KrazyOkamii It's not his fault. This is spoiling part 2 a little, but NOBODY on the game's dev team was shown a design document. Nobody knew what place their levels would have in the game; probably not even what mechanics the game would have. Nobody knew the story either- not even the voice actors.
KrazyOkamii first off, yes I worked as a compiler for models on the project, at the time I didn't know that he stole assets for the game. Second off, no I don't hate half-life in fact it's the opposite I actually love half-life. The first game was very fun to play, I haven't finished the second game but I really should finish the second game. UniqueSKD to answer your question, I felt quite betrayed when I found out that all these assets were stolen. I also felt disappointed at the director, Berkan for lying about the assets and for the bad directing for this project. He was a nice guy when I talked to him on skype though, but sometimes behavior or attitudes won't fix the game.

You don't even know what your goal is; much less how to accomplish it.
I can put it more succinctly: In Mission Impossible you know WHAT to do, just not HOW to do it. In Hunt Down the Freeman you know absolutely nothing. You are dropped into a map to wander around until you stumble across an exit with no guidance.
What a horrible introduction to half life for you. That sucks! You should really play the original half life games, they're nowhere near as bad as this.

You're completely missing the point. I didn't care that the guy is Asian and doesn't have an accent (I didn't even know the character was Asian because nothing in the game itself implies it) the point was they hired a British Guy with a well defined English accent to do an American accent for an Asian character; two nationalities that are as far removed from IHE's speaking voice as you can get. It's multiple levels of "what were they thinking?"
As a person who's played Half-Life series, I'd like to put my 2 cents in: 1. Why are Combine forces attacking your squad RIGHT after president announces surrender? The war is literally over and yet these dipshits attack you for no reason at all, forcing the protagonist and other characters into active resistance. Now you could say maybe this particular group of Combine soldiers didn't know humanity surrendered yet, but aren't the Combine supposed to be extremely coordinated and technologically advanced. Now you could also say that the scene was to show how the Combine secretely get rid of human military just in case, but the game never makes it clear, and in Half-Life 2 (and even the later stages of HDTF) it's clearly shown that the Combine are using Earth's military forces and even conscripting citizens, to use as police force to keep humanity in check, and as cannon fodder in their invasions on other worlds. 2. The green lightning bolt creatures are called vortigaunts, and they were frequent (but much weaker) enemies in HL1, while in HL2 they are allies, as it is revealed that the Combine are a common enemy for them and human resistance. So why is it that in HDTF vortigaunts are apparently fighting alongside the Combine forces?
This game is about as incompetently made as a crappy RPG I made. The difference is that I made that game in middle school entirely on my own, while Hunt Down the Freeman was made by an entire team of developers and was released with a $25 price tag.
That would certainly explain a lot of this game's problems. Still, at least many of the developers have since spoken out about the game's quality and urged people not to buy it.
Some of the scripted events that not worked for you are worked in some other people's videos and vice versa. That means either the game is badly optimised and completely breaks on some PCs or the scripting constantly gets fixed and broken because of the updates.
Oh yeah, he did mention something about that didn't he. Well, hope it won't keep him from pumping out more episodes for too long. In the meantime though I could still watch the first series all over again to pass the time. It really is one of the best shows on the internet. So clever and well made. I kind of wish that 'Freeman Universe; trailer wasn't an joke, you know. To see (or rather hear) Freeman in other first person games would be amazing. Now that he's technically unemployed from Black Mesa it would be awesome to have Freeman trying out different jobs in other video games. Imagine him in Doom, or F.E.A.R!

