I just ran into this same exact problem and this video was a huge help, thank you so much for posting this! So hard to find anything related to this issue online with so many different things it could be. I just ordered the same new switch assy and will post my results tomorrow. Thanks again!
I noticed this backplate does not line up with my bolt patterns for yamaha also. Yes, a simple fix is to make new holes, but maybe you can remove new switch from the new backplate and install them on the original backplate?
Our backplate was a little weathered so we never thought of only replacing the switch so we can’t tell you whether it comes apart or not. However if yours is still in good condition then that would definitely be something to try so you can reduce the holes drilled into your boat
Hey brother. Are these key switches pretty much the same for most Yamaha motors? I have a Yamaha 40hp center console. Thank you for any advice you can give.
I personally don’t have experience with other key switches for Yamaha motors. I would expect they’re pretty similar, but I suggest to compare the model and the parts list for your specific motor. I often find good schematics for my Yamaha motor and all parts at Crowley Marine website. it should show the part numbers which you can use to look up compatible parts on eBay or other websites.
This one is available on Amazon.ca as we are in Canada. Just want to remind you that it is not an OEM part and the screw holes may not line up perfectly if you are replacing an original switch. www.amazon.ca/dp/B07XFJKBVM

This fixed my problem! My ignition ended up just completely going out, the new amazon one worked and was plug and play. Thanks again!
@4455336 so glad it worked that’s why we post these because you never know who you can help with them. Tight lines 🤙
