Not bad luck as much as you just have to adapt your game. You shouldn’t preset a strategy but you should tactically react to what is out there to grab.
I will add this to my 2 player wishlist. I’ve enjoyed Splendor but don’t own it. I know enough others with it. I really like Bruno C. As a game designer, so I’m looking forward to trying this game. The card arrangement displayed in your video reminds me a bit of of 7 Wonders Duel, which is a great 2 player game!
Splendor Duel was my BIGGEST surprise for 2P and definitely agree that if you didn't like SPLENDOR I'm not sure if this is going to change your mind. But splendor was already a 7 to me (a good but ultimately a game that needed a bit more) so playing it a few times I was definitely around an 8. Having played it at least 10x I really appreciate the changes they made and hope if splendor multiplayer ever did an expansion that they would go somewhere along this route. To me, this game is definitely a 9. I can't give it a 10 because the rule book itself has some flaws in its explanation (me thinking that refilling the board required a scroll) and the exception rule that if a player must refill if they can't do any mandatory actions should have been included on the player aid as well as making it clear that the optional actions should be done in order. This made the first few games i played with a friend a bit stale like we were doing something wrong but couldn't quite figure out why.
I think I feel the same as Ryan. I have a lot of great two player games (all the ones Ryan mentions), and I don't really like Splendor to begin with, so not sure I would want to play this over another game.
Keeps getting better and better with each play! I’m okay with the luck aspect in this one, but if we tire of it in the future, I might try a variant of having the top card in each stack face up, so you know the next card that will come in play from each deck. So far, we really love it, and prefer it to Splendor. I am curious if this one will see expansions, though it feels pretty complete as it is.
