  • Sabrina Basin is an amazing place to spend a few nights! Or even to venture into as a longer day hike. Either way, be ready to gain at least 1,500 feet from Sabrina Reservoir to get to the first of many lakes. This is the price of entry, but one worth your while. There are some spectacular alpine areas back there, with views of glacially fed turquoise lakes and towering 13,000ft peaks. The peaks of Mount Darwin, Haeckel, and Powell are all lofty, ragged, and impressive. Observe a variety of lakes, each with its own unique characteristics and beauty, including Hungry Packer, Baboon, Blue, Midnight, Moonlight, Echo, Dingleberry, and Emerald Lakes. The areas between the lakes are just as attractive, with many lush green meadows and wildflower-lined streams, as well as ponds and lakelets, cascades and small waterfalls. The waters and wildflowers were in abundance while I was out there, with the lupine and shooting star flowers in their blossoming peak. This is just one of many spectacular areas of the Sierra Nevada. And it seems as thought the higher you go the better it gets. When its all said and done though, make sure to finish the backpacking trip with a reward at Mountain Rambler Brewery in Bishop, the best place to treat yourself after an Eastern Sierra day hike or backpacking trip. All filming and editing in this video by myself, Joe Tomkins ( mammothjoe ). Thank you for reading and watching. Happy trails!

Great job and love the music choices. Did this hike about 4 years ago. Gotta get back again soon.

Great story and video. Please be a geographer and share with us names of basins and lakes. Sabrina area and Dusy Basin are amazing high Sierra terrain. James

Have done this trip several times and will be back in the area this summer. The acoustic guitar is peaceful and appropriate.

Beautiful video, but I can’t believe complete ignoring the fantastic peaks of the Evolutions! Particularly, one shot the first morning and that was Mt Haeckel, 13,418 ft.-one of the most spectacular of all Sierra peaks! You got a great shot of it and Fiske among others!

Beautiful. What month did you do this trip? Also, how were the mosquitoes?

This was Jul 19-22. There were some mosquitos around the lakes/ponds/streams, more prevalent in late afternoon, but thankfully weren't too bad. I think it might have been just a little after the peak of their swarms.

It took me about an hour, hour and a half. Stopped for a break on the way. Found a faint trail along the creek connecting the two lakes so that helped.

Really nice video for an overview of this area! Do you think it would be too cold to make this trip in mid May? This year there might be a lot of snow still...?
