This game reminds me of other bad games reviewed on this channel. The overly delayed publish/release date (Duke Nukem Forever), the contrived storyline filled with vague and unnecessary exposition in an attempt to buildup lore (The Order: 1886 and Drake of the 99 Dragons), the messy hybrid combat style (Ride to Hell: Retribution), unbalanced insta-kill enemies (Rambo: The Video Game), and an over the top concept that takes itself way too seriously (Hunt Down the Freeman and The Quiet Man).

That whole thing with Big Mouse being talked about in spite of being dead since the start of the game made think of something. I bet it would really be funny if there was this guy that was being hyped up as the main villain of the game, but you then find out that you killed him as the tutorial boss.
What would a sequel for Devil's Third even be called? Devil's Third Two? Devil's Fourth? Angel's First? Devil's First? Maybe Devil's Third the Squeakquel?
The main character looks like a cross between Duke Nukem and Lo Wang, two of the most over the top fps characters of all time. He should be fighting aliens or demons or something, not regular ass soldiers!
Won't lie, if this actually had a cohesive story, it'd be a cool setting. In my opinion there aren't that many games that touch on the metal gear-esq type of setting with modern military and fantastical elements.
This game wants to be Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance but without including the fun game play, memorable characters, awesome soundtrack, or pretty much anything that made Rising good.

Yup; Nintendo grabbed up two games fishing for publishers. Bayonetta 2 was a spectacular game and resulted in one of my favorite Smash Bros characters getting into the roster. Devil's Third... was so bad Nintendo tried to get out of publishing it entirely.
I was not aware of that. I find it strange this Russian terrorist group is led by a Spaniard (and Kumano is Japanese) and prominently features an African guy.
From everything in the review it seemed to me that the Spanish angle (well, Spanish from the americas anyway) was pushed quite a bit, what with cabrón and the usual range of boring insults people usually pick for videogames. If you think yanqui is bad, just wait till you learn that rather than using "blue jeans" like all other normal people, the Spanish speakers have the word "bluyín". I really wish they stopped "hispanicising" every bloody thing honestly. Kudos for the review though. I was sad to see how low Itagaki had fallen, ninja gaiden Black still stands as one of the best action games of all time. Oh well.
I find it funny how the main character Ivan never wears a shirt. I guess he's trying to show off his cool tattoos but still. That's doesn't really make him look threatening.
Maybe get the game right first before even thinking about doing other things with it. The fact that the story has more holes than swiss cheese because they were going to elaborate on it more in mangas and animes is stupid. That kind of stuff should never be required to understand a story but to elaborate on it further.
I'm guessing it's an artifact from earlier in the game's development: there were supposed to be three protagonists with three different styles of gameplay. But then they pulled that stuff out I'm guessing the name was too set in and high-profile to change.

No wonder the melee combat made me think of Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge. Thanks for the background info on the game, it really helped me understand why it looks like an awkward and clumsy waltz between new IP and movie tie in garbage.
Honestly Nintendo should have taken up development and just scrapped everything and made it an online game with some plot like Siege. That would have been better.

