- In todays video we cut all the independent front suspension out of my 2001 Chevy S10 in preparation for the SAS. We are installing the High pinion dana 44 out of a 1976 F150 fully built, out of @DirtLifestyle TJ. We got this thing fully on its own weight so we can make some important decisions. We still have a ton of work to do but we are getting closer. I am of course using @barnes4wd parts for this build as always. See you next week!

He is a neighbor of mine and really neat to see all of his projects as the come in. I haven't had the opportunity to meet him yet but it's fun to see his projects roll in.
Great work.
I didn’t realise so much went into the positioning of the axle and associated links ! Well done with all the calculations and angle setting. 👍🏽😎
Thanks, yea…link suspension is more complicated than leaf springs, but when set up correctly it is far superior to leafs.
Iam running 5.5 rock kralwer triple rate jk springs on my s10 , they seam to hold the weight of the s10 really well , iam also using adjustable buckets. Makes fine tuning much easier
Good to know, thanks 👍🏻
I watch you before I watch Nate! Keep up the great work, thanks for sharing!
Oh and stay healthy my man, these videos aren't as important as your health! We'll understand if your content is delayed!!!
Thanks I appreciate it. It isn’t necessarily the videos. I am trying to get this done for EJS which is 3 weeks away
This gives me an idea of what I’m up against if I ever do a sas on my 03 xterra
I'm doing a '11 Frontier now. Cutting the old stuff out was definitely the worst part.
You are absolutely hammering this build out. Great job!
Thanks 👊🏻
Watching this video series for inspiration and motivation. Wanting to do something very similar with a Nissan Frontier. Great work! Stay healthy!
Nice, definitely build a frontier, they are very cool.
i would lower the spring mount to closely duplicate the tj spring mount to axel set up. that #1 wont cost any extra, #2 not sure how the multi rate 6" spring would work with your intended ride height . 6"lift i think would be engineered to have a much higher ride height before bump. thanks for the great info and explanation on front geometry.
This build is so cool can't wait to see it finished
Thanks 🤟🏻
This is a build I’ve wanted to do for a while. Looking good!
Thanks 👍🏻
Damn.... I want to do this, but I don't have the experience. I need to just start it and follow some of your direction. Great job ! Fun to watch
Thanks, it’s a ton of work… but it was worth it👊🏻
I know you're feeling about having a small, crowded shop/garage.... while doing the SAS on my suburban I often times thought dang I need a bigger shop almost as much as I thought man a lift would make this so much easier.
I have watched you and Nate both build three and four link setups and still do not get it at all 😂😂😂
Great looking build seems well thought out! It should be very capable for what you want to do!!!
Thanks 👊🏻
You make this easy! Great explanation too!!
Thanks 👊🏻
looking good brother thanks for sharing your health is more important take care brother
Thanks 👊🏻
cut both coil buckets out and go to a cheaper 14" coilover so youre not pulling hair over spring rates. ride height, and have good and easy shock tuning. so much more simple of a setup
killin it! Mega Rad Rig, can't wait to see the next vid!
Thanks 👊🏻
Great job learned a ton from your content
Thanks 👊🏻
Thank you for your video Kelly 😎👍
👍🏻
6-6.5 springs then just space them up from axle build the box up or Spacer ... Or get adjustable bump stops to space it up
Looking good Kelly!
Thanks👊🏻
Taller springs all the way!
Yup, I will try that first, if they are too soft I can do zj springs which are slightly stiffer.
Lookin good. Hope you get to feeling better.
Thanks 👍🏻
If you cut 3" out of the towers and go for the larger springs you will be able to have more down travel. Build some sort of spring retainer for the axle and frame so it doesn't come loose at full droop
👍🏻 the reason I like the metal cloak springs is even at full droop they never come loose, because of the upper soft spring rate.
5:16 A point of contention.... You don't "have" to use a Panhard bar. (its not a track bar.....) You could use one of the variations on a "watts link". And given your oil pan layout, engine mount set up, along with your steering geometry, you might want to consider a horizontal watts link.
You should come do the same thing to my 88 S10 Blazer when you're done 😅
I did an ABS delete when I SAS’d my 4 runner.
Same master cylinder I assume? With the abs out I now have room for the arb compressor and wiring stuff so it worked out. Just more work making brake lines.
@@MuddyBeards4X4, my year (2000), the abs pump was separate from the master cylinder (later years, it one unit). Yes, I’m using the stock master cylinder and it works great. The abs on it was not a good system. It rarely kicked in on road and kicked in offroad way too much. I also needed the space under the hood. I wanted it gone anyway.
Not sure if you're taking this into consideration but a longer spring of the same spring rate might not be the answer. With the axle at full bump, will the block height of a longer spring fit between the upper and lower spring mounts? I think this truck will be heavier than a TJ so a stiffer spring with the correct block height might be what you need instead.
Yes, I think you might be correct. The s10 weights about 800lbs more than the tj, but the engines weights about the same, 4.0 being a little heavier. So I will try this and if it’s too soft, I might change to a zj spring which have a 24lb heavier spring rate than the tj.
Consider ZJ front coils.
They are identical dimensions to TJ coil's, but they have a higher spring rate for the heavier V8 chassis.
