Are you thinking about buying a new iPad for art but are confused by all of the choices out there? Whether you are new to digital art or are a seasoned vet, purchasing a new iPad can be an overwhelming experience! In today's video, I break down all of the available choices (from the first iPad Pro all the way up to the 2019 iPad Mini & 3rd Gen iPad Air), the differences between each model, and make some recommendations on which iPad YOU should buy for drawing!
***For clarification, I wanted to provide an update to the “chip” section of the video. The Pro models all have the faster “X” chipset version which I failed to include! Thanks to Arkoprobha Paul for pointing this out!
iPad Pro Gen 1: A9x
IPad Pro Gen 2: A10x
iPad Pro Gen 3: A12X
*NOTE- This video was published before the release of the 2019 10.2" iPad which is why it was not included, but my recommendations remain the same!

I’m just looking down on my iPad mini like,
*You disappoint me.*
Hahahaha! Too funny!
Same ;-;
Mary Dewitch Im looking down at my iPad air 2 cuz Im also dissapointed and its being replaced on christmas with the iPad pro 12.9 inch but my dad and mom is gunna use my old iPad and new
Mary Dewitch *SAME!* But I feel like it’s pointless to buy a new one..
Melody Playz1 I’m getting an iPad 7th gen for Christmas I can’t wait!
Him: making choices is hard
Me: not if you're broke af
Yup
😂 yes
Same here 😑
Hell ya 🤣
gundamzerostrike can you use procreate on that model too?
I didn’t even know there were so many iPads. This literally cleared everything up. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
I like how youtube recommends finding an ipad to buy then shows me a note 10 ad
Hahahahaha...gotta love that!
Someone give this guy an award!!! This was so helpful
Thanks!!!!
It really is!!!
Did you get an ipad?
@@uzdoesart I did
i didnt even know that the ram affected the layer numbers 😟 thank you for this super informative review!!! i was going to buy the 6th gen ipad but not anymore!!
Glad to help!
it doesn’t affect the layer numbers. ram and layer numbers have nothing to do with each other. i have the ipad 6th gen and i can use way more than 4 layers.
crabbiie RAM 100% does affect the number of available layers on same size canvases.
Let's Draw with BeeJayDeL On procreates website, they said ipads with 1GB of ram can have up to 28 layers
This is really confusing yet crucial... i don't know who to believe!
First review that’s useful for illustrators
Thanks! That's what I was shooting for...so valuable feedback!
As an other commenter mentioned, this is the best right on point review for someone who just want to illustrate.
Thank you for making sense and not pushing to get the newest to buy.
Thanks for that....just really wanted to be honest and not push people to spend extra $!!!!
I love how you broke this down and made everything so clear! The bonus info about how the 2018 iPad Pro 6gb and 4gb support the same amount of layers was so helpful!!
Glad you found it valuable!
“ALL I WANTED WAS AN APPLE PENCIL! JUST AN APPLE PENCIL!”
NIce!
KimiDesu I’m not crazy!!
KimiDesu same
As an artist Appreciate how thorough you were witheverything that could possibly affect an artist and their art!
This was literally THE most helpful video I have seen researching, you helped save me so much money. I subbed, great way to win the trust of people by being honest and sharing the right information and in the right way! Thanks!
just bought a 12.9 gen 1 so this got me patting myself on the back lol
Where did you buy it? Was it new?
Was it new?
how's the battery life?
Thankyou sooo much for going through this bit by bit and then doing the elimination based on the figures! I've been putting off buying any iPad for 6 months because everyone is recommended different things!
all of these are so expensive :')
Going for a used model can save you some money!
My mom wont let me get something used :'(
@@sopeachy.__ be happy lol, your first car may be factory new then 👀😂
@@sopeachy.__ seems silly. eBay has buyers protection. It’s better for the environment and your wallet. I only buy new now. So much cheaper
I'm a new college student (little money) and wanted to draw on something bigger than my phone screen (not professional) so this video really helped me out! Thanks for the recommendation
Awesome! Glad to help!
Ipad pro 11-12.9 gets eliminated first:
Me planning and already made my mind to buy ipad pro 11 inch: *oh shi-*
😂😂😂 wait for prices to drop on newer models once the 2020 versions drop!
@@BeeJayDeL Ive checked the 2020 one but it seems like nothing is new except that bigger camera and magic keyboard which I would never buy..
