What an absolutely AWESOME display of tennis by Steffi off the ground. I'm not sure if I have ever seen another player hit such precise groundstrokes. So many outright winners! Pam was hit by a bulldozer.
It’s not just the precision (Evert and Hingis were also excellent in that regard), but it’s also the phenomenal athleticism and power that she combined it with.
This applies to all matches of this era, but it must be mentioned here because of Graf's great showcase of ability, but this isn't just with the old equipment, but it's the true modern equipment. These racquets were more standard and uniform, which made for fairness and less altering/helping/masking of the players' true abilities. But Graf did all that with these heavier racquets, smaller heads, less fuss on the strings, etc. Thank you, Ms. Graf!
A shame Steffi couldn’t play like this in the final. Martina obviously had more weapons than Pam but Steffi was nervous and really couldn’t get her groundstrokes going in the same way as here.
In fairness to Pam Shirver, her R16 , 10-8 3rd set win over S Hanika , then in QF, def Sukova 10-8 3rd set, Shriver truly had almost no answer for Graf's passing shots. Credit to Shriver in earning 2 games. Sidebar, great to see Graf, serve/volley
I'm fairly sure this match was after that showcase semifinal of Evert/Navratilova. The crowd must've been gutted. After seeing Steffi do this to Pam, I felt she would win the Final. Alas, she was not quite ready for the all-time grass court player, Navratilova, who, to be fair, got several fortunate let cords on that Final.
The Wimbledon 1987 annual discussed that - it said Pam spoke to Martina about this match afterwards and told her not to read too much into it. She said she wasn't really into the match, no doubt exhausted from the series of very tough matches she'd had in earlier rounds. She also reminded Martina that she (Martina) had more shots to hurt Steffi with than she had. Having said that, I do think Steffi was very nervous in the final. Compared to her previous matches in the tournament, she played some fairly edgy tennis at times.
Shriver at her best had a nice net game with ok ground strokes ; but a rather shakey & inconsistent back hand slice ( unlike Grafs ) let her down often
Actually Steffi won not even one game to love. And only one to 15. Steffi won 59 points and Shriver 39. For comparison: When Steffi beat Seles in the 1992 final she won with 69-44 on points played.
Pam would have had a much better singles game if she had been more patient and not rushing the net. She gets smoked way too much at net despite her height and reach.
This match should be called Steff’s greatest hits! A real demolition job
