Common mistakes at the start:
If your head gets messed up when you do the shrinkwrap, make sure you join the head sculpt and body sculpt beforehand. ctrl+j for join.
If when extruding the neck down, your verts all seem to go to one side, make sure your snapping magnet (on the top bar) is turned off.
you literally saved me right now. i was about to give up now after so much work because i didnt know what i was doing wrong. please feel very appreciated by me you saved my week :D
Thank you buddy. I was wondering what I was doing wrong.
But then how will you select the target object
I did that but for some reason my head gets messed up anyway :(
@@GerN7 same, can someone tell us what to do please ?
At 48:27, when you chuckled to yourself after you hid the sculpt and got confirmation that yes, you did just accurately retopologize that entire model, I felt that.
Haha feels good to finally finish retopo!
@@BranSculpts A question. Does it need to be a high poly mesh for the sculpt? Or can you work with anytype of basemesh for the retopo redo, as long as its smooth/ detailed enough?
2mio verts ... one crashed my system multiple times. Even after i changed to gpu.
Fixed it by joining the whole thing with a lower mesh size, to get a 250k mesh.
Is there any downside / upside useing more or less verts before you redo the retopo?
Now starting to do the retopo redo. I skipped the head, as i don't actually need it for my stylized version with 2d facial expressions. So i am doing that last and simplified.
PS: Scultping really sits well with me. Probably need more practice and some anatomy courses for non stylized stuff. But many thanks again for the series.
Could be wrong but I seems like they are laughing at "Let's hide the body"
This man is a wizard. I could never find a way to bring my drawings to life and your method has helped me understand digital sculpting so much! Thank you for putting all this info in one place!!!
Wow, thank you!
yo this episode took me SOOOOOO LONG! but we OUT HERE BABYYYY
Yeah , I just finished 🙌. Let's go 🎉
Don't think I could have wished for a better way to learn sculpting, this series is amazing! Thank you so much for making all of this free for everyone, it makes the process of learning sculpting so easy and fun!
I love to help people learn! Never stop creating!
I really cannot express how helpful your videos are. As a beginner 3D artist whose dream is to specialize in creating characters I am extremely grateful for explaining the whole process. Now we don't have to struggle finding solutions for a minor problem all over youtube thanks to your work. Much love from Russia!
Bran you have earned my subscription. To be fair, you earned it after the first one in this series... But I just am in Awe. 6 years ago I started in blender with the goal of making characters. I gave up on that passion because I couldn't find good learning material that made it make sense for me. You nailed it. Not only did you nail it for character design for me, but so many other aspects. You made sculpting understandable. So much learned here.
Yeah Bran is an absolute gem. He takes you on a journey in a way that makes you really feel you can do it. And on top of it he throws in an amazing accent for free! We're so blessed.
LET'S GO! I held my breath until this video came out, and now I am sculpting in blender from the afterlife
Res
I hope they have sophisticated render farms there
man you saved me you really made retopology seem less daunting . Still tedious process but you explain every step of the way so thank you! The quick tutorials are good but these are were the real gold is at haha. Broke college student but this help me so much that i got to give something. Please keep making tutorials
Thanks so much! I'll keep makin'm if you keep watchin'm!
Your tutorial for "How know sculpt a good character" is very good for blender 4.0 +. Great !!!
your tutorials are dope man. so much more envolved then i ever imagined to digital modeling. feel like I would struggle to get anywhere without such a great step by step series like this bravo sir xox
Thank you!
Thank you. This is the best retopology tutorial there is. Good health to you.
Thank you for these amazing tutorials!!! i just made it to part two, it took me about two weeks to get through part one because of my adhd, but have finally reached part two and its awesome
yo thank you so much! hope you're doing ok!
Wow!!! To think you are doing all this tut in real time and not time lapsed .. Awesome work
You did a great job of explaining retopology in a simple way that I could understand. I'm more analytical and less creative, so before I found your video I thought the workflow was pretty intimidating. Thanks for the series :)
Thank you so much for taking time out of your life to make this incredible series. I have been struggling with putting the different steps together and it is so helpful to have someone think about that and make such an informative video with an amazing step by steps and really sick visual aids
you're amazing. I've always struggled with finding a tutorial on body retopo that's character is as detailed as I'm aiming for as well as goes detailed into the process, explaining why the actions taken matters. Thank you so much and your progress with 3D is so inspiring. I've always dreamed of making my art come to life in 3D. A good teacher makes a student's dream feel possible, and you've done just that.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm so glad I could help! Good luck on your 3d journey, and feel free to contact if you need any help!
