      Yup for that much faster courts and rackets that generate speed instead of topspin would be needed.
      Think, the average rotation of Sampras’ or Agassi’s shots were around 1800 rotations per minute. Roger and Nole 2500. Rafa 3200 (peaking at 5000). You can’t serve and volley in those conditions. Or you’d have to make surfaces so fast that big serves would own everything. Just think how slow today’s grass is vs grass in the 80s and 90s.

      On the women's side agree, Halep and Barty are good, but they're not great. Osaka is way too inconsistent to be considered great, even if she shows flashess of greatness, and Bianca is also a little inconsistent and then always injured. Sabalanka shows potential, but other then that women's tennis has nothing. It's pathetically shallow, and none of the players on this list are good enough to dominate this shallow field. It's sad.

      @@rexdby2984 If you get the chance to take in a slam, I'd suggest you go and immerse yourself in that experience. Just watch the difference in court attendance when a ladies living legend takes to the court when there is a current top tenner currently playing. You'll witness an exodus to the outside courts when Navratilova, Davenport, Martinez and co come on for their doubles encounters. Seriously, it's been like a stampede at Wimbledon and US where people just scramble to go watch some actual tennis - rather than the vacuous, witless ball thrashing that passes for the women's game these days. I got chatting to Martina with an old friend just 3 years ago at Wimby - she spent a little time with us, took some selfies, chatted about the world - Davenport was really nice too. They really could show some of the current crop of women how to grace a court and charm a crowd :-) Incidentally that was the evening when Davenport and McEnroe openly stated on BBC TV highlights that Evert and Nav' would still be top 5 players, even in today's game, because they were such very skilled players.

      Graf never “solved” Martina's game. They were 2-2 h2h in the last 3 years that they met, despite Martina being in her mid to late 30s vs. prime Graf. Martina won their last major match up at USO91, aged 34. And Martina was past her very best by 1988, older than a retired Graf. Her winning percentage was v good in 1988/89 only because the rest of the field - Graf's contemporary rivals - were so weak. But by '88 she was losing to players like Garrison whom she'd dominated before. She was burnt out by then and post peak, which was 1982-86.

      Liamhen, whether it was "reported" or not, I didn't see any difference in Graf's play from previous rounds or matches!!!. As for "being ill", take a read at Chris Evert's book where she states that bother her AND Martina had very heavy periods and in some big matches they could hardly walk!!!. But because they were the number 1 and 2 in the world you HAD to PLAY ON!!!. Also in her book, she recalls having a "mystery virus" and before a big game at Wimbledon, she was lying in a darkened room for 3 days BEFORE the game!!!. At Wimbledon one year it was "reported" that Graf had a "major injury" to her left knee and could "hardly walk". She came on the court with a PLASTER on her knee and ran about like a gazelle and won easily in straight sets!!!. So I suggest you don't take anything that's "reported" as being right!!!.

      Wta4hand right. Raising the net wouldn’t bring back serve and volley. It would make it harder to serve as big - more players would rely on topspin and slice serves to overcome the new net height. Speeding up the courts and balls makes the most sense in terms of getting more players to play an aggressive style.

      She is an utterly tremendous champion, and given her background, the challenges with her sexuality, changing her nationality and defecting to the U.S etc, the continued and vicious harrassment she received from the press, difficulties securing sponsorships due to being gay, she really did have a lot to be up against. And all this against the backdrop of battling the greatest baseliner of them all, and darling of the media - Evert. That they both gave so very much to women's tennis, carrying its torch til it could be handed over to the likes of Graf, is testament to their mindsets and the special place they held in their hearts for others.
      Interestingly, it is only in recent years that the physical and emotional difficulties they experienced during their years in tour have come to prominence. Of course we witness on this site those crazed fanatics of successor players who seek to diminish Nav's & Evert's manifest achievements by making commentary regarding their physicality, sexuality, age etc. It's all the stuff of deluded, narcissistic, likely undiagnosed ( and therefore untreated) imbeciles. King, Evert and Navratilova gave us all the women's tour to enjoy. Players, commentators and fans alike have described them both as living legends, and Nav' the GOAT. She achieved so much within the context of those aformentioned interpersonal rivalries, as well as the consistent onslaught of Evert, who showed such tenacity in finally wrestling the No1 spot from her in '85. Nav' lived with the ever present spectre of Evert to sharpen her determination to stay one step ahead. Graf and Seles might have enjoyed a similar rivalry, save for the tragic events which overtook their times; that's a crying shame for true tennis fans everywhere. I've watched commentary in recent years from Davenport, Austin, McEnroe, Wade, Wilander and even King - all of whom openly stated that had Seles not been so tragically removed from the game at that time, Graf could have hoped for 50% of the titles she eventually won thereafter. i think that's a fair assessment. In their rivalry they each needed each other, and they were denied the chance to become even greater than they each were.
      Navratilova is undoubtedly the greatest athlete in women's tennis - bar none. She changed the game and set the bar for what it currently is - and remember, she and Evert were products of 1950's tennis! Graf, Seles et al were a response to Martina's punishing game. Nav's game was a necessary evolution in her quest to overcome Evert's metronomic baseline abilities. They each made the other much better. All these players described are worthy of celebration and honour. I've listened, in person, to commentators the world over - India to the USA, UK to Japan, all agreeing that her achievements are currently unmatched. I've yet to see convincing contra evidence for this assertion, and given the parlous state of the women's game in our time, I can't imagine anyone coming anywhere close.

