- In this video I will teach you how to master your vocal tracks using Apple's Logic Pro Audio Software.
This is ideally suited to those of you producing UA-cam Videos, creating podcasts or doing voice over work for commercial productions.
I take you through my 5 step process and show you how to normalize the audio level, apply noise reduction, add compression, EQ and finally monitor the loudness level so that you can export it out at the right volume.
If you are having trouble getting the audio clip to normalize:
You need to enable destructive editing. You can do this by clicking on Preferences Audio - Advanced, you'll see a check box for Audio that allows destructive editing. With that option set, you'll be able to select between the non-destructive track editing or the destructive audio file editing.

Great to hear. Glad you liked the video. For audio level compliance you can use the loudness Meter under the Audio FX. The Loudness meter shows your audio level in LUFS which is generally what Audio platforms specify.

You're very welcome. Yes I recently got rid of my monthly Adobe fees too. It was fine initially but as the prices started to rise it no longer made sense to keep it going when there are so many other alternatives. Logic is a dedicated audio production tool that allows you to do so much with audio and music composition and in my opinion is about the best you can get. Audition is pretty good for voice over edits but given the choice I would pick Logic any day. Thanks for checking out the video and for the positive feedback. Greatly appreciated!

Also since you're clearly an expert, I currently record with a rode videomicpro plus (talking head videos) into my h1n. Is it worth it to get an H5 or even H6 to leverage XLR? Thanks man, subbed.
Hey there. Glad to hear that you found this video helpful. I haven't done all that many on Logic but may do some more soon. Have a fair bit of content on my channel about creating videos etc and more coming there too. As for the connection of the Rode Video Mic Plus it only has a 3.5 cable so to be honest I don't think it would sound any different using a 3.5 to XLR adapter to get it into the recorder. However that being said the H5 and H6 have way better pre-amps so in that respect you may hear the difference in audio quality.

hey there I'm looking for a good DAW for VA. I'm not really into composing music only recording and editing voice overs etc. I have Audition and Logic and I'm trying to find out the right one for me.
Why u quit with Audition? Is it to complicated? What r the pro and cons?
For some video projects - I've also worked with Premiere Pro and Finalcut and in the end I had a lot of fun with the Adobe programs. At first it seems to complicate especially After Effects but I get used to it.
So I dunno if I stick with Adobe Cloud or I use one Apple program for my VA Projects.
@@susannalilia3143 For Voice over work Premiere Pro and Audition are more than adequate. I compose music so I have always used logic for audio and I really do like the audio tools it provides to master vocals. Both Premiere and Audition have pretty much the same options available so if you already have access to them via adobe creative cloud no real reason to go to logic. I decided to go back to Logic as I ended up cancelling my Adobe Membership to save money and now I use Da Vinci Resolve for Video and Logic for Audio.

Great guide for beginners in Logic. Thanks. Only comment: destructive editing is something you might not want to do. There are several manners to pump the sound without affecting the original file. Then, for novice users, this is something that should be mentioned.

Never heard of the LUFS before, I can't believe I hadn't known about it.
Question - if the project is higher than -14, why do we turn down the gain on the FX modules to fix this instead of just 'turning it all down'? (Not very pro at Logic as you can tell).
Great to hear that you found the video helpful. Certainly you can also turn down the volume on the master track. However if you have a mix of music and vocals you might find that and individual track is the one that is going over the limit so in that case you may adjust that track to get the right reading on the loudness meter.
You're an excellent teacher - clear, concise, and thorough. Do you have any suggestions for reducing mouth clicks? Besides improving my vocal technique (hydration, biotene, mouthwash, apple, etc.) are there any filters or settings within Logic Pro that can spare me the tedium of nano-skinny deletions of the offending clicks? The manual method is OK for 3-5 minute stories, but I'm about to record an audiobook and I'm worried it'll take me forever to clean it up completely. Thank you.
Thanks so much. Glad you found my tutorial helpful! There is a way to automate the reduction of breaths and subtle mouth clicks using a gate but to be honest I think it can often sound a bit in authentic. it can be really hard to refine the gate to cut in and out at the right time so inevitably you end up still hearing some of these sounds, depending on how loud they are. I may do a follow up at some point demonstrating how the gate can help reduce unwanted noise. In the meantime if you want to check it out try applying the dynamics/noise gate effect and adjust the threshold and reduction dials and see if you can use it in this way. As I pointed out though its not always the best way to go and from my experience doesn't match doing it manually.
Izotope mouth-declick is excellent. Comes in RX standard.

You are very welcome. Easiest way to do this is to click on The mixer icon on the top left so that the channels line up in a grid left to right. Then hold down option on any effect and drag it to the next track and it will copy it across. Do this one at a time with all effects. Another option is to use the duplicate track icon next to the plus button and it will duplicate the track with all its effects. Then you can drag audio clips form the other track onto it.