I finally made it to the end!! Wow it was hard, even with your clear demo, it's a challenge to get all this stuff right. Can't wait to get to rigging, but I'm gonna take a break first!
I noticed u apply shrinkwrap modifier a lot to check if the mesh is correct
Instead u can activate the triangle icon with 3 vertex near the modifier name and it will display the vertex point as if u applied it
So no need to apply it till u done
I struggle so hard every time to connect the hand to the writst. What helps me is just making a new hand from scratch with help from a reference then lining everything up to my model. Maybe this will help someone in the future. Great tutorial Bran, I've learned a lot from your videos
Just something worth mentioning:
You can also use control + 1/3/7 for back/left/bottom view respectively
Thanks for the looptools addon, I have had a lot of issues that this just solved. Hope you get a million views. Half of them will probably be me watching and rewatching this.
I did have to use the decimate modify at the end, too many edges. it did work out, the edges are cleaner and I was able to fix the mouth shape.
Watching this series gives me hope! I’m use to box modeling with the aid of a tutorial. I was scared to touch the sculpting aspect of Blender, but after watching I think I’ll give it a go. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Try it and you might be amazed at the result. Can't wait to see the finished product.
thank you so much for these tutorials, ive just been winging my modeling from the ref but sculpting and retopologizing already feels so much more reliable.
You're very welcome!
Mannnn I’m so grateful for this video, it took me a couple days to finish the topology but mannn it’s so worth it. Thanks for this video fr man
Glad it helped!
Love the off the hook opening, and love the videos so far! Only videos that help with retopo and not just sculpting
really wish this series had a little bit of animation sprinkled in, haven't really found any other tutorial that goes as in depth as this one.
Sorry, I'm still pretty new and haven't learned too much about animating in Blender myself 😵💫
Hi, I'm from Russia and I really like watching your tutorials, I hope you will soon tell me how to make clothes! Thanks to you, I finally started to understand how to make characters!
спасибо за видео =)
hi thanks! I'm about to put out a video on hair. After that, I'm scheduled to make one on clothes, so it's coming up!
23:24 If you select two vertices that share a face, you can hit J to create an edge between them an split the face along it.
In case the shortcut changes, the operator is called "connect vertex path". It's essentially the same as using the knife tool to create an edge between two vertices.
After 3 foocking days, i think 7 hours of this tutorial, I FINALLY DID IT, go to next part
Thank you so much for the video.
Learned a lot :D
The teeth part was amazing O.O
Alternatively: If you are not a fan of the shrink-wrap modifier it can be replaced by snapping if you change its settings
To the right of the magnet icon there is a curve and then a dropdown, click that.
Currently if you have been following the tutorial about halfway down it says "Snap to face project", and while that helps when retrotopoligising the face, that's what causes everything to get crushed down to the front when you move things.
So instead, change it to the option below that says "Snap to face nearest", Now you can move multiple elements without them getting crushed
Have a nice day
Thank you so much!
omg. i FINALLY finished this one. a lot of work but thanks as always!
Great video, it really helps to feel a easy flow of doing retopo, and not make it feel complicated or very tedious. If I understand it right the model isn't meant for any animation project, so I was wonder what would be the extra steps needed to make it a animation rig, other then the extra work on the face rigging?
Thanks! For the topo, We'd have to pay more attention to where we have our poles. Probably would want different patterns for the knees and elbows. Would probably make a more dense mesh as well to better show details without having to use a multires. Not really hard stuff, just time consuming.
Thanks again! 😄
@@BranSculpts Thanks for the reply. When you say 'poles' do you mean those used for the IK, or is that still something related to the Retopology? Just making sure I understand what you mean. Thank you again.
@Mix-up a pole is when you have 5 or more edges coming into 1 vert. These usually occur where you have 3 different loops meeting each other or when you redirect your edgeflow. Poles are unavoidable but you want to place them in places where the mesh isn't going to deform because it can end up making some weird shading artifacts.
