So my friend told me this theory before I read the book, and I read it with that in mind. I think it will definitely happen. It says twice what was posted above, and then Emma mentions how Cristina became her best friend (this is at the beginning) and there is lots about Cristina and parabatai. She says more than once how she wants one, but regrets it was going to be Jaime, then says to Emma, "'I have thought for a while now that I would never want a parabatai....But I would feel differently, I think, if that parabatai could have been you [Emma].' I wish you were me parabatai, too, Emma thought." (page 533) So I think Cristina and Emma will become parabatai later. I also really like Emma and Julian as parabatai, but over the course of the book it became clear they didn't. Julian tells her he doesn't want to have been parabatai, and that it was maybe only to tie her to him, and later thinks of the word "parabatai" with disgust. It is also made clear that they love each other enough to give up anything, even the bond they were forced into making. Cortana is also quite important, obviously because Emma loves it, but also maybe because it will be important later.... In conclusion, Cortana will end Julian and Emma's parabatai bond, and Emma and Cristina will become parabatai.
Interesting theory about Cortana, but I don't think that Emma and Cristina would ever be able to become parabatai, even if Emma breaks the bond with Julian. I vaguely remember something from TID saying that once you've had one parabatai, you can never have another, even if the old one died or was disconnected somehow.

But he scares me and I feel like the Mark/Emma thing is going to show an eviler side of him. Like I can see him becoming an anti-hero (is that the right term? I also think the whole forbidden love and all the other shenanigans are going to bring a darker side of Julian and we might see the parabatai curse take effect with Julian.

I know it's a bit far fetched but it seemed a cool theory at the time.

I'm watching this over 2 years after it streamed because I finished the book a week ago and ya I think this was my favorite first book in a Cassandra Clare series and I already love Emma but yes I also do love Tessa and I loved seeing everyone in this book again.
I feel so bad for Kieran :( He has been dealt such a sucky hand in life and he tries pretty hard to be kind and do the right thing, I think. No matter his betrayal I really hope he gets some sort of happy ending. He is so lonely, I just want him to have a friend

Anyway, my theory is that Diana used to be a man, and either she had a sister who died and Diana took her identity and said her brother (who she used to be) died; or Diana was an only child, and pretended to have had a brother who died (who was really her) and now is a woman. I think she visits a warlock so often because it has something to do with the transition? Some kind of spell or potion she has to regularly take? And that explains why she can't be head of the Institute: the Clave would find out about her sex change, and they wouldn't take it well - I mean, they've got a problem with homosexuality, so I'm guessing they would also have a problem with someone being transgender.
With Malcolm holding the grudge against the blackthorns, Magnus is always saying how, when warlocks are really old, they forget how to feel, so maybe this is why Malcolm isn't won over by this new generation of the blackthorn family.

They're Shadowhunters in their prime, so they should be constantly aware of their surroundings and any potential dangers since they are hardwired to fight evil beings spawned from darkness. it makes sense that they wouldn't sleep well with all the noise of being outside and being in some place foreign where they aren't adequately protected.

I'll say i do like Kieran but i ship Mark and Christina more. Besides Kieran being ok with hurting his family, hates half of what Mark is, a shadowhunter. You know how Cassie said there will be a trans characters in TDA and that we'd know who it was in book 2, well i got my guess on Perfect Diego. About Julian, i love him. I feel like people are judging him a lot on the nightshade thing. Like when Kieran told him he wasn't just gentle but ruthless too i didn't get what that was based on. And the nightshade thing even though it wasnt cool throwing him under the bus i get why he did it. i think maybe he might have a dark period though eventually in the series where things are gonna be a lot for him, i think he is really gonna need his brother a lot to get through it. He needs Helen and Mark, he needs help to lighten his burdens that he's been carrying since he was a child. He just seems to love and protect very fiercely and that makes me love him. i also think Jemma will eventually communicate telepathically, thats what i got in the cave scene as well.
I think it was crazy how it took 7 books for jace and clary to go all the way and we were like in the middle of this first book and boom Emma and Julian just did it.
I hate to say it but I'm pretty sure by the end of the series one of the blackthorn kids will die....because it's a Cassie Clare book and she enjoys causing us pain.
i really like mark and kieran together. we hardly know anything about kieran and i feel that there's more to him than one fuck up. its really interesting that his father is the king of the unseelie court. i feel like kieran could be used as a foil to all the negative conceptions about faeries. we always see the faeries from the shadowhunters pov, but hardly from the faeries own pov. we could see more sides to faeries other than deceit. maybe kieran could assist in the undoing of the cold peace. it would be more effective than mark/helen since they're half faerie while he's fully faerie. anyway, i felt the whipping scene was slightly inconsequential since the scars could be easily removed by runes.
I think the wedding Magnus saw Jemma at was Jem and Tessa's wedding because I know there was a comic strip for it and Emma and Jules were there as well as Magnus. I don't know when it was or what made Emma and Jules forgot it, but that's just what I think.

I love both Tessa and Emma....but I love Emma more, because she is so relatable, just with how she talks and acts, it's so relatable to our modern world life and, how teenagers just talk and act in general....love the humor, it is the most relatable thing about her. She tends to make more realistic and right decisions than I feel the other female protagonists did.

I'll say i do like Kieran but i ship Mark and Christina more. Besides Kieran being ok with hurting his family, hates half of what Mark is, a shadowhunter. You know how Cassie said there will be a trans characters in TDA and that we'd know who it was in book 2, well i got my guess on Perfect Diego. About Julian, i love him. I feel like people are judging him a lot on the nightshade thing. Like when Kieran told him he wasn't just gentle but ruthless too i didn't get what that was based on. And the nightshade thing even though it wasnt cool throwing him under the bus i get why he did it. i think maybe he might have a dark period though eventually in the series where things are gonna be a lot for him, i think he is really gonna need his brother a lot to get through it. He needs Helen and Mark, he needs help to lighten his burdens that he's been carrying since he was a child. He just seems to love and protect very fiercely and that makes me love him. i also think Jemma will eventually communicate telepathically, thats what i got in the cave scene as well.
My money is on Diana as the trans character.
I think it was crazy how it took 7 books for jace and clary to go all the way and we were like in the middle of this first book and boom Emma and Julian just did it.
I hate to say it but I'm pretty sure by the end of the series one of the blackthorn kids will die....because it's a Cassie Clare book and she enjoys causing us pain.

i really like mark and kieran together. we hardly know anything about kieran and i feel that there's more to him than one fuck up. its really interesting that his father is the king of the unseelie court. i feel like kieran could be used as a foil to all the negative conceptions about faeries. we always see the faeries from the shadowhunters pov, but hardly from the faeries own pov. we could see more sides to faeries other than deceit. maybe kieran could assist in the undoing of the cold peace. it would be more effective than mark/helen since they're half faerie while he's fully faerie. anyway, i felt the whipping scene was slightly inconsequential since the scars could be easily removed by runes.
there's a gentler side to kieran, and he did what he did out of love, fear, and selfishness. hopefully he gets a good redemption arc LOL

I love both Tessa and Emma....but I love Emma more, because she is so relatable, just with how she talks and acts, it's so relatable to our modern world life and, how teenagers just talk and act in general....love the humor, it is the most relatable thing about her. She tends to make more realistic and right decisions than I feel the other female protagonists did.

I think it will have something to do with cortona. after emma is whipped in the dream her mother tells her that cortona can cut anything, can it cut the bond? then when emma fought with malcolm cortona went into the black book so now cortona has a bunch of black magic.
