The New Porsche 911 is a HYBRID? Driving the 992.2 GTS | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat

- The new Porsche 911 (992.2) GTS has gone hybrid. But while that word may strike instant dismay into the hearts of many enthusiasts, this is a slightly different sort of electrically-boosted drivetrain; This is a T-Hybrid. That means the system adds less than 110lb (50kg) to the kerb weight of a GTS while providing significantly greater response, thanks to an eTurbo and an eMotor. As Henry Catchpole found out on both road and the Ascari circuit, this also means a 0-60mph time of just 2.9sec and a rather good soundtrack.
Of course any extra weight can be seen as a cause for frowning and the added complication certainly won’t please home mechanics. What’s more, the switch to hybrid is rather confusing when you look at the CO2 emissions and fuel economy figures, because they are very similar to those of the non-hybrid, previous generation GTS. That’s largely down to the fact that this is a hybrid that cannot run on electric power alone.
What gives? Why isn’t this a 911 that can ape a Porsche Taycan? Well, this engine is all about making sure that Lambda = 1 at all times, without any drop in performance. If you’re not entirely sure of your Greek alphabet, then you’re certainly not alone but you’ll find an explanation in the film.
In this review of the new 992 GTS you’ll also find some rather clever graphics courtesy of Apple Vision Pro technology, which lets us show you the full layout of the hybrid powertrain. The completely new 3.6-litre flat-six can produce 478bhp and 420lb ft of torque on its own but in total the new T-Hybrid system has outputs of 534bhp and 450lb ft of torque, which is some 31bhp and 103lb ft more than a current 911 GT3.
The price for the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid is £132,600 or $164,900 but if that’s a touch too steep then Porsche has also released a new version of the standard Carrera which starts at £99,800 or $120,100. Henry Catchpole drove the (still non-hybrid) Carrera on the launch in the south of Spain as well, which proved quite the contrast.

I wish manufactures would priorityize physical gauges. Just look at the new Bugatti Turbion's gauge package.
@@Sir.VicsMasher you did not just call it the “turbion”
@@buzzworddujourthere are 4 tourbill(i)on ways to misspell it
Toorbeeyohn
Yea especially a 911 and ESPECIALLY for $140,000 entry price, it's really a mistake and detracts from the Porsche-ness of the car in my opinion. They only need 1 or 2 really nice physical gauges they can have the rest be digital if they want. I'd love to have a Porsche one day when I can afford a GTS or higher, but gauge cluster elegance is one of several things contributing to timelessness and I don't have good feelings about this one. Otherwise though, the new GTS seems fantastic. Sadly, it won't be for me because by the time it gets down to a range I could feel comfortable with it'll be out of warranty and almost by default these things will be IMPOSSIBLE to repair without breaking the bank.
the bugatti is very expensive so they have they money to put in buttons and high quality materials, but the 911 stating price is also high tho, this interior is a downgrade imo.
Catchpole reviews are the best, thanks!
Probably yes
I wasn’t expecting a brief from the holodeck 😅 very cool
This channel with Henry every time they make a video it's a masterpiece, so well filmed, like a movie such nice sound quality everything is amazing
This 911 t-hybrid is impressive, the single biggest thing I wanted from one less turbo is for the engine to sound better, to sing a little bit more, and it kind of does, but the improvements to the car are great! If only it had a Manual Transmission, that really is the cherry in top, but while we get that cherry, what a great car this is.
@@Bmontepeque11 yeah ngl i actually really like the sound of this thing
with what koenisegg is doing with their cc850 and chimera, a manual/auto transmission is possible. the clutch pedal would be fake but id take one hands down.
Sounds worse to me since there is absolutely zero flat 6 howl in it. To my ears it's a harsher tone that sounds electronically generated or augmented and does not change significantly with RPM, much more monotone. The 992.1 turbocharged engines were never the best sounding things ever but they seemed to have more character than this.
I guess they did it well then with their fake engine noise? I rather have no fake engine noise though.
@@JCviggen1 they do actually augment the engine noise.
The graphics at 7:45 explaining the power train, outstanding. This is what sets Hagerty apart from other motor journals. 👍
Yeah, it was an effective presentation.
Pretty sure the VR model was provided by Porsche, other publications used the same graphics
It's provided by Porsche. They set it up so that his video feed can incorporate it.