Third fun fact (I'm just full of info today, aren't I?): Ludmilla's suit is what let's her become invisible. In other words, I think Ludmilla is working off the same suit principle as Black Widow: sexy, yet practical. ...why am I trying to justify things in Devil's Third? Also, Devil's Third actually has a Wiki (I know, I was surprised too), and I went there to look up Jane Doe (don't ask), and I want to say right now: Jane Doe as a character is not necessarily a BAD idea. I'm not just saying that because she's hot (though that help), but the idea of a genetically enhanced seductress trained in assassination arts could work so much better in a completely different game then this one.
I was pretty sure that Rhenium was a thing, but much like DC's Prometheum the game version probably has nothing to do with the real thing. It does not surprise me that Devil's Third has a wiki page, between it trying so hard to set up a franchise and the bizarre fanbase that Itagaki seems to have. None of the game's characters are a bad idea, they just don't work in a deathly serious gray military shooter. If Devil's Third was a cartoon where you were just tracking and killing colorful gimmicky villains they would've worked.
Yeah, if Devil's Third had been some sort of over the top parody of shooters, then everything here could have worked. Hell, even in a fairly serious game, at least a few of the ideas (Rhenium X, the government conspiracy, and again, a character like Jane Doe) could make for some decent commentary. Rather then being wasted on a game that's trying to Frankenstein two genres together that completely don't fit.
I feel so bad for Itagaki.....dude made 9.0/10 over and over again since the Dead or Alive days and once he left to make his own game the publishers kept going under time and time again until we got this game.......EVEN MICROSOFT fucked him. He took a chance with the original xbox and supported them since the start making Dead or Alive 3/4 and Ninja Gaiden 1, Black and 2 exclusived to the xbox console for a long time.....only for Microsoft to tell him they would not help him make Devil's Third because it was not a Kinect game. That is some evil shit right there. I bought the game just to support Itagaki since his games on the original xbox made the console worth purchase besides Halo, Fable, PGR and Kotor
I have seen other walkthroughs on this game and I did see that the other weapons besides the sword do different stuff im just guessing that the sword you get at the start of the game is meant to be for that one section and the developers expected you to switch between melee weapons
This game is really fun to play.. especially as you can tackle the enemies as you want i.e. hack and slash or first/third person shooter style.. also the story is great and Ivan is cool
Adding the qui in Yanqui allows them to avoid censorship from certain boards as Yankee can be considered a slur. It's the same reason Marvel cocs used Paqui in the Captain America comics when they did Cap's solo Civil War storyline. I'm hoping that's the reason anyway.
Not gonna lie, I was one of those people that actually asked for it. Not because of the producer's reputation, mind you, but because I'm absolutely in weird, obscure-as-hell Nintendo-published games. By the way, the online multiplayer was absolutely fantastic. In fact, I thought it was the best on the Wii U, even above Splatoon. Too bad the online servers have been shutdown since late 2016.
Great review man, you continue to improve with each new video! I have any actual good game to recommend for you to play (and maybe review), Jadow. The 2014 reboot/remake of Strider, it's a great that very metroid-vania and offers a decent degree of fast pace challenge. It is availible on both PC (Steam) and PS4 for $15.
You want a good version of this game? Try Warframe. It's F2P and it's pretty fun. It also combines shooter and melee combat and you can basically play any level however you want to.
The sad thing is that this game seems to have gotten a limited print run (likely because of Nintendo's reluctance to publish it), so for a while copies of the game could only be obtained by scalpers for over $70. The price has gone down a bit, but it still must have royally sucked to buy an expensive game only to find it sucked hard.
I think that I ended up paying 40 bucks for my physical copy, and for how much Nintendo's embarassed by the game I'm pretty sure they still demand 40 bucks to download it. Even Ju-On the Grudge wasn't that much; it was $30.
I checked the interwebs and you can buy European copies of the game for around 20 to 30 dollars online. The North American version on the other hand goes for 100 to 200 dollars. Nintendo of America pretty much wanted nothing to do with the game.
I don't know why but I still want to play this game. It looks like a Suda game, and even the mediocre ones (Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is Dead) were good guilty pleasures for me
If you do want to play it, you'd probably be better buying it off the Wii U's E-Shop; I heard it's down to 30 bucks or below there, while discs are rare because Nintendo barely released it.
Having just beaten Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, I came back to this video to reflect on something. This is basically MGR, but with none of the charm or care put into it. I mean like you said about Big Mouse, it'd be like fighting Armstrong first, then fighting all the way back to Metal Gear Ray. Granted that would be awesome considering that game's bosses are phenomenal (Well, Sundowner can be a pushover if you don't get rid of his shields) but then again, the characters aren't memorable or even meme-worthy here, with the exception of maybe Ivan but I dunno. And another thing, while yes MGR does tackle themes such as the nature of war and stuff, it embraced the outlandish and ridiculous premise it had, unlike Devil's Third which as you said tries way too hard to be serious while trying to be goofy as hell. Plus it doesn't have RULES OF NATURE or "Memes...The DNA of the Soul".

I am one of those weirdos that liked Doe Another Day mostly because it’s a by the books cheesy James Bond flick mixed with ridiculous sci-fi technology that really feels like it was copied off of Metal Gear Solid
This video is awesome! Great job! I feel like games like this are too proud of their IP. Trying to make a multi-media franchise that has comics, a tv show, action figures, etc. before you know if it’s even successful is just too ambitious. Cheetahmen (action 52), Drake of the 99 Dragons, and this game all tried to do this and none of them worked. Making a good game should always come before the other stuff that you’re hoping to make money on. Anyway, I love your videos! Can’t wait for the next one, but can you do more good game reviews? I remember reading about this on a really small article on GameInformer and saw the reveal trailer. I was pretty excited for it, but never heard anything since then. I assumed it was unofficially cancelled, but then I saw some E3 footage in 2014, which lit up my excitement once again. I even bought a WiiU just to get my hands on the game (and Bayonetta 2), and sure enough it was underwhelming to say the least. I dunno, I kinda wished the game kept the art style and gameplay from the reveal trailer from E3 2010.
What did the game look like in its original E3 reveal? Because it'd make all of the sense if the game started cartoony and silly, then pivoted into gray shooter dullness.
It had an artstyle similar to the Xbox Ninja Gaiden titles, two *presumably playable characters (a Wolverine-lookalike with a shotgun and rocket launcher and a samurai chick in cowboy boots), and has wall-running.

