Alison Makes Extra Coconut Cake (with Confidence) | Home Movies with Alison Roman

- EXTRA COCONUT CAKE. Three layers of fluffy coconut cake, rich and moist, light and airy, unapologetically full of coconut. It’s extra in every way-- extra coconut (there’s coconut oil AND shredded coconut in the batter, toasted coconut flakes to coat the outside), and visually, it’s really SOMETHING (layered, towered, fuzzy, glorious, light, airy-like a cloud, or a sweater). Chef’s kiss. This is not a casual cake, not a one bowl cake, not an “easiest ever” cake. This cake takes a bit of planning and a small amount of effort, but such a cake would stand for nothing less. You WILL need cake pans (two 8” or three 9”), SHOULD have an electric mixer (stand mixer or handheld), and I WILL ask you to cool the cakes completely before frosting. Patience is a virtue.

All the little tips you don't see in written recipes (otherwise a recipe would be its own book) are what make these videos so valuable. The voice of experience cannot be replicated by any means other than hard-won experience.
Hi Alison! I just want to say thank you for inspiring me always. I am now the assistant pastry chef at a restaurant and I am literally living my dream. This cake looks so amazing and our house Carrot Cake has toasted coconut around the edges so watching you decorate such a stunning cake at home was SO satisfying! Love to you always!!!🧡
I don’t know you but I’m really happy that you’re living your dream!
I’ve started my own small baking business and and Alison’s care free attitude is what I need desperately
Making this cake tonight! + side note: I also decided yesterday that I will also be voting for Harris.
Trump all the way…
Validating that she samples the batter as much as I do when baking haha
I would rather eat the batter than the cake.
I love when Alison shares a baking video
These bakes are the beeeessst! simple but all about the flavor
incidentally, the little chuckle + 'mkay' at 18:09 was VERY Kamala coded
How are you doing this without a turntable? Truly reaching home baking goals with the minimal amount of tools used. And the end result is perfect!!!
finding this in my feed A MINUTE after this video came out is nuts, but I love home movies :)
OOh extra coconut cake! Bring it on. 🙂
Thanks for the recipe!! Can’t wait to try it.
We just made your old fashioned strawberry cake this afternoon and your salmon with lemon and capers for dinner.
My whole family loves your recipes!!
Hi Alison, love the growth and fresh things you share with us, but I just have a teenie tiny feedback as a person who's having a hard time focusing on things 99% of the time. One difference with this new format, is the addition of a background elevator style music that's really taking me out. It's really hard also to focus on the instructions, the music signals you to "it's a montage" but it's actually not. Also with the jump cuts and hyperfocused shots..we see bowls and tools, and part of the food. and the change of camera style with the shaky effect, the quick zoom and upper torso with no hands shots. :) In my little opinion as a long time fan and follower since half a decade maybe. It's just hard to follow these new videos. How do you say it in a nice but constructive way. uhm. theyre just very hard to focus on. Again, apologies for the unsolicited feedback. Love you so much Virgo queen!
but if people get mad, and more people like this style..I will delete this, I promise.
I miss David 🥲
You’re not alone, I have the same experience. And I also mean that with deep care, and feel bad about unsolicited feedback.
yes i'm sorry to say these new videos make me nauseous with all the zooming and shaking
I can't wait to attempt this!!! Yay coconut cake! Sorry for the exclamation points!
I'm loving this video. It reminded me of Danish coconut "dream cake", i.e. "drommekage" which I eat from my Danish workplace's cafeteria whenever the 3pm craving strikes. Give it a try sometime. This video also reminded me of Pittsburgh's Pranl's burnt almond torte. The two American ones might be in commeptition for my next birthday cake ;-)
Ina Gartens coconut cupcakes are divine - I bet this is right up there. 🤤
Love the endorsement 🎉❤😂
Can’t wait to bake this! Thank you for another inspiring video & recipe!
I love your attitude and that you don’t give a f* if you lose followers because of your endorsement. You are doing what is right, no matter the fallout (if any). I’m Canadian and the world is watching in horror about what is happening to your country
I would eat this whole cake.
Wow Alison. I enjoy all of your videos, but this cake is truly beautiful and I would love to make this for a holiday! I hope I have a reason to create it. It was just gorgeous.
A lemon merengue cake would be fun: lemon curd filling, some kind of graham cracker-y cake based, and a marshmallow-y frosting that can be torched.
I love this!❤
Looks like the queen of the dessert table.
Looks delicious!
My mum loves coconut, but she‘s allergic to eggs and I would love to make this for her! Can you recommend a replacement for eggs? (I live outside of America so “egg replacer” in the supermarket is not a thing.)
Okay, I want that all in one tool. Where do I get it?
Love this! Coconut gang! #forthepeople #KH
Love how annoyed and flustered the vibe is in this video lol
That’s why the OG Thanksgiving video is my favorite of hers 😂 It’s just chaos at the end
This looks so beautiful 😍
You have totally hit your stride! Congratulations 🎊 I have no interest in dessert or baking (that’s why god made bakers) but because you are so charming and remind me of the fabulous women in Columbia grad school way back in the day. Go Kamala!!! And thanks for being my yr friend.
🥥 You slay! 🥥
You look divine in this video
Diggin’ the Drums and Wires XTC T-shirt on the camera guy
Please link to the spatula/scraper...looks so useful :)
It’s beautiful Alison… and I swear to F’ing god I always burn the freaking coconut too!
Can you sub coconut cream & a drop of vinegar for buttermilk?
Vegan buttermilk is 1 cup coconut milk (not cream) plus 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar. Hth!
Question, did you consider using coconut milk at all?
I love coconut cake and of course mother does too 🙂↕️
Hi Alison! Are those scrapers you use for baking, or are they meant for something else but you use them for baking anyway? I'm asking because they look handy.
It's a masterpiece that cake!
They are so handy! You can use them to pick up cut vegetables or other ingredients that are on your cutting board or counter top, use them to scrape out mixing bowls, and even for cleaning up your work surface when you’re done cooking/baking! I have tons of them in my baking drawer. I even have one by my sink to scrape out baked on messes ☺️
@@lisaanderson135where do you get yours?
@@julietrodriguezart I got mine from a few places, but I got some (the majority of) from Amazon. I also found some in my town at a local chef shop. I do chocolate work and I got my scraper from the hardware store. It’s basically a grouting tool. And make sure that it is safe to use with food
I’m sooooo making this on November 5th! I’m making pink uterus cupcakes with I voted stickers, and now coconut cupcakes. Thank you 💙
Gross
YUM!
Yaaay!!🎉
does your camera crew know that having a mustache and dressing like a cali surfer bro doesn’t mean they can’t have a personality??? your humor (and you overall!!!) is SUCH A SLAY!!! this episode was begging for some david and dan style humor :/
I can’t really handle the use of the bench scraper to frost. Lol
Oh no! Not a political endorsement…I am So Sad. I still love you Alison❤
for those of us who are unable to not tinker with recipes - where we thinking we could incorporate some passionfruit curd/puree per say lol? instead of the cream cheese between layers?
I actually did a coconut and passion fruit cake in culinary school (not this exact cake of course) this was in like 2011. But I recommend going with the curd and making it fairly thick and icing between the layers.
My first run I didnt have the thickest of curds and didn’t ice between so i didn’t get the most defined layers because the curd started soaking into the cake some (still absolutely delicious) but I didn’t have as defined of a layer of curd as I had hoped on that run…
Also after that fix, and icing the whole cake I took fresh passion fruit and put it over and let it run down almost like a pavlova.
But 100% recommend going for it! Best of luck!
@@Gap2th Incredible rec - thank you!
I thought she didn't need a timer to know when something needs to come out of the oven? ;)
why would you want to make a coconut cake without coconut?
🙌🏾