Thank you for not following the rest of the internet in declaring faux outrage over hybrid 911s, and instead, bringing an informed and objective explanation of the hybrid system, and Porsche's reason for implementing it.
The problem these days is that there are plenty of armchair experts who have never been in the showroom let alone driven an hybrid car. It offers something extra as Henry demonstrates…yet we all read the same anti EV stuff from the closed minds of those who read and believe but do not know that technology moves forwards and always has…for the last 140 years..hybrid is just the latest idea and you can be sure that all the engine designers of those 140 years, would have explored and developed anything…including electric power…in fact they did of course..well over 100 years ago but the YT warriors may not know that. Well done Porsche…real world excellence in design and its implementation. 🙂🙂
@@HQBProductions the problem is the car reviewers are in the pocket of porsche. slate the car and loose access to all porsche future releases and vip events. in terms of bringing informed and objective explanation of the system. That information has come direct from porsche. this viewed as more informercial for me. its ok for people to get upset. I think we just prefer the old simple ICE system.
1750Kg, fake gauges and no manual. Sure, "faux" outrage.
@@HQBProductions You need to learn that less is more. As in, less weight is more fun. Less gimmicks are more fun. Less EV-lobbying is more fun. Evolution is not supposed to make things heavier or more sterile. It is supposed to make them better. The 911 is not evolving, it is deforming, it is losing whatever pedigree it had.
@@codymiller1994 So, new cars are automatically better, in spite of being much heavier and more sterile than the older ones. Go ahead then, buy an EV if you haven't already. But don't blame me when you see the consequences of the next "energy crisis" construct. Although I will keep "resisting change" and therefore roaming free 😎
I didn't know the manual had been ruled out for the GTS...that's sad, but the car is VERY impressive and the hybrid system seems to be cleverly designed!
Great review, as always!
Fun fact: the license plate - S-GO - stands for Stuttgart Geschäftsbereich Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Meaning Stuttgart - Business unit Public Relations.
Gotta appreciate the details ... Thanx
Did you care to configure one of the GTS Targas? If you load it up it costs now 250.000 Euros. That's well past Turbo money. How does nobody talk about the insane price hike Porsche has made?
Because they can sell all the 911s they care to make. It's not Porsche's problem if a lot of people can't afford a 911. That#s what the 718 is for
Best explanation of the .2 on the net. Thx Henry.
Brilliant use of tech to illustrate the new hybrid system and top class presenting as always by Henry! Keep up the great work guys 👏
Beautifully shot video! And stunning machine. Hybrid isn’t always bad. 🤙🏻
Hybrid always means a weight penalty, so indeed it is always bad. I don't care about straight-line acceleration or some lap time at the Nurburgring. I want response for the sake of precision, especially in a car with that sort of power my life itself would depend on that. So I 'd go naturally aspirated and purely ICE, dropping the weight as low as possible and thus dropping the emission levels without needing to actively ensure that I always run on lambda=1. Additionally, I 'd go for a manual 6-speed or at most a non-automatic 7-speed sequential (operated by a forwards-backwards shifter akin to some rally cars I 've seen), because nobody really needs more than 7 gears if the last ratio isn't stupidly long.
@Lina_Antoniou hybrids respond to the throttle quicker than even the fastest responding combustion engine. Instant torque.
@@aspecreviews If you 're on a straight line and flooring it, you 're right. This however is not the sort of driving I am talking about. As soon as you need to take a corner at the limit, ICE alone is the best option. Additionally, I don't buy that "instant torque" catchphrase. The typical torque curve of electric motors is the opposite of an ideal torque curve. You don't need that much torque at low speeds, you need more at high speeds. The only reason a lot of manufacturers try to increase low-end torque is that most people have no idea how to drive.
Engine sits 110mm lower?! Wow, that is huge! But I also thing eventually that flat 6 will bite them as it does not allow almost any difusor, and competitors will just grow bigger tunnels (like Ferrari).
Apparently Porsche is just about the numbers. Ferrari can actually make a car that handles.
for me the Porsche hybrid technique is a way of complicating the reliability problem and moreover this system does not bring any savings in use and taxes. The pleasure is elsewhere.
It's a Porsche. The rich don't care about reliability or saving money.
