My old band mate's late 70's Flying V was light and resonant and you could feel the string vibration throughout the guitar. My favorite thing about it was the slightly chunky C-shaped neck and the action though. It felt like you were playing a laser guided missile, everything was so precise and perfect. Plus you could beat the piss outta the thing and it never went outta tune.
@@ITSHAA-yn5zc I absolutely couldn’t agree more with this comment! They make a ‘70s V’ and omit the most important ( in my opinion) feature of a 1970’s Gibson Flying V, the HEADSTOCK SHAPE!!! It’s an insult in my opinion! It just rubs it in in the fact that they made what appears to be ( Ive never played one sadly) a very good, extremely close re-issue 70s V for the Japanese market. So why the f**k couldn’t they be bothered to make a ‘70s V’ that actually looks like a real 70s V ? It’s almost like they’re purposely taking the piss out of their customers! I’m the proud and extremely happy owner of a white ‘79 Gibson V and I absolutely LOVE the thing!!! It’s a truly fantastic guitar. The only thing that lets it down slightly are the tuners. They don’t hold the tuning that well, particularly the G string tuner. I’m considering getting a set of new Kluson ‘vintage style’ locking tuners for it. They appear to have exactly the same footprint so there’s no worry about having to modify the guitar to fit them. While they’re not identical by any means they do sell a chrome tulip set of replacement tuner buttons which look pretty similar to the originals and I would imagine they’ll perform fantastically! Mine still has the original t-top pickups which sound great and also has the original electronics and wiring. Despite the misconception (by people who usually haven’t played one!) that these Vs will be really difficult to play sitting down that couldn’t be any less accurate. Positioned correctly they are pretty much the perfect guitar for practice playing sitting down. Overall just tremendous guitars!
I am a V player, and I'm glad you did this video. I've held and played a 1975 Flying signed by Frank Black of The Pixies. Wonderful sounding and feeling guitar. I play a 2008 Faded Cherry Gibson V and I tell ya, this thing DOES resonate. A luthier working on it commented to me afterward how great it vibrates in the hands, showing that it's really good quality mahogany. It vibrates up the neck freely, and it's gonna resonate even more freely when I put lighter tuners on it soon. I HIGHLY recommend the Faded V's. The finish does wear, but it wears BEAUTIFULLY. This is my main guitar, and I couldn't be prouder of that. I recommend you take the tuner off the headstock when you demonstrate how a guitar sounds Trogly. It dampens the vibration of the guitar's headstock
Hey man I have a 1981 version of this , the only difference is that it's a 3 piece body , I've had it from new , and still play it live regularly, great video.🤘

Funny you're talking about headstock repairs. Anyone that knows the old ''gear trader" store from Huntington Beach would be familiar with Big Mike. He had some beautiful equipment, couple/few Marshall heads from the 70s and the tall Jimi Hendrix basket-weave cabinets, w/ greens and 30 watt black backs. I just mention to give an idea his stuff was very nice, and extremely well cared for even though he played regularly. His main guitar was what you're holding, basically they look like twins. I had never really cared about Vs, until playing his and I was immediately sold. Extremely resonant, like sg's, & LP special.... Anyway, Eddie's guitar tech, Matt used to come in, and he saw Mike's V on a stand and went over and picked it up, played it and remarked how great it was, put it back on the stand and I don't remember if he tripped on the cord, or just thought it was better laid than it was, but as I'm sure you know by now Boom! Snapped right under the truss rod cover, actually the two pieces hung together by the screws. It looked so sad, so, like a broken neck chicken, or maybe a swan, they seem a little more graceful. I think Mike was in shock because he's a pretty vocal Guy usually, and he said nothing. Matt on the other hand was as you'd imagine, astonished apologetic, somewhat incredulous as to how, being Van Halen's guitar tech, he may have done that move of replacing a guitar on a stand more than any ten of us. True to fashion of a professional Road Dog, manager, and if I remember right he even had a partner in an amp building company, he said something to the tune of do u have a case let me take care of this. I can't remember if he took it to Gibson, or an ex head of wood working from Gibson, but when it returned, and pretty quickly, we were hard-pressed to even see the repair. Man the memories from that store... One night I actually found complete books of gold inside an old Hammond organ.
I still have my 79 with block inlays I bought new in in the UK January 1980 and comes out occasionally at OD Saxon gigs and plays great ,Kirk Hammett asked me a couple years ago if I still had it as he saw me play it at a Keystone gig in the bay area in 81on one of our USA tours ,love the demo and my brother has a silverburst 80 V.

