  • Looking for adventure and camping in Big Sur? Explore these 2 out of the way places to see this popular Northern California destination from a new perspective! In this trip, we go off-roading on The Old Coast Road, a beautiful dirt trail that twists through the coastal mountains. Then, we’ll camp out on Prewitt Ridge, a backcountry campsite that towers above the ocean and fog and is free to camp at.
This is the FIRST in a 3 part series exploring the hidden sides of Big Sur, a place that’s totally captured my imagination! Can't wait to share more with you.

Show love on the Old Coast Road by respecting private property.
And on Prewitt Ridge, be sure to pack out what you pack in. You must handle your human waste well. I've heard lots of reports of 💩 on the side of the road. Let's leave it BETTER than we found it!

Hi guys, great video, I am a Big Sur local and I just wanted to say to everyone planning to take this trip to please please please remember that there are absolutely no fires allowed on these back roads. so many wildfires have been started by tourists doing this exact same thing and I have personally almost lost my home several times. Have fun, but please remember that people live here!

I was born in Santa Cruz and thank you for showing us sites. I was too poor to own a vehicle (being disabled) for about 10 years. Now I have one I want to see stuff. Some guy on one of these type of videos showed a beach called Shark fin beach I had never seen or heard about in my 50 years so I want to say thanks for showing how to do stuff for those of us not privileged enough to have been doing this forever. That said my friends who live up near "last chance" tell me not of cows but Pattie was on a dirt road and Mr. Man the Mountain Lion wanted to cross infront of her and this dude was so casual he took his sweet time and he was so big he filled most of the tiny dirt path. He knows he's a king and a boss. Panther beach is another place up 1 and my friend Buck found a panther or Mountain lion jaw!!! I never knew they were so badass they would eat the left overs from the sharks. On the beach like seals or parts of elephant seals. As a woman going alone what advice can you give me for safety from the male humans. I only have paper spray and phones don't work out there.

There BigSur. Ya'll might think about moving some creeks down through the Valley and plan a restoration erosion to sea. Its beautiful. Needs planned natural restoring these valley creeks going downhill and nightime crop kind with headlamps to take up some human energy budget losses. And dolars heard cylinders for freezes. Instead of fuel cylinders heat. Power some batteries in the back of long hauling trucks and plug em into in the heaters. Waterwheel sometimes.

Told a ranger if I may enter, but said no because the road were damaged due to a storm but we are in the summer no storm. This was due because the locals started complaining about the traffic, using wild fires and supposibly the dangers that freedom is to some people. Thanks! I think your camper could make it just fine. I just checked the Monterey Ranger District website, and all the dirt roads along the coast, as well as Nacimiento Rd are closed. If you go before the rangers open them, you risk a hefty fine.
I recommend another site called “The Indians” which I believe is still open. Take Del Venturi Rd northwest of Fort Hunter Ligget over 2 shallow water crossings until you reach the sign for Los Padres National Forest. Plenty of dispersed camping and fascinating geography there. No 4WD necessary.

I love the video! I have a 4x4 truck with a Lance Camper. Do I need to worry about the height of my rig when going through the Old Coast Road?

    Hi brooks,
Do think a high top van have enough roof clearance? Obviously 4x4 large tire & suspension

your video was entertaining, I looked up Prewitt Ridge Campground and Google says it’s closed. Will it open soon and if not is there another campsite that parallels its ocean view? Off grid on rough fire roads is fine, I actually prefer it.

Hi there, a southerner here and I’d like to know if the Hwy 1 is still closed because of the mud slide? Also, did you have any trouble driving off road? Would a sprinter van be able to travel that road? Thank you, enjoyed the video!

Hey Brooks awesome videos bro! How steep are those edges on the way up next to the drop off while driving? My wife is not a big fan of steep drop offs but I would love to do this if its not entirely scary for her!

Awesome video!! My now married last name is Prewitt so I was stoked about the idea of bringing my husband to Prewitt Ridge, I Google mapped it and it looks like every road to get there has been closed. Any reason?? I’d love to take him here for our anniversary in June if the road is open or you know what’s going on? Thank you! ☺️

      The word is disingenuous...
Mama always said if you got nothing nice to say then don’t say shit !
This applies to you Alexander. My guess is your always trying to read and judge others to make you feel better about yourself
