That’s the kind of tennis you need to have to beat STEFFI THE GOAT.. Unfortunately, she came down with a muscle pull. Lindsay hung in there.
One and only, Monica :)
Karina's career went downhill after this match. She had improved so much that year but I think losing a number of close matches that year hurt her confidence, especially this one. In late 1997 and 1998, there were small signs that she might have been on her way back but she again lost more close matches (e.g. Testud at the 1997 U.S Open, Davenport at the 1998 Australian Open, etc.). My last real memory of her was at the 2000 Wimbledon where she was on the brink of defeating Seles but lost that match.
A lot of mean comments. I imagine Beverly would have whipped most of her detractors dissing on her below. She certainly enjoyed a brilliant NCAA career at the University of Texas.
Really interesting in that first set when Jennifer started to pull even to see Monica start to throw in some drop shots and high lopping shots, and really target Jennifer's forehand. Monica wasn't always recognised for her tennis brain, but it was one of the very best and she always seemed to have scouted out her opponents' games and knew their weaknesses. Capriati was known to dislike changes of spin and pace, and in those days her forehand was very much her weaker side. It's interesting that when Jennifer reached the top in 2001, she seemed to have worked on her forehand a lot and changed her grip to a more semi western one. As a result, her forehand became much more of a weapon.
Baby Jennifer was my idol ❤
OMG STEFFI THE GOAT schooled a veteran on the tour! Just another day in office for young Steffi. Love ❤
MJF won only 4 points in the second set!
Where Sanchez Habsudova?
Beautiful tennis from two very elegant players ❤
I remember at this time Natasha was using a one handed backhand drive a lot in preference to her normal two handed backhand.
Steffi's beautiful legs.❤❤
Strnadova was pinned as one of the young rising stars of her generation. I think she was junior world no 1. Unfortunately she could not live up to the expectations.
Grande Inés, te queremos!!
thank goodness for your channel :) thank u for uploading all these : brings back wonderful memories
My pleasure.
Wow I never heard so much noise out of Kimiko lol
It's annoying to me at least sadly many women players do that.
I think she got influenced by Seles. Aranza Vicario was also another player who tried to grunt after every shot. When Date came back in 2000’s she even shouted “Come on” after winning the points. That means she always got influenced by things in the era.
MJ played a very good match. However, just like Ferrer vs Federer in men’s tennis, no matter how hard she tried, how close the match became, Steffi could always find a way out. It’s a shame that a good player like her never beats Steffi in professional matches in her career.
Did Ferrer ever beat Federer?
@@stefan33uk nope. Federer leads 17-0 (same as Steffi vs Mary Joe)
@@JacquesHsu Mary J beat Steffi at Cap d Adge 1992.
@@justtennischannel2 Yes, but that’s an exhibition match, not an official one.
@@JacquesHsu Yes, it is. It used to be greatly funded exhibition tournamnent. I loved it. I have some matches, Steffi vs MJF included.
Even though Graf won this match, you can see that she's still finding her form after taking time off at the start of the year due to the German measles. Her footwork especially was not up to her usual level. And she seemed to be seeing the ball later than usual here IMO.
Absolutely. It looks almost like she is pressing too hard, like a car that couldn't get into gear. I remember her matches during that period seemed to have a lot of unforced errors.
@@th8257 100 percent
Graf looked so fit here
0:00 ... Players aren't taught to run themselves out of the point. That is why MJ is doing the smart thing here and shading crosscourt, off a neutral return down the middle. With that forehand, however, Steffi subverts almost all the conventional tennis strategies. If you shade crosscourt and she has a ball in the middle of the court, Steffi is going to flip her hips and hit inside-out. It's the ultimate advantage.
MJ was not a good tennis player! Idk how she's doing commentary work 😂😂😂
Crazy to think Date is naturally left handed - how much better she could have been.
There have been a few players like that over the years. Ken Rosewall, Margaret Court and Maria Sharapova left handed but played right handed. Rafael Nadal the other way around. Naturally right handed but plays left handed.
こんなに激しく打ち合って競った素晴らしい試合の後で、お互いに満面の笑顔で握手するって素敵すぎる
Santrock was a good athlete. Groundstrokes needed tightening.