Good to know, I don’t really want a higher spring rate necessarily, but definitely an option to look into
Longer springs are better. Give you longer travel
If you re-install ABS and get to the bleeding stage and you can't get it to bleed that is normal sometimes when changing an ABS unit sometimes you need a special machine to push fluid through or theres a special procedure. I can't remember specifically for your vehicle but I've had troubles and have helped plenty of people that have had troubles bleeding a new ABS unit. I'd suggest deleting ABS then you don't have to mess with sensors and tone rings and stuff at the wheels with your new stuff. Ive deleted ABS on a few vehicles with not much trouble especially older vehicles. But, and this is a big but lol, if the ABS ties into other systems that require wheel speed and whatnot or theres features you want to keep or the computer needs then it can get troublesome and in that case I'd keep it and try to simplify and relocate things.
The abs is out, no wheel speed sensors, so it would never work anyways. You need the gm or aftermarket scan tool to bleed the abs module. I worked as a tech for GM and replaced and bled plenty of them, they do suck.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 awesome you shouldn't have too much trouble making new lines and getting it all fixed up. ABS takes up a lot of real-estate sometimes plus I've never liked ABS on a offroad oriented vehicle.
I'm guessing your stock master cylinder is probably just fine for the size of calipers on the new axles so you probably won't have much trouble with anything unless you have to mess with the proportioning valve.
Have you ever thought about doing hydroboost? It's probably unnecessary with your setup but I really like hydroboost and there's probably some off the shelf parts you could use from the vans.
I would say put some ACOS Coil spacers in there and run the springs you have, then you have bump stops aswell
I had recently swapped D35 for a D44 w/iron rock truss in the rear of my 04wj, the axle seems to be slamming into the transmission on the slip yoke side,,for the time being to get thought winter does anyone know the difference of adjustable length on the control arms????
Nice build so far, sir. Question for you. What TJ upper sprimg bucket did you use?
Barnes4wd, it’s not a Tj bucket just a universal one.
I’d switch to a JK front coil.
Why didn’t you use a Johnny joint to improve the ride quality and not have the squeak noise?
What kind do you get to do an S10 I have a ZR2 2002
Why don’t you get a set of ZJ 7 inch front springs? Same size as TJ coils and should be about what you want ride height wise.
Yea, if the Tj springs are too soft I will try zj springs, they are 24lb heavier spring rate than the Tj ones.
I think I would go longer springs. 6 inches even. In my mind that should give more coil to help it not come unseated when you flex and run longer shocks
Yup, I am going to try 6” coils and lowering the tower 1.5” and see where I am at. If they end up too soft I can switch to zj springs which have a slightly higher spring rate.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 sounds like a good plan to me! I have a 80 series I recent did a reverse 4 link and 3 link on. I didn’t go coilovers like you eventually I will but it’s amazing what a difference it made already man.
Wow man, you making get progress and inspiring me to SAS my Liberty. I might have missed it but what are you doing for shock mounts for the front?
Thanks, I think the Liberty is cool platform. I have a few different idea on shock mounts in the front, I haven’t decided 100% yet. I am finishing up the rear this weekend so I will deal with that after.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Nice. Looking forward to the next one!
Longer coils will flex better that shorter ones.
I'm doing a d44hp in my 02 tahoe. What did you end up going for spindles and hubs. Are you running ford knuckles and hubs and spindles. ? Or are you running chevy 6 lug wheel adapters
It’s all stock ford stuff with warn locking hubs. Mine is out of a 76 f150.
Getting closer! Do you think the weight of that crew cab may be a bit much for the TJ springs?
Thanks, good point, maybe. I ordered 6” springs. If I don’t like those or they are too soft I will try v8 zj springs maybe…
If you have someone close by with the same lift spring on TJ ,maybe measure theirs and yours to compare the height of them and see what the difference is.That would give a good idea if they are overloaded.
I have some 6” metal cloak dual rate coils that I’m getting rid of. Shoot me a message if you want them. I purchased them about 4-6 months ago
Also just remembered they are for the rear of a tj. So kinda fat
What truck did you get the front differential from boss ?
Tha axle is originally out of a 1976 f150.
Was this a 4x4 to start with? I am just trying to figure out a few things for my gmc Sonoma
Yes, 4x4.
What do you recommend for caster angle?
Whatever the manufacturer recommends, and if you are running a bigger tire you can always go a little higher to help drivability.
Do you have a take out the cross member
Yes, I explain it and show it being cut out in the first minute of the video.
What front coils are you running?
I typed that in the middle of the video. And after I hit send you said what we're running too funny. Got. If you see this thanks you so much.
I have 7.5 inch rubicon express springs you can have.
Where are you located?
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Humboldt County California
I appreciate the offer, I am a little too far away, to make it convenient, lol.
Is there two different people on this channel
You can't cut into the rear part of the fender without cutting into the cab.
If you feel like dog crap don't be afraid to post a video saying I feel like crap you will be a video delayed. We take sick days people should understand you do too.
Thanks, it isn’t necessarily about the video, I am trying to get it done in 3 weeks for Easter Jeep Safari, so I can’t take sick days unless I am dying…
Your videos could be better, You talk to much in ALL your videos I wish you wouldn't talk so much would make the better!!!!!