Thank you. I have been confused about this from long time. No one clearly mentioned this stuff in any of their videos, except you. Thanks alot
Thanks for the feedback! Really wanted to make this as complete as possible!
I have the 2nd gen iPad Pro. Thanks so much for this detailed comparison. I get tempted by the new one, just because it’s new. But it’s refreshing to know that the 1st gen still works for you.
I will eventually upgrade but if it works....lol! Appreciate you watching!
so many videos on youtube with a similar title, yet this is the only one who describes it well. thanks for the info
wow, THANK YOU. you explained everything so well.. can't believe i was considering financing one of the newer models.
Glad to help!
When you realize this video was over a year ago and Apple already added more generations: -_-
Thank you so much I was interested in getting an iPad but everytime I looked I got confused and anxious this helped amazingly
So great to hear....glad I could help!!!
I was considering the Air 3, not anymore after this review. Thank you
Hahaha...glad I could help! I had to laugh at Best Buy the other day because they are running a promotion where you can get so much $ off of the Air 3 when you trade in a working Pro. After watching this, I am sure you can see why that is such a failure of a promotion, lol!
Me too 🤣
I use an Air 3 for my art, and I have absolutely no problems at all with it :)
@@SaffySweets he hi, i want to but air 3 for make digital art and are u happy with ur ipad? I want to use procreate with it and i want to choose correct ipad for it. Can u give me advice about it? Pls answer asap ❤
So you throw 2 years of software support out of the window
I needed this so much. I've always been a Samsung person. I want to go into using procreate. So I'm having looking at 2nd hand or new I don't know what to look for. This helps thanks
Glad I could help! Thanks!
Omg me too. I am still not sure though I am just worried that the first model would be soon outdated in regards of the procreate program.
I just bought the 12.9" 2nd generation pro today and it's really all thanks to you. I COULD'VE scraped up just enough money to get the new 2018 one in 11" with 64gb of storage (I thought maybe an external hard drive could help with the extra storage issue) but I took a step back and realized I don't need to think of any of that. I could get 256gb of storage on a larger screen by saving up a lot of money instead, on a model that came out only a year earlier! Plus, with the whole bent iPad story getting too common, I couldn't risk it. A strong core>>>
Thanks again 😊
Heck yeah...have fun with the new iPad! Glad to help!
I’m getting the pro 11 inch and I’m sooo excited my dad is getting me a pencil and ipad then my mom said we would buy me the app procreate. Ever since I found out I started binge watching these videos I’m so grateful to have this opportunity and I’m so excited to start drawing
That's great news! Appreciate you watching!
well I was undecisive for months due to not knowing which iPad what ... this definitely summed everything up and I feel so informed - more than after returning several times from the apple store. THANKS MAN!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
@@BeeJayDeL also ordered an iPad before Easter. Thanks again.
I got the 7th Gen regular iPad (10.2) for art and I'm loving it. Contrary to what this video, the 3 gigs of RAM gives me 7 layers instead of 4 (at 4500 x 5400. I'm not exactly sure why 1 gig of ram means you can more than double the amount of layers (seems like perhaps ProCreate is holding back features); but it's very workable for a lot of projects. If you're working in A4 at 300 dpi, you get 26 layers which isn't bad. Anyway, I think you're not giving the 3 gig iPads a fair shot. After watching this video, I initially decided not to buy any iPad for art because I couldn't afford one of the 4 gig ones. Later, I ended up seeing the iPad 10.2 on sale and I took the plunge. I'm very happy and I think it's one of the best options for people on a budget interested in getting into digital art. Of course the Pros will be better for professional artists but getting a cheaper one might be the difference between buying an iPad or just not doing digital art. I've run out of layers once on a 3000 x 4000 project but I had no issue with then merging some of the ones I was no longer editing. Don't get me wrong. I love having more layers and when I'm on Photoshop with my graphics tablet I'll use a lot. But for sketching on the go the budget iPad is great.
Yup...the 7th Gen is ok (Procreate actually did an update to allow more layers on the 3GB models.) Glad you are enjoying it! To be honest though, I hear a lot of people starting out with digital art say, “I’m a beginner...I don’t need too many layers.” A couple weeks later,...they see what’s possible, how they can benefit from more layers, want to get into printing/selling their work, and wish they had went the Pro route with a severe case of buyer’s remorse. (This has happened with a lot of people I know...haven’t had anyone say that they wish they bought a regular model after purchasing a Pro.)
i've been researching this for 2 months, ur video finally made it clear for me. Thank you!
