I am just getting into woodworking with no experience. I have watched countless videos of people making planters. While they all have been helpful in one way or another, the simplicity, actual visual demonstration, and narration you provide are the best. Watching your videos have boosted my confidence and filled gaps in the "how do I do this one thing?". I appreciate you. Subscribed!
Thank you for the step by step video. Even with the clear and consice instructions, I still ordered the plans just to show my support; plus I'm a plans in the hand kind of guy. Thanks again and continued success with your channel. Cheers!!
Ive sold over 200 of the planter you taught me to build last year. I get pallet off cuts for .10$ a board. Im into the boxes for like 1.25-1.50$ at most. Its been great. I might dabble with these. Lots of cuts but the profit margins are silly. Thanks alot!
Thanks Jeff. I originally made a prototype where the slats were all 1.5" and the finished product looked like a wood trash can. Lol. So I made the gaps narrower and used different widths. Thanks for commenting!
I just built one of these...literally the first wood working project that I ever did..Came out ok, a bit crooked but that's all on me. Thanks for this video. I bought the plans for this as a thank you. I'll be giving a second one again soon.
@@BradyHommel Thank you. I figured out what I did wrong. I put two of the longer sides together opposed to opposite sides of each other. I do recall that I did grab the shorter side but I guess I didn’t.
i built the small ones, with no problems thanks to your teaching. now i will build the large ones and i will let you know how it goes. Thanks for taken the time to explain everything.
I have just completed my first planter with your plan, Thank You, you are a very good Teacher. I did mind in cedar with a beeswax finish, light weight and it looks Great.
Hey Brady, loved this build. Made em and had customers ask for shorter ones so I have16" and 20" ones. Same size as the 24" one,but shorter. They love em..
Great job BH! I am in the middle of building my first one. I purchased the plans to help support the channel! The file for the Night Stands is mismarked as the 2xs4 patio chairs. So when you download them you get two of the same-titled file but it is a different file when you open it.
I built a set of these and like the look and the process. I had some trouble with my first one because the pickets had such irregular edges and it threw off some of the joints so on the second one I crosscut all my pieces but before ripping them I jointed one edge on each board. This gave me the accuracy I was looking for and my second one turned out much better. I also used a speed square when making the four side frames which helped a lot to get everything to line up for the assembly of the uprights and main carcass. I also appreciate your skill at editing your videos; so many others make you slog through 16 of the same cuts at regular speed. Nice work!
I would nail the vertical slats from the inside so you don't see the nail holes. Also, use pocket hole screws to attach the side assemblies. Then all you have exposed are the top nail holes and you gave a great way to hide those. Thanks for the video, great plans.
Great project and video tutorial! The Lowes we have in south Florida had cheap fence pickets and I picked up 6 for 1.98 each. They were slightly less than 5 1/2” wide. So squaring up lost a bit more off each side. Also they were so rough and mildew encrusted I planed them a tiny bit at a time to 9/16” thick. I’ve cut all 48 pieces but am thinking assembly will be interesting as all final measurements are a bit off of the plans.
I'm really liking this planter. I think I'm going to buy your plans. I've making small planters and they sell quickly! Thanks for uploading this. I'm subscribing to the channel
@BradyHommelwoodworks I'm hoping to get some actual woodworking videos out this year..most of my content revolves around hand restorations. Keep up the good work
Keep your eye on marketplace. I actually got my first table saw for free off of there. It didn't come with a fence but I just clamped down a piece of plywood each time. Not ideal but better than no tablesaw.
@@coffeesleeves I used a circular saw before I got my table saw. Kreg makes a track and adapter plate that makes long rip cuts easy with one. I still use it to break down full sheets of plywood. Square crosscuts are easy with a speed square.
@@tektrixter Great suggestion. I thought about giving that a try. Could that track be used to make long rip cuts on a thin piece though? I have a feeling it could be tricky to be consistent and "confident" making that sort of cut. I didn't check the price of the "Kreg" piece yet, but have a feeling the cost could be up there...
Thank you! Yes 5 pickets per planter. I made a prototype at first and the widths were all 1.5" and it looked like a wooden track can. Lol. So I went with the different widths.

Nice planters! A rough estimated price of the total cost of other supplies such as sand paper, wood glue, nails & screws, wood filler & stain would be helpful on these types of videos too-
Out of my seven uprights plus that leftover piece I only got 22 at 1 1/2. Can’t figure out where I went wrong because everything else came out the same.
Thanks I actually use a laser engraver. I used to have a branding iron but changed logos. Plus a laser engraver is much more versatile. When I did use branding irons tho I ordered one from Gearhart industry. Then a 2nd one from Amazon. Amazon was way cheaper and worked just as good. I actually may get another one because the brands are faster.
Glad to hear that! I mixed minwax stain. color is provincial 211 for these. Ones. No real ratio I just mixed a little bit in with the Thompsons waterseal

Yes they will vary a little bit. But generally speaking they are on average 5/8" I have gotten a couple that have been as thin as a half inch to as thick as 3/4" most are 5/8 tho
@@BradyHommel Thank you very much, my local Home Depot has what they call fence pickets in 5', 6' and 8' lengths.