What a great overview of the technology in this new hybrid Very educational
this new engine sound isnt too shabby. i was expecting something dull sounding like the amg c63
I get Porsche needed to move to a digital instrument cluster for, well reasons. But they should have done what ford did with the Mustang where you can trigger a classic Fox body cluster. Imagine a new 911 with green backlit gauges mimicikng the original 911? That would be a hit.
look up the configurator, you can choose the colour of the sport chrono watch and the central gauge
When you trigger the Fox Body cluster do you suddenly grow a mullet and find a cousin attractive? Asking for a friend.
So why did they "need" to move to a digital cluster? Economies in a 200k car?? Even the 992.1 dash was a downgrade from the classic 5 gauges design we last saw in the 991.
@@christiantheves3815 yeah a bean counter probably saw it and you can't beat bean counters so it is what it is
@@theairaccumulator7144 Bean counters are indeed beatable. Bosses just don't care to beat them.
I've watched a couple reviews of this and you've done the best explanation so far of the hybrid system. Thanks Mr Catchpole!
It sounds good, but also...different...doesn't sound like a Flat-6, almost like a FPC-V8. Is there some sort of induction, or fake noise being piped into the cabin?
Also the E-turbo looks like a really cool idea...I just wonder if they are going to bake to death sitting next to the exhaust turbine.
Lack of manual is def a deal breaker for me. No one is paying me to achieve the best lap time, so I'd rather have the most enjoyment in my drive.
since the introduction of, I think, the 991 series, there has been engine noise being piped into the cabin. not fake noise, mind you, but piping explicitly
made for cabin "engine acoustics". so, in a sense, fake all the same.
@@donkeyshot8472 Yeah I figured...I am fine with enhanced induction noise...this just doesn't sound like the Porsche Flat-6 I own...but it does sound really good anyway.
@@Dolby109 yep, the more I see porsche going the volkswagen corporate route (991 onwards), the more I enjoy my own old flat-six, too.
Porsche has done the hybrid 911 right, you can see their focus on great driving and engineering is just amazing. Just too bad that they lost some analog feel on the inside with the dash and of course losing the manual. Dakar version enyone ;)
Henry another awesome video, keep up with making reviews like this :)
As always, thanks for your perfect and thorough explanations. Well, I’m relieved to learn that the 911 in its 992.2 hybrid version is still what we feared it might not be any longer. Seems to have whopping performance and even the soundtrack is pretty convincing. Good. 😎
The life cycle of this new
911 is as long as you have a warranty, good lock with the new technology you are
On your oun
You can extend the warranty in the UK market for I think 15 years at a reasonable cost.
Amazing and detailed video... as usual! 👌
The sound from that new engine😍👌🏻
Superb film, enjoyable, informative. Well done Henry (what I appear to have said out loud - rather embarrassingly- after watching this 😂)
The reason for the hybrid’s existence is not performance. It’s reduced EU emission fines.
All data from the cars are now sent to the manufacturers when they are in for a service, and the manufacturer then sends the data to the EU for real world emissions and energy consumption.
It’s very neat to see Porsches development creating a sports car. I feel like the Porsche 911 has been the ultimate enthusiast daily from the original 901. Although it has shifted from what many enthusiast want (no stick and the weight) it still is the ultimate daily for enthusiasts. The only issue i have with Porsche is the crazy pricing and “Ferrarication” of the Porsche brand. Which takes it from a car brand to just a brand.
They announced today the death of the ICE cayman and boxster…
Very well put.
Its not a sports car. It weighs more than most small family cars and hatch backs.
"Ultimate daily for enthusiasts"? Hardly. Way way too much money, too much tech, and too much weight. I'd much rather have a Toyota 86. WAY more fun to drive. Fast isn't always better when it's behind the wheel of a microwave oven.
*@milescarter5854*
Very well put, my friend. I concur on all points.
Thank you for the lamda 1 explanation
The engine sound - love it! Better even than normal Porsche engines.
Between Henry Catchpole and Chris Harris, the UK has spawned two of the finest motoring journalists in the world. In fact, no, it has spawned THE finest two.
Agreed.
You're nailing it, keep the great work!
Awesome video / review including the graphics! My 2015 C4S may be at risk of being replaced😏- the hybrid GTS seems quite amazing!
Always love your vids since they are in the proper aspect ratio
Superb from Henry and incredible production!
Fantastic and informative video, i doff my cap to you sir!
I'm continually impressed with the quality of these videos. Best I've seen anywhere 👍👍
It's been ten years since Formula 1 introduced hybrid engines with a MGU-H that are now being ditched again because it's complicated, expensive, and not road relevant. Or is it now?