I only use the 6th gen iPad because I originally used it for my digital notes for school. But now I use it for both school and my art. And I agree, go with something better. I’m still learning digital art so it’s fine for me but I’m always so tempted to get a different model.
I appreciate everything you do for the art community, bro. Just subscribed.
Thanks so much, Nate! I appreciate it!
Finally! I've been looking for this info all over the net. Thank you!
Thank you man, just thank you. You said it all we needed.
My pleasure! Glad you got some value out of it!
Great Review! I got into the Ipad game this year by grabbing the Gen.6 9.7 at a nice low price. Great little tool with nice portability. The limit on layers is a PIA though. Will definitely be checking out the 12.9 down the road. Thanks for another great Vid!
Thanks man!
How frustrating is the limited layers bit for the Gen 6? Looking at my options that's the safest iPad I could probably get for art (I'm a casual doodler who wants to get into digital art as I find it relaxing and a great side hobby!)
I bought the 12.9 iPad Pro, it’s amazing, love it so much!!!
Yay! Have fun!!!
Great video, very informative! The only thing I feel that you should've added would be mentioning the difference in refresh rate of the 1st and 2nd gen of the iPad Pros.
I’ve never found it to be a problem...just ordered the new 2020 Pro today though lol!
I've been wanting a new iPad too but I'll stick with my original 12.5 thanks to this video
Very useful cuz i am just to begin my digital art journey who knows nothing bout ipads....now i feel like pro about ipad pros 😉
AWESOME! Glad to help!
awesome video...just like what i think......i want to buy the 1st gen...since it has a bigger screen..the problem is, it difficult to find the seller, because gen 1 it is an old product...many thanks!
Thank you so much for this informative and clear video. Mow I finally know what iPad I should get. Best explanation I ever got🙏❤
A complicated subject for new uses but thanks to your Excellent video informative video that as made things much easier.
Glad it was informative! Appreciate you watching!
It is incredible how after the new Apple event, this video stills relevant. The same A10 Fusion processor for the latest iPad and it's the same for the 2nd gen model! Now I know where my money is going! Not really worth to invest into the latest models while a 2017 iPad Pro with good 4 GBs of Ram can handle fine with them
I believe with the newest version of procreate both the new air and mini models actually support a larger amount of layers than the 2G ram models. Also the smaller screen size of the mini actually works to advantage for someone like me who’s on the move a lot. I really do like the explanation and breakdown you made at the beginning but I do feel that the final recommendation is kind of biased and might actually not be the best option for everyone.
Good video either way 👍🏼
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!
To be honest, you can't go wrong with any iPad with Apple Pencil support. Procreate works wonderful on all of them. Layers is something to consider, but it isn't the be all and end all. You don't need to always have the top resolutions. When I used to send files for print, everything had to be 300dpi. The iPad's are at 260 ppi (Equivalent to dpi, dots and pixels... same thing). So making it slightly larger than screen size is fine, for something to put in a magazine, so you'll have more than 10 layers when working on your drawing. The iPad Pro is my daily driver for work, so just as a yearly treat for myself I sell my old iPad and upgrade to the latest one. I do have an old iPad mini 4 laying around the house and I doodle on that with a Wacom stylus. I wouldn't recommend that for work, but it's still fun. If I was broke AF, I could get something on that done to pay the bills. Personally bang for buck, I would still say the entry level iPad 2018 is the way to go. You'll have a year warranty, and my last iPad the warranty came in handy when my screen failed. This wouldn't have been the case if I bought my iPad second hand.
I`m buying a 6th gen cause its mostly for fun and practice. If I need to upgrade I will in due time, but I don`t wanna spend a lot, when I`m only beginning with procreate. Thank you for this information :)

Found this video while doing some research into replacing my drawing display tablet with an iPad for drawing at my computer using EasyCanvas and to have something portable with Procreate. While I'm still a long ways off from completely moving over to that and am still unsure if I can completely commit to the idea, this video was genuinely helpful to me when considering which ones I should look into purchasing aftermarket.
Despite how I can see the appeal in price and overall functionality for going with the 2015 iPad Pro, my main concern is how long that model will continue to be supported by Apple. The A9 chips are probably not going to be supported much longer if iOS updates are anything to go by, but who knows how much iPad OS actually takes out of those chips. I tend to keep my Apple products around for a while, and am even now just upgrading my phone from a 6 to the new SE! Although worst case scenario at that point is that I just have a drawing tablet with an outdated software update thats no longer supported by Apple I suppose. Fantastic video once again!
