One question I have about planes used with shooting boards, do you want a plane blade that is sharpened dead on square to the sides of the blade? It seems that for general use, you want a very slight arc to prevent blade lines/ridges in the finished piece. I was thinking that with a shooting board plane you would want the cutting edge perfectly straight, even on the shooting board planes that have a skewed blade.

Thank you for planing MDF. I often find I can sneak up on precision by hand planing edges of plywood and mdf even after careful work with a table saw. I can always resharpen after.
I'll give credit that you are one of the very few people I've seen who uses shooting boards practically. I think they're as essential as a bench. However, I was taught these are the basics. What I think will really impress your viewers is to show them how to use custom angle jigs in the boards to make compound angled boxs/trays. Example, A 70° 'square' in the mitre jig will rip the compound, a 20°fence edge tool will offset the angle and rim so it all sit nice and flush on the surface Make 2,wooden hinge them together and you have a perfect compound mitred box. You could even make a custom angled shooting boards to make any number sided fluted forms.
I always appreciate your videos, tutorials and instructions. I would dearly love to make one of these but without a good tablesaw and the various jigs I will have to keep looking. Keep up the great work.
I built one of these a couple of years ago. It works great. I found that if for any reason the miters do not produce a 90 degree corner, the angle can be corrected by moving the lateral adjusting leaver to make slight changes to the miter.

Great looking shooting board, I could use that for base boards/trim. Could you use a 45 degree router bit on the mdf base instead of using the table saw so you wouldn't have to dial in the table saw? Obviously that cut with a router would need to be done at the beginning
I built this over the weekend. Got to use it for the first time yesterday. It worked perfectly. I got exact 45° cuts. I did have to cut the 45° cut in the jig twice. I needed to refine the 45° and make it a little bit more accurate, and also I needed to make the groove a little deeper in the board.

Great idea! I like making boxes but avoid miters because I can never get the corners perfect. Now I will only need to be perfect once- when I build the shooting board.

On your regular shooting boards you always flip the piece and do a bit of a chamfer and then work up to that, to prevent tear-out. Here it would be difficult but is it also not necessary becasue the "fence" is zero clearance because of the braking in?
Merry Christmas Rob Another great idea and another tool to make to go with the wooden hinge kit I bought off you recently. With the benefit of hindsight, may I suggest making the base a little longer to start with in leu of adding a bit latter. We all have 20/20 hindsight. To set up my table and miter saw for 45 degrees I make 4 cuts to get a box this exaggerates the error 4 times. I also ensure that the fence is parallel to the blade because that will put the 45 degrees out. Maybe another video topic tuning up a table saw to get perfect 45 degrees cuts😁. Always wanted to make one of these for wider boards. I've made 4 regular ones for a hand tool class I teach to do 45° for picture frames but they only handle about 1-1/4" wide boards. I was a little upset with some of the precision I achieved on the board (retired machinist here so I'm too picky for my own good sometimes.) However, the 45° miters it makes are perfect! Just looking at the piece at the top that the plane rides on. If there was any chance it may sag over time. You might could invert a piece of plywood across vertically behind that piece. Somewhat like truss. To hold it up. Hope you see what I'm trying to say.... If I build one I will incorporate it into mine.
Rob, can you tell us a little about that monster engineer's square that you have? Is it a Starrett? So many the times I wished for something that size that I could rely on.
I bought it on Kijiji, which is a Canadian version of craigslist up here in an auction. It came from the rust belt in Ontario, which is basically our previous manufacturing area so no I can’t tell you exactly what it was used for in this day, but it was designed for testing flatness.
Having made something that looked a lot like this, but with out the benefit of a table saw, I would have been much more interested in how Rob would have tackled it without that saw. I used a hand held circular saw to rough the long 45deg guide, and it felt like cheating. Given how many YouYube wood workers show making mitre corner boxes with just their table saws, I reckon it is those without such tools who would find this kind of shooting board most useful.
😮 Just wow. The tactics you use to create things like this are incredible. I have one question, on a Cosman shooting board the back, the part the work piece is held against, is off set toward the front a few inches. Why is that not done here?
Because on the straight shooting board there is only a tiny strip of wood the sole of the plane is held againt and that has a tendency for users whe they shoot through a piece to pull the plane into the shooting board. Pulling the fence back a few inches prevents this. On this miter board the plane is riding on two supports so its held very solidily and that same problem dies not exist

Rob, I am having some tear out/spelching on the backside of the the fence after the plane iron passes the work. Any ideas on best way around this? It's mostly just annoying, but was wondering as I never hear the sound from your planes/videos that mine makes when using it and getting that tear out. Thanks!

Would there be more plane stability with the piece at the 45° angle? Keeping the plane flat on its side. (I'm only 3 minutes in, so... this could have been discussed already)
What you are thinking about is called a donkey ear and that is another way to achieve the same thing. BUt no there is not a stability issue of one over the other
Not sure I need one of these, but almost worth building it just for the fun of it. One obstacle is that I don’t have a table saw so I’m thinking through how I would use a plunge saw and rail set up. Has anyone used that setup to try and build this project?
Merry Christmas Rob. Is there any need for a back bevel on a 45 miter, similar to what you do when shooting a 90 degree piece? I'm getting some tearout on my small box miters and have been trying to use a chisel to ease the back edge, with only limited success.
In this particular design there is a fence against the edge of the piece preventing blow out so no not needed, but its all about the shooting board design not the angle
In that case I would cut all angles super precise the first time then just line them up using your finger to feel if everything is lined up (Your finger can detect very small amounts)
@@RobCosmanWoodworking I wasn’t clear on my question. I was asking for an alternate way to make the “V” cuts that will serve as the cradle for the hand plane since I cannot make the cuts with my TS but still want to build the jig. Maybe a v-Groove router bit or possibly construct a sled?
hi rob and co. im getting ready to build this shooting board as well (i have already built the others you demonstrated) . In this build is there any problem with the blade impacting the jig itself? thanks and as always love the channel, love PHP
I have an almost identical jig, and the only impact I've had is accidentally having the blade too far advanced and taking a bit of wood off the end stop. Not a big deal though, doesn't affect performance except maybe making the chances of blowing out the end of your workpiece a bit higher, but you can stop that with a simple knife line. The iron will take a slice or two out of the rails that guide it, but I just make sure to use a plane of the same width consistently ( a 6 or 7) rather than a 4 or three that might ride on the ramp where the slice was taken before by the wider plane. Hope that makes sense!