I played only first released version cracked by Codex (I'm not going to support these scammers) but devs still did not patched this game properly and it still contain a lot of bugs. I'm huge fan of Half-Life games and Hunt Down the Freeman is an insult to all self-respecting fans of the series. I agree with conclusion of this video, Valve should be ashamed that let developers to release this bag of excrements. PS Half-Life 3 never been developed, Valve JDGAF, therefore they have left the story with cliffhanger. Many years later former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw revealed outline of history of Episode Three which also ends with another cliffhanger. This story published by Marc Laidlaw is called Epistle Three and based on this is now created fan made game Project Borealis in Unreal Engine 4.
I want to develop a game of my own. As odd as it sounds, I'm glad this abortion of a game was released; it helped me realize what made Half Life 2 great, and got me thinking about why I enjoyed many shooters and didn't care for others.
I'm gonna forgive you for this because you never played Half-life, but you didn't notice that the knife sound is LITERALLY the Crowbar sound from Half-life 2, no changes made, even some of the guns just use the sounds from Half-life 2, for example: The pistol reload, it still has the Half-life 2 reload sound, so it doesn't match up at all.
And the worst part is that this guy seems to be wandering about these stages for no real reason. I thought he was hunting down Gordon here; he just seems to have... forgotten about that???
FieryExplosion You spend pretty much the entire first half of the game just running away from the Combine. Freeman and the Hunt thereof doesn't even factor into the plot again until- at most- the last third or so of the story.
I still think this might be the worst thing covered on The Dark Side of Steam. At least Digital Homicide and the others didn't destroy a good game by making their own version.
To be fair, the thing about "nothing being explained" that you ranted about at the beginning is because this is a game marketed towards *fans* of Half-Life. The people intended to play this game already know all the backstory. It follows the same logic as fanfiction: there is no point in huge exposition of the characters and important locations, ideas, etc., - because anyone who reads it already knows it all. All it will do is bore the reader, or in this case, the player. Of course, it won't make any sense to somebody who's never played Half-Life - it's not supposed to. You wouldn't expect to understand anything about Twilight or Spyro the Dragon fanfiction if you've never dipped your toes into the damn things. This is a game for fans, by fans. Of course, that doesn't excuse it from its... *faults.*
"It's for fans" is a very weak argument to defend not explaining anything. There are lots of games where knowledge of previous entries is required but you can still get the gist of the story even if you haven't played those previous entries.
@@elin111 That's true. Half-Life 2 is a perfect example; you don't need to know much at all about Half-Life to enjoy it - but Valve designed it as such on purpose. HL2 is intended to be a game most can pick up and play without knowing the full story. That, and Valve's writing team is eons beyond this game's, so that would help in any case. But with this thing, I doubt they were appealing at all to newcomers. It is, from the gameplay I've seen, intended to be a sort of fanfiction of the HL universe in the form of a game. As such, they were marketing towards the veterans of the fandom - because who else would understand the details on the store page? Well, I hope they were going for the seasoned players...
It's shame about this "game". It was ment to be an SFM Series but they got too imaginative. They had no idea how to manage a company or develop a game and it killed the project. They had ideas for meeting Father Gregori during the starting hours of Ravenholm's destruction, An much more interesting Ending about Mitchel forgiving Freeman and a lot of removed ideas such as new enemies and monsters but they had no idea how to make stuff like that with the time and money they had.
There's a demo floating around that displays an early idea for the game where Mitchell had the ability to see a dead person's last moments leading up to their demise. Which sounds immensely interesting as a way of worldbuilding.
Archarin Unfortunately the worst levels are in this video. Part 2 is going to have a large focus on the story, which makes absolutely no sense whether you've played Half Life or not.
BTW, you may be thinking that having a tutorial play out like a boot camp is a bit too clever for this game. That's because it was ripped off from Half Life Opposing Force. Classy.

So why is it that in HDTF vortigaunts are apparently fighting alongside the Combine forces?
This game is about as incompetently made as a crappy RPG I made. The difference is that I made that game in middle school entirely on my own, while Hunt Down the Freeman was made by an entire team of developers and was released with a $25 price tag.

That would certainly explain a lot of this game's problems. Still, at least many of the developers have since spoken out about the game's quality and urged people not to buy it.

Some of the scripted events that not worked for you are worked in some other people's videos and vice versa. That means either the game is badly optimised and completely breaks on some PCs or the scripting constantly gets fixed and broken because of the updates.
Jadow, I think Freeman's mind might help you with HL1's story.