It's a Hamer Vector, made in the USA in 1982, and is to date the most amazing guitar I've ever laid hands on. To make the story even better, it was a custom order (cream white, not a stock color for '82) that developed cracks and checking, so the dude who originally ordered this $1000+ axe decided it was junk and sold it to me for $225 in 1986. SCOOOOOOOOOOOORE! It's one of two "NEVER gonna sell" guitars that I own!

Those late 70's V's were perfect. The action was astonishingly low yet never fretted out or any of the other unwanted effects of such low action. Never really seen or played anything as well rounded a 2 humbucker electric guitar since. One of the ultra rare guitars that are just put together so well as regular production they near "played themselves". The medallion V's medallion was to commemorate the Olympics? Er…..oooookay. Awesome axes for sure! Always wanted one of the late 70's V's as in this upload or a Korina original copy. Finding legit versions of either has become pretty difficult.

Fast forward to '04 and family is in a semi pro band and main axe is one of these in SB. Never saw one before. About 5 years ago, i buy a Best Of Albert King disc. Cover shot, same axe!!

Thank you. I had no idea that my perfect blonde '77 V was worth that kind of money. I may quit taking it to gigs. I've owned it since 1980 & would be crushed if anything happened to it. Tuners switched to Grovers before I got it. One more thing, to sit & play these is simple. You just place your upper right leg into the back notch on the guitar. It will sit in perfect playing position & never move an inch. Hilarious!
@@kentfranklin736 I sent it down to a 'luthier.' Someone spray painted it black over the original finish and it had a solid headstock repair but I wanted it to look nicer. The whole situation is really sketchy with that guy, but I do believe I will eventually get them back.
Its crazy how gibson bursted all 4 sides of the body and back of the neck on those.. who would paint over that. Then again I hear silverbursts werent as desirable until Adam Jones came along with them
All of Micheal Schenker's studio( plus the great live album "Strangers in the night") really show how awesome the Flying V is. True balls out Rock & Roll guitar.
I hear you. "Strangers in the night" plus all of UFO'S studio albums showcase Michael Schenker putting the Gibson "Flying V"to great affect. Schenker always seems to get overlooked.
What amp are you playing through, the ZZ top, and Randy riffs you played when it first got dirty sounded delicious. I love it's. Another fella on this thread wrote asking how this 79 compared with the modern Dean ml series? I would be curious as well.
I owned the 1980 “the V” tobacco sunburst. bound body. I never liked the way the neck was attached at the body. It sits up off the body a about half an inch which makes playing on the upper frets a pain. You are really holding on to a chunk of wood at that point. You should show the difference between a 70’s V and the 60’s V where the fretboard comes right down on the body the way it should. I did play the hell outta that V though and sold it for the same price I bought new and it was a road warrior.
I hate the big scratch plate Vs, but for some reason this one doesn't trigger me. You ever thought about doing an Ibanez Rocket Roll V review? 70s Ibanez guitars are awesome. The Ibanez SC210 single pickup is one of my freaky bucket list guitars, would love to see the Troglys take on one!
This is like something you would see James Hetfield play in 1981..... or maybe UFO or MSG group... Lol. I love them though they play so good.. believe it or not my Paul Reed Smith has that same type of resonance and feel you were talking about
@@ScottGreenMusic yeah I think I heard that somewhere before. Just seeing one of these guitars just reminds me of when I was first learning how to play in the early 80s when I was watching dudes like Judas Priest and all the NWOBHM bands all seem to be playing flying V's at the time..lol actually love these guitars man they are great playing and sounding guitars. I owned one years ago like an idiot I traded it away and I miss it to this day it's been 20 years.
2:40 That is not a lyre vibrola, there is really nothing named a lyre vibrola. That is a Gibson Vibrola. The version with the long plate behind it is called the Gibson Deluxe Vibrola, and is sometimes called a lyre vibrola. Also the trems are sometimes called maestro's, but that is incorrect. Check the Gibson catalogs from the 60's.