Kamala Harris for President!🥮🍰
You’ve got to be kidding😂
No!
Girl blink twice
Did somebody say coconut cake????
“You know who doesn’t care? Me” - me to every obnoxious trump supporter 😂
KAMALA 2024 + coconut cake🤍🤍
I am not in love coconut but I will follow you forever. ❤🥥
And not in a creepy way 😬🙄

Kamala 2024!!!!!!!!!!
Could’ve just made a coconut cake without adding politics into it 😑
I Agree, just make the coconut cake and keep the politics out!!! Love You Alison, don't Agree with Your Choice for President though!!!
@@nancybrister7588 Yet, you should be able to handle her mentioning her presidential choice!
@@tiffie1801 only deplorables have a problem with this
@@KNB40 never said I couldn’t handle it. It’s just not necessary. Just like how your response to my comment isn’t necessary!
There was a Trump ad during this 😢
Turned off the video the moment you endorsed Harris. I don't need to know who you're voting for, but now that I do, I'm unsubscribing.
Dido!!!! Me too!!!
Not me! If you are behaving like this, then maybe it’s a good idea to unsubscribe! We don’t need negativity in our cooking and baking community!
that is so stupid.....
Good little obedient deplorable. Your cult leader approves
@@ellenbacigalupi3767Your cult leader is going to lose
Alison is great chef, but why you need to curse, just relax
I agree. As I continue to ferment in age, I’m starting to find it more and more annoying with the cursing.
