    Say hello to the all-new Porsche Macan!
    Porsche’s mini SUV has had a major revamp for 2024, and there’s one key difference - it’s gone fully ELECTRIC! That’s right, the ICE-powered Macan is officially gone forever. But does this all-electric SUV have what it takes to win over the Porsche faithful?
    Well, let’s take a closer look. Starting with the exterior design, the new Macan doesn’t stray too far from the old Macan. Starting at the front the grille has been swapped for a larger, lower air intake, and the new headlights are almost exactly the same as what you’ll find on the Taycan. The side-on silhouette is almost identical to the previous Macan, and while there have been a few design changes to the rear end, we don’t think it’s that much of an improvement compared to the old model!
    Step inside and the new Macan is pretty similar to the Taycan. But of course, that’s no bad thing! The driver gets a curved display, there’s a large infotainment screen in the middle, and even the front passenger gets their own screen built into the dash! As you’d expect the cabin is packed full of high-quality, soft-touch materials, and the seats look super comfortable.
    One thing this all-electric Macan isn’t short on is performance! The entry-level dual-motor can produce 408hp, while the top-of-the-range Turbo can put down 640hp and an eye-watering 1,130Nm of torque - that’s 80Nm more than the Taycan Turbo S! Porsche also claims it should be able to hit 60mph in just 3.3 seconds.
    The new Macan will start at around £70,000, rising to around £95,000 for the Turbo edition. But is it worth it?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

It seems like Porsche did split headlights just for the sake of having split headlights. I find this wierd, like the car has four eyes. • @Saddex
      @Saddex 6 місяців тому

      @@arcadialive4265 do they have a heat pump? If not, yes, a 50% range loss is probably going to happen in well below freezing temps. With heat pump, 30-40% is more realistic below freezing. Highway range is of course going to be even less vs WLTP but that applies to ICE vehicles too.
      For a lot of people it will probably be adequate, though ideally the summer range should probably be in excess of 450 miles to be considered practical across the board in Europe. The distances are relatively short and winters mild. In the EU, one of the planned provisions of the Euro 7 standard, mandatory winter range tests, was unfortunately scrapped. That was stupid because it would provide a lot of certainty instead of having to assume about a third less at freezing which is average loss demonstrated in tests. More without a heat pump and at colder temps.

    • @arcadialive4265
      @arcadialive4265 6 місяців тому

      @@Saddex they are great daily driver cars. Just get questionable for road trips. And yes, I googled the model just to make sure. They do have heat pumps. • @Saddex
      @Saddex 6 місяців тому

      @@arcadialive4265 mine loses about 1% every 2 days at -10 C or below. Though yeah, probably I assume it's a combination of things, including temps in that range.
      Although since the trend is for batteries to get larger capacities with higher energy density, the range loss in winter should get proportionally smaller to some extent, as the energy used to heat the cabin per unit of time won't change and it takes much less energy to keep the cabin warm vs heating it up from cold even when driving a longer distance. Unless though you precondition the cabin while plugged in but then the overall loss should be even smaller proportionally. I generally don't believe in telling people what to do, though another option available to lower consumption is to use heated seats and steering vs the fans that could be considered.
      Though yeah, for winter roadtripping EVs leave a bit to be desired even if I believe 700 miles WLTP probably is a bit overkill. 500 is probably going to be the sweet spot for the majority of people.

    The Macan likely has a smaller frontal area than the model Y, which will mean its drag difference is less than the CD figures alone indicate.The overall drag is measured by multiplying the CD (drag coefficient) by the frontal area A, giving CDA. This is what dictates overall aerodynamic drag , the CDA, not the CD.
    The old Macan had a frontal area of 2.61 sq. m, the new one is quoted as being "less than the old one" (I could not find a figure), and the Model Y is quoted at 2.65 for frontal area. So the difference betwen the two, is less the the CD numbers alone suggest. (0.25 and 0.23). Think of a brick, it has very poor aerodynamics (poor CD) but a small area (A), so it will take less energy to push through the air than an EV, you need to factor in the area part of the equation as well as drag coefficient to give the overall picture.
    The Tesla model 3 has exactly the same CD as the Model Y, but 20% less frontal area, so the CDA is 20% less. The 3 should be more efficient at a constant high speed cruise, if the motor etc. has similar efficiency.

    • @hamptonchivasa
      @hamptonchivasa 6 місяців тому

      Just to be clear… it’s the cd that ‘reduces’ the effective frontal area and hence a lower cd benefits a car with a higher frontal area. Eg a lotus elite has a smaller area than that of a model x but the model x has a lower CoD hence lower effective frontal area and therefore more efficient.

    • @timk3939
      @timk3939 6 місяців тому

      @@hamptonchivasa You need to multiply CD x A in each car to find out which will have lower drag. CDA is the number that matters. A lower CD won't always mean a car has less drag if frontal area is larger enough to outweigh the lower CD. In this case the frontal area of the Macan is less than the Tesla, but the exact amount less is not in print yet, so overall drag may be less on the Macan, or it may not, depending how much frontal area they've lost. CDA is the only number that matters. I feel that CD is misused quite a lot, it's not the full picture at all.
      The time CD it can be fairly useful by itself is if the same car has aero tweaks to change the CD but frontal area is not affected much, such as comparing the effect of a big rear wing or lip spoiler on MPG, but it is still worth looking at CDA to get the true picture.

    My wife has been wanting the GTS. We really like this one too, but the quotes to make our 6 year old house compatible with a charger (when looking at the Grand Cherokee 4xe) were astronomical. I think that may the be the biggest barrier of entry for us on electric vehicles.

    The front is nice. The rear looks like a failed butt job. The slope doesn't work that good on a short suv. They should've extended a by a few more inches to make it look better. 80k usd for a base model small suv is a lot. Most people will go with the cayenne. A new cayenne base is 72k.

    Let's hope the rear leg room is better than in the ICE version. The Taycan Cross Turismo offers more room for rear passengers, and could be considered more practical as a daily driver for the family. Also, I know Matt hates the passenger screens, but we find it really useful on the Taycan. Easier for passenger to control music, put in sat nav directions etc and the main screen continues to function. Not sure this Macan will take me away from my beloved Taycan (or the Taycan II just announced and available to build on the Porsche website).

    TBH, if you want an electric Porsche, this makes a whole lot more sense than the Taycan. The Macan 4 has bigger battery and a WAY more range than a base Taycan, while costing 10+k less. You can upgrade the Taycan with a bigger battery, but it'll still have less kwh, and still have much less range. Lots of reports about Taycan's losing so much value on the 2nd hand market, well this will only make it worst.

    Less expensive than I thought, still €40K euros more expensive when optioned out slightly similarly than a top trim fully specced Xpeng G9 Performance here in the Netherlands. And the G9 still charges faster, accelerates faster, and it only has like 3 options, instead of 250.

    Not forgetting the Porche options trick. So now I believe I have the plan. Let a few people buy these with some great optional extras. Say 90k. Wait 6 years and go to British car auctions and buy one for 27k and then flip it for 30k. Most of the lease companies dump their Suvs their after 6 years when they are getting close to worthless. Or better still buy a Byd Suv after 6 years for 14k. Ok. All clear now.
