I've always loved this sketch. It makes me laugh so hard every time and it's such a brilliant and accurate satire of the main characters in TV crime series such as Silent Witness, Taggart and Inspector Morse. Catherine Tate is such a master at observational comedy.
The Moist Potato How so? The only characters that I can think of that are similar are Lauren Cooper and Vicky Pollard. But other than that, every character that Catherine plays is pretty unique and some of her characters are parodies. Like "The Enigmatic Cop" is meant to be a parody of those brillant TV detectives who have seen it all and talk in patronizing riddles. There's always that one type of character in CSI and NCSI.
this would be the best tv program ever. just a detective who says incredably random and stupid things but in the end it turns out she was right in a round about way all along
Me You like just imagine that the gun shes asking him to shoot her with is actually a fake and couldnt kill anyone because it doesnt work and the wound was made by something else "there was no bullet" and the dead guy in the first one is still working for the Anderson Brothers because it was part of his job to be a murder victim Bam two episodes
"I used to go embroidery classes when I was a child and I learned more about being a detective from those embroidery classes than I ever did at 'that place that I learned to be a detective'."
"I want you to shoot me with the murder weapon Whittaker. Take this and shoot me in the heart." It's impossible not to laugh at her deadpan delivery. I have to question that place where she learned to be a detective.
This was my favourite sketch from The Catherine Tate Show! I say "Whittaker" in the same tone as she uses (at the end when she is annoyed at him for not singing and when he doesn't shoot her) to my brother every time he annoys me (his name isn't Whittaker but we both just love this show) haha
My brother and I often lampoon Inspector Morse going "Lew-isss!" in that incredibly cantankerous, condescending tone of his. (We love the sweet young Sergeant Morse in the _Endeavour_ series, and can't work out how he ended up such an asshat as the elder Morse!) Now I'll have to go "Whitaker!" and my brother won't know what I'm talking about... hehe.
She's just perfect! I love how she doesn't try to make these obvious jokes but the story in its whole is extremely funny :) And she looks perfect with this kind of hair :)

Read the article to see how many of these things will come out in your own home if your parents have been in a good position for years or even months to get a good job at home or abroad in a few days and then they are going through the process and the way you feel about them and what they want you will do for them to recover and you can 77 from their parents to your child in a good place to be a great and good family person to be in your family home without knowing how you are feeling or feeling that way and I don't think I could be happier than you were when you had a child who was the best and worst person I have been 7 to have had to be with my mother in the same place and the rest is not just about me but it was just me that was so good for my children I had to go through a period where they had a very strong sense and they had to go through a very 😊
Her logic is hilarious. Especially the killer being a lady part over a man. I always questioned how the characters in crime shows really are so quick at figuring things out, but after watching this skit, I've figured it has nothing to to with logic and intelligence, but rather saying anything with conviction and confidence, that even the audience believes their conclusions xD
You people who are surprised that Catherine could sing obviously haven't seen her perform in very much. You should check her out in Much Ado About Nothing.
Has Catherine Tate ever done an album? She sings better than 95% of the pop acts these days! I'm just trying to imagine how that wonderful woman would 're-invent' pop-tunes.
this is a parody of almost every 2000s crime show, especially CSI: Miami (Horatio Caine) or even (the superb) show THE MENTALIST (Patrick Jane)... love these shows, love the parody! :D
It took Adam and Eve one minute to fall from grace in the Garden of Eden and yet growing out a layered bob can take forever. Ridiculous as she is, she's right there. :(
I can't believe I didn't know her. I guess we in n.amer. are isolated from the uk when esp. It's offensive humour. Most of her characters are. This one, is so genial cuz it satirizes this TV genre so smartly, need to watch over to truly get it.
"I really don't want to kill you mam." "How do you know you'll kill me?" "This is a 44 Magnum and I'm standing a foot away from you." Excellently Hilarious
She is unreal... I'm in tears
I'm crying myself watching this 😂 😂 😂
"It took one minute for Adam and Eve to fall from grace in the Garden of Eden, and yet, growing out a layered bob can take forever..."
@Avid Fan kind of like Catherine Tate's hairdo in this sketch
Omg, I wanted to post this quote too! LOLOL!
This is true
Phwot in the name of jumping Jehoshaphat is a layered bob.

