I’ve just played it a few times yesterday. Love it and the original. The Splendor cities expansions adds a lot of things that people will like about Splendor Duel
Well, i kinda try to keep my ears away from the buzzing buzz. I play to splendor (marvel) and love it. First, Splendor is already a great 2 players game, maybe it is at its best with 2 players. Second, Splendor is all in few rules and almost no constrains : you can pick either 3 diferent ones or 2 identical ones if there is at least 4 in the pile, you cant have more than 10 chips, .. that's about it and the rest is pure strategy, anticipation, risk taking. Now, what this version adds.. some calculation about how to take gems...actually it is already in the base game... how many time do we ask ourself : if i buy that card, i release 2 red chips.. do i want that ? i'd better reserve that card, although i can buy it. More boards, more rules, doesnt mean more interest. Do Journeyman adds interest to isle of Skye or does it deserve the simplicity and depth of the basic game ?
I’m almost always for more streamlined games with less rules, but I found this (and everyone I’ve played it with also agrees) that is just a better deeper richer experience without adding too many more rules.
Hi Dan, as usual love your enthusiastic energy and Cathala's one of my favorite designers too. I was about to purchase Sobek2P but was waiting to compare with Splendor2P. So far from what I've seen I think I'd prefer Sobek. I dunno, this just seems a bit fiddly to me (plus I still enjoy playing original Splendor at 2P and prefer its art, card size and larger tokens). Do you feel this might replace Sobek for you?
I don’t think this would replace Sobek for me. They have similarities but definitely very different too. If you like Bruno and Splendor you really should have both!
I agree with Dan, this is better, in part because it's way less fiddly. For the board refills, you can easily hold a stack of these gems in your palm and slide them on to the board by "popping" them off your thumb; the Sobek 2P tiles are too big to do something like that, and they also HAVE to be oriented all the same way, which adds more time.
it does without an insert, and you can even fit in Cities of Splendor too. I literally put the entire Splendor Duel box inside the original game box with everything else in there too except the big game's insert.
"Look how they massacred my boy!" I love the original Splendor. It is an incredibly elegant design with little rules and an absolute ton of depth. From what I see in this review Splendor Duel simply lacks the simplicity of the original. Way more mechanics which I would argue is a change for he worse. And on top of this base Splendor plays incredibly well with 2 players so the Duel version doesn't serve this purpose.
Jaipur is more of a card game about timing the selling at the right time events Splendor Dual is more like an abstract board game to gather resources to build engine and be efficient. Other than both being 2 players they are very different but hopefully this helps you decide

Absoultely! If I'm playing 2 player that is a gamer, I'd pick this everytime. More depth without a lot more complexity.

First thing I noticed. Game looked interesting but that makes it an instant no buy for me.
I agree small cards suck. It won’t stop me from playing the game, just an annoyance.
Tiny cards to go with the tiny (well, smaller) chips. 🙄

It really isn't that much more complex at all. It just gives the game even more depth! Everyone I have taught it to(many people) feel the same!