Date's game matched up well to Graf's....she was able to use her flat groundstrokes to redirect Grafs power to good effect.
And Graf's low slice didn't bother Date
Remember that Kimiko in her late 40's on her comeback beat Sharapova, Penetta, Stosur, Petrova & Muguruza etc exposing the weak era of WTA. 😂😂
I think Graf's slice did bother Date, particularly when Graf sliced to Date’s forehand, if you’ve seen many of their matches Date makes many errors with her forehand when returning Graf’s slice.
Martina Hingis at her best, was truly an aggressive baseliner. I believe this was her comfort zone. Her aggression was in taking control of the point by taking the ball early, hitting with great placement and depth, and having a wide variety of shots to select from. I truly believe she ran into trouble when she was forced out of this aggressive stance by speedy power players who became more consistent, or by power players who became more fit. For example, early Venus was prone to errors, so if Martina could extend rallies, she would often win the match. From 1997-99 Hingis won 9 of their 14 matches. Whereas by 2000, Venus was far more consistent and therefore winning more matches against Hingis. After 2000 Venus won 5 of 7. On the flip side, From 96-97 Hingis won 5 out of 6 matches.against Davenport. This was often because, as she would against most slower players, she would simply out maneuver them or tire them out. After Davenport began to commit more to fitness, she began to dominate Hingis off the ground due to better positioning and would win 11 of their last 17 matches.
early in her career, if Hingis was pulled wide in a rally she'd aggressively strike back, with either a big shot down the line or a daring drop shot (especially on the backhand side). And she'd make it more than she'd miss. As the game became more physical Hingis found it harder to use those same strategies and became more passive, and just tried to extend the rally and wait for an error.
I loved that match. Thanks for posting ❤️ It’s interesting that MJF never really adopted a different strategy after so many losses against Graf. There were basically 3 styles of play that would work against Graf. Mixing it up and retrieving (ASV, Sabatini, Coetzer), relentlessly charging the net (Navratilova) or pressuring her from the back of the court (Pierce, Seles, Davenport, the Williams sisters). In this match, Mary-Jo was giving Steffi what she loved. Nice pace, not too much topspin. I don’t think anyone ever beat Graf playing like this 😅
It was the same with Conchita Martinez and Monica Seles. Conchita never seemed to figure out that her usual way of playing was absolutely useless against Seles 99 percent of the time.
Thank you!! Love the commentary and quality! 🤩 you’re the best 💚
How good of a doubles partnership these two could have been
Rene lost to Steffi 6-0 6-0 twice in her career. She played well in this match.
Hingis at this time she was invisible but at the 2001 Aussie got trashed by Jennifer capriati she was in the best shape of her life and very confident
a lot changed in those 4 years. Capriati became fitter, the overall level of power and athleticism on the women's tour increased, while Hingis was very lethargic and tentative in the 2001 final. At her best, Hingis attacked the points and hit daring shots, she didn't just rally. But from 1999 onwards she started more passively and by mid 2001 onwards, Hingis was started playing powder puff tennis and had no chance against the powerful hitters. That said, even in this 1997 match there were moments when Capriati clearly overpowered Hingis
Capriati didn't improve much but Hingis was declined from the beginning of 2000. There was a transitional period in women's tennis at that time of post Graf & pre Serena era in which Capriati benefitted tremendously. Venus was suck on slower surface like in A.O & F.O. Infact Capriati had more success & consistency in 90's but Seles & Graf was there. Graf was her true nemesis. Without her she might even won a slam in 90's.
@@rajusaha855 no, Capriati improved a lot.. not only was she fitter but she was able to hit the ball harder and more consistently for longer rallies. If you saw her 2001 French Open finals marathon against Kim Clijsters , they would be trading bullets 30+ shots per point. The 90’s Capriati would not have been able to do that. At best she would show flashes of greatness but wouldn’t be able to do it on a consistent basis. She also didn’t just lose to Seles or Graf. She also had some uncharacteristic losses to lower ranked players like Amanda Coetzer. She really improved her fitness, and with that her confidence and belief in herself. Her groundstokes were always text book perfect and she’s always had good eye hand coordination and natural brute strength but they became more lethal when she had to adjust her grip to be more extreme on both sides, allowing her to hit the ball harder but with more margin for error.
