My wife needed some new planters for around the house so I set out to design 4 of the easiest DIY planters there are! What makes them so simple is that I designed them to work with the "actual" dimensions of ordinary construction-grade lumber so there's no lumber milling required and a very limited set of tools needed. There’s a large raised bed, a tri-level corner planter, a standalone planter with a trellis, and one that will straddle a railing. Super easy pocket-hole construction and they look fantastic! These are PERFECT for the beginner or for the DIYer that's looking to make a little money with a side hustle by selling some easy-to-make planters. Plans to make them are on my website and are ONLY $5! www.fishersshoponline.com
SPONSOR: www.kregtool.com
Thanks to Kreg for making, hands-down, the BEST pocket hole jig there is.
This thing is an absolute MUST for any woodworker.

"as good as used"
I've gotta keep this one in my pocket!
I think we would all REALLY like to meet your neighbor. 😊
I'm surprised he hasn't been caught on camera when he comes over to collect all his things.
@@am2dan Drew is pretty sneaky. Perhaps he doesn’t know where his things are?
I was beginning to think that his next-door neighbour IS the big-box store.
@@robt2151 Oooo, even sneakier! 🫣
Drew, not only are your projects fun and informative, but the Bloopers are CLASSIC!! Keep up the good - and bad - work, buddy!!
Thanks! Will do!
I’m SO disappointed in the neighbor, he did not have what you’re looking for 😂😂😂😂
He’s the worst.
Hehe 😉
They did have the jigsaw which was crutch.
Drew, great video!!! This is great project for a beginner with out having a truck load of tools to make them!! Way to take all levels of competence in to consideration!!!
Thanks 👍
You sir, are the man. I want to build a few of these for my wife
Right on, have fun
Thanks for posting...these are nice builds!!! I so appreciate your out-takes...Man I'm glad I'm not the only one who does silly things! I am such a cluts in my shop. Thanks for being real!
Glad you like them!
You exited through the entrance like a true rebel
This video plants a seed!
😉
That looked like a fun project to do.
Fun and quick!
Drew, I'm sorry to be the one to point this out, but you flipped the small and medium levels on the Tri-level planter. The plans show the small on the left but you built it with it on the right. Hehe great vid as always!
Just hold a mirror up to it. :)
Glad you didn't hit the back yard over at the house. Got my Cedar hanging baskets my dad made 30 years ago. They are Hexagons and perfect for my hanging baskets. They look good too. I remember working with him to setup the jigs because he made about 50 of those baskets for the family.
You don't like the bunnies? I sent them over to you special. They don't bother me any more...LOL...
Great video
Thanks!
Planter season is HERE! I just finished up an order for 10 and am working on a new order of 2 more. I think my favorite of the one you built is the tri-level one. The one that goes on the railing is pretty awesome too. Great video as always Drew!
Thanks a bunch!
Better than fireworks for me. A Fisher Shops video. Great one as always.
Thanks 👍
Whelp. Guess I know what I’m makeing for my sisters birthday this weekend
Perfect!
With all the screws Kreg sent you some day your son will be trolling people by putting in one of his dads old pocket screws into every project
Haha, probably!
Thanks! Those are awesome. I wish I could keep a plant alive.
Great video showing the different planter options! I was also impressed by the plug cutting accessory for the 720pro! That’s awesome! I’ll definitely consider this when it comes time to replace my K5!
Yup, I had the K5 before this one and I can tell ya, the new one blows it away.
I love the bloopers at the end.
Glad you enjoyed'em. :)
Great timing, Drew! I'm working on planters this weekend!
Sweet! These are super easy builds! Have fun
They look great.
Thanks
Some cracking Planters there Drew, perfect for your wifes Flowers and/or your Vegetables to grow, thanks for the video and the plans i have just bought them. Take Care.
Barry (UK)
Right on! Thanks for the support!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
A planter I built nearly two decades ago has finally started falling apart and wife asked for a new one. The first build in this video will fit the bill perfectly! Great job Drew! BTW, your online website is showing as private. I can't get the plans from there. Keep up the awesome work!
That is awesome! Website will be back up momentarily. Thanks!
Out takes are the best to see.
