real nice thanks - i grew up on the Grand and the Speed rivers - man they were nothin but sewage runs in the 60's - nice to see they have been cleaned up - thanks agin
Oh dude same! The nith, fuckn mudhole for years and now we got steel running pretty dang far up that river. Kudos to the grandriver conservation authority, we can thank them for such a turn around in the watershed
Another great video! If you ever get a chance to fish in Tennessee, the Clinch is one of the best trout rivers in the country. It held the world record brown for years.
Fished the Grand for the first time this Thanksgiving weekend for steelhead. Water levels are very low. Beautiful river. I hope to return soon and fish for browns, too! Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the video. That used to be my favorite section of the Grand to fish. Brought back some fond memories although it must have been a while because I don't remember the stairs.
Those ferns are fiddle heads beginning April. The local creeks in my neck of the woods of southern Ontario have rainbows and a few browns. But I’m always picking fiddle heads when they sprout. ✌️🇨🇦
I recognize the area but I have never caught a trout there, only the odd smallmouth on a spinner. I saw an osprey smoke a decent brown though. I guess I need to take up fly fishing lol. Great job on the gentle releases!
Great video. I used to fish the Grand a lot when I was at University in Guelph. I suspect your problem was that you are casting a long way across current so you would have had a ton of drag which puts the fish off. With the smaller fly the stockies probably though it was a caddis. Try casting straight up stream to get drag free float. You will likely have much better results. Tight lines!
another great video and beautiful wildlife! manged to cast in the wind good stuff. i try to incorporate as much of my surroundings and wildlife in my videos as possible:) tight lines.
@Ninos Zaya the brown trout are not native and originally came from Germany. Way back they stocked it with rainbows and browns but the browns did better with the hot summers/weather. I think the same goes with the Salmon found in Ontario, I believe they originally came from British Columbia and were never native to the Great Lakes and tributaries.
@@CarlOutside thanks man, i only fish grand once a year and always go to the andersson parking lot (that's all i know) and that area of the Grand is great but would like to try other areas too...just don't know which area you parked in the first part of the video...not familiar to me....
Hahaha just watched your brother's vid where he was grousing about the cold. I see who lives the charmed life in the family, poor Doug. I know filmed earlier and good vid.
Good watch. And, somewhat unexpectedly, the wind made it feel more enjoyable and down to earth. But I have a question: is it normal to leave such a large bit of slack line when tying on flies (9:03)? I myself do not fly fish, but find things like that quite intriguing. Tight lines!
No, its not normal, I did notice that when editing, I must have been in a hurry to get it in the water and forgot to trim the tag end. It can actually be bad to leave it as it could cause the fly to sit funny on the surface....Thanks
Thanks for the videos. I turned 71 this year and my newest challenge is fly fishing. Having fun catching pan fish and smallies about 3hrs NE from Fergus/Elora (noticed you location info. in replies). Plan to try for my first trout(s) in the Grand this week. Do I need a net if I'm lucky to catch one of them LOL?
Great video on the Grand. New subscriber from Ontario, noticed you came over to my channel a few weeks ago, came back to say Hi and check your channel out as well. Cheers Adrian
Mid summer is always tough as the hatches are tiny bugs and the fish get smart, I really like to fish it in May and June.....big bugs, and less pressure
The line is thick for casting. In fly fishing you are casting the line not a heavier lure or bait, the fly and tippet are basically weightless so the thicker fly line is the weight to deliver the fly and leader
Those browns look more green then I remember seeing them. Is that from being farm fish? Cant wait to get out on the water with dad (dan is my dad for those who dont know) on the kayaks! This year is the year for getting out more. You got a kayak carl?
hey bro lovely camera work love the slow mo sections! sub from Ireland! hoping you'll check out my fishing channel would really appreciate your feedback and return support ta!
"3:40" "foam is home" awesome wade shot!
Thank-you! Looking forward to getting back out there in a couple months
real nice thanks - i grew up on the Grand and the Speed rivers - man they were nothin but sewage runs in the 60's - nice to see they have been cleaned up - thanks agin
Yup water is nice now, at least in the Fergus, Elora area