Thank you for a wonderful explanation, which was really easy to understand. And thank you for a really exciting report.
5:46 OTSOT @smith&sniff 🙂
Well spotted!
Came for the same thing. Henry definitely qualifies as a SSG
Another perfect update. Beautiful in every respect. Love the tech updates, the fascia blades etc. and - yes - hybrid is the best idea.
As a Porsche driver of 35 years, I applaud this from them. I’m struggling to understand the naysayers. It is Porsche, Ferrari, Bugatti that I want to see advancing the technology of driving. Masters of the track, who better to show the way for the rest of the industry. Taking the powertrain path of F1 is absolutely brilliant. As batteries catch up, weight will drop some. As an engineer, I don’t see electrification as the same voodoo mystery most gear-heads do. Most important, I trust Porsche and Ferrari to make the right choices for the current moment.
The first 911 hybrid was in 2010 and the hybrid system was designed by the Williams F1 team, not Porsche. Also in regards to hybrids the most advanced racing cars were not F1 cars they were WEC LMP1 cars. Also one of the best driving & engineered cars on the road right now is Lucid
You're so full of it. Please be quiet.
@@vir123456 Me?
Ferrari has lost their customers by limiting their productions. I hope Porsche doesn’t follow this route because if I have to wait 2 years for allocation I won’t
A sports car has to be light..that’s the be all & end all…
Super Video as always!!! Thanks ❤
Sounds amazing!! One less turbo frees up some noise maybe 🤔 Love it!
Another great review Henry!
Always love a Catchpole review.
Welldone Henry and crew to present the technology of the new hybrid 982.2 by going deep in with the science and reasoning - the fact we end up with effectively a turbo / E- supercharger combo with some regen seems to me a positive/ eliminate the lag and gain response and efficiency. What’s not to like ( well that starter button looks as tactile as a road crossing button) - I hope that small battery has a good warranty as the whole system hangs off it 🤔
The review worth waiting for; Sir Henry Catchpole. ... Tell it like it is .......... The Kool-Aid is tasty,,, although I'll keep the '98 993 coupe.
Excellent as always
Congrats for this video! Please, i need to know: Where is this place?
Great Video as always. Love your work Henry.
Back in UNI, we modified a 8kW hub motor (from a cheap electric dirt bike) to be mounnted on the front hub of a 125cc 2t KTM dirtbike (we choose KTM because it was among the few dirtbikes that had a reliable 12V alternator+battery).
It was an hybrid sport toy.
It was heavier enough to be judged "bad" by professionals, but, oh boy, on straights and hills you could definitely feel those additional kW.
When I think of hybrids, I don't think of a modern Prius. I think of the 2008ish model, able to pass easily most ice cars simply because it had one more motor.
I have a 2002 model Prius, it's surprisingly zippy up to about 30 mph because the electric motor has some 260 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque at 0 rpm.
Another excellent film from Henry. It continues to amaze me what porsche does to the 911. I too am dash the analogue dash is gone, so perhaps a 997 is the pinnacle of the 911 generation.
Great video.
Porsche doing a fantastic job with the tech and engineering, as you might expect. It's not for me, though. I'll keep it simple with the 996/997 era!
The graphic description of the new hybrid platform is an amazing way to show a visual
That is from Porsche
I hate the air intakes, I hate the bumpers. Added complexity to a pure nicely-balanced design.
It's ghastly
Absolutely. And the cameras/ radar make it look even worse!
It sucks big time!
There are plenty of old ones going around. It's not like we're ever going to run out of them.
Great review as always from Henry.
Does it have to be plugged in to charge the battery at any point?
no
Hi. Does anyone know what shade of grey the GTS coupe is that Henry is driving in this video? Thank you
Really liked tht visual “presentation” of the internals!
Sounds like a silly question but how can you increase displacement with the same pore and stroke... ? 8:35
They just kept the same ratio between them.
I would like to know what watch you are wearring. I love it! Blue Dial, black bezel, yellowish orange hands and on a nato, awesome! Please tell me what this timepiece is called and who made it.
Found out by myself, it's a Scurfa Diver One.
Thanks for ultrawide support, awesome video, awesome car. Gj
I appreciate the incredible and descriptive explanation of the new hybrid system, Henry. The engine note seems deeper now. Did you notice the sound being different, or at least pleasant?
