So he unleashed Sikma in games a decade before Dirk. Bill Laimbeer also started shooting threes around that time. Then a bunch of bigs started shooting threes regularly, like Sam Perkins.

Don Nelson envisioned this NBA long before the players were ready. He tried to go small with shooters, putting three point shooting small forward Rod Higgins at power forward and green-lighting anyone to take threes. He tried to turn Manute Bol into proto-Wemby, having him shoot threes and dribble (ouch). He brought Sarunas to the league with his weird Eurostep (was that a travel?). Then he drafted Owens and Webber to be his 4 and 5 of the future, but Webber hated going up against guys like Shaq and Ewing on a nightly basis. He tried to turn Anthony Mason into a point power forward, and he succeeded ,as he was a preview of what Draymond became. Then came Dirk, who many saw his position as a tall small forward. Nelson wanted to play him at center and have him shoot threes. Dirk did shoot threes, but the league still had Shaq, then Yao and Dwight, so Dirk played the 4 instead of the 5. Even with the Bucks in the 80's, he favored positionless ball. Through all that time, and across four different teams, Nelson wanted this playstyle revolution that we have now.

He's not a great person at all but I separate that with what he was as a basketball player and he was absolutely truly worthy of being called the Goat and the best part is he never even claimed he was. i got into the NBA around 08-09 so i got to witness a time when back to the basket bigs were still a thing, and my dad would always talk about Moses Malone, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem, etc. When the traditional big man started to fade away around 2014 it honestly made me sad to see, watching a big man work in the post can be a thing of art. I’m glad to see that the last few years has been a big man renaissance, feels good to see them thriving again.
What’s your story in the NBA?
The center position started dying long before you started watching. When Jamal Magloire was selected to the All-Star team in '04, everyone knew something was wrong with the center position. All the great scoring centers were disappearing, with Shaq as the last man standing. Power forwards had taken on the mantle of the "big man" by that point, as they still used post scoring, but they were good face-up players as well (Dirk, KG, Duncan). The center position became mostly defense-only. Much of this transition away from post offense was caused by rule changes. On defense, big and slow-footed shot blockers were still very useful, since the league's skills hadn't caught up to the new rules yet. But Coach D'Antoni and the Suns showed that quick and athletic face-up power forwards (Amare) could be moved to center, and it would open up space for slashing, passing, and dunks. The Lakers were the last championship team to rely heavily on post offense from bigs, with a traditional center (Bynum) and a traditional face-up power forward who could also post-up (Gasol).
2014 wasn't when the decline started, but rather when it all but ended, as the Warriors introduced the dreaded "death lineup", with no real center at all. Teams still rolled out their traditional centers for a few minutes to start games or against big lineups here and there (Bogut), but the Warriors dynasty was really the nail in the coffin. That was when guys like Brook Lopez and Marc Gasol started shooting threes to keep themselves relevant. The young guys in college and overseas also saw the direction of things, so 7-footers started practicing more skills, and the art of post offense was partially lost from the league altogether. But a few of these younger guys patterned their games off these adapted styles that Gasol and Lopez employed, and they took it to another level. Now the center position is back, even posting up some, but post-ups are still a much weaker version of what once was.
It's so funny that MJ dominated the league of Bigs like nobody has done before. And 25 years later with all the new rules, we still have to see if anyone can approach the level of dominance that the ghost in Chicago who wore number 23 had
He didn't dominate against the bigs of the 80's.... he couldn't beat the lakers or the celtics in the playoffs.
Mj could score on bigs all the time. Phil jackson said mj and oscar are the 2 greatest guard post scorers he ever seen. But this guy is wrong, mj wasnt the 1st to show you can win without a dominant big man, it was the pistons in the late 80s.

Glad someone FINALLY touched on the fact that the NBA changed the rules because they were trying to create the next Jordan.
A lot of youngsters don't realize this. The NBA tried to make the game easier for smaller players to score, like Jordan did under the
original rules. They did this just so they could say: " Look! 'player X' is just as good, if not better than MJ was! " It didn't work, as MJ
remains the gold standard to this day. However, a lot of great players flourished under the new rules of the NBA, so I can't be mad at it.
the big difference with the goat center: They made the rules harder for Wilt and ever since there hasn't been a SINGLE rule change that benefited the big man so now we just learn the little man skills too and still beat them, because they can't take away size 🖕
I think it was more about TV numbers. Jordan was electric but by the late 90s, the NBA was not doing well in ratings in non- MJ/Shaq games.
The NBA actually tried to bring back defense heavily. I think the idea was to go back to 80s style.
This video leaves out a lot of facts:
Major change to physicality was in 1991 with foul rule changes like implementing Flagrants and calling more fouls on contact. (Jordan shot A LOT of Free throws lol)
First hand check change was in 1995 and was made to encourage more perimeter scoring. Jordans numbers reflect this
2002 rule changes was NBA going all in on defense and trying to recreate old era defensive battles. It backfired and ratings tanked because nobody wanted to watch games that were 70-74 final scores and sub 40% shooting
After THAT era of terrible ratings and "boring" champs like Spurs and Pistons, the league forced the changes to make game flashier.
Tbh we might not have an NBA if they kept on same track from 2002-2005, it wasn't fun to watch 95% of the time.
The first hand check change came in 1995, when Jordan was retired. Which proves my point. All these changes to make the game easier for perimeter players, came when Mike was away from the game. Including the time they brought forward the three point line. This was in the 1994/95 season if I'm not mistaken. This was to encourage more perimeter scoring, and it worked. @@Michael-vn2jj

I think thats not he plan for a reason, allow them to use their skills over mass. You see the next OKC game? Chets size is so good without mass.
The problem with putting more weight is their legs and knees would have trouble supporting it which would result in more injuries in the long-term.