That's why there are three bodies in different action poses in the game's title font. That would'be been WAY more interesting.
Just so you know, Lost Reavers shuts down on May 30. You don't have to (and you won't be missing out on a lot), but I'd really like to see you tear that game a new one.
When I played this game, I encountered a hilarious glitch where the model for the IL2 Sturmovic (the Russian ground attack plane that Ivan flys yet you don’t ground attack in) didn’t load. This left me laughing in the floor, watching Ivan fly around in his invisible plane though as if he was inspired from Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy’s invisible car from Spongebob!
"People asked for this" Like how people asked for The Last Story, Pandora's Tower and Xenoblade, only for the first two games to get totally buried and forgotten in favor of Xenoblade once they actually did release.
That's honestly a tough question, because at least I know that it's possible to beat Ride to Hell. I guess the answer depends on whether or not I get a rocket launcher and enough ammo for the armores fight.

I think I did the crime and re-played this game way more then I should. This was because I was poor, young with a Wii U and Devils Third interested me. So I played the game around 10 time... And that is not an exaggeration. I have matured a lot, and I decided to replay the game, this is what I have to say. I disagree that the game has bad combat, it's pretty fun and it reminds me a lot of Space Marine, which is a better game if you're after a title with range/melee combat. Pretty much that but with parkour. The story is bad, like really bad. I still can't make sense of it. So you're definitely not wrong there. The main problem isn't the controls, it's mainly got to do with the linearity, IGN says it pretty well with "the game would be forgiving if there was more ways to engage combat" and there was only one section I recall that does it pretty well when you're at the Japanese theme'd level and you have to hold off against enemy ninjas that attack at multiple areas, and with the buildings, it finally clicked... Just sadly that only happened for 5mins until the next part which repeated the repetitive format that which should be the main criticism. The multiplayer was fun as hell... Shame it was pay to win like games that had that structure at the time.
I never played the single player game but when the multiplayer was active the balance between close combat and firefights was surprisingly good. There was going to be a multiplayer only release on the PC; Did that ever get released?
@@Darklordjadow1 I don't have Splatoon but it seems to have lots of personality and color, unlike CoD clones were everything is ugly and generic. The Nintendo Switch is completely lacking in generic military shooters and to be hardly see that as a problem. Not gonna lose any sleep over missing out on CoD charging $2 for a dot.
@@elin111 Yeah, it's odd how games loaded down with microtransactions haven't been coming to the Switch. Jim Sterling was speculating that either Nintendo has less tolerance for that crap or Nintendo customers are harder marks for microtransactions and loot boxes. Good riddance, I say.
The common argument is that Nintendo hardware is weaker so big AAA games would not run on them, my theory is that the Nintendo audience is less "hardcore" so it's harder to sell them micro-transactions. FIFA seems to be an exception but that game is targetted at non-gamers. Either way third party AAA games are nothing to write home about these days, I've even seen people argue that the Switch being free of those games is a selling point. The only game from a AAA publisher I have on my Switch is the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy and that one is a single player game with no micro-transactions.
I remember seeing this game being hyped up by some outlets. I remember being just as confused about it then as now, even looking it all these details. Speaks about how bad the game is.
A far better mix of melee and gun combat is the Deadpool game. Because it is aware, shifts gameplay enough, and has very distinct melee weapons and guns. If you haven't checked out Deadpool yet I recommend it. It's fun though most of that is from Deadpool. Good review also.
The re-release of Deadpool was actually one of the first PS4 games I owned. I really liked it, though it does tend to drag a little bit in the middle. And yes- it did the hybrid combat FAR better than Devil's Third does- partly because you had a decent amount of health.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how Ivan, who is blind, is shooting anyone. Especially using a scope. But yeah, the game is just really undeniably bad.
Pretty sure the implication is that Ivan's sunglasses act as substitute eyes... however little sense that makes. And for a game so overloaded with lore, they don't go into why Ivan is apparently blind.
I just realized: I think Ivan is supposed to be blind without his sunglasses; and yet he does shoot Bitch in the Shell with a pistol AND reads a password off one of Kumano's tattoos without the sunglasses!
@@Darklordjadow1 I watched an LP of the game years ago and I thought I remembered that the actual last boss said Ivan was blind way back in the day. Tons of stuff in the story didn't add up and was severely convoluted. And I'd have to rewatch the LP, but I don't think the glasses his actual way of seeing. But I'd have rewatch to try and catch that part.

