DTH was the first dance company I'd ever seen as a child, and saw them on tour religiously until I graduated college. Those moments watching the company's extraordinary dancers in motion remain some of the most magical in my life and Virginia Johnson as "Creole Giselle" remains a revelation to this day.
I thank ABC for doing this brief story on these outstanding ballerinas and Mr. Mitchell giving them the opportunity and starting DTH. One of the best companies ever! Beautiful dancing. The whole company what grace and form and of course technique. All the pioneering principals and the entire company, what can you say just but bravo to all! Thanks to Ms. Johnson for carrying on the touch with DTH today.
This is superb journalism. Mr. Mitchell was ahead of his time, ballet was a bridge, they literally got the attention of folks and expanded their minds. Thanks Queens
I took classes in that Studio. I walked from my cousins house on 146th street. They pulled my calve muscles an I couldn’t Walk of flex for two days, but once that Happened I was good To go from that point on. Although I didn’t Continue( personal reasons) it helped me From there on out. Knew Keith from boston
To have been and still be here to see these incredible black royal sisters once again brings back the memory of the beauty they showed and exemplified at DTH during a time when the same spirit of haters which permeates the air even more openly today still existed, and yet they carried themselves with the regal self assurance but humble attitude which one who knows they are of royal blood displays still today! These beautiful black ballerinas are living proof that the blessings of The Most High are without repentance and also that black truly truly does not crack. I am so happy to be a part of the legacy which Mr. Mitchell tirelessly fought for but shouldn't have had to...proving what was already a known fact that we black folks can do and do do it all well even when the world tries to stand in our way or have their knees on our necks! Like the Phoenix, we always rise because He Who chose us above all others to be His personal possession wishes it so! Hallelu Ayah Ashar Ayah!
I had a friend who was with DTH in the 80's I sued to go to City center every night I saw Virginia Johnson Stephanie Dabney so many others, I danced with NYC ballet but I loved DTH in some ways more, I loved Stephanie's portrayal of Firebird more the] any other. I loved Virginia Johnson in general.