EDIT: I'm also curious on where you'd put the 2019 7th gen iPad in this line up? Seems like a decent middle ground between an aftermarket 2015 Pro and a recent model that's guaranteed a good few years of support by Apple with software updates.
Thanks for watching! The 7th Gen is a good entry level but you will be dealing with the limited layers. It will be interesting to see how the Apple handles the support on the Pros...even with an older chip.
I heard that the layer limitation on the Mini and Air has been fixed.
Cool-going to have to get my hands on one and test it out! Thanks!
How many layers can you get?
MegaMilo 95 how many layers can you get now?
Right now, I’m getting 12 layers in 4K 300dpi
@@7707377016 i don't have an iPad yet. I just know because of Brad Colbow's pinned comment in his iPad Mini 5 review.
For me the best right now is the Ipad Air . If you are ok with used or refurbished products The old ipads pro 12 inch are fine too and you can get them very cheap but they will last less years . Sooner or later they will stop the updates but i totally agree with you that they are totally fine and you can get a device with a bigger screen .
Oh my goodness I have been wanting to buy a second hand iPad Pro gen 1 12.9 inch but I wasn’t really sure about it. This video made me more confident in my choice (and it made me more confident in convincing my parents) This video is so well made and easy to understand. I’m not a native English speaker so tech terms are always a bit confusing
Great! Glad you found the video helpful! Good luck on your iPad purchase!
What pad did u choose.
Mumei Chan I choose a gen 1 12.9 inch and I’m very satisfied with my purchase!
Thank you for this info!!!! It’s simple to understand and it’s not an hour long video, so my head it’s fried by the end of it!
Thank you
Hahahaha! Thanks so much-glad you found it helpful!!!
Thank you for this video ! It realllly helped me make a decision (what to absolutely avoid, etc)
I chose to get the refurbished Ipad pro Gen 3 because with the 2020 model it got cheaper. Cheers!
This video is what the world needed.
Thanks!
BeeJayDel....thanks so much for getting back with such a quick reply. Your tutorials are AMAZING. Just have to work up the courage to spend such a huge amount of $$$ on an apple. You sure make it tempting though!!! You're a great teacher!! Peace!!
Thanks Kathleen!
i had my 6th gen 9.7 2018 (128gb) for 7 months, it works great yes & drawing experience is great (the non laminated screen wasnt bother for me) & last week i upgrade to 2018 11” pro (256gb) particually for bigger memory *dont like online storage app...felt different with the new pencil being slightly lighter & more power from the ipad pro...but both device have the same drawing experience so if you’re on budget, get 6th gen & if you have the extra budget , get the pro. Reason why i didnt choose the 10.5 older pro cause of the white spot issues so best to spend more but will last much longer :) hope it helps for some
Are you liking your new Pro?
Let's Draw with BeeJayDeL yeah i do...honestly both device are amazing drawing tools but the new pro definitely give more speed & performance
@@Roxxiane For sure...glad you are enjoying the boost!
Roxxiane Did you use procreate on your 6th gen and can you confirm it could only do 4 layers?
miss sparkle you get around 4 layers if you work on huge size canvas (5000x4000 example) below that, it increase...i upgrade to 11” pro cause i’ll be able to work on more huge canvases
Soooooooo glad I went with 12.9" iPad Pro gen 2 for myself and my two daughters. We are all artists in love with Procreate and the Apple Pencil. As an artist, I would never go with a smaller screen size
Same here...love the extra real estate!
As a teen i hope my parents can buy this for christmas. I’ve been drawing since I was 6 with broken pencils left and right!
ikilledZombie ? My exact situation and why im on this video!
ikilledZombie ? Which one are you gonna get?
Jottrato still not sure till now. It’s between the surface pro 4 and iPad 7th gen
Just get the ipad 6th gen tablet if you have a cintiq or other graphics tablet for professional use.
No point spending on the pro line if it's just for hobby are just starting out.
The issue with buying older tablets is that the screen breaks down after several years.
Dude, thanks. This was really helpful for me and you've really helped me narrow down my options. :)
Awesome! So great to hear!