Glad you like them
Really amazing work, Drew! They look beautiful! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you! Will do!
Nice work. I feel you on the rust... I made a couple of cedar planters and left a piece on my saw. Doh. 🤦♂️
The store-bought cedar was wet? I thought that stuff was usually dry. Unless you meant the cedar fence pickets... yeah those are wet.
The flower boxes turned out nice, but you forgot to paint them the same color as the house or the railings. 😉
Can't paint or stain PT lumber until it dries. I have to wait a year
Seeing the jig gradually wonder away from you at 3:19 made me chuckle because you had shown the hold-down clamp not 20 seconds before, but I do like the simplistic design to these planters. And that Kreg jig does look the business - think it might be time to upgrade my Kreg K2000. Nice work Drew!
Haha yeah. Thanks for watching
Great build project. Love the outtakes.
Thanks! 👍
This has me dreaming up ideas for my new house.
Right on!
Another awesome video!! Purchasing plans now, thanks for taking more of my money!!!
Always glad to do it, John. Haha
Thank you for sharing the video. I learned a lot of useful things while watching this video
Glad it was helpful!
7:36 Here comes another video? ?? ??? GREAT projects Drew, crazy how expensive construction grade lumber is not days. Back in my day. . . .
Yeah, and to think cedar is more than twice as expensive!
Great job
Thanks!
I already subscribed and bought the plan thanks
Thanks for the support
You're welcome
Great video as always Drew the planters look amazing. And absolutely love the outtakes lol. Thanks for sharing
Thanks 👍
Those planters turned out so beautiful and would be a fun/easy build!!! Looks like I'll have to put that Kreg 720 Pro on my wish list. I've got a couple of their earlier pocket hole jigs but this one looks super nice. I didn't know they make a plug cutter for pocket holes now! Always love your outtakes. It makes me feel like I'm not alone with mishaps that occur in the shop! Did you put your SawStop on bypass to rip that pressure treated lumber? How disheartening to get all that rust on your saw but looks like you got it off just fine. Hope you show a picture of the planters after being painted in a later video!
Thanks! Nope, didn’t use bypass.
I love your editing. 👍
Thanks! 😊
You need to get Kreg to make a slotted head pocket screw
I do!
OK, so... s-foils in attack position had me laughing so I missed the next 30 seconds... box designs were great and I'll be getting even more of your plans... outtakes make me feel better since I'm not alone... and your asthma attack after knocking the dust off the light fixture was just [chef's kiss] like watching myself work. Great video.
Haha thanks! 🙏
Pocket holes are fine, but slow and visible. I've designed, built, and sold a lot of planter boxes. Galvanized staples, waterproof PVA glue, and cedar produces the cleanest looking and most durable boxes for the same cost (or less).
Not sure why you think they're slow or visible. I assembled these planters in no time and all the holes are hidden (except for the last one which got filled). I think I'd prefer using pocket holes over staples, but that's just me. But I do agree that cedar would have looked WAY nicer.
@@FishersShopPocket hole joinery is a good balance of speed and aesthetics. Very accessible to new woodworkers, too. It just doesn’t scale well for this type of project. I can bust out a 36” x16” box in 20 minutes from pre-cut pieces with staples and glue, whereas it would take me probably twice that with pocket holes. It’s all good - I really like how you made this project something that anyone can do (you’re very good at that).
lol I loved the video and enjoyed the calm voice and jokes but the outtakes really put me over the edge and hit that perfect spot of why I am subscribed! This video got me thinking about gardening and I live in an apartment with a black thumb! Good job! Although I did miss the one flat head screw.
Yeah I forgot to stick one in there somewhere. 😀
Drew's next video ... table saw top restoration.
---------
Great projects, Drew!
Gave me an idea for a future project.
I'm glad you liked it! Have fun with the project
I make these out of cedar fence pickets. These look great!
Yup, that works too. The lumber I chose is thicker than those pickets so the planters might last longer, but only time will tell.
@@FishersShop I will laminate 3-4 pickets together for strength. It works well for me.
This was a great video fisher and amazing work again and u are the best and always do amazing work!!
