Art journaling is a safe space to explore new materials, new techniques, new mixed media and simply play, but you can also use your journal to record your observations and explore emotions and experiences. This is the start of my own art journaling journey, so I hope you can come along with me as I create a two page spread around some of my favourite things.
I'll show you my materials and encourage you to use what you have to hand, rather than rush out to get more. I will show how to layer different media on top of each other, using collage, watercolour, acrylic, gesso and pens.
I did an excellent online retreat with @LalyMilleArts and it has converted me to the idea of developing a journal. I won't be doing this every day, but every so often. And when I discover things that work for me (and don't) I will share them here. So if you are starting out too, why not subscribe and come on the journey with me?
My journal is a handmade one - if you want to see how I made it, please take a look here: • How to make a watercol...
If you are interested in the coloursheets, please check out this review: • The most fun watercolo...
Viviva has kindly given me a discount code to share with you, so if you like what you see go to vivivacolors.com/lizchaderton (this is an affiliate link) and use the code LIZ10 to get 10% off. They do local shipping in USA, UK and Canada and express shipping worldwide.
Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?
If you want to have more in depth courses please head over to www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk. I also run a friendly Facebook group: / watercolourstudiowithl... .

There are so many of us out there that are doing junk and art journaling. I am glad I cam across your work. This is something I feel much more able to do. Since I am more of a perfectionist knowing that if I make a mistake or do something I don't like, I can always cover it up and easily come up with something that I really like. Plus it's an easy craft. Thank-you
I really enjoy being creative for the sake of being creative in my journal
Goodness, by far the best, most inspirational and helpful video for getting started with art journaling! I’m not an artist so things don’t seem come naturally. I’ve been working on an art journal for 11 months now. I don’t do it very often because I’m frustrated and yet to have results that I’m at all happy with. You have spurred me on! Many thanks from the other side of the pond!
please go back to it. it is such a lovely way of working
I love this. I too did the Lally Mille retreat. Twice. The first time I wound myself in a knot, threw the thing across ths room... and the second time, I loved it. She's a wonderful teacher. I've been playing with clay for 20+ years, but recently I turned to paper to replace diaries I could no longer write. I started with junk journals and now it's art journals, and gelli printing, mixed media, and I'm madly in love with concertina journals. I have great ideas in my head of things I want to get down on paper... that's where the link is still unconnected. So I really appreciate your way of showing your process, your explanations, your quiet calm voice. Thank you. Mx
I was really sniffy about journaling before I gave it a go. Lally’s retreat really opened my eyes!
@@LizChadertonArt she's got another one on this weekend!
I’ll take a look!@@margaretpinsent6388

Brilliant! I love the idea of writing on the page first. I've not tried that before. I think that might help get rid of my fear!!!
it really helps!
Such a beautiful spread❤
Thank you so much!
You have inspired me to try this.
oh good…you’ll enjoy it!
Liz...truly, you touch my soul with hope, and a sense that I, too, can do this. This "arty stuff", this exploration and self-expression. Thank you for all of your work to share yourself and your artist's gifts. So very grateful. 🙏
You can do it. The act of creation, regardless of outcome, is wonderfully positive
This tutorial is so real, so mesmerizing and so very involved. I could watch all day. I felt like I could do this. Thank you for your very inclusive speech pattern. ❤

Stumbled across your video as I was browsing through youtube for art journal videos, I've been art journalling for 5 years and have even taken some (great) classes with Laly Mille. Welcome to the virtual neighbourhood!
I am so enjoying the journey having been so sceptical!
Happy birthday! And thank you for giving us another wonderful UA-cam art video gift 😎🎂🥳
Thank you so much 😀 It was a few weeks back!
What a beautiful work of art! What a fun thing to do on one's birthday. I love how the copper areas with white dots make me think of the baby deer who eat in my yard. Or should I say, who eat my yard's weeds? Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! And how wonderful to have fawns in your yard ( though not for your flowers)
@@LizChadertonArt I do feel spoiled with all the wildlife who visit our yard.
We often see deer in the field opposite, so we are lucky too!@@AlexEndorian

This is really great Liz. I feel inspired to try it. I have quite a few sketch books although I don't know if they're really the best for this but I will start with one of these and see how I go. I look forward to your next video on this subject! Many thanks ❤
Go for it! I think it’s best to just start because there is no such thing as a perfect journal book!
I love your journal - you are truly talented. I am fascinated and you have peeked my interest :)
Thank you so much! I am looking forward to completing the last few pages
That was so much fun to watch! I hope you will do more of this. I will try this soon!
More to come! I have done a couple of garden pages….
@@LizChadertonArt yeah!
Fantastic job!!! Very entertaining. Thank you for sharing 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it
Very nice!❤
Thank you! 😊
Really enjoyed watching your video mam and thank you for motivating me not to give up art journaling.
My pleasure 😊 I have so enjoyed getting into it this year
The results were stunning.
and it’s such a fun process!
I loved seeing your process and thoughts for this. I've always wanted to try art journaling, but haven't yet. Writing on the page first is a great idea. I have a strong "fear of messing up a blank page' and I think that might help me.
Thanks for sharing!
I really like writing. I gets rid of the fear, but it also helps you empty some of your busy-thoughts so you can focus more.
@@LizChadertonArt I like the thought of burying a 'secret message' into your piece. Either to rid yourself of them, or secretly remind you of something good.
Exactly! Another nice way is to write on the reverse of collage. Only you know it is there …. @@sandyb4693
Happy Birthday!!!
Thank you! it was a few weeks ago 😊

Hi Liz. Happy belated birthday. Hope there are many more.
Loved this video, I think it's time for a "me" day.
Please have a look at the link to Nick Stewart ink art.
He paints with ink and bleach. I think it would be right up your alley.
Maybe you could do a video if you want to try it out and seeing how you like to drink indian ink for brekkie😂 I think this will blow your mind.
Love Larga
I follow him on Instagram! yes, right up my street 😊
This looks like fun! Happy birthday to you!