@@BranSculpts Oh that, now I remember, thanks, sorry, never actually did much soft surface modeling yet, Have done mostly hard surface at the moment. Thanks again.
fantastic video! always love watching an artist's process. i had a lil snafu the other day of also not remembering to save, and after accidentally adding a 3-level subd modifier to my high-poly model i wound up losing like... 6 hours of work to the resultant blender crash :'D so while teaching myself to use blender i took a slight detour to learn how to make my own autosave plugin. loving these videos!
I can't wait to see the next one!
On its way 😄
Lovely lovely insanity inducing vertices, made so nice and neat
Edit: The poor mans starter addon for retopology in blender is Mesh:F2 comes built into blender go to edit preferences addons, for begginners this a good addon before paying or downloading other addons
Sweet new Bran video I look forward to these a lot. Great job so far fantastic production also.
Thanks man! I'm really enjoying making them. Actually learning a bit along the way too
just the tutorial i needed
Buckle up, it's a long one! 😵
I really love your approach to retopo. It never dawned on me to draw on the model itself to plan out the flow, but damn... it does make life easier lol
Muchísimas gracias, estoy aprendiendo mucho. Ya quiero ver la siguiente parte ^^
Excellent tutorials, I have followed the series up to this point. After 6 mins you add a shrinkwrap modifier and use the body as a reference. On my model when I do this the entire retopo head mesh wraps itself flat around the neck area. Any advice on what I am doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
Join the head sculpt to the body sculpt and try the shrinkwrap again.
@@BranSculpts Thanks! I had the same issue
This is an amazing work! very excellent.
Thank you very much!
I use retopoflow for retopology..in blender when it comes to characters... makes life for retopology so much easier...
1 Hour... Perfect time division (No, it's not sarcasm xD)
Thx Mr. Brain
Nice that you showed the whole retopo process
I really wanted it to be around 30 min like the rest of the videos but I couldn't edit it down much further 😵💫
YEAHHH!!! WE BAAACK LEEAARBING
Get lernt!
i love it so much, thank yopu so much sir for your hard works
If you press crtl+[numpad key] it will automatically give you the opposite camera angle.
So, to get the bottom view instead of pressing 7 then 9, you can just press ctrl+7. :)
@BranSculpts Another question. I found that after extrudeing without snapping. I can just go into sculpt mode, activate snapping and then relax smooth. Everything is mostly there where it should be. When i relax smooth verts that i snapped manually it comes to the same location. That's probably based on the shrinkwrap, right?
So i guess useing relax smooth is a time saver for those circle extrusions. Haven't seen a difference after shrinkwrap was applied. Litterally did so with a save file twice and overlayed them :D. Naturally just shrinkwrapping would fix it up too. But i need the smooth step so or so xD.
I find you tuturial easy to follow. A few things i would never have tought of for sure. The coloring of the body made it easy enough. Most times i went ahead and did what i tought you would do. Then watch and correct mistakes or add those knifed verts for the loop stop.
Only missing my kobolds tail (dog version, not the lizard ones), the hair, clothes and rigging now.
Greens oranges and reds on a white model, from the belly down, she looks like she works for Star Command. That being said, great tutorial!
lol Thank you!
This is a great tutorial series, but I have to say it's very frustrating how numeral parts are skipped across the tutorials. For example, in 43:00, after the thumb is done, it completely skips to the palm being finished.
Do you think you might cover the extra steps to make the model more suitable for animations some day? or maybe just some tips on what patterns we should use on the shoulders knees and elbows? I'm trying to make my retopo good so that it'll function well in VRchat
I have some vids planned for later in the year that should match up with what your looking for
@@BranSculpts Great! Your vids are such a big help.
I know this is still hard to do but watching you do it makes it look easy 😭
It's not, but it sure is fun!
I was going through the video again and it seems the problem with the hand at the end is because we had 9 verts instead of 8 around the arm? I´m no expert but I think it should be 8 right? Just trying to figure it out so I understand better. I know you are still learning, I appreciate you sharing your learning journey with us and teaching us along the way!
my mesh is over my vertices and i cant see them. i have the same modifiers in the same orders with all the sames options and settings. What should I do?