I appreciate that, thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
I enjoy all your videos and u are an amazing wood worker just like my dad
That plug cutter is a good idea! don't know if it will work with older kregg jigs though...
It won't. However, I think it might in the 520.
Those are all nice, Drew. It's too bad your neighbor didn't have any lumber for you to "borrow". Where was the flat head screw? You should have put on in just to annoy the haters.
Bill
I should have
Drew, thank you for the video and I love the plans! P.S. thanks also for the outtakes I feel totally normal when I watch them! Scott
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching
i have that pocket jig, the only down side is that it doesn’t clamp anything thicker than 18-19mm (sorry ¾”)
Of course it does. The 2x2s are 1 1/2”. But I got a full 2” board in there earlier.
i guess if i was wanting something thicker then it wouldn’t do it
Good stuff, Drew, as always. Loved the Q*bert reference ... great memories, and I may even still have a copy of it around someplace!
Hey, what paste wax do you use on your table saw? I couldn't read the brand ...
Glad you enjoyed it!
I use Bumblechutes. They're an affiliate of mine. FISHER10 saves you money
Just ordered the 720 Pro jig hope it helps support your channel
I'm afraid it does not, but that's ok. :) You'll love it!
I am so saying S foils in attack position next time I'm putting up my miter wings up.
And I like my 720 Pro. Not as much as my Domino, but it's miles above other pocket jigs.
Hehe, right on. :)
Well I guess I know what my next project for the house will be. Thanks. . . I think 😊
Hah, you can do it!
Nice looking planters. Be careful though, the Blue Kreg screws are not rated for wood treated with ACQ (Alkaline copper quaternary) and all the local treated wood uses that. It will destroy the screws in a few years. Use stainless steel if you can find ones that have the washer head.
Interesting, never heard of that issue before.
I do love your outtakes because it shows the issue I would have as well. Thanks sir! I love your videos! John 3:16 + 1 = 1 John 4:17.
Glad you like them!
I think it’s worth noting you probably shouldn’t use pressure treated wood for anything you want to plant to eat. Pay the extra to build it out of cedar for safety 🙂
Only if you don't want your food to have that extra tangy zip
Next up: Tablesaw restoration video!
I wouldn’t recommend pressure treated lumber if you’re going to plant vegetables. PT lumber has arsenic in it that can leach into the veggies.
But it adds a delicious tangy flavor!!
The EPA outlawed arsenic in PT in 2004.
I love the blooper side of it. 😅.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice Work, Looks Great. Not wood from your Neighbor's? You TOOK IT ALL. LOL.
Happy 4th of July.
#STAYSAFE
#PHILLYPHILLY 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching!
I hope that pocket hole jig is sturdier than it looks! 🤨
I just didn’t bother to clamp it down. It’s actually more stout than the K5
You draw plans and then assemble by eye. I make plans on the go using what I got on hand and assemble by eye. We are the same but different
I don’t assemble by eye. I do everything from the design
I left some PT boards on my plywood top assembly table for a couple days. When I finally picked them up there was mold on the unsealed plywood. 🤦
😬
"S-foils to attack position" on the miter saw station 🤣
Stay on target
Sure, like your working methods. I think I'm going to make this my first choice in planters. I actually need a router table, but just can't decide which one I would like to last a long time. I looked in my neighbor's garage and he doesn't have one. So, I guess I'll have to buy one. Any way you can recommend one?
I switched to the Jessem one and it’s great!
5:55 hol up
He’s good fertilizer.
First like and comment. Seems like forever since I've gotten to seen one of your videos!
Glad you spotted the new one! :)
Me and my son watching the outtakes. hahahah, hoo hoo hee hee, oh man done that before, ( Drew shows table saw ) OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO how the hell did that happen, Makes note to self.
Of cousre we knew you would fix it up, because .... your Drew Mr DIY!!!! Thanks for the July 4th wakeup call. Have a good weekend.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you liked it!
Not criticizing, but for some reason, you forgot one of grandpa’s screws.
Yeah, I knew I'd get a few comments about not using them. Hehe. Thanks for watching regardless. :)
@@FishersShopand no unnecessary use of walnut?
LOL...S-foils...oh nice Starswars reference!