This makes the Deadpool game look like a masterpiece.
I feel so bad for Itagaki.....dude made 9.0/10 over and over again since the Dead or Alive days and once he left to make his own game the publishers kept going under time and time again until we got this game.......EVEN MICROSOFT fucked him. He took a chance with the original xbox and supported them since the start making Dead or Alive 3/4 and Ninja Gaiden 1, Black and 2 exclusived to the xbox console for a long time.....only for Microsoft to tell him they would not help him make Devil's Third because it was not a Kinect game. That is some evil shit right there. I bought the game just to support Itagaki since his games on the original xbox made the console worth purchase besides Halo, Fable, PGR and Kotor
Also, they say MOST of the electronic equipment, not ALL of it otherwise it would be complete anarchy and no communication.
I have seen other walkthroughs on this game and I did see that the other weapons besides the sword do different stuff im just guessing that the sword you get at the start of the game is meant to be for that one section and the developers expected you to switch between melee weapons
This game is really fun to play.. especially as you can tackle the enemies as you want i.e. hack and slash or first/third person shooter style.. also the story is great and Ivan is cool

Not gonna lie, I was one of those people that actually asked for it. Not because of the producer's reputation, mind you, but because I'm absolutely in weird, obscure-as-hell Nintendo-published games.
By the way, the online multiplayer was absolutely fantastic. In fact, I thought it was the best on the Wii U, even above Splatoon. Too bad the online servers have been shutdown since late 2016.

The 2014 reboot/remake of Strider, it's a great that very metroid-vania and offers a decent degree of fast pace challenge. It is availible on both PC (Steam) and PS4 for $15.
You want a good version of this game? Try Warframe. It's F2P and it's pretty fun. It also combines shooter and melee combat and you can basically play any level however you want to.
And I can vouch for the game! It’s awesome! Though you can grind to craft new suits, but you can buy them if you don’t want to waste time.

So, this game caused the death of many indie companies huh? Must have been touched by the very reaper themselves.
The sad thing is that this game seems to have gotten a limited print run (likely because of Nintendo's reluctance to publish it), so for a while copies of the game could only be obtained by scalpers for over $70. The price has gone down a bit, but it still must have royally sucked to buy an expensive game only to find it sucked hard.
I think that I ended up paying 40 bucks for my physical copy, and for how much Nintendo's embarassed by the game I'm pretty sure they still demand 40 bucks to download it. Even Ju-On the Grudge wasn't that much; it was $30.

I checked the interwebs and you can buy European copies of the game for around 20 to 30 dollars online.
The North American version on the other hand goes for 100 to 200 dollars. Nintendo of America pretty much wanted nothing to do with the game.

If you do want to play it, you'd probably be better buying it off the Wii U's E-Shop; I heard it's down to 30 bucks or below there, while discs are rare because Nintendo barely released it.

Having just beaten Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, I came back to this video to reflect on something.
This is basically MGR, but with none of the charm or care put into it. I mean like you said about Big Mouse, it'd be like fighting Armstrong first, then fighting all the way back to Metal Gear Ray.
Granted that would be awesome considering that game's bosses are phenomenal (Well, Sundowner can be a pushover if you don't get rid of his shields) but then again, the characters aren't memorable or even meme-worthy here, with the exception of maybe Ivan but I dunno.
And another thing, while yes MGR does tackle themes such as the nature of war and stuff, it embraced the outlandish and ridiculous premise it had, unlike Devil's Third which as you said tries way too hard to be serious while trying to be goofy as hell.
Plus it doesn't have RULES OF NATURE or "Memes...The DNA of the Soul".

This video is awesome! Great job! I feel like games like this are too proud of their IP. Trying to make a multi-media franchise that has comics, a tv show, action figures, etc. before you know if it’s even successful is just too ambitious. Cheetahmen (action 52), Drake of the 99 Dragons, and this game all tried to do this and none of them worked. Making a good game should always come before the other stuff that you’re hoping to make money on. Anyway, I love your videos! Can’t wait for the next one, but can you do more good game reviews? I remember reading about this on a really small article on GameInformer and saw the reveal trailer. I was pretty excited for it, but never heard anything since then.
I assumed it was unofficially cancelled, but then I saw some E3 footage in 2014, which lit up my excitement once again.
I even bought a WiiU just to get my hands on the game (and Bayonetta 2), and sure enough it was underwhelming to say the least.
I dunno, I kinda wished the game kept the art style and gameplay from the reveal trailer from E3 2010.
What did the game look like in its original E3 reveal? Because it'd make all of the sense if the game started cartoony and silly, then pivoted into gray shooter dullness.
It had an artstyle similar to the Xbox Ninja Gaiden titles, two *presumably playable characters (a Wolverine-lookalike with a shotgun and rocket launcher and a samurai chick in cowboy boots), and has wall-running.
@@rachelzhou1590 I do remember reading about that: there was supposed to be a squad of three protagonists each specializing in brawler, shooter, or platforming gameplay or something like that. That's why there are three bodies in different action poses in the game's title font. That would'be been WAY more interesting.