BTW LOVE your video it is really helping me and it is greatly made :)
44:15 "it looks kind of confusing - don't worry i'm confused too" 😂
this reminds me of the voice on tiktok "I'm extremely confused" "you're confused? i'm fckn confused, bro" 😂😂
also learned a lot from this video too thank you
Brudda! After 43:00 the shrink wrap modifier was applied or deleted??
Thank you for the awesome tutorial series.
very thank's! Be happy!😁😁😁
Awesome tutorial! i do think this would be good for animation, is there any thing you would add or change if it was for animation?
Around the knees and elbows would have to change. What we have is ok for what we need, but some better support in those areas would help. We'd probably want to moves a few of the poles we made too. A few more nitpicky things.
@@BranSculpts ahh thanks, i was planning on using this for animation, i will look in to some different topology for the bendy areas
Thank you so much💓💓💓
You're welcome 😊
I'm all the way up to joining the hand to the wrist and Im totally stuck. Somehow things don't look right and when I fill in the verts I get a warped, wrinkled look, which means my topology is messed up. Time to start the hand over I guess.
But as a testament to how great this project is so far I'm willing and eager to do it!
i need help. What i need to do after all retopology, cus shrinkwrap just not work and i want do mouth and other stuff like teeth but, if i apply shrinkwrap it's go default and give goofy moments, what we need to do? apply subdivision or what it's close to 48:00 minute
Love the tutorial so far :-) Do you plan on doing similar one with male character?
Nice video i wish i discovered you earlier i made the face already but with this video i can make the body too i watched it a little bit and its quite easy to follow

Thank you! That's great!
what will happen if I left the shrinkwrap without applying? my model became horrible and trash when I apply the shrinkwrap, many details just gone after that so please tell me what should I do and can I export the model while leaving the shrinkwrap with no problems?
Loving the tutorials, the only real issue I've come across is when applying the shrinkwrap modifier at the beginning, I'm not sure why (i'm sure i'm doing smth wrong lol) but the whole head collapses in onto the body sculpt instead of staying in place like yours does.
nevermind, just had a dig through the comments and found a solution hahaha
what is the solution? 😯@@tedhogan1888
Loving this series so far, tho i've run into a problem with the snapping tool, it's forcing the verts to go from one side of the model to the other side. To further clarify what i mean, i'm working on the shoulder from the front and when i move any vert, if the retopology from the back is behind the vert it'll snap to it instead of the front of the sculpt.
Do you or anyone else here have any advice on how to fix this?
When I apply my shrinkwrap mod, my ears conform a flat projection onto my head and I can't find a fix so far. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem too, but I'll comment again if I find a resolution.
(Thank you Bran Sculpts for the very helpful tutorials as well)
If you mean your retopology, you may have forgotten to join the ear sculpt to the head sculpt.
@@BranSculpts That was exactly it! Thank you ☺
Thank you, Man. I have been struggling with retopology for 7 years and you saved me a lot of effort! Can I ask, where have you learned the process?
The retopo vids by @Pixelicacg got me started. I looked up a lot of topology references on pinterest too. But it's mostly watching other people do it. Everyone does things a little bit different, so I tend to take the parts from here and there that works best for me and incorporate it into my own workflow. Glad the video helped out man, and thanks for the super!!
No problem, you totally deserve it :) Thank you for the answer! I do as you said above but your video fills the gap between all the other videos. take care!@@BranSculpts
You are a very good instructor. I'm glad I found your channel 👍 What channels did you learn from?
Not one in particular. Whenever I was trying to do something, I just searched youtube for that particular thing
"...bicause the hand a little aggravating..."
Wow! I haven't finished the ear yet.) Hope it doesn't get much harder.
It's not as bad as it sounds 😋
So, I decided to try my own sculpt using your method and for whatever reason, when I get to this part when I use the shrinkwrap modifier and set it to my body, the entire retopolgized head meshing together with the body mesh. The first time I attempted this following you I had zero issue, but when I am creating my own character from scratch it messes up. What am I missing. Around 6:15 in this video is where I am at if it helps. Whenever I try to extrude it just all jumbles together to the middle of my collar bone.
