  • June 30th - July 4th 2022: I backpacked out of the McGee Creek trailhead and finished at Devils Postpile National Monument. The trip took me up by Big McGee Lake, over McGee Pass into the upper Fish Creek drainage, then down to the JMT/PCT, up to Lake Virginia, and finally past Purple Lake and the Red Cones down to Devils Postpile. All 4 nights I was camped above 10,300, and all 4 nights ended up being super clear and calm. I got lucky with some amazing weather and conditions, besides it being a bit buggy at times with gangs of mosquitos. Got some amazing views of the Silver Divide and out toward the Ritter Range and some of the peaks along the southern border of Yosemite. Saw a bunch of stunning lakes, lakelets, ponds, streams, meadows, wildflowers... all classic high country Sierra Nevada scenery. I think I hiked about 45 miles over the course of the 5 days. Thanks for watching! - mammothjoe

I'll be replicating the first part of your trip, to Big McGee Lake, in a few weeks, but will be turning onto a different trail there. In GaiaGPS I laid out your route, which the app measured as 33 miles--which looks about right, since your last day of 17 miles seems to be about half the total distance. I'm sure it felt like 45 miles though! I appreciate your allowing ambient sounds largely to speak for themselves. Too many hikers overlay (often inappropriate) music throughout their videos, but I think the sound of the wind, water, and wildlife almost always is preferable--and more interesting. Best wishes on your next hike--be sure to film it!

Nice! Have a great time out there. I'm sure if I hiked this route directly from point to point it would have been 33 miles, but I since I was going off trail in some areas to explore the alpine basins I ended up recording a total of 45 miles on my GPS device. As for the sounds I agree, sometimes its nice to have a little bit of music or something but if there are some great sounds of nature then those are always better!

I love all the water features out in the mountains too, each one with its own unique and interesting attributes. Hope you make it up here to the Sierra soon and get to explore some trails and see some beautiful lakes! Thanks for watching.