When I played this game, I encountered a hilarious glitch where the model for the IL2 Sturmovic (the Russian ground attack plane that Ivan flys yet you don’t ground attack in) didn’t load. This left me laughing in the floor, watching Ivan fly around in his invisible plane though as if he was inspired from Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy’s invisible car from Spongebob!
Damn it, how come I never ran into funny glitches like that? That sounds awesome!

That's honestly a tough question, because at least I know that it's possible to beat Ride to Hell. I guess the answer depends on whether or not I get a rocket launcher and enough ammo for the armores fight.

I think I did the crime and re-played this game way more then I should. This was because I was poor, young with a Wii U and Devils Third interested me. So I played the game around 10 time... And that is not an exaggeration. I have matured a lot, and I decided to replay the game, this is what I have to say.
I disagree that the game has bad combat, it's pretty fun and it reminds me a lot of Space Marine, which is a better game if you're after a title with range/melee combat. Pretty much that but with parkour.
The story is bad, like really bad. I still can't make sense of it. So you're definitely not wrong there.
The main problem isn't the controls, it's mainly got to do with the linearity, IGN says it pretty well with "the game would be forgiving if there was more ways to engage combat" and there was only one section I recall that does it pretty well when you're at the Japanese theme'd level and you have to hold off against enemy ninjas that attack at multiple areas, and with the buildings, it finally clicked... Just sadly that only happened for 5mins until the next part which repeated the repetitive format that which should be the main criticism.
The multiplayer was fun as hell... Shame it was pay to win like games that had that structure at the time.

I never played the single player game but when the multiplayer was active the balance between close combat and firefights was surprisingly good. There was going to be a multiplayer only release on the PC; Did that ever get released?

The Nintendo Switch is completely lacking in generic military shooters and to be hardly see that as a problem. Not gonna lose any sleep over missing out on CoD charging $2 for a dot.
@@elin111 Yeah, it's odd how games loaded down with microtransactions haven't been coming to the Switch. Jim Sterling was speculating that either Nintendo has less tolerance for that crap or Nintendo customers are harder marks for microtransactions and loot boxes.

The common argument is that Nintendo hardware is weaker so big AAA games would not run on them, my theory is that the Nintendo audience is less "hardcore" so it's harder to sell them micro-transactions. FIFA seems to be an exception but that game is targetted at non-gamers.
Either way third party AAA games are nothing to write home about these days, I've even seen people argue that the Switch being free of those games is a selling point. The only game from a AAA publisher I have on my Switch is the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy and that one is a single player game with no micro-transactions.

I remember seeing this game being hyped up by some outlets. I remember being just as confused about it then as now, even looking it all these details. Speaks about how bad the game is.
A far better mix of melee and gun combat is the Deadpool game. Because it is aware, shifts gameplay enough, and has very distinct melee weapons and guns. If you haven't checked out Deadpool yet I recommend it. It's fun though most of that is from Deadpool. Good review also.
The re-release of Deadpool was actually one of the first PS4 games I owned. I really liked it, though it does tend to drag a little bit in the middle. And yes- it did the hybrid combat FAR better than Devil's Third does- partly because you had a decent amount of health.

I'm surprised you didn't mention how Ivan, who is blind, is shooting anyone. Especially using a scope. But yeah, the game is just really undeniably bad.
Pretty sure the implication is that Ivan's sunglasses act as substitute eyes... however little sense that makes. And for a game so overloaded with lore, they don't go into why Ivan is apparently blind.
I just realized: I think Ivan is supposed to be blind without his sunglasses; and yet he does shoot Bitch in the Shell with a pistol AND reads a password off one of Kumano's tattoos without the sunglasses!
@@Darklordjadow1 I watched an LP of the game years ago and I thought I remembered that the actual last boss said Ivan was blind way back in the day. Tons of stuff in the story didn't add up and was severely convoluted. And I'd have to rewatch the LP, but I don't think the glasses his actual way of seeing. But I'd have rewatch to try and catch that part.