Excellent video as the comparison table made it much easier to understand. All along I’ve wanted an iPad Pro because of the pencil but hate the 1st gen pencil. All I want is the 2nd gen pencil but the 3rd gen pro is way out of budget!
Thanks for the feedback-I'm sure when the new Pros launch the price of the current ones will drop!
Awesome video! I'd heard about the limitations of layers in procreate, so it was nice to hear why that is/the difference between models.
I purchased my first apple device today off fb marketplace before finding this video ^^; happy as the video went on I made a good choice for my budget! 12.9" Pro first gen!
Nice! Enjoy it and if you haven't already, join the Facebook group and show off your work!
Great review and the info I needed. Thank you!!
Apparently 7168x7168 is the maximum image resolution on 2-3GB model iPads and it can only have a single layer at that resolution however it’s still likely that in the near future Procreate will be better optimised for IPads with 3GB of RAM like my 3rd gen IPad Air so they can take advantage of the additional RAM. I’m also suspecting that they might possibly introduce that into the new V5 update of Procreate that is going to be released quite soon! :)
EDIT: I just noticed that my IPad can have up to 7 layers at 300PPI but the app still only uses around 600mb in RAM when running according to BMSSM so they have most likely since added a more efficient system for managing layers but haven’t yet fully optimised it to take advantage of the extra RAM unless the brush strokes temporarily use a lot of additional RAM before you lift your finger/stylus off the screen to complete them! :)
I bought the Gen 2 10.5" way back when it was released. I used it for UNI to write on and for that alone its amazing. I think if you tend to be mobile, and use the Ipad for hobby level drawing, go with the 10.5".
Although my brother has the 12.9" model and uses it like I do for UNI, it is totaly capable of doing that. But Its just a littlebit less handy when it comes to these f***** small desks in UNI. Here comes the big but!
The gen1 12.9" has a different (worse) screen compared to the gen2, while the 9.7" gen1 has the better Screen (as good as gen2) if I remember Correctly.
The non pro screens have noticably worse screen colour and lighting.
The non pro variants have thicker screen glass, which leads to a noticable gap between the pencile and the actual Screen.
With the Pro variants, it looks like you are realy drawing on paper, although the screen is realy realy smooth and feels nothing like a paper.
👍 Really recommend a matte screen protector too- makes everything feel a little more natural.
Thank you for this video! I read other reviews and watched other videos that were not up to par compared to this video. Super helpful !!!
Amongst the ton of BS "choose your iPad" videos around, now that's a quality one! Thanks for the solid work mate, appreciated. 👍
So glad to be enlightened about ram before buying! I want an unused device but can't find any ipad pro 1's, so am torn between ipad pro 2 & ipad pro 3. I just dont know if I can justify spending so much on a pro 2 that seems already halfway through its support lifespan :( so maybe it's worth the extra £200 for peace of mind and future proofing...
Good luck with the decision!
Thank you for the review! I'm going a transition from my desktop drawing tablet, but can't afford nothing Cintiq tier. So one of the 2 iPads Pro which you recommend will work perfectly for me!
My dad is getting me an iPad Air because it fits the budget so hope there’s no problems!
Very cool! Hope you enjoy!!!
Thank you for this video! Getting into Digital Art and had a hard time deciding. Just ordered a 10.5" iPad Pro Refurb from Apple at a discounted price I couldn't resist. :)
I currently have a 2017 10.5 ipad pro which I love, with an apple pencil. I only got both the pencil & procreate a couple of weeks ago so i'm on a steep learning curve but its fun. I have a history of physical art & digital art but due to ill health i have been out of the game for quite a few years.
So im getting my 'art' back. Exciting time.
I will be getting a 12.9 pro 1TB + 2nd gen pencil next year, (waiting for an inheritance) but going to wait for the 2020 12.9 pro with the ultra wide cameras... yes.. i use my ipad to take photo.. so there 😝 i'm in my 40’s so i no longer care about looking cool 🤣
Been enjoying your Procreate videos, thank you very much.
Right now I have the iPad Air gen 3 because it’s my first iPad and like it’s perfectly fine with me if I need a GB upgrade I can just get one if I need too. This iPad is the perfect thing I’ll ever need for now because I got it on my birthday from my mom’s sister and the pencil (the one with a a connected thing to charge) from my parents an it works GREAT. I’m glad I got this or I would be able to draw my characters and then redrawing them on my laptop with my Huion screen tablet! This iPad will help me advance in the future with enough practice I will be able to make my animation dreams come true. :3
BTW I just checked how much GB I have on this iPad and I have 64 GB YEET
Awesome video! Actually helped a lot
The thing that kills me is that I own an Apple Pencil, and I like it just fine, but then I picked up the new one. The first one is definitely denser and weightier, but the new one feels like I’m holding a regular, light pencil.