I used that before except I misspoke and said X-foils. I was corrected countless times by all the Star Wars nerds. haha
Fisher quick question for you. I have the same miter saw, when i cut thick stock the blade will deflect unless i cut very aggressively. Any clue why this happens?
Hmm no. I've never had a problem like that. That sounds like something is wrong with your saw.
No flat head pocket hole screws?
I need Kreg to make me some
It looks like you walked right out the HD any skipping paying. Then the line right after “…because I’m a cheapskate..” lol
Haha, when I was editing I noticed that too. Figured it would be funny to just leave it that way
Awesome video! What camera and program to edit do you use for your videos?
I use an ancient Canon EOS60D with a 25 and a 50mm lens. I use Sony Vegas, which I do NOT recommend, to edit.
@@FishersShop I never even heard of Sony Vegas haha... Keep the videos coming #gladimnotyourneighbor
I have an older kreg jig. Is this one worth the upgrade cost?
Depends on how much you use it I guess. The new one is quite an improvement.
how do you account for the shrinkage of the treated lumber with it all being pocket screwed together
I don’t but it hasn’t been a problem really.
@@FishersShop that surprises me I have used a lot of PT over the years and its always wet and has shrank on me you make nice tight joints and they shrink on you
No flathead screw?
Not this time
Very disappointed... now I think I have to unsubscribe.... or not. But seriously-neighbor didn't donate any black walnut, no flathead screw... what's next, no "oh, crap!" in the outtakes. I tell ya the world is coming to an end.🤣
Just a warning about PT lumber on your cast iron table saw - it will corrode the surface VERY quickly. Even chips and dust. Be careful not to leave any lying on the cast iron part for very long. Ask me how I know :(
You stopped watching the video early.
@@FishersShop Evidently so. That was some brutal rust :(
Wait, where’s the heirloom flat-head screw??
Didn’t make it into this video.
Wait?? No flathead screw?
I should have planted a little brass flathead. That way I could grow and harvest a ton more.
Isn't it nice to be able to say, that your dust collection system, "REALLY SUCKS!" 🤣😂🤣😂
Haha, yup!
❤😂❤
I know the vid is sponsored, but I feel like that rail planter could have gone together with just glue and brads.
Yeah probably could have.
So they did approve in time?!
They did! :)
What? All those screws and not a single flat head!
I'll have to petition Kreg to make some flathead pocket screws.
I'm waiting for the reveal that his "neighbour" is actually a timber yard. They skipped on this because they didn't want the association with construction timber and pocket screws.
#ad
I see it's your first time here. Welcome to the Internet
At this point we are starting to feel bad for his neighbor. He is a single dad who works in a factory 60 hours a week.
Come on Drew you could have made a whole different video out of the table saw top restore LOL
Haha, nah.
Your neighbor is obviously part of the supply chain problem if he can’t keep what you need on hand!!
What's this? No unnecessary walnut used for a project?
Can you believe it?
Okay, I know this was sponsored by Kreg, but I don’t think you needed to screw down every slat with pocket screws. That’s like $100 in pocket screws! Also surprised Kreg wouldn’t pay for the cedar. Pressure treated is not something I’d run my nice saw blades through. I love your channel, but this one felt like a reach. Also, no unnecessary walnut and not one flathead screw!
lol, it's not $100 in screws. The tri-level planter was $16 for all 212 screws that I used. And yeah... maybe you could get away with fewer, but I had them so I used them. I didn't ask Kreg to pay for any of the materials, I chose and bought all of that myself, including the screws. I could have spent more and gotten cedar but one of my objectives was to demonstrate how affordable building these planters can be.
you mean your neighbour’s rabbit won’t eat your flowers
What?!? No plug made from walnut? No marriage between the Kreg jig holes and a single brass slotted screw? I am disappoint.
A missed opportunity for sure
Give drews account back please
CRAPSTICKS! 😂
Love the planters, but you shouldn't use treated if you're going to plant food plants in them. The chemicals can leach out and get in your taters. Nobody wants that.
I don’t eat flowers.
@@FishersShop 🤣🤣🤣
A special kind of stupid... As good as used... The woodworking was really good also.
Glad you liked it