I'd go back slightly and say it began with Magic taking over as center in the NBA Finals and his rivalry with Bird dominating the 80's, then Jordan's 90's Dynasty. The 3 of them dominating the league in popularity and championship winning for 2 consecutive decades reshaped the way teams played and determined who the next generation would model their game after.
It did indeed start in the 80s but conventional wisdom was still "Centers and big men rule the game". Kareem in his old age was still very effective. Parish and Mikhail was terrifying, Moses Malone was a rebounding machine and even helped Hakeem on his game before his start in the NBA and his very brief stint with Ralph showing much potential before the latter got riddled with injuries. Portland literally drafted Bowie over Jordan because of it which to this day they still regret.
Even the quotes in TLD when MJ was a rookie about, “well he’s only 6’6”, so how much difference can he really make” and “is he big enough to carry a team”.
Basketball is still a big a man’s game, but if you have the skill you don’t need to be quite as big anymore.

I think the European\International players, especially big men have always been unicorns/skilled. You can look at all the players, the thing is back then they were called “soft” because they weren’t dunking aggressively but instead outside shooting. It was only when the big men era died after Dwight/Bynum then the league went to this era of bigs.

One team i found interesting using the skilled big men were the cavs from 2 seasons ago they ran a lineup with Lauri, Mobley, and Allen and almost made the playoffs to before garland got hurt but that lineup i think could be a interesting blueprint for the future of the league

This is excellent. Changing the game arbitrarily to make easier for 2 guards to look like Jordan didn’t work. Jordan evolved when centers were allowed to be centers. You can’t fake it. When I see how help defense can’t arrive on time anymore because of clownish rules, I’m just not as impressed with wide open dunks. Jordan did his in legit crowds . And the new rules caused more injuries, not less, because playing defense is almost impossible now.
It’s very interesting and difficult to follow that you spent so much time dissecting a move from centers and big men directly to Steph Curry’s impact on the league without saying Lebron James’ name a single time 😯
Great video, but you mention the game evolves. What's to say it doesn't come in the form of guards within the next 5 years. We're already seeing it with Luka. I do agree that Big men are making a comeback after decades of irrelevancy besides some outliers. We still have a lot of talented young guards to where I can still see them taking over the league in maybe a decade.
If the Bigs are shooting like guards and handling the ball, then it will take a Michael Jordan tier like guard to wrestle back the
crown from the big man. Just like it did the first time.
A properly designed Trap, will force tempo & offenses need to control tempo. Every court has the EXACT same dimensions. It’s about positioning. No NBA team is ready for this an entire game NO PASS UNCHALLENGED 💪🏾
as a 6'10 41yo traditional European center, I've added the 3 to my game and regularly play guard on offense. I post up the smaller youngsters that haven't experienced a true center in a decade and punish the bigger ones from around the paint or outside the 3. It doesn't matter that I can't run that fast anymore, that's what my guards and forwards are for: I have 3 to 4 options for long outlet passes and a "true" guard with better handles can come in case I don't see a clear line.
To say I've briefly retired 2 seasons ago, it's just too easy nowadays to score on any type of player but a younger unicorn 😎

Thank you for speaking the truth. The rules change created superstars on every team since it’s so much easier to score but they forgot about defense and went 3 crazy. Now big men return. The cycle will shift back in the future as they keep tweaking the rules etc.
I would love to see hand-checking and physical defense return though. Loved to see a player pushed to the limit on both ends of court. This modern b-ball resembles “exhibition” b-ball since they all load manage on defense. Boring. They stand around on defense and only give max effort on offense. B-ball is supposed to be full court.

natural evolution of the game, imo. 7-footers are statistical abnormalities; they only make up a tiny percentage of the population. MJ showed the world that height didn't mean anything when you have combined skill, athleticism competitive fire, and determination to win -- market those properly to a new generation of ballers, and a prototype of NBA ballers emerged, dominated, and became the trend. Curry took that trend and steered it in a different trajectory with his even smaller size and shooting.
I honestly don't know why some people find it perplexing. I mean, USA basketball even acknowledged that international ballers had size AND skill. They also had stronger fundamentals, especially in regards to team play. This is why more and more international players are not afraid to take on the challenge of playing in the NBA. The Europeans took on that challenge; it won't be long before the Asian and African countries do it too!

What I’m wondering is what will be next for small guys under 6’5”? If you aren’t shooting like Curry, are you really able to do anything notable? How will they possibly compete with this new wave of big men?
I mean, u gotta look at jamal murray or austin reaves. U mainly need to not be a negative on defense and have playmaking to add versatility to ur game whilst not being a 3pt brick factory. Dillon brooks aint small but he’s a good defender + an acceptable 3pt catch and shoot player. If u mean what’s gonna happen with shot chucking volume scorers who dont really defend or assist or do anything other than score, we’ve already seen whats happening with those type of players with Cam Thomas on the nets. Bro is a pure fucking bucket and yet he doesnt get 40 minutes a game when he can clearly be a 23+ ppg scorer on decent efficiency.

You failed to mention that illegal defense was different back then. Zone was illegal so as late double team. So Jordan has the easiest time going iso. Don't spin the narrative into Jordan's era having the toughest time to score. It actually was Kobe's era and the main reason why the league's average at the time was so low.

You could change it 'back' tomorrow if you wanted to, but the league realizes it makes more money if every game is played like an all-star game from back in the day. No 'D' and chuck up the shots.
