For those of you who are to young to recognize what you just experienced, let me explain: This is talent! Notice how there isn't any dancers or light show. This is how you deliver a performance so powerful that the audience forgets (for a moment) the troubles of their own individual lives. Notice how the audience is suspended in time in that moment. And notice: No one got shot! No one is fighting! It's sad that I have to point that out but, yeah. I have to point this out. Our songs were about love, joy and romance. And when we hear our music today it brings back memories of our youth. This is what is missing from contemporary R&B/hip-hop/rap/overly sampled music today.
Dennis Edwards was absolutely the best replacement for David Ruffin. He has that strong raspy, soulful voice like David's voice, but Dennis's voice is stronger and he has the old Baptist minster edge to it. Man do I miss this kind of music that I grew up on. Because the junk that they produce today is not even worth listening to. Thank God I still have my ol' school music to listen to!
The Temptations were incredibly lucky to have Dennis right after David. Dennis helped the group turn into a soul group that touched some serious issues with their songs and really carved his own path with the group. Then they got lucky again with Ali Ollie Woodson who was a hybrid of Dennis and David. Three great singers all in the history of one group! Amazing!
Dennis Edward's my favorite Temptations but it cannot be denied the enormous talent of both David Ruffin and Ollie Woodson. All amazing soul singers. Rest Emperors of Soul, rest...
Paul Williams was the reason that the Temptations were signed to Motown in the first place and Eddie Kendricks has had the most successful solo career including a Grammy nomination! Cannot forget these two great singers.
I agree. I think the people who grew up with Temptations in the 60s have a very strong emotional attachment. I came along later. So my emotional attachment to any of them is nil. I am just about the voices. They each had their own voice. Dennis' voice is nothing like David's. Dennis is like that old time country preacher back in the woods with a wood floor. Powerful.
SADLY WE LOST THE GREAT DENNIS EDWARDS...ONE OF THE GREATEST SOULSINGERS EVER..."A SONG FOR YOU" IS YR MASTERPIECE AND THE TEMPTATIONS WILL BE YR LEGACY...THANK U NOW REST MY FRIEND YOU did WELL...
Donny's and The Temptation's version of this song are my absolutely favorites. Donny and Dennis sing the same some, but each has their own interpretation. Dennis's takes us back to the Black Church, so does Donny, but in a different way. Donny's version has more strings. Each version is beautiful.
Charles Stevens ... Yeah bro. I just found out that a song I wrote, played drums and sang lead on for my band in 1977 is on UA-cam! Go check it out. It's called Don't Act Surprised, by Charisma.

I recall watching this episode of Midnight Special. The background harmonies the Tempts displayed on this song was awesome! What you heard on the album is what you got live. It seems the quality of talent today just can't cut it. I am glad to have witnessed their talent..
The Tempts did not win a Grammy until Dennis was at the mic as lead singer. Also, under his rein as lead singer they had many many gold and platinum albums. The Tempts really came into their own with Dennis as their lead singer. Kudos to the great Dennis Edwards.
You have to remember that they was kids when they first Got together, as they got older they became better! but during the time when Dennis came they was just evolving to who they really were.... So yes Dennis was part of that Transformation!!!!! but that whole group was who they were..... Everyone 1of them boys was singers.let's not lose focus "smoke Robinson" wrote 99% of the songs.... He could gave that song to anybody in that group and it would've done the same thing because it was The temptations, it was just that timing.
Well, they should have won a Grammy before then, in my opinion! The Grammys never made a lot of sense. I'd like to look at who won all those years before...maybe tonight :)
The whole album (title-"A Song For You", cover-all black and all the songs) are stellar. This album was genius because it showed the Temptations as true balladeers!
If you remember, there was a TV commercial for that LP. Whatever I was doing in the house, I would stop in my tracks and be swept away by it. The last few seconds of the commercial had the ending of "Song For You". That always ran through my spirit. Phew!
Rest in Heaven Dennis Edwards. You left us almost a yr. ago. I was in High School when you became a member of the Temptations. I’ve listened to The Temps. music ever since.