Morse?
There's no one quite like Catherine Tate!
NotMostGirls, she just copied a load of her characters from little Britain.

this would be the best tv program ever. just a detective who says incredably random and stupid things but in the end it turns out she was right in a round about way all along
I would watch every single minute of that.
Me You like just imagine that the gun shes asking him to shoot her with is actually a fake and couldnt kill anyone because it doesnt work and the wound was made by something else "there was no bullet" and the dead guy in the first one is still working for the Anderson Brothers because it was part of his job to be a murder victim
Bam two episodes
***** no is it good??
al might Not as ridiculous as this but Columbo has a similar premise.
al might basically Sherlock tbh.
I always lose it when the piano part starts playing. Just the seriousness of the scene makes it even funnier 😂
"I used to go embroidery classes when I was a child and I learned more about being a detective from those embroidery classes than I ever did at 'that place that I learned to be a detective'."
"How many people do you know in London - without heads or feet?" Logical but insanely funny!
OMG she has such a beautiful singing voice. I about died (laughing) when she began singing that song by the Pretenders! That was GOLD.
Sad to read that your tone tone-deaf
"And yet, growing out a layered bob can take forever" LOL.
And then she breaks out into Brass in Pocket. Oh wow. I wouldn't be surprised if we were related.
"I want you to shoot me with the murder weapon Whittaker. Take this and shoot me in the heart." It's impossible not to laugh at her deadpan delivery. I have to question that place where she learned to be a detective.
George T. Couldn't stop laughing! :D
+George Probably from every day time detective story on TV xD.
This has to be the best persona that she takes on. She's so fabulous. I just love this character.
This woman is so brilliant. Gets me every time.
"You know technically it is possible to live without a head." 😂
One of my favourite sketches from the show - I just LOVE this one!
She is right, though. Someone without a head or fingerprints WOULD stick out a mile.
Tom Ripley Like a sore thumb!
I'm crying laughing watching this 😂 she's funny
"Is he? But is he? But is he really?"
"Yes mam, he's definitely dead" lol
Enigmatic Cop and Alec Hardy need to team up for a skit. They will drive each other mad and it will be gloriously hilarious!
OMG! This is like a spoof of Gillian Anderson years BEFORE "The Fall" was filmed!!!
+Clea Linden And Jane Tennison in "Prime Suspect", and Horatio Caine in "CSI: Miami". WAAAAAAAAAAAAW!
She definitely looks like an Agent Scully! The 90's clothes to hair!
Clea Linden LMAO RIGHT. even down to how posh she is now.
hahhaha

+Anna Jolie I'm laughing as much at the idea of you calling your brother Whitakker in that tone as I am at the video!
My brother and I often lampoon Inspector Morse going "Lew-isss!" in that incredibly cantankerous, condescending tone of his. (We love the sweet young Sergeant Morse in the _Endeavour_ series, and can't work out how he ended up such an asshat as the elder Morse!) This would actually make a fantastic clip in a surreal thriller. She would make a great actress in it.Love that music they play.
She's just perfect! I love how she doesn't try to make these obvious jokes but the story in its whole is extremely funny :) And she looks perfect with this kind of hair :)
This was one of my favourite characters, wish they had done a few more sketches with her!

"......Not really sure where you're going with this ma'am..." does it for me.
Catherine's character in this reminds me of some of my teachers 😂
And thus is the relationship between Sherlock and Watson.
Reminds me of some of the dialogue in "True Detective"
absolutely brilliant lol
Funny
Seeing this 7 years late....butstill magic.
Catherine stands the test of time like few others.👍
'I want you to shoot me with the murder weapon...' - love how it comes completely out of nowhere
Hilarious