Drove through there last spring, ...beautiful country for sure
Beautiful spot to spend time on a cold day. 👍 Thanks.
Thanks, it was a fun afternoon
Brings back the memories, thanks!
Looks like a beauty day on the water!! Impressive control in such high winds!
There was a lot of ugly casts that day too : )
Fished the Grand for the first time this Thanksgiving weekend for steelhead. Water levels are very low. Beautiful river. I hope to return soon and fish for browns, too! Thanks for the vid!
Good luck! I have only fished the upper sections and really enjoy that river
@@CarlOutside It was really low. I bet the rain this week helped somewhat.
Hey, where's the snow!?😁 beautiful day on the water, thanks for sharing 👍
That was from back in June, I have a few summer trips I didn't get edited yet
Any fish on the fly is a good fish. Nice video👍👍👍
Yup, I am still pretty much a rookie so I am happy with all of them
Beautiful river and beautiful trout !!!
It sure is, cant wait to get back this summer
I hear ya !!!
Thanks for the video. That used to be my favorite section of the Grand to fish. Brought back some fond memories although it must have been a while because I don't remember the stairs.
Glad you enjoyed it. I didnt make it there this past year so i hope to get there later in the spring. I think the stairs are fairly new

Thanks, the wind sure makes casting tough, but its still a day on the water
Great video,Carl!!
Thank-you
So all that Trout in the Grand is stocked and not wild ?
Yes, all the Brown Trout are stocked
@Ninos Zaya the brown trout are not native and originally came from Germany. Way back they stocked it with rainbows and browns but the browns did better with the hot summers/weather. I think the same goes with the Salmon found in Ontario, I believe they originally came from British Columbia and were never native to the Great Lakes and tributaries.
Where was this man I fish the grand river a lot but I don’t know where the stream parts of the river like your fishing are
We were fishing near Fergus, ON
Awesome vid - I caught my first brown trout today. Such beautiful fish! On the Grand too.
Nice, ...congrats,...its a great place to catch'em
Where do you usually park? I park close to the farm where there's an apple tree...
I fish different areas of the river but always use the posted parking areas along the river and once at the water I will hike up or downstream
@@CarlOutside thanks man, i only fish grand once a year and always go to the andersson parking lot (that's all i know) and that area of the Grand is great but would like to try other areas too...just don't know which area you parked in the first part of the video...not familiar to me....
@@smackinbaits6693 this area was just north of Elora there is a couple parking areas along there on the west side of the river
Try fishing under a bridge sometime during a storm I hear the fish don’t like to get wet!
Hahaha just watched your brother's vid where he was grousing about the cold. I see who lives the charmed life in the family, poor Doug. I know filmed earlier and good vid.
Wishing for those days now,...ice fishing soon I hope. I have a few more from summer that I just didn't get edited yet

which bridge are you fishing under if you dont mind me asking?
We were near Fergus
Where abouts is this section??

I do like a net just helps get them unhooked and back quicker, ... they can be pretty feisty....Good Luck I hope you get some
Where is that spot?
I fish that exact spot all the time lol I'm a local
Where is it? I’d love to try it
Great video on the Grand. New subscriber from Ontario, noticed you came over to my channel a few weeks ago, came back to say Hi and check your channel out as well.

Thanks for checking out the channel, appreciate it. I will continue to view yours as well
How do you cast when it's windy?
Its hard kinda have to time it between gusts
when do you think is a good time to fish The Grand River?
We were out today, didnt catch anything! We tried at the Dam aswell as Pilkington Overlook
Mid summer is always tough as the hatches are tiny bugs and the fish get smart, I really like to fish it in May and June.....big bugs, and less pressure
You definitely look like a pro swinging that rod. Why is fly fishing line so thick compared to regular fishing line?
The line is thick for casting. In fly fishing you are casting the line not a heavier lure or bait, the fly and tippet are basically weightless so the thicker fly line is the weight to deliver the fly and leader
What part of the grand river where is it located
This is near Fergus
What state you in? Look so much like where I fish in Arkansas.
I am in Ontario, Canada
@@CarlOutside Ok. I'm subscribed to a lot of Canadian channels...
Where about on the grand was this? Looks beautiful!
I was between Elora and Fergus
@@CarlOutside Thanks!
So many rules in that area. Barbless hooks. No live bait lures only and catch and release.
Yes, but it keeps the fishing good

Might have been the color on camera but they were pretty traditional Yellow/Brown color. No kayak but definitely the year to start getting out more
What’s the location??
I was near Fergus