Very helpful video, thank you. Because I'm avoiding destructive editing on my source files, what I did was bounce my mixed audio project to generate a new aif file. If I use the new aif file, will the destructive changes ONLY be made to that file? Or will they somehow still link back to the source files and modify those as well?@@Touchtechnologyreview

Recording vocals in mono and keeping them as a mono track is ideal for podcasts and face to camera videos etc. it kind of makes them sound powerful, clear, and upfront. Recording vocals in stereo makes them sound wide, large, and soft so tends to be used when recording singers possibly commercials films etc where you want a more natural sound. So you certainly could use the stereo spread plugin to help achieve that from a mono recording. PS thanks for the sub!

I'm using a sm 57 mic for VO. I've got a lot of popping and mid to low level jumps. Tried everything but guess it needs a Pop filter and maybe a slight direction and proximity change? Thanks for the vid!
Yes you definitely need a popfilter, it will reduce significantly, you could also try changing your proximity to the microphone and your gain levels.
That should solve the problem. For recordings you can’t remake you can try the isotope rx 8 deplosive plugin, works like magic✨

Aaarrgh! Sibilance! Not silibance. That said...great video and thank you. BTW you said Davinci Resolve is your audio editor of choice? Do you mean video editor? Or are you editing audio in Fairlight?
I know I wish I could go back in and edit that, but alas too late. I stand corrected on that. Sibilance it is. Yes I do use Davinci Resolve as my main video editor right now, I will use Fairlight the audio section within Resolve for many youtube video projects when I am in a rush to get the project out as it has all the filters I need. Great EQ and the limiter is also quite good but the Compressor is far more limited than Logic. I feel I can get a better sound when using Logic so I use it for projects that are more commercial in nature or for Podcasts.

When I double click on the audio file at the beginning, the file option doesn't show up. Just track & smart tempo. How do I find the normalize otherwise?

Is there a way to increase or reduce the sound level of individual takes to match one another before merging them?
If the audio is on a seperate track you can do this quite easily. However if the two are on the same track you have to cut it up and adjust each clip as needed.
please how do you make your rode popfilter more near from the mic i want to make the same on my rode mic
My rode has a filter built into the shock mount. It came with the mic, and and it is close. Otherwise if you have one of the circular pop filters these can often be pushed in close depends on the handle and shock mount you have.
hey can someone help me, as I cant seem to find a file option as shown on 2:23 , I can only see track and smart tempo
don't bother I got it just enable it from Preferences>Advanced features, the top box the "audio editing"

No you don't need to apply all of them. It depends on the style of sound you want. This is kind of aimed at getting that impactful podcast or radio sound. If you want a more natural subdued audio then perhaps just normalizing the audio and a little bit of EQ would be enough. Adding a compressor with a light touch can then help even out the audio and make it more present. But you could forgo the limiter.

Absolute beginner here. When I double click on the audio, I see "Track" and "Smart Tempo" but no "File" option. Additionally, Functions only shows me Rename Regions, Selection Based Processing and Apply Selection based processing again. Help please!

2:20 It doesn't show "file" option in my Logic Pro... I only have the other two
why threshold of deesser at 0?
For the normalisation process, when I double click the audio, I don't get the option for "file", I only see "track" and "smart tempo".
Click on the file tab first. Then click on Functions, Normalize.

I don't understand how you say that it should be -14 LUFS in multimeter while the sound is clipping red in the audio 1 column in the bottom left. I thought we were supposed to keep the volume in the green ?
The -14 LUFS reading is the measurement standard to set to. Then the mix output meter shows you the level on the overall output or each track. You can adjust the volume of the audio tracks until you see it at around -6DB to -1DB. Sometimes at this level you might see a slight movement in the Red which won't affect the overall reading or average volume. If the meter stays solid red then that is peaking and will sound way too loud so in this case get it down to around -6DB.
@@Touchtechnologyreview thanks for your response. Maybe I'm slow but I don't understand. Up until this point it was always emphasised to me that the volume should always be kept green- this meant it shouldn't really exceed -6db.
But here you're saying the volume should aim to be around -14 LUFS all while the audio output volume is exceeding -6d into the orange and red.
Could you explain to a layman like myself in simple terms what you mean here?
You also say that we can adjust the volume of the mix. Is there a simple way to do this? Do we use the limiter to do this. If the volume is too high do we simply use the Limiter to bring it down?
It could be my monitors but there seems to be some ringing in your audio.
Not sure why, can't hear it at this end. It is pretty hot as I maxed the compressor on this recording. Sometimes it is better to back off on the limiter and compressor if you want to really take in to account all possible audio set ups.

Yeah that is the correct way to say it. I got it wrong in this video, once I realised it was too late to edit it.