It sounds really good - there were hints of 991 GT2 RS in there. Interestingly with the roof off in the Targa you can really hear that the silencer is on the left.
Excellent journalism as always team
Thanks for the explanation on the hybrid system
I've been waiting for someone to do a video with the Targa. Now I've got so many more choices. I can pick up a gently used Targa GTS for just shy of 200 grand, or pray for an allocation and maybe get a new Targa GTS for the same price (with a significant dealer markup).
I didn’t understand the point about lambda - he says the larger displacement helps prevent overheating but how does the new turbo effect overheating?
Good point. I heard on another video that this engine works with somewhat less boost, but if I recall the number correctly this "less boost" is 1,2bar which is still enormous. So maybe a little bit less heat than the previous model, but still a lot of heat.
Yes it looks pretty much the same the Porsche 911. Great video. Thanks for sharing! 💯👊👍
As always Hargerty and Henry, thank you for being the spiritual successor to the Carfection channel. Fantastic film. And if there was a Hagerty driver's club in India I'd subscribe to it. :D
Regulations for emissions and safety always seem to add to a vehicle. I wonder if they'll ever pass a vehicle density regulation - something like the maximum weight of a vehicle for a certain size which could potentially stop vehicles from getting heavier and heavier. Lighter cars would require less energy, use less consumables, and be safer all while improving the vehicles driving dynamics. Then car enthusiasts could benefit from regulations (we do for safety, but I think that they go too far). I'd love to see emissions and/or safety targeted by taking 1,000lbs out of a car.
I think they 're making cars heavier on purpose. They 're actively trying to remove the fun from driving, just because they want to convince us to trust autonomous EVs. I for one am not falling for it.
Very interesting as usual.
I´m glad, he didn´t fell asleep
Its for the crowd that used to drive SL ( before that became a 2 seat limo)
Should have made the cayman all electric with a 200 mile range.
Hybrid just makes everything more complicated and expensive.
Sounds really good! 🤩
From the graphic it looks like the turbo is only fed from one back of the exhaust is that just a visual error or is that case
Great explanation of the hybrid system
Excellent Henry
Is there more info on the Vision Pro stuff? Is there a separate demo that can be checked out?
i’d love to see a way they can get this motor mated to a manual. but this is pretty dope
for track duty, The ND MX5,with sway bars and tires is hard to beat. the Lambda equation on that car is smiles vs corners
Brilliant visuals and well done Porsche!
I have no issue with this new hybrid concept. The 911 has migrated to more of a GT cruiser since 991 and this keeps with that shift. For sporting and emotion they have the GT products.
I am pretty experienced at driving outside the city limits, so I can tell a GT cruiser would first of all need a powertrain layout that allows balanced handling. Rear-engined is not that layout. There must be a reason why 911s are so often caught in serious accidents, so I assume this reason is they lose balance easily and are disproportionally difficult to save once that balance is lost. Sure, people who don't drive will think like "but you 're not pushing when cruising", cars however lose balance much more easily than those people think. So I don't consider the 911 to be anyhow better than any other car in its price range. If I had that sort of money and wanted a GT cruiser, I 'd go for a front-engined RWD car with natural aspiration and manual transmission. As for the engine layout, I am more open to options: straight six, V12 or crossplane V8. You see, the flat-6 sounds a bit weak at low rpm, can't have as much bass as the options I suggest. Maybe this is just me, but I feel GT cruising needs an engine sound with good bass at low rpm. Hybridisation works against that, so it is a no-go for me.
Properly enjoyed this Harry !
0:43 "If this film electrifies your turbo..." Oh, putting spoilers in the commercial break are we? 😉
I was waiting for the "catchpole" review 😊
Hello, what road in Spain is this drive filmed on, please?

The sound does not have the artificial and ridiculous pop pop pop on downshifts. Beautiful car, love the Targa (no wind noise this time?)
Here for Henry, let’s have more of him😁
13:40 sounds more like a V8 than a flat 6. WTF?
Great video but what is that watch Henry?
Thanks Henry!
Henry and Hagerty … a match made in HEAVEN
"BABE!!!! HENRY DROVE THE NEW 911!!!!" 😍🤣 Perfect timing, just finished work lol.
I seriously admire Porsche for going this far with this level of complexity to retain an ICE at it's heart - the question is, how much further will they be prepared to go as more hurdles are thrown at them?
What do you mean manual ? What are the steering paddles for ?