And yet the only device you can use it with is the most expensive iPad!
Honestly, I hope they make models in the future that support the new pencil that are a little less pricey than the Pro. Heck, the second Pencil should’ve been what they released from the get go!
Really comes down to the way it charges...
Let's Draw with BeeJayDeL yeah. And it apparently it has a double tap feature which...I mean...I feel like I’d keep hitting that by accident.
When you mentioned the first gen iPad Pro sizes, I thought, “huh. I wonder what size mine is?” It was a gift, so I didn’t really check. It’s the 9.7.
Based off what you described, it explains why I’ve been having some trouble.
Currently going to be buying the new iPad air since it fits my budget and it has a screen that I can see and fit my eye sight
Great video! Thank you! This really helped me decide which iPad Pro to purchase!
Awesome!!!
@beejaydel This is a very informative video! Wanting to get into digital art and looking for which tablet would be the “best,” (not a big Apple fan) i had to let go of my dislike for Apple and really look at it with an open mind. My wife has one and I sometimes play around with it and I’m just like, “man I’ve been sleeping!” So definitely going to try and get that iPad Pro 12.9 1st gen👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾☺️
Awesome! I know a lot of people hate Apple and it closes them off for even trying one, but they are the best tablets for drawing!
The most informative video for artists interested in iPad. Those red lines got me nervous af. But I got the 2017 12.9 👍
Really great your expert comments! Thanks for your help!!!
Best comparison ever!!! Thank you so much!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!!!
Thank you very much for this video! I am having a hard time trying to figure out which iPad to buy for illustrations and this video was perfect! The only reason why I have not been able to make up my mind is because of that Photoshop software that you mentioned at the end of your video. I do not want to get an iPad pro from 2017 and then realize, a few months later, that it is not fully compatible with that full Photoshop software... Oh, men! this is the only reason why I haven't been able to make up my mind... Maybe it is the safest to just wait eternally for that software to finally be available for iPads...
Yeah, really looking forward to PS and I understand the internal debate! :)
For whatever it’s worth. All the Photoshop demos were on the gen 2 pro. So I have a feeling that Ipad will be supported
Won't the old pros start getting slow b/c apple does that
That's always a possibility but I haven't seen it yet- the processor is the only difference...RAM is the same.
I’ve found that apple products tend to slow down if you upgrade the software, but if you don’t upgrade them and keep their original software, they seem fine? Granted, I’m talking about my laptop and phone, but I assume the ipads are the same.
@@YouBeTheHero Really depends-I have not had any problems-I think the key here is the RAM being unchanged over the years in the Pro.
iPad Pro gen 1 still working like a charm. Apple are usually the ones to support their device the longest. Which is how they got a name for themselves in the first place.
Honestly, this view is the best
Thanks so much!
thank you. this was really helpful for my search.
Glad it helped!
Okay but the only people who use more than 10 layers are people who do realism and people who do really detailed backgrounds
So if you have a simple style then it doesnt matter
Check out this girl who uses one of the lower end ipads and still makes fantastic art-
Not the case at all...you can still use lots of layers on simple pieces to speed up your process and make things a lot easier. This is a common misconception that people starting out think until they see why they come in handy.
Who are the 100 morons who disliked this video? This video is awesome! Super informative how he breaks down every detail. Great job!!
😂😂😂 Thanks so much!!!
Heh, watching this on a refurbed 1st gen from eBay. Saved a few hundred £ and it runs fine. I haven’t tried a canvas size that enormous, still 18 layers even sounds a bit limited for how I’ve seen some artists work.
👍
Jeeeez I'm so thankful for your vid. Thinking about to start digital art but I've never used an apple product.... so confusing. Thank you 🌹
Glad to help!!!
I have the first-gen iPad Pro 12.9" as well, and I agree with this wholeheartedly. I'm a power-user with Procreate.
I got mine off of eBay over a year ago for $350 USD used back when they were going for more like $400-450ish used.
That same iPad sells for about $320-$350 now--the same price as a new baseline iPad with the 2gb of RAM, which gives you even less reason to go baseline iPad for the sake of budget.
