- What is a visual journal? As someone who has kept visual journals for the past 20 years, I explain what I think a visual journal is and how it differs from a regular sketchbook and an art journal. I offer a bit of insight into the power of the mixed media art form that is the visual journal and share a flip through of some of my pages.

Thank you for this. I've written in journals for decades. Now I'm having trouble with carpal tunnel syndrome and having to look for alternate methods of achieving what my handwriting used to do for me. You have opened a window for me.

Loved this! Thank you so much for sharing your journal and your thoughts. I found your personal definitions of a sketchbook vs an art journal vs a visual journal really helpful. I always thought they were kind of interchangeable, but your explanation makes a lot of sense. I’ve always called mine a sketch-journal because I use mostly sketching media (wet and dry; pen, ink, colored pencils, water soluble pencils, watercolor, markers, oil pastels, etc) and don’t really do any collage. I do like to collect the little paper fortunes from fortune cookies and have huge pile of them that I’d like to figure out how to incorporate in my pages, but I completely overthink the issue... Do I use glue, tape? What if I want to sketch over or around them? Etc. 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for the comment! The definitions that I use are just my personal ones and help me distinguish between art journals, visual journals, sketchbooks, and scrapbooks. Everyone uses whatever term they like, and often the terms are used interchangeably.
This resonates with me as I find with traditional journaling I dont go back and read what I wrote. Plus I end up just writing for too long.

Thank you for clarifying visual journal from art journal and sketchbooks. I feel more motivated to get back to keeping a vis-j now after realizing (per this vid) how and why I strayed from the true purpose and nature of the visual journal. By the way, I have the "Journal Fodder" and "Journal Junkies" books; I love them. And I was happy to find you on YT. Thumbs up!

I tried this but when I journal I brain dump. Which means there's allot of writing. So I found that instead my art would occasionally creep into my written journal. Whereas I'd have a separate journal that began as a visual journal but landed up as more of an art journal.