Looks like a lot of fun
Love the V design
I don't understand the valute hate, j love them!
If it wasn’t for the comfort factor (although I’ve switched to the classical playing position) this would be my all time favorite guitar.
I'm not a V kinda guy, but that guitar is very, very cool.
Nice guitar and demo😀👍
Got any left handed stuff?
I've had 2 70s lefty SGs and a lefty '74 custom

@@Trog Very nice, I just found you a few weeks ago and love what you're doing documenting all this pieces of history.
I feel ya man I'm a lefty too!!!!
He's not lefty
Very nice! Kalamazoo too!!!
Trogly, might be a little late to this but I just today noticed that Reverb has an article on your headless SG.
Hey Mr trogly I love this guitar it's fuppin sweet as can be keep the videos coming I know you will ☮️ bro!!!!!!!!
I have a 1975 Flying V signed by Andy Powell.
Thank you. I had no idea that my perfect blonde '77 V was worth that kind of money. I may quit taking it to
gigs. I've owned it since 1980 & would be crushed if anything happened to it. Tuners switched to Grovers
before I got it. One more thing, to sit & play these is simple. You just place your upper right leg into the back
notch on the guitar. It will sit in perfect playing position & never move an inch. Hilarious!
Late 70s / early 80s flying V in silverburst.. coolest production guitar ever
I do have one of those if it ever gets returned to me
Thats not something Id lend out! Must be to a highly trusted bud, who also doesnt gig with it
@@kentfranklin736 I sent it down to a 'luthier.' Someone spray painted it black over the original finish and it had a solid headstock repair but I wanted it to look nicer. The whole situation is really sketchy with that guy, but I do believe I will eventually get them back.
Its crazy how gibson bursted all 4 sides of the body and back of the neck on those.. who would paint over that. Then again I hear silverbursts werent as desirable until Adam Jones came along with them
Trogley-- You need to play some old Savoy Brown tune to get yer funk on with that fine V-tar!! N I C E AX!!
No mention of Michael Schenker?? WHAT??? LOL "Lights out, lights out in London..." Yesss.....
Schenker always seems to get overlooked.
nice jam bro.....cool vid too
where the neck meets the body the body is a completely different shape
that fiirst tune you played was cool.
Are the one with the pointier head worth more ?
@trog .....Do you remember how much you sold this one for ???
What amp are you playing through, the ZZ top, and Randy riffs you played when it first got dirty sounded delicious. I love it's. Another fella on this thread wrote asking how this 79 compared with the modern Dean ml series? I would be curious as well.
He said in his vids its a marshall of some kind
0:33 “Ligma wood?”
This is an level up to "Ligma balls"
Limba
Also, Austin, why are you wearing your t-shirt inside-out?
I think it was a Wildwood Guitars T-Shirt
@@Trog but at greenscreen part it is definitely inside out O_o. Clearly seen at 6:00
Yes, turned inside out to not show their logo since they did not ask to be a part of this episode
Oh thats a sound!!!
I’m curious, what did this one sell for?
What's the story on late model V's and Explorer pro with smaller body profiles?
How would this stack up against a Dean ML guitar? They seem similar enough in terms of specs and looks
I owned the 1980 “the V” tobacco sunburst. bound body. I never liked the way the neck was attached at the body. It sits up off the body a about half an inch which makes playing on the upper frets a pain.
You are really holding on to a chunk
of wood at that point. You should show the difference between a 70’s V and the 60’s V where the fretboard comes right down on the body the way it should. I did play the hell outta that V though and sold it for the same price I bought new and it was a road warrior.
Did you place the mic and cab in the mariana trench at 11:20? Haha. It's the most muffled guitar tone i've ever heard.
I actually love the big PG style V's. Would even be happy with the Epi 'two knob' style made in the late '90s. btw, pre S/N RR Sr here.
Soo nice
My main guitar in the 80's was a sunburst '70 V.
NICE!
Hey Trogly, did they ever make these 70's Flying Vs in left-handed?
I'm sure they did but it wasn't too many I'm a lefty myself.
This is like something you would see James Hetfield play in 1981..... or maybe UFO or MSG group...
Lol. I love them though they play so good.. believe it or not my Paul Reed Smith has that same type of resonance and feel you were talking about
Hetfield's original V was actually an Epi with a Gibson logo, funny enough!
@@ScottGreenMusic I'm not sure if you mean the white one but I read that his white v he used very early was a fake one and even had a bolt on neck.
Sold my 1980 silverburst and silver sky still got my cherry black one
I like the volute. Why is it less desireable?
Just because it wasn’t on the 50s LP and Flying Vs. I like em too!
My cheap sx vintage strat vibrates a lot in the neck.
Love the look but could never find a V I liked playing .
They also made an 79 anv. Spl
A lot of people don't know is that in a interview with les paul he was the one who came up with the. Idea but toled Gibison not to put his name on it.
Check the Gibson catalogs from the 60's.
oyhe94 uncorrect is uh.. incorrect.
@@davidzumbrun My incorrect spelling of the word incorrect has been corrected.
The body looks slightly thinner ???
Albert king played one you can see it in the vid where he played it with SRV on utube !!!!!!