holy shit, she can sing!
1:19 kills me EVERY TIME!!
You people who are surprised that Catherine could sing obviously haven't seen her perform in very much. You should check her out in Much Ado About Nothing.
growing out a layered Bob could take forever xD lol!
lauren cooper matured and became a cop
Has Catherine Tate ever done an album? She sings better than 95% of the pop acts these days! I'm just trying to imagine how that wonderful woman would 're-invent' pop-tunes.
her voice is actually pretty good!
She is so enigmatic! :D
omfg the smirk after she says there are more ladies in London. STELLA GIBSON is that you sis?
I used to date a chick like this. Nearly ended up in a sanitarium trying to understand what she was babbling about.
How did Whittaker not break character? Jaja I would of not been able to keep a straight face.
she can sing ! :) this is amazingg !
lol where on earth do they get an idea for this character from?? so funny
+Hero87 probably the woman I used to work for. She would say the most idiotic things like she knew what she was talking about. Left us going "huh?!"
this is a parody of almost every 2000s crime show, especially CSI: Miami (Horatio Caine) or even (the superb) show THE MENTALIST (Patrick Jane)... love these shows, love the parody! :D
She's supposed to be one of those "brilliant" TV detectives who've seen it all and talk in patronising riddles... this is so well observed
It's "Morse" (The elder, John Thaw version.) to a tee....even to the Mk2 Jag!
My favorite kind of humor!
BRB DYING
and the background music OH THE BACKGROUND MUSIC (Y)
I couldn't live a normal life as a chicken without a head? Don't be too sure.
That part gets me every time! XD
The best part is that cop shows really do this stuff, im dying here HAHAHAHA
10 years since, I've yet to see a BBC sketch to match this
What’s normal about having feathers and eating grain. This shit is hilarious. This needs to be a real show.
love the song.
This and the other one where she's a working mum detective are her best characters 😂😂😂
"I can do that!"..Ms. Tate👍💚
*flies away*
I think she just had a Doctor Who moment
This is the most hilarious character I've ever come across on any Comedy Sketch!
I sleep to this ❤️
She wouldn't be out of place on Twin Peaks haha
This should have been turned into a show.
In shows like The Fringe, her way of questioning would fit right in.
School memories!! me and my best friend acted this out all the time.. Oh my whittaker
I'd watch the shit out of this show fr
I have not stopped singing that.
Good detective work Whitaker
lmao she sounds more like a lawyer than a detective 😂😂
"Suppose for one moment, Whitaker, suppose none of this exists. You, me; we could all be figments of someone's imagination."
Ashes to Ashes much?
EXACTLY!!! :D
Life on Mars is better.
shes actually a bloody good singer.
Reminds me of old boss. Like Whittaker I was constantly confused🤣🤣
I've always loved this skit, because my last name is also Whitaker!!!! 😅 I'm not sure I could have done as well as this chap.
I wish this was a real TV show 😂
I love how this is exactly what actual cops do in those crime dramas :L Perfect satire, love her.
I'm not exactly sure where she is going with this. I guess I must continue learning then. :D
"I don't know where you're going with this ma'am." LOL ;P
This character remains me of Gill Grisom from CSI
A real object lesson in linear vs lateral thinking lol! “Ooh you look so sexy” “WHITAKER!!!!!!!”
I love her Cop voice :)
It took Adam and Eve one minute to fall from grace in the Garden of Eden and yet growing out a layered bob can take forever.
Ridiculous as she is, she's right there. :(
This is amazing!! I think Catherines going for a sort of Alex Drake accent (keeley Hawes) for Ashes to Ashes ;)
lol!! "this is a 44 magnum and im standing a foot away from you..?" XD
I know people like that 😅 very artistic. It’s difficult to have conversations with them.
I would watch this for hours if it was just her singing various songs to Whittaker and him looking confounded.
many women must appreciate the layered bob comment...
It took adam and eve 1 minute to fall from grace in the garden of eden.
And yet, growing out a layered bob can take forever.
LOL
oh whitiker whitiker, just when i thought you were making progress !
That is enigmatic. That...that is...that is textbook enigmatic.
THIS IS HILARIOUS.
Just when a thought you were making progress...
haha

she killed them for sure
Poor Whittiker
Thank you ;]
British Kristen wiig!
Amazing...
Anybody know the tune after she walks away? :L
Hahaha, superb
you don't have a clue where I'm going with this do you Whittaker...?
HAHA Catherine Tate is a fucking godess
"I really don't want to kill you mam."
"How do you know you'll kill me?"
"This is a 44 Magnum and I'm standing a foot away from you."
Excellently Hilarious
It's JUST like some of the stuff my mum watches!
LMAO...SHE IS HYSTERICAL
"Them Heavy People" (lol)
this woman really got it all figured out:D
