    I had a bad problem with tiny black flies all over my covered garden this past year. I’m afraid to plant anything there now. But might use a couple totes I have and just plant right into the bag. I read that with it upside down it will keep itself moist and in full sun the lettuce will grow thru the winter.

      I would still give it a try. Often Nature figures it out and reduces populations of insects.

    Make sure to set up cold frame where it gets sun. I made mistake of setting it up in fall in area that was getting many hours of sun. But now gets no sun due to shorter days and positioning of sun in sky. Now have to move everything. Happy Holidays Everyone!

      True. Mine is angled toward the wrong direction btw. But it was placed there more for acclimating and growing my spring transplants.

    What other veggies can I start growing in December under hoops that will mature before May?

      I’m growing micro greens mix,(kale, 2 kinds of Choi, cabbage, and mustard. We’ve gotten in the twenties on multiple nights and everything is doing good whether it’s been under cover or not. The red lettuces, beets, Swiss chard lots of leafy greens will survive the cold. Depends on how cold it gets but especially if you start them indoors, lots of things will produce slowly.

      Really any cool crops based on how warm it stays. But leafy greens any time. Turnips are good ones.

    What are bunching onions

      Scallions

    • @Gardeningchristine
      @Gardeningchristine 7 місяців тому

      Bunching onions are green onions and don’t produce a bulb. They are grown to eat the greens. You can actually replant the bottom inch or so of your store bought green onions and more than likely they will grow more greens for you.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 місяців тому

      Spring onions they are often called. No bulbing as mentioned.

    I started some micro greens mix and decided to plant them out in my newest raised bed instead of eating them now.🌱🌿🌱🥬🥬🥬

    • @Gardeningchristine
      @Gardeningchristine 7 місяців тому

      I covered them with a clear shower curtain supported by 6 solar lights. I like recycling and it seems to be working well so far. Not exactly a cold frame but I’ve also tried milk jugs and totes. The tote worked great but I could only fit about 8 plants under it.