Hi, I think I had the same problem, try to turn off snapping (the magnet icon).

I think Ive messed up. or a setting is clicked on or off and im not sure what it is. But im lost in this video by the time we go to retypo the body. When i go to drop down the neck, my left side is coming over to my right side, or even if i turn the magnet off, its not snapping to the body like yours is by the time i get to the collar bone area. instead of left v right, the shoulder blade verticies are now coming to the collarbone verts.
I also think I pre-maturely had added/applied a shrink wrap during the head video. I feel so lost.
my mean crease isnt showing when i apply it to the vertices. Any idea why that is? Stuck around 46:35
21:02 checkpoint
I need some help... When I tried to put shrinkwrap to the body the whole retopology head came down to the body. Please guide me 🙏🏻 6:08
Is there a possibility that at the end you'll explain how to animate the character?😅🥰
Sorry I have very very little experience with animating so far. I'm planning on taking a few courses over the summer so it might be over a year before I'd be able to teach anything on it 😵💫
@@BranSculpts Ohhhh! Have fun when you take animation courses, and thank you for answering me🥰
Yeesss thank you!!! Will there be a clothing tutorial?
Yes. We have rigging and hair in front of that though
@@BranSculpts Awesome, i really appreciate your content👍🏾👍🏾
do you have to do the elbow differently if your planning on rigging for anamation?
also if your doing a character with wings how do you retopoloze the wings (i assume for a bat/dragon wing you do it like the arm but what about a fetherd wing?)
I have a similar problem to everyone else where my head gets messed up while adding the shrink wrap modifier. I’ve already tried joining the body, ear, and head sculpts together. I even tried rearranging the modifiers but I still have the same problem. Any ideas how to fix it? It’s around 6:00
Yes siiir!!!!
Muchas gracias bello ser
Very welcome!
Hello, when using shrinkwrap head shrinks over neck weirdly (like whole face goes onto the neck), how can I fix that?
Same same! Even mine 😢 help needed over here too
Nice
Thanks
=thank you it was very useful
Oh my god, is it really not possible to automatically do retopology? I've been sitting for 3 hours already!
Awesooommmeeeee
you mentioned that you would not be rigging for animation, but would it still be possible to rig this for animation? I've been following your tutorials for a college project and need to use my model to create a few seconds of animation. can i still rig for animation after following this tutorial?
Hello from Future Bran thank you very much for your awesome tutorial. I just got 1 problem, when I extrude the neck and any other part after that if I am looking from behind of the the model the new mesh gets snapped to the front of the model and if i am looking from the front it gets snapped to the back, i can fix it manually but it is taking lots and lots of time. Do you know why is this happening ?
I had this exact problem, you have to turn off snapping because it’s all trying to snap to one point
@@AlexiaSmith96 hi thank you very much for the answer 😀👍
hey, thanks for this elaborate tutorial! I have issues making loop cuts with snapping on. It always deforms the mesh. Is it something about the snapping settings?
do I have to turn snapping off?
FR: Génial ! :D
EN: Great ! :D
I've got little problem with a shrinkwrap mod. When im choosing it, it wraps all head faces to the body. How do i fix it man? Oh, and thank you for this great tutorial!
I can't stop the head from shrinkwrapping onto the neck when i apply the modifier. I would join the head sculpt and body sculpt like people are suggesting, but I made my head using an alternate method and therefore dont have a headsculpt, only a properly "topo-ed" head. Is there anything else I can do to fix this or would i have to redo the head using the method you did?
58:54 when you do the same action over and over again like this, save your time by doing it once and then selecting the next verticies and hitting Shift+R to repeat last action
I feel like, relative to the previous videos, you really sped up- cuts in the video hurt for first-timers. Like the tutorial but def having to rewind a lot starting on this video- hoping the rest aren't like this.
I went ahead and did my retopo blind for my first time, I found some tips on how to go from 2 to 1 vert or 5 to 1 etc. My retopology looks soooo soo bad right now lol
That's a long process dude. Takes a lot of patience. Good luck
From 22:40 to 23:47, why aren't you using J to connect the vertices instead of deleting the faces and adding them again? Is it to recalibrate something?