      @John David Evert.com is a legend, and you could only wish to be half the tennis enthusiast and knowledgeable and fair minded tennis expert she is. And speaking of trying to rewrite history, 9-9 is not a winning head to head no matter how you spin it, despite Martina having more matches in her (82-87) prime than Graf's (88-96 and 99) and purposely avoiding Graf on slow courts after peak Martina got CRUSHED by baby Graf at the 86 Hamburg event and again at 87 Miami's slower hard courts. And Graf leads 4-2 in slam finals which everyone except you would agree if you want a tiebreaker is a far more important one than 4-5 in slams, especialy when the semi final winner went on to lose the final in 2 of those. Pot. kettle. black.
      Navratilova is also 7-10 vs Seles, not a winning head to head. And thankfully for your hero Martina, Billie Jean King kept returning to play on bad knees until nearly 40 since if she retired after 79 she would have a winning head to head with 23 year old world #1 Navratilova, despite every single match being from 77-79 when Martina was aged 20 to 23 and King aged 34 to 36. Ouch. Did I mention world #2 Martina aged 22 and 23 took a 6-1, 6-2 loss to 35 year old King on grass and a 6-1, 6-3 loss to 36 year old King on carpet, her favorite surfaces. Even in their 2nd last meeting at Wimbledon 80 the 23 year old world #1 Martina barely beat a 36 year old King 10-8 in the 3rd set after King served for the match. See this is fun ain't it.

      @grantgoffin4774 3 роки тому +4

      @John David Graf leads Navratilova at 3 of the 4 slams, weeks at #1, Year End #1s. So basically all you have for Navratilova is leading in 1 of the 4 most important tournaments and the 5th most important tournament (YEC). Graf leads Navratilova 4-2 in slam finals which is a far more important stat than 5-4 in slams, particularly when the winner of 2 of the 3 semis went on lose the final (aka 4 of 7 times the match was the title decider Graf won). This all despite that they played more matches (10) in Martina's prime of 82-87, than the 8 they played in Graf's prime of 88-96, and Martina purposely went out of her way to avoid Graf on slower courts after baby Graf thumped peak Navratilova super hard at Hamburg 86, and did again on the slow-medium hard courts in Miami in early 87.
      I also laugh how you trumpet Martina FINALLY getting another win over Graf, her first ever win over prime Graf in 4 years of trying, at the 91 U.S Open, when even that took a whopping 4 years, and took facing Graf in a horrendous year she lost a slam semi to Sanchez 6-2, 6-0 and lost nearly every match she played to Sabatini. I bet Graf aged 30-34 would not have taken a whole 4 years to beat any other fellow all time great in their prime again, not even Serena, the way Martina did Graf. If you want a comparision look at Navratilova's late 80-early 81 results when she had a similar terrible year run of form to 91 Graf, when she lost 3 times to a 15 year old Jaeger (lol), and lost 6-0, 6-0 to Evert, which is about 100 times worse than a single loss to an older still strong Navratilova. Your specific cherry picking of stats to suit your biased arguments and agenda are comical.
      Anyway neither is the GOAT at this point, QueenRena is whether the snow white tennis fans like it or not. I already know from your combative irrationaly biased posts on any video I see you commenting that you are a bitter Navratilova fanboy who hates the fact many more people believe Serena and Graf are the GOAT than your beloved Martina these days. And with Serena's difficulty gaining the slam record the previously heavily underrated Court is now talked up more than Martina too. But it is just something you will have to deal with. No matter how many posts you make slamming Graf, slamming Evert fans including the goddess who runs the Evert fan site and posts countless wonderful matches and videoes for our enjoyment, slamming the Williams sisters, Martina is no longer the consensus GOAT if she ever was. Deal.

      Yes!! This is not pointed out by many. Playing the point with the second ball in your hand (it means your first serve was good), was a bit more common with the older eras, and Steffi was one of the last to do that, even being one of the very few moder era players to that. Why do that? I have no idea. It doesn't make sense, and isn't practical. But players such as Steffi did that.