Every time I watch one of these videos it ends up with the same catch 22 problem... you already need a tool that can cut a true 45 in order to make a jig to can cut a true 45. If I had a table saw that could already mitre cut accurately then I woudn't need a mitre shooting board, but I would be able to build one.
I will never understand making something and calling it 3/4" and then it's 1/16 thinner. It ruins any and all plans you have. And try to find router bits those sizes.
Can't be done with hand tools, I guess. I only wish this channel was less oriented to power tools. Can't afford and don't have space for a tablesaw. And benchtop tablesaws are junk.

As a 56 year old trying to get into woodworking you have taught me a lot that I can incorporate into my builds.

I usually "burn an inch" when measuring diagonals to avoid my missing connecting with the end of the tape the same each way.

I would love to build one of these but like most Brits, I don’t have a table saw. How would you go about building one with just hand tools and a track saw?

Thanks Rob! Nice helpful video. You missed an opportunity to build an elevated aux fence for your table saw rather than screw on the extra piece. Do you put any CA glue into the MDF screw hole before you put the screws in? How long do you anticipate this shooting board lasting?
I did not add any glue to the screw holes. I think it will last for years

Thanks for a great video Rob! I built something similar but it's a little small, and a bit clunky, so a great opportunity to upgrade. My only question would be how would you create the v channel if you don't have a table saw. I can think of a couple of possible ways but would love to have your thoughts.

I would hand cut two opposing 45 degree pieces and glue them against each other
Would there be more plane stability with the piece at the 45° angle? Keeping the plane flat on its side. (I'm only 3 minutes in, so... this could have been discussed already)
What you are thinking about is called a donkey ear and that is another way to achieve the same thing. BUt no there is not a stability issue of one over the other
Not sure I need one of these, but almost worth building it just for the fun of it. One obstacle is that I don’t have a table saw so I’m thinking through how I would use a plunge saw and rail set up.
Has anyone used that setup to try and build this project?

Merry Christmas Rob. Is there any need for a back bevel on a 45 miter, similar to what you do when shooting a 90 degree piece? I'm getting some tearout on my small box miters and have been trying to use a chisel to ease the back edge, with only limited success.
In this particular design there is a fence against the edge of the piece preventing blow out so no not needed, but its all about the shooting board design not the angle
I want to make one but my Incra fence will not allow the 45 cut from both sides. Any ideas for an alternate method? Maybe with a track saw?
In that case I would cut all angles super precise the first time then just line them up using your finger to feel if everything is lined up (Your finger can detect very small amounts)
@@RobCosmanWoodworking I wasn’t clear on my question. I was asking for an alternate way to make the “V” cuts that will serve as the cradle for the hand plane since I cannot make the cuts with my TS but still want to build the jig. Maybe a v-Groove router bit or possibly construct a sled?
hi rob and co. im getting ready to build this shooting board as well (i have already built the others you demonstrated) . In this build is there any problem with the blade impacting the jig itself? thanks and as always love the channel, love PHP
I have an almost identical jig, and the only impact I've had is accidentally having the blade too far advanced and taking a bit of wood off the end stop. Not a big deal though, doesn't affect performance except maybe making the chances of blowing out the end of your workpiece a bit higher, but you can stop that with a simple knife line. The iron will take a slice or two out of the rails that guide it, but I just make sure to use a plane of the same width consistently ( a 6 or 7) rather than a 4 or three that might ride on the ramp where the slice was taken before by the wider plane. Hope that makes sense!

You could build this by hand. Just get everything correctly sized up and test before glueing and screwing

Every time I watch one of these videos it ends up with the same catch 22 problem... you already need a tool that can cut a true 45 in order to make a jig to can cut a true 45. If I had a table saw that could already mitre cut accurately then I woudn't need a mitre shooting board, but I would be able to build one.
With lots of test cuts and fitting, you don't need a tool that has 45°
with a #5 plane you can get 45 deg, just takes a little time.
Does it matter what kind of plane to use for your shooting board? What kind do you prefer to use?
Length from blade to toe and weight are the two biggest factors. Blade width increases capacity through not a big deal. I use the 5 1/2

I will never understand making something and calling it 3/4" and then it's 1/16 thinner. It ruins any and all plans you have. And try to find router bits those sizes.
For baltic birch its made in Europe so its really made to 25 mm, 3/4 is the closets to it but not exactly 3/4
That tables saw looks pretty close to your hands!! Therefore it's Unsafe!!
Not at all. Safe or unsafe is all about having ot not having the wood under control
Can't be done with hand tools, I guess. I only wish this channel was less oriented to power tools. Can't afford and don't have space for a tablesaw. And benchtop tablesaws are junk.