Oh yeah, he did mention something about that didn't he. Well, hope it won't keep him from pumping out more episodes for too long. In the meantime though I could still watch the first series all over again to pass the time. It really is one of the best shows on the internet. So clever and well made.
I kind of wish that 'Freeman Universe; trailer wasn't an joke, you know. To see (or rather hear) Freeman in other first person games would be amazing. Now that he's technically unemployed from Black Mesa it would be awesome to have Freeman trying out different jobs in other video games. Imagine him in Doom, or F.E.A.R!

Thanks for reviewing this game. I played only first released version cracked by Codex (I'm not going to support these scammers) but devs still did not patched this game properly and it still contain a lot of bugs. I'm huge fan of Half-Life games and Hunt Down the Freeman is an insult to all self-respecting fans of the series. I agree with conclusion of this video, Valve should be ashamed that let developers to release this bag of excrements.
PS Half-Life 3 never been developed, Valve JDGAF, therefore they have left the story with cliffhanger. Many years later former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw revealed outline of history of Episode Three which also ends with another cliffhanger. This story published by Marc Laidlaw is called Epistle Three and based on this is now created fan made game Project Borealis in Unreal Engine 4.
I want to develop a game of my own. As odd as it sounds, I'm glad this abortion of a game was released; it helped me realize what made Half Life 2 great, and got me thinking about why I enjoyed many shooters and didn't care for others.
I'm gonna forgive you for this because you never played Half-life, but you didn't notice that the knife sound is LITERALLY the Crowbar sound from Half-life 2, no changes made, even some of the guns just use the sounds from Half-life 2, for example: The pistol reload, it still has the Half-life 2 reload sound, so it doesn't match up at all.

FieryExplosion You spend pretty much the entire first half of the game just running away from the Combine. Freeman and the Hunt thereof doesn't even factor into the plot again until- at most- the last third or so of the story.

I still think this might be the worst thing covered on The Dark Side of Steam. At least Digital Homicide and the others didn't destroy a good game by making their own version.
This is the worst first-person shooter I've ever played.
To be fair, the thing about "nothing being explained" that you ranted about at the beginning is because this is a game marketed towards *fans* of Half-Life. The people intended to play this game already know all the backstory.
It follows the same logic as fanfiction: there is no point in huge exposition of the characters and important locations, ideas, etc., - because anyone who reads it already knows it all. All it will do is bore the reader, or in this case, the player. Of course, it won't make any sense to somebody who's never played Half-Life - it's not supposed to. You wouldn't expect to understand anything about Twilight or Spyro the Dragon fanfiction if you've never dipped your toes into the damn things. This is a game for fans, by fans.
Of course, that doesn't excuse it from its... *faults.*
"It's for fans" is a very weak argument to defend not explaining anything. There are lots of games where knowledge of previous entries is required but you can still get the gist of the story even if you haven't played those previous entries.
@@elin111 That's true. Half-Life 2 is a perfect example; you don't need to know much at all about Half-Life to enjoy it - but Valve designed it as such on purpose. HL2 is intended to be a game most can pick up and play without knowing the full story. That, and Valve's writing team is eons beyond this game's, so that would help in any case.
But with this thing, I doubt they were appealing at all to newcomers. It is, from the gameplay I've seen, intended to be a sort of fanfiction of the HL universe in the form of a game. As such, they were marketing towards the veterans of the fandom - because who else would understand the details on the store page?
Well, I hope they were going for the seasoned players...

It's shame about this "game". It was ment to be an SFM Series but they got too imaginative. They had no idea how to manage a company or develop a game and it killed the project. They had ideas for meeting Father Gregori during the starting hours of Ravenholm's destruction, An much more interesting Ending about Mitchel forgiving Freeman and a lot of removed ideas such as new enemies and monsters but they had no idea how to make stuff like that with the time and money they had.
There's a demo floating around that displays an early idea for the game where Mitchell had the ability to see a dead person's last moments leading up to their demise. Which sounds immensely interesting as a way of worldbuilding.

Archarin Unfortunately the worst levels are in this video. Part 2 is going to have a large focus on the story, which makes absolutely no sense whether you've played Half Life or not.

I’m a fan of the Half Life series but this game is the biggest disapointment of all time. Seriously, this game is not like the Half Life games. I swear they try so hard to be Half Life 3 but failed so hard in many levels