@@quiddynope she was not improved. Apart from 3 slams she hardly won any big titles. In 2001 Capriati barely winning the F.O over first time finalist Clijsters by 12-10 & then Hingis choke away 4 match point in 2002 A.O. So even against past prime Hingis & newcomer Clijsters, Capriati struggled heavily. The main reason of her success that there was no GOAT level of players like Graf (who was Capriati nemesis) & peak Seles on the tour .The WTA tour had depth at that time (I agree) but didn't have a consistent champions. Hingis never recovered after her 1999 F.O debacle, Seles was past her prime, Davenport was good but sucks on slower surface same as Venus & Serena yet to reached her peak. Once Serena reached her peak then Capriati stop winning slams. For me Capriati take the huge advantage of the void being left post Graf era & pre Serena era. Infact it terms of her consistency & her result she was best in 90's. At one stage from 1991-93 she reached QF or better in 8 of 10 slams during the height of Graf/Seles era. That was impressive. Without Graf or Seles she might won a slam then & people would said that was Capriati 's peak because in tennis we judge everything solely on slams without looking at circumstances & quality of opponent.
@@rajusaha855 her best results were not 90-93. She lost in the first round of the US open. Nope. 2001 -2004 were her best results. She won 3 grand slams during the time when Lindsay, Serena, and Hingis, Seles, and Mauresmo were around.
Wow, I thought Fulco played very well. I didn't see any big errors from her side. What a unlucky day for her to meet Steffi playing at her best.
Good match!
I remember watching this match live. They joined the second set towards the end of it and Mary Carillo said that Mary Joe actually played well in that first set but Steffi was just that much better. Fernandez stepped it up even more in the second set but couldn't maintain it when it mattered the most. That's probably indicative as to why she never won a major title, as good as she was.
More backhand slice winners than usual
Steffi was on another level during the first half of the 94 season.
Steffi is undeniably the G O A T
1:52 beautiful backhand slice winner down the line from Graf
Love Steffi's attire in the first half of this match. I wonder why she only wore it this one time (and not even a full match)
What are the rules around checking the mark on the clay courts? Can the umpire decline to check them? I remember at the 1986 Amelia Island final, Graf argued a line call and the umpire declined to check the mark.
0:29. ... The timing required for this shot. Try it yourself and you will see what I mean.
Which one, the backhand down the line from Graf? 0:29 seems to be in between points.
I’ve never actually seen that shot before from Graf (high backhand slice down the line, going for an outright winner). Like you say it’s low percentage which is probably why she rarely played it but she pulled it off on this occasion.
@@stefan33uk I had the same reaction. She was such a gifted athlete, able to improvise.
Lol Now i know why mary joe fernandez is always trying to downplay steffi grafs accomplishments and games. Shes a bitter bitch. Got her ass whooped here. She tried it on the second set at least 1996 was steffi graf at her best. Absolute peak of her power. All cylinders were firing
beautiful tennis from both
I wonder was Graf remembering MJF's amazing comeback against Sabatini in 1993 in this match.....she was so close to winning that second set
Graf is not Sabatini.
Steffi does not think like that and as the comment above mine points out. Sabatini although a great player is no Steffi Graf. I have seen several matches Steffi could easily have lost. But she digs deep and plays the big points extemely well. And that is what the great ones do. 😊😊😊😊
Только и делать Штеффи, что вспоминать как сыграла Сабатини против Фернандес в 1993 году. У нее своих игр около 1000 😅
I remember Eurosport didn't show a single point from this match (didn't have ZDF that time), I checked the scores on teletext and was surprised that the match was over.
My Favourite ❤😊
Wiesner seems to try a defensive game style like Arantxa Sanchez, but her shots are too harmless.
The thumbnail reminds me of another picture of Steffi, one of her hitting a forehand. ... That picture is notable because the photographer captured the shadow her body makes when she balances on one leg to hit her forehand. The shadow is in the shape of a bird.
Que bonito juega la Reina del tenis.
We love you Stefanie 😍😍😍