I'm planning on moving up to the second-gen since it now sells what my current iPad Pro went for a year and a half ago. But if I wasn't specifically wanting the better-than-average display in the second gen, I'd have no problem whatsoever rolling with my first gen for years to come. :)
This was SO helpful! Thank you. I just became a subscriber of your channel today and this is the second video I watched. I'm the new sub from Columbus, Ohio. I just started to draw and also just used Procreate for the first time today, lol! So, I'm going to learn to draw on my June/2017 iPad Pro with the A10 /4GB chip set? 256 gigs of ram. I was going to buy the new iPad Pro...thinking I would need to upgrade to do the things you are doing. Thankfully, you made this video that just saved me about 1,300.00 or more!! Looks like I have a pretty mean iPad that will do what I need it to do as I start my new Adventure into drawing with Procreate! Again, thank you so much!! Peace Always!
Glad I could save you some money, LOL! Can't wait to see some of your work once you get going! Fell free to join the FB group and start sharing!
@@BeeJayDeL BJ, you saved me a ton of cash! Well done on the listing things so well! It made comparing the different models so much easier! You Rock! Peace!
This video definitely help a lot! Thank you so much I’ve already subscribed to learn more new stuff!
Awesome! Thanks so much, Angiee!
Ok so let’s say every Ipad was the same exact price and so was the pencil.... which do I buy?? 😩
my concern with buying the older models is that apple products for me seem to have a built in expiry date... maybe it’s just mine but all my apple products start dying (getting slower, not as responsive, etc) after a certain amount of years.. like, my last ipad just stopped updating.. it still says it’s up to date at IOS 10.3.3..!! I didn’t even know there were all these hundreds of cool new features on procreate !!!
yeah, after a certian amount of time Apple stops updating products. because, they literally have too. the ram cant handle the update, so they retire the device. so, the device registers the last update they revived as up to date. I suggest upgrading, especially since your stuck on IOS 10 :/
@@devilishmorgue6969 thanks- yeah.. I just got the new ipad pro with the pencil!
I got the 3rd gen pro 11" with the new apple pencil for my birthday this year. SUPER EXCITED to get started drawing in procreate :) very informative video! Subbed :)
Congrats! Enjoy it and feel free to join the FB group and share some of your creations!
Omggg congratsss I hope to get one for Christmas. Starting an art course in college in a couple weeks, so nervous 😟
@@ItsLxyla-pewpew Good luck with the college course! I'm sure you will do great!
Great video. Very informative and easy to comprehend. Really helped with my decision 👍
Great to hear! Thanks!
That was a reeeeally in-depth review, thank you so much for it. I'm still inclined to get the mini thinking about how portable it is, but I'm going to feel it in my hands to be sure its not too small.
super helpful, honestly the new ipad pros are nice but that extra $300-$400 they are charging is obsurd! definitely will be getting a gen 2 model
👍
awesome info ,thank you BeeJay
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
@@BeeJayDeL what is your advice for a beginner doing coloring book
@@jamessamy I have an entire video on how to make a coloring book on my channel. Did you check that out yet?
The one big plus on the mini is that it's a great form factor for sketching on site. I like it while I'm on the train to work or otherwise out and about as it's a great option for basic sketching in the wild. Love the Pro 12.9 for when I'm at home and want to get more detailed. I realize that getting both is tough for the majority of people, but if you can swing it, the mini is really good for setting up the basic reference sketch outside a studio setting, then you drop the file over the the big Pro machine for doing the heavy lifting. That's a classic scenario, just like doing a field sketch in a sketchbook and finished painting on a big canvas in the studio.
The mini is also really awesome for taking notes. Absolute perfect size for carting around to meetings, discussions, school, etc. Especially true if you use Notability. I realize the video was more tied to art, but for some who are interested in visual note taking, based on something like Bikablo, the Mini is simply a killer set up of function and form.
Anyways, the gist of all that is, the Mini is a great add-in for art. Sure, not for the primary tool, but if you can swing it, this is a great addition to the arsenal simply because of the form factor.
Good, valid points! I can see the mini coming in handy in those situations! Like you said, I think most people are budget conscious and stick to one, but having both could be a pretty cool tag-team approach to someone's workflow if they could swing it! Thanks for the thoughtful input!
This was so helpful, thank you. I’m going for it
Thank you so much for this breakdown, beyond helpful!!!
