Great post John. I have been using a ramp for mitres for some years but I knocked this up after seeing video and it has worked a treat, thank you
Glad the video was useful John.
So glad I've seen your video John. Just about to make one of these and this one looks much better and easier to use, Thank You!
Glad to help
Nicely done. Thanks!
Continue to enjoy the videos John! Keep going ☺️
Excellent, much more simple than a Wearing mitre shooting board. Thanks!
While I only need to do a little basic woodworking, I have picked up so many tips from your videos. Thank you so much.
Glad to help
Thank you for your video. I made this board using your directions in about an hour. It worked perfectly right away! Brilliant!!🇨🇦
You're welcome!
John, I replicated your miter shooting board and it works beautifully. Everything else I’ve tried has failed but this works because it shows you when things are not square and where corrections are needed. Thanks
Glad to help!
Great shooting board. I'll be making this soon.
Excellent video! That jig is now on my to-do list. Thank you!
You are very welcome
Hello John,
Great idea. Great for jobs that require a miter. I love these jigs. congratulations. Thank you for sharing. See you. I wish you a nice new week.
Thank you
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed see you.
Super stuff John!!!
Awesome, John! Fantastic work! 😃
I'm definitely going to build one!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Glad to help!
Fantastic! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Thank you!
Wish I had found your channel sooner, I was in Ireland the last 10 days of Sept. Had a great time and celebrated my 75th birthday there.
Happy belated birthday, hope you had a good time in Ireland
Thanks John !
No problem 👍
thanks, i need to make one of these this weekend. im new and i am just starting to make boxes. thanks again
Glad to help!
Great video John nice mod to the normal shooting board.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice one !!
I like that it has adjustable fence, I think it's what I'll make, thanks !!!
I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Perhaps an alternative method of cutting the 45 degree angle on the top piece of ply would be on the router table with a 45 degree bit. Just a thought.
Nice design. Less complex than all the other ones I've seen on YT. Seems the "kiss" principle always works better.
Good stuff john! Just getting seriously into the handtools and am in the market voor shooting boards! Highly likely I'll be making this or something really like it in the coming months :)
Hope its helps Dirk
Okay, thank you for your responce
Good video!!! As always the best content!!! Looking forward for the 50k subscriber
Thanks
I like this I.m going to have to make mysejf one!
Glad it was useful Kevin
Nice one mate :)
This video was exactly what I was looking for! I have been researching making this type of shooting board AND track saws. Where can you buy and what do you call the bench dogs that reference the track saw to 90 degrees. I am very interested in this setup. Thanks for a great video!
😊😊😊😊😊
Hi John, Great project to do and you made it look simple. You mentioned some of your other shooting boards. Can you send me the episode and the date it was posted?
Keep up with your high-production values!
Stay Safe,
Steven
Where have you been we miss you John, hope you and yours are keeping well
I'm extremely busy with work, so I haven't had a minute to make anything.
Possibly more of a general shooting board question, but how do you prevent the plane blade removing material from the board edge? Imagine this would eventually bring it out of square.
The front of the plane runs on the work piece which is slightly proud of the fence, you are working back to the square edge so you don't remove material from it. Although it can happen and over time and the jig can be worn out.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed Surely this puts the plane angle slightly out? Maybe I'm overthinking it and should just build one to find out!
This would be an issue if you were using a rabbeting plane where the blade spans the entire width of the plane. However, you will use a bench or miter plane where the mouth opening is narrower than the plane's sole leaving a small area of sole on either side of the mouth (and blade) -- this is what prevents the plane from cutting into your shooting board. Advancing the blade further than it has been before will cut deeper into the shooting board, but the plane will still track along the same path due to that thin area of plane's sole and the portion of the shooting board that this area rides against. Hope that helps.
That looks simple and very effective.
Is there a reason for the extra space behind the fence? If you did put the fence aligned with the nicely squared back edge of the base, it could simplify the initial placement before fine tuning the angle, and would give you a bit more working room from the same sized components.
This does assume accurately parallel edges to the fence, so aligning its back edge orients its front. Without a table saw I guess that is not as good an assumption.
Its to allow for the length of the plane, you want the plane to reference the square edge all the way through the workpiece
Great video John. I just need to figure out how to make this without a tracksaw and bandsaw 🤪😵
Can be done with hand tools, the 45 degree angles can be made with a hand plane. A circular saw with a straight edge for a guide will do most of it to.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed I'll give that a go 🤩
Hi John, thanks for yet another practical jig, that I will certainly build. Can you let me know what that metallic tool you were using to check the straight edge of the mitred practice timber. It looks quite useful.
Its just a combination square, if that's the tool you mean.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed thanks. I’m not sure I have soon that type here in Australia, but I will try to have a better look. Any chance you know where you picked your one up from?
G'Day MACCA!! I rarely use a hand plane but my mitres are crap and this might be the solution I need!! Would you consider selling plans mate?
Hello, excuse the question, but wouldn't a bevel up plane with a smaller angle be better?
I ask because I would like to buy a plane for this I work it. I was thinking of the Stanley 1-12-137, but I have some doubts, I seem to see that you use a plane with a quidni bevel down counter iron. Can you clarify my ideas?
Thank you
Am I wrong or the plane is also biting into the shooting board itself ? (on the 45° bottom guide)
Hi John,
My 1st time here. U seldom c vids on making miter jigs u can use on a box. Thx 4 sharing.
I have a ?.
I don't quite get the purpose of the 4th nail. The 1 not n line with the others. Could u clarify plz?
Nice video John. Question for you. Your old plane cabinet is still on the wall, is there a reason. I have no explanation why but every video I watch my eye is drawn to an empty cabinet. lol. Side note I'm starting to make a table top bench moxon vise. Watched your videos on it. Probably 6 times writing notes as I go.
what keeps the plane from eating into the plywood surface or the fence?
I would like to understand it too.
Hi John, this was a great idea and project. I will need to be making one for myself soon. I am also pretty interested in the fabric hood I see around your miter saw. Is this something you made or is that commercially available somewhere? Thank you
I made it from an old gazebo, an old tent or similar material will work also
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed I believe I have some waxed canvas that might work well. Did you follow a pattern or just sort of place it and figure it out as you went? Thanks so much for your assistance on that.
You say "45" so much cooler than the rest of us...
Ha ha thanks
Farty foyve !
This is exactly what I need but I only have hand tools so can’t get that accuracy😢
I made one with hand tools only, you can get that accuracy. Check out my donkey eared shooting board video
Bean trying to find someone tell him to do this for a year almost
Perhaps a silly question but.. does the shooting board itself get planed too?
Yes, a little. The key is that the blade doesn't go all the way across the sole of the plane; there is an edge on both sides. So the plane will leave a small lip on the very bottom of the shorter 45 degree edge. The body of the plane will stay on that small lip easy enough, as long as you keep enough pressure on the right side of the plane, which is riding on the larger 45 degree laminated board.
If you were to try and do this with a Carriagemaker's bench plane (e.g. a Stanley No10) or rebate bench plane, then it won't work because the blade goes across the width of the plane and so wouldn't leave a small lip for the plane to ride on.
I need to make this farty five degree jig too!
Why doesn't the plane eat into the bevel on the plywood?
It will at first, but the blade doesn't go all the way to the edge of the plane body, so a little "bumper" will form.
While I only need to do a little basic woodworking, I have picked up so many tips from your videos. Thank you so much.
