’t gonna work for me.

    I use epres and it’s really good. Very easy to use, and you can use it overnight. And I find that I really did not need to spray a lot into my hair to get a coated. Just suction my hair and sprayed it and really massaged it into my scalp put a cap on and went about my day until I was ready to wash it. I think it’s a lot better than The olapex Just cause I can go about my day while using it. It works really well for my lifestyle. I think you might like it. 22:01

    • @BrittanyMia
      @BrittanyMia  10 місяців тому

      I have the Innersense true enlightenment scalp scrub, but the product that I purchased this month is the Amika Reset. I apply this to my scalp to have a pre-poo that is sudsy on my scalp after I’ve let the oil sit for hours. It sudses up really well and it does a nice job of cleansing my scalp.
      I hadn’t really thought about apple cider vinegar tonics, so thank you for pointing that out. I’ll definitely look into them! Any suggestions?

    Hi Brittany I’m sorry that when you big chopped your hair in 2020 that people were mean to you 😢. When you say people were “mean” to you do you mean that they treated you differently because you have short hair?

    • @BrittanyMia
      @BrittanyMia  10 місяців тому +3

      Basically, people who liked me because of my hair are no longer are in my life. It really illustrated how big of a role hair and the concept of beauty plays in how you’re treated.
      People would stare at me a little too long with weird faces, I noticed people weren’t as kind as when my hair was longer. I had people who were close to me say nasty things. It just showed me a lot about the perception of beauty and how that plays out in the real world treatment of a person.
